[Q] Noob to rooting and Kernal question - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi,
I have just rooted my phone using Zedomax's kernal. I ended up going through each version and doing it that way since I was not sure if you needed each one to make everything work. Anyway, is this how it should be done? If not, how would I go about changing it to make everything the most efficient?

I dont really understand the question... but its kernel..

I'm pretty sure you can just flash the latest kernel that Zedomax has. You are just flashing the kernel over on top of each other if I'm reading your post right, which is unnecessary.

Really Confused about Flashing Roms?

Hello guys, im still kind of a noob at flashing roms and stuff. I was interested into the SyndicateROM Frozen and was on EC05 so rooted then flashed. But I want to try out new roms. My question is since Im on EC05, can i only flash Roms that are for EC05? Like some Roms like VIPERrom say EB13, could I just download the zip and flash? Would I be fine? Also like CyanogenMod7 could I install this or do I have to be on Build number it says?
Could someone please reply back and clarify this for me. Really confused!
Thanks!
Someone please help?
You can only flash ROMs for EC05, and you can flash cm7 from any build #, so yes, you can flash that. Just be warned you may want to make a nandroid backup in clockworkmod to go to your previous ROM since cm7 is not yet completed enough for a daily driver, unless you're okay without a camera, SD card that doesn't scan, and no 4G. Check out some of the how-to videos stickied in the General section. Hope this helps!

Newb Question

I want to root my phone to get WiFi tether.
I am confused. What is the best way to root the phone? I see a Zedomax Vid on youtube which links to a "version 1" file.
Can anyone post a link for the best way to root right now?
If I root the phone, is that the same as installing a custom ROM?
I want a custom rom eventually once they have been worked out a bit longer.
Right now, I just want to be rooted for wifi tether.
Thanks in advance and sorry for such basic questions, but I am getting a bit confused I as read through the forums.
My main concern with rooting the ET4g is the flash counter that I have read about here. I had my evo4g rooted so I'm not new to this but I am for the ET4g...Do these pre-rooted kernals replace the stock kernal? Will there eventually be a method to keep the stock kernal and root the phone? Will there be a way to bypass the flash counter built into the rooting process/a custom ROM? I want to have those questions answered before I root my phone b/c I don't want something to go wrong and then I can't get it replaced through sprint. The only reason I would want root is for wifi tethering...custom roms maybe but at this point I see no reason aside from random bugs that I would need a custom rom. Anyways sorry to jack this thread. I figured it was a similar question.
Edit: And maybe this thread should be moved into the questions section

You can flash a rooted kernel, then flash the stock to get back to the stock kernel and still be rooted. Both kernels are available in the developers section of this site. As far as the flash count goes - I'm not sure if there is a way to reset the counter.

Use Zedomax's method - I only say this because he includes the flash utility (ODIN) and a rooted .tar as well as a helpful step by step video.
You do NOT need to install a custom ROM to root - you can use odin to flash just the kernel.

Thanks for the reply. Should i use the method as on youtube with "version 1" link or is there an updated version?

Go HERE and use that version.. it is just the rooted stock kernel with a few tweaks. There are also links in that thread for ODIN (the flash utility) and Samsung Kies (you'll need to install this to obtain the proper drivers for your device) as well as a step by step method.

Best method for Root/Stock Kernel/Latest CWM Currently?

So I've changed my stance on root and I've decided to go for it soon. I'm sorry if this question is redundant but there's a few root methods and even more kernels in the developer's forum now, and this will be my first ever foray into android rooting and flashing so I want the noob friendliest method possible.
My goal as indicated in the title is to end up with root, a clean stock kernel and the latest CWM. So what path would you guys suggest I take based on what the great devs have put together thus far? By the way, I have a good handle on Odin I think so I don't need flashing instructions, just the best path to take to the above based on the kernels available.
Thanks in advance.
I have found that stock kernels work best for me. I would suggest you try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296348 or this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305099. I am currently using the second one.

Thanks but the LOSt kernel isn't stock is it? Assuming it's not, I've decided to pass on it for now and go straight stock. So since chris41g's kernel doesn't root, would it be best to get root by flashing Zedomax's kernel first, then chris' or flash Superuser via CWM after flashing chris' kernel? I'm trying to find the method with the least potential for problems since this is my first go at it.
Thanks again.
I would flash the stock with cwm and then flash the superuser, zip in cwm.

Well I had a change of plans and decided to go straight to chris41g's LoStKernel. Gonna run that for awhile and see if I can pull of my first LOS. If not, cool beans. If I do, I can always just flash a stock kernel via CWM now that I'm rooted.
Thanks for the advice guys!

[Q] What Custom ROMs can I use without new kernal?

Hi all,
I'm planning to start installing custom ROM's and haven't yet installed CWM. I don't plan on changing the kernal, as I hear issues about battery drain etc, and I just wanted to know which Custom ROM's I can use without flashing anything extra, as in just going on CWM, and installing a .zip?
Thanks in advance!
Anyone? :/
Under the heading stock based ROMs from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294129
Its not a complete list and you should still always read to make sure you don't need to flash a kernel along with it. If you flash a ROM that requires a custom kernel on locked bootloader you will brick your phone, so read carefully.

Flashed roms but nothing else.

Forgive my noobishness but I really dont know where to begin here. Ive had my note 2 since November and this is my first android device. Anyhow, I flashed several roms these last few months and I prefer the ATT Cleanrom versions the best. Today I will be flashing ATT Cleanrom SE 3.0 and after reading peoples comments ive come to realize that im still running stock baseband or pretty close to it. I always assumed the when I did I ROM upgrade that all necessary software came with it.
Anyhow, my current baseband is I317UCALK7 and I think UCAM3 just came out. What I basically need to know is how to flash this new radio and is there anything else that I should flash inorder to stay up to date?
Other than that, one other quick question, what is a firmware? In the section where the most current basebands are listed the firmware section is right below it and there is a firmware with the same name as the baseband, that I listed above I317UCALK7. I assume its a bone stock setup that is flashed with Odin. So of I need to go back to a stock setup I would need to 1. Flash a stock recovery, 2. Then do a Triangle Away 3. THEN do an Odin flash.
My apologies for the questions, there are still alot of things I dont know about the world of root and Im jist doing a bit on recon before trying something new. Thanks!

Just go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2274854
Just download the modem zip boot into recovery and flash it and reboot. Make sure you wipe cache and dalvik.
Im not sure if you are using CWM or TWRP but both should work the same.
