Hi all,
very strange this. There are four users of XDA-devices in my office (all on T-Mobile), myself (XDA2s), an XDA2, and two Imates (the XDA2 ones). Now, at random times throughout the day we will all recieve a text message with no sender number, but the text of the message is '13779538669'. I have never received this message on my other mobile phone (SE K700i, Voda), and I don't receive it on my Nokia when I use my T-Mobile SIM card in there!
I also only receive this message when I'm in this particular area (WA15, Hale, Cheshire), although a colleague says he gets it when he goes near Manchester Airport (5 miles from here).
What the hell? I know, I wouldn't believe it either unless I'd seen it happening but I promise you, it does happen!
In case you don't believe me :

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Dan
Its possible to send no-number SMS messages from services like http://theSMSzone.com
Maybe one of your friends is playing a prank on you?

Thanks for the reply. It seems unlikely that this is a prank, as four different people get the message and only when we are in the office, or near to the airport! I think it's a broadcast from somewhere nearby, I dunno, I'm still confused :?
Can you check what message centre the message is coming from?
Are these messages Premium-based ?(do they show up on your bill?)
Vodafone NL is unable to send out messages with the normal four-digit numbers... (5 for the uk). Instead they use eleven-digit numbers...
Perhaps in the UK it's the same?
I'd check if you have to pay for receiving those messages...
On the Vodafone website you should be able to retreive info on who's using the specific number...
Goog luck!
might be sent via bluetooth (could be an ad that hasnt displayed right) or it can be send from the internet witch sounds most likley

Agreed.
Especially since SMS's like these seem to be free coming from theSMSzone.com
Hi,
thanks for the replies, and sorry for the delay in me coming back! The messages aren't coming from a Bluetooth device, because my Bluetooth is always switched off unless I'm in the car.
I don't know how to find the service centre they're coming from, can anybody tell me how?
The messages do not appear on our bills. One thing I've noticed, now that I've upgraded to the 1.40 ROM, is that the sender now has a name of 'Network' rather than blank as it was before.
Obviously there's no harm in these messages, but they're a pain and I'd like to work out where they're coming from to satisfy my own curiousity[sp]!
my uncle has the same thing qith hi unlocked xda2i
he has a t mobile contarct and the messages seem to come fromthe network,
i will have to speak to him to find out why and when they come, but my advice is to ask tmobile about theae messages as i belive there comming from them.

Hi Ariel,
thanks for your post, and great to hear someone else has this problem and not just us! I spoke today to our service provider, who'd never heard of this before, so he spoke to T-Mobile who also claim to have never heard of this before. They want me to keep a log of dates/times when the message appears  , so that's what I'll do.

...have you tried to disable cell broadcast in your phone settings menu? this looks very much like a cell broadcast message, i can enable this on my german vodafone used device and get the area code on this way but i get also lots of bull**** notifications taht way. go to settings/phone and i guess its the third tab on the bottom (maybe fourth) where you can find channel settings for cell broadcast - unable it and it should be gone.
feedback welcome!
cheers, lutz

Hi Lutz,
thanks for the suggestion. I'm on the 1.4 ROM, so there are five tabs at the bottom of that screen; Phone, Services, Network, Band, More. In More, there is Broadcast Channels, and this box is unticked.
Thanks again
Dan
I know there are a couple of threads about this already but mine is a little different.
I got O2 XDA Orbit from ebay - put in my VodafoneUK sim card and everything works fine, MMS, GPRS, Internet and even GPS (don't know if the last one matters) - I haven't upgraded or changed any software or anything but my SMS text messages won't work - they sit in outbox for a minute or so then I get the error msg "your text message cannot be sent".
Ant help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Silly question but does the actual phone work - ie can you call out OK?
Can you receive messages?
My Orbit will receive OK but not always send in a poor signal area.
Stew,
Sorted It!!!!
To your answer sloss yes everything else works but I know what it is now.
I tried Start>Settings>Phone>Services...Voicemail and Text Messaging...select and then Get Settings........BUT it actually receives the WRONG yes the WRONG message centre number from the network.
Got a friends UK Vodafone phone and just copied his message centre number and Viola it worked fine, I'm so happy I could cry!!
Just thought this might help some others who may be having this problem.

Yes, I had this as well. There is a solution you could try.
well i looked at the solution on that page, but that doesnt solve my problem.
because i dont want to buy a new sim card..
is there no other solution then buy a new simcard on a radio higher as 1.00.25.03?
I understand you don't want to replace your SIM. Even though I don't know the exact cause, as far as I know the combination of newer radio's with your current SIM is the problem..
If your telco/provider has a shop in your area, visit them and/or your Diamond dealer. You can do as I did and try to prove that one of their non Diamond mobiles can send sms with your current SIM and prove that you can send sms with your Diamond using one of their newer SIM's. Just swap SIM's and send each other test sms.
It worked for me. By proving there was nothing wrong with my Diamond and SIM as such, but that the combination couldn't send SMS, I got a new SIM for free.. They can probably copy the data from your current SIM to a new one, as well.
Good luck!

Hi,
I have a Norwegian HTC Desire unbranded phone, but i currently live in Qatar and i use it with my sim card in Qatar...
From time to time I write some text messages to Norway to friends and such,
but there is one of my friends I can't reply sms to...
I use "ChompSMS" as a messages client, and his phone nr is saved on my phone memory, with the country prefix and all...
When I compose a new message to him, he gets the text message, but when i reply to the message, the country prefix does not get in cluded in the text, so I get a failure when trying to send it...
When i press "view message failure", the nr its trying to send it to is "90508395" insted of "+4790508395", this is the only contact i have this problem with, all my other norwegians friend i can reply to without a problem..
Anyone have a soloution?
Thanks...
Anyone have a soloution for me?
Would be deeply apriciated....
I had the EXACT same problem and people thought I was crazy.
The only solutions I found were to either to change to Handcent, dont know why, but it fixed it.
OR
Reflash to a new rom. That completely fixed the problem and I was able to go back to chompsms.
Thanks ALOT!
I will try Handcent now, and hopefully it will all go away
Thanks again
It could be also a setting on your friends phone, something like reply to and he has that set up with his nr. but not in intl format. Worth checking...

