[Q] I cannot send SMS GSM Orange Network - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Since this morning I am unable to send SMS on my UK GSM Orange Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I am able to make and recieve calls, make and recieve MMS and recieve SMS but cannot send SMS.
Where in ICS can you check the SMS Message centre? Ive tried to view it in the *#*#info#*#* and there is a bit which says SMSC, but if I put in the orange message centre number which I believe is +44 797 3100973 and click update, the update fails. There no other settings I can find in Messager app, and the APN's are correct as I can send/recieve MMS and browse the internet etc.
Ive done a reset also, still same problem.
Can anyone help?

Don't hit update. Just type the number in and exit.

Orange web help states that the following; http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/personal/657975
Ill ring customer services to see if they can send me the message centre number or something. Seems like a bug to me in ICS as this message centre number should be acessible through the messenger app!

Make sure you have the right number. I had the same problem. Updating did not work. Typing it in did.

call orange and ask them to send you an ORANGE MESSAGE UPDATE (OMU)

Have fun getting it sorted. Will be surprised if they fix it within 3 attempts

Fixed it myself!
Since you cannot (currently) go into messages options and set the message centre number normally, you have to use the info screen and the smsc bit.
However you cannot just put in the orange message centre number ( +447973100973). You have to encode it using the following site http://www.twit88.com/home/utility/sms-pdu-encode-decode and at the bottom left box type: n the message centre number in smsc then press convert. It will then give you on the right a Hexadecimal PDU Message. Copy the number excluding the letters and do not include anything after the 11. Ie for orange on the Samsung galaxy nexus the smsc is
0791449737019037. Click update and wait a few seconds then exit and it should work!
What a faff. Ics really needs the message centre number option in the messaging app.
Hope this helps someone.

I had exactly the same problem which the above has helped me fix, so thanks very much Marcus. For info Vodafone converts to "0791447758100650".

I had the same issue as well on my nexus.

I had this issue but fixed it by inserting a SIM from another network(Orange), waiting for it to set up and then swapping back to my Three SIM.
Here's the one for Three UK(contract) just in case anyone needs it 0791447728008000

Didn't work for me On Orange uk. Been having this problem for over a week it's really bugging me. Going to ring orange tomorrow. Probably won't be much help though. Last time i rang and they asked what phone i was using so i told them Galaxy Nexus and their system didn't recognise it

I have this problem and have not been able to find a solution. I'm in the US using SpotMobile. Their smsc is +16104680009, which converts to 07916101640800F911. When I enter this and press update, it gets saved (without the two ending 1s) and the messaging app doesn't give an error when sending a message (and I get charged for it -_-), but the recipient never receives the message.
I've also tried @rbiter's solution, but it doesn't work. The smsc doesn't get saved and I get an error when sending messages.
Any help on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Take off the last "11". It should be 16 digits, not 18.

Sneaky Way of Fixing this
I too had the same problem. Out of curiosity, I went to check the Hidden phone settings on my Galaxy Nexus, I love looking at the temperature of the battery, network location and all that good stuff. But apparently ICS is glitchy regarding the SMSC settings. It apparently wipes the SMSC number as soon as you enter the hidden phone settings... To find this I went to a series of steps. The first thing I tried was popping in other SIM cards from my carrier (Telcel GSM in Mexico) All of them seemed to work fine.. And my primary SIM which didn't work on my Galaxy Nexus worked on an old Telcel-Locked phone I had.. so this sent me scrambling.. The next thing I tried was to update the SMSC through the process of encryption provided in an earlier post, and normally.. none of them which worked.. I then thought that the Phone must be keeping an erroneous configuration of my SIM card, so I resetted the phone, deleted my G-Account.. and still it would not work. I then popped another Telcel GSM SIM card in my old Blackberry 8520, went to the SMS settings and it had the SMSC number, which for Telcel Mexico is +5294100001410... I then popped in my primary SIM card which was giving me trouble in my Galaxy Nexus and when I went to the SMS settings in the Blackberry.. the SMSC value was gone.. empty.. So I just typed it in and hit save. Popped the SIM card Back in the Galaxy Nexus.. and It's all good again. Android ICS in the Galaxy Nexus just wipes the SMSC value as soon as you enter the hidden menu and is unable to rewrite it to the SIM card. I had to use the Blackberry to properly configure my SIM card again.. Funny, I thought I would never use the Blackberry for anything away.. I got to use some of the junk I keep around..