I got nowhere using chompsms, and no help from posting on the forum. Some googling revealed handcent, which I now use every day. It just works, without requiring googling or forums etc. Like you'd expect an SMS app to be, really.

+1 on the handcent.. Works great for me
Since this morning I am unable to send SMS on my UK GSM Orange Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I am able to make and recieve calls, make and recieve MMS and recieve SMS but cannot send SMS.
Where in ICS can you check the SMS Message centre? Ive tried to view it in the *#*#info#*#* and there is a bit which says SMSC, but if I put in the orange message centre number which I believe is +44 797 3100973 and click update, the update fails. There no other settings I can find in Messager app, and the APN's are correct as I can send/recieve MMS and browse the internet etc.
Ive done a reset also, still same problem.
Can anyone help?
Don't hit update. Just type the number in and exit.

Orange web help states that the following; http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/personal/657975
Ill ring customer services to see if they can send me the message centre number or something. Seems like a bug to me in ICS as this message centre number should be acessible through the messenger app!
Make sure you have the right number. I had the same problem. Updating did not work. Typing it in did.

call orange and ask them to send you an ORANGE MESSAGE UPDATE (OMU)
Have fun getting it sorted. Will be surprised if they fix it within 3 attempts
Fixed it myself!
Since you cannot (currently) go into messages options and set the message centre number normally, you have to use the info screen and the smsc bit.
However you cannot just put in the orange message centre number ( +447973100973). You have to encode it using the following site http://www.twit88.com/home/utility/sms-pdu-encode-decode and at the bottom left box type: n the message centre number in smsc then press convert. It will then give you on the right a Hexadecimal PDU Message. Copy the number excluding the letters and do not include anything after the 11. Ie for orange on the Samsung galaxy nexus the smsc is
0791449737019037. Click update and wait a few seconds then exit and it should work!
What a faff. Ics really needs the message centre number option in the messaging app.
Hope this helps someone.

I had exactly the same problem which the above has helped me fix, so thanks very much Marcus. For info Vodafone converts to "0791447758100650".
I had the same issue as well on my nexus.
I had this issue but fixed it by inserting a SIM from another network(Orange), waiting for it to set up and then swapping back to my Three SIM.
Here's the one for Three UK(contract) just in case anyone needs it 0791447728008000

Didn't work for me On Orange uk. Been having this problem for over a week it's really bugging me. Going to ring orange tomorrow. Probably won't be much help though. Last time i rang and they asked what phone i was using so i told them Galaxy Nexus and their system didn't recognise it
I have this problem and have not been able to find a solution. I'm in the US using SpotMobile. Their smsc is +16104680009, which converts to 07916101640800F911. When I enter this and press update, it gets saved (without the two ending 1s) and the messaging app doesn't give an error when sending a message (and I get charged for it -_-), but the recipient never receives the message.
I've also tried @rbiter's solution, but it doesn't work. The smsc doesn't get saved and I get an error when sending messages.
Any help on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
Take off the last "11". It should be 16 digits, not 18.
Sneaky Way of Fixing this
I too had the same problem. Out of curiosity, I went to check the Hidden phone settings on my Galaxy Nexus, I love looking at the temperature of the battery, network location and all that good stuff. But apparently ICS is glitchy regarding the SMSC settings. It apparently wipes the SMSC number as soon as you enter the hidden phone settings... To find this I went to a series of steps. The first thing I tried was popping in other SIM cards from my carrier (Telcel GSM in Mexico) All of them seemed to work fine.. And my primary SIM which didn't work on my Galaxy Nexus worked on an old Telcel-Locked phone I had.. so this sent me scrambling.. The next thing I tried was to update the SMSC through the process of encryption provided in an earlier post, and normally.. none of them which worked.. I then thought that the Phone must be keeping an erroneous configuration of my SIM card, so I resetted the phone, deleted my G-Account.. and still it would not work. I then popped another Telcel GSM SIM card in my old Blackberry 8520, went to the SMS settings and it had the SMSC number, which for Telcel Mexico is +5294100001410... I then popped in my primary SIM card which was giving me trouble in my Galaxy Nexus and when I went to the SMS settings in the Blackberry.. the SMSC value was gone.. empty.. So I just typed it in and hit save. Popped the SIM card Back in the Galaxy Nexus.. and It's all good again. Android ICS in the Galaxy Nexus just wipes the SMSC value as soon as you enter the hidden menu and is unable to rewrite it to the SIM card. I had to use the Blackberry to properly configure my SIM card again.. Funny, I thought I would never use the Blackberry for anything away.. I got to use some of the junk I keep around..

It gets saved without the last "11" anyway, so it doesn't make a difference.
It's looking like putting the SIM card in another phone and changing the SMSC might be the only way. Too bad I don't have any old phones that take SIM cards
Shoot, was hoping that would work for you!

Did Orange send out any updates to you? They refused to for me for 24 hours as my number only just got transferred from Virgin.
Edit: Turns out it was just a coincidence that my smsc got deleted as the number porting actually failed (I can receive texts and make/receive calls which is a bit odd).
I also ended up ballsing this up when I was looking at the 4636 menus.
For those interested, the number/code for T-mobile UK is 0791449785788938