It gets saved without the last "11" anyway, so it doesn't make a difference.
It's looking like putting the SIM card in another phone and changing the SMSC might be the only way. Too bad I don't have any old phones that take SIM cards

Shoot, was hoping that would work for you!

Did Orange send out any updates to you? They refused to for me for 24 hours as my number only just got transferred from Virgin.
Edit: Turns out it was just a coincidence that my smsc got deleted as the number porting actually failed (I can receive texts and make/receive calls which is a bit odd).

I also ended up ballsing this up when I was looking at the 4636 menus.
For those interested, the number/code for T-mobile UK is 0791449785788938

ok when i send a txt msg on my t-mobile phone my msg's for example display like this
Me: Hey Matt how are you
Matt: Good you
etc
I have a pic stored in Matt's profile so when he msgs me there is a little square pic of him next to his name. Now what I cannot figure out is next to my name is a grey stock android pic and i cannot figure out how to change it.
Now i do not have facebook and nothing other then gmail is linked to my account. Funny thing is when i txt msg myself the msg comes out like this
Me:Test
Jason:Test (thats my name)
now my gmail profile pic shows beside my name when i send to myself but I never get a pic for my sent msg.
thanks
It sounds like you have set yourself up as a contact already, so you might want to check if your phone number shows up properly in your settings (About Phone->Settings). If the number is unknown, that would explain the gray box.
Are you running a custom ROM? If using CM6, enter your phone number manually at Settings->Call settings->Additional settings->My phone number (you'll have to do this on every boot most likely). If you are on stock ROM, you may want to give T-Mobile a call and ask them to push your phone number to your SIM card (they can do this over the air). Not sure about with other ROMs.
Checked my settings and my phone number does shows up as unknown...and I have myself saved as a contact. I am not running a custom rom yet but I am permarooted and all unlocked/off'd.

How do I fix the phone number unknown?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
If your not running a custom ROM then it is most likely your SIM card. Your phone number can't be read from the SIM card, you can ask you carrier to push the number or get a replacement SIM card or if you have access to an old Sony Ericsson then you can edit the number on that phone
I know a few of the custom ROM's have problems reading the SIM card but if your not rooted then it can only be your SIM card.
Hope this helps & don't forget to say thanks!

I can't send text messages anymore after looking at hidden settings.

Yesterday I was reading a thread about issues on signal loss and there was a *#*# number that brought up info about networks. I didn't change anything but was curious as to what was in there. Now today I can't send any text messages to anyone. Is this related? I can't remember the number and I wouldn't know what to look for anyways. Any thoughts on how to resolve this would be appreciated.

You need to find your messaging center number for your network. Then go back to dialer. Type *#*#4636#*#*. Then type that messaging number in the smsc box. DO NOT hit update or refresh. It won't do anything on this phone. Typing the number is enough.

I too had the same problem, Apparently when you go to the hidden info in the Galaxy Nexus it wipes the SMSC. I tried doing everything to fix it, i even factory resetted my phone, and when this didn't work I did the most desperate thing. I popped in my SIM card in an old Blackberry 8520 and when I went to the SMS settings.. the SMSC value wasn't there, so I just simply typed it in and hit save. Popped the SIM card back in my Galaxy Nexus.. and done.. It's all good again.
ICS is glitchy regarding the SMSC settings.. literally.. deleting it and not being able to update it.. anyway.. I got it fixed.
BTW, I'm with Telcel GSM in Mexico. the SMSC number is +5294100001410

Not exactly. It wipes it if you hit UPDATE in the hidden menu at the SMSC area, with nothing typed in. So don't do that. Just looking at the setting page won't wipe a thing.
If you do, you'll have to research your SMSC #, etc etc etc.
EDIT:
BTW, attached is a list of SMSC #s I found. Dunno if they're exactly up to date. But the T-Mobile # is current.

the sim solution doesn't work all the time. didn't for me. hitting update when i typed in my number didn't solve it either. just typing it in and leaving the menu worked. was about to throw the phone at the wall. anyways, ymmv with the solution. i am throwing this out there so anybody who searches will exhaust all options before throwing it at the wall.
Try running the App "SIM card toolkit". It should be on your device by default and it will import SMSC data and the like automatically.

[Q] Outgoing SMS Stopped Working!!

Hey guys,
Not sure what happened with my T-Mo SGSII, but my outgoing SMS keep failing to send. I did not do anything to the phone or its software at all.
Everything was working perfectly fine about about 2 hours ago..I got home from work and it just stopped. All other services are working perfectly fine (3G/4G Data, Incoming/Outgoing Calls, even Incoming SMS).
Only Outgoing Text messaging is affected :S
I contacted my service provider (Wind Mobile), whom I actually work for..and they were unable to resolve the issue.
Furthermore, I am no longer able the to access the SMSC Service Menu via the dialpad (*#*#4636#*#*). After entering the code, nothing happens. It does not return an error, nor does it exit the dialpad..nothing.
Is there an alternate way to accessing the Service Menu so I can re-enter the SMSC Code, in case it is incorrect and the reason why the SMS aren't being sent ???
Oh, and, I've also formatted my phone and installed a new ROM (Malice)..tried accessing the menu, still nothing. And texts aren't working either.
Please help!!! I need my texts to be working for work purposes. I appreciate your time.
The same thing happens to me once in a while don't know why. When I send a text it just keeps saying sending, and never sends. I figured out that if I reflash my radio it fixes it. Try that, hope it works for you!

Just for giggles change your APN to internet2.voicestream.com ....
(I Know this should not affect SMS only MMS, but give it a try)
Thanks everyone for your input..
I tried another Sim card to check whether it was my actual device..it's not.
The message center does not have a number assigned, and I am unable to access the settings to manually input the SMSC.
I tried using a different phone to enter the information onto my SIM card, unfortunately that phone is too old and lacks the feature¿
Anyway, I've decided to just get a SIM swap. I work in a Wind Mobile retail store so I can easily swap out the SIM.
I still have one concern though..
Why am I not able to access the service menu via *#*#4636#*#* ???
I tried 2 other SIM cards, one from Wind and the other from Rogers. I was still unable to access that menu :S
I thought it was the ROM so I flashed cm7, as well as malice. Both resulting in the same manner; not working at all. Oh and I also changed the radio twice, and even the kernel..but to no avail.
I really appreciate everyone's time and help...but please help me resolve the issue with accessing that menu as well. (*#*#4636#*#*)
Thanks again.

Any way to change my SMSC (SMS Service Center)?

Hello everyone,
I'm on the current AOKP Milestone (4.2.2) on a maguro (GSM version)
I have to switch between two sim cards from two different countries and I cannot send SMS from one of them (just reports an error without any further info "SMS could not be sent."). Which is really bad for me since I have to activate my data and minute plans by sms.
Tried this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979564
Still can't send sms.
Tried changing the SIM Card's messaging center on an old phone, still cannot send sms.
Is there any other way of changing the messaging center? Or is there at least a way to verify which one my phone is currently using?
Thanks a lot guys
What written there really is the solution. Putting the right number on SMSC field and clicking Update solved it for me.
Are you sure you put the correct number in and did a restart to make sure? Try googleing "<your carrier> SMSC" to find the number.
If nothing helps including trying on another phone, why not call the carrier for support?
Sorry for the late reply. I put the SIM card in an older phone and it gave me an error message saying it was a network error. Since it's a new SIM card that's possible so I'll have to contact the provider.
Yesterday a friend of mine ran out of battery on his iphone and put his sim card into my nexus and again it wasn't able to send sms. So he used another friend's iPhone and everything was fine. What's wrong there? SMS seems to be a difficult task for our nexus... or on android in general

[Q] No SMS or MMS after Straight Talk Switch (UPDATE 6/30/14)

I understand this thread may be in the incorrect location, so mods or admins feel free to move it to the correct location.
So yesterday I changed over from AT&T to Straight Talk on the bring your own phone feature.
I used my Galaxy Note 2 (not a clone) Jelly Bean 4.1.2 software. I am able to place and receive phone calls as well as access the internet so far. My MMS is functioning to send pictures, however will not receive them. Also, my SMS does not function for sending or receiving text at all.
I followed the instructions on Straight Talk for setting the APN. When I did that I had no internet or sending of MMS. I found on google some other APN settings which made my internet and sending MMS work.
My current settings are as follows.
Name: straight talk
APN: tfdata
Proxy: not set
Port: 80
MMSC: h t t p : / / mms-tf . net (without spaces)
MMS Proxy: mms3 . tracfone . com (without spaces)
MMS Port: 80
It's only been 24 hours since I switched but I've spent basically that entire time trying different APN's I found online.
I also made a Facebook account and went to the support tab on their facebook. I chatted with a person from tech support, however they were unable to resolve my issue. It was the exact same thing as talking to a tech support member at their 800 number. It was a whole lot of...
"send yourself a text and see if you get it"
Didn't work
"okay turn your phone off and back on again"
okay
"try sending yourself a text and see if you get it"
nope didn't work still
"okay trying deleting your text messages, it's probably full"
okay
"restart the phone and try to send yourself a message"
didn't work again
"Okay make sure your APN settings are exactly as they are on our website"
yep they are
"Okay now try to reboot your phone again and send yourself a message"
Wait a minute...you had me LOOK at my APN settings and since they're okay, we are just going to reboot again? Really?
"Okay we are going to walk you through a factory reset of your phone. You will probably lose any pictures, video or music you had saved on the phone. Let me know when you are ready to go ahead with the process"
Ummmm...CLICK...I hung up...
Except the chat support operator hung up on me when I tried their facebook support. They simply disconnected leaving behind a message saying "to assist you further, we will need to speak to you directly, please call our 800 number blah blah blah". They basically had me do the same thing as the phone operator except they once even had me remove my sim card and put it back in then reboot.
So...I still have no SMS or MMS.
I don't feel like it's going to be an APN setting issue because I tried every APN I could find on google yesterday and today. They all seem to allow me to do the same things and they all seem to restrict SMS. I find this odd because most people with APN problems, the main complaint seems to just be not being able to send/receive MMS only.
I was unable to delete or edit the AT&T APN that was already in the phone. Unfortunately the APN Backup & Restore app will not work for me because my software is version 4.1.2 so I'm feeling trapped here. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Here's my apn guide. Hopefully it might help you...

Is that stock firmware?
Have the device ever been rooted?
Did ya get it used?

Well after my wife talked to ST with some attitude they have finally offered to send a new sim card to me, which is the first new thing they've tried not involving rebooting my phone. I don't have much faith in it providing a fix. If it does, I will update this thread to show my findings, however if it does not I will be returning to AT&T to get a gophone sim.

No my phone isn't rooted.
Yes it's stock
I don't know if it's ever been rooted. I am the second owner of this phone.
Yes I got the phone used.
I'll look at your link. I'm not afraid to keep trying other options right now. My new sim won't be here for another 3 to 5 days. That's way too long to be without sms. I downloaded Voxer and can send text and pictures through its features but not everyone in my contacts has Voxer or wants to get another app just because of me. This has sucked all the way around.
So my new SIM card arrived today. I installed it immediately and placed a call to Straight Talk via a different phone (wifes iPhone) to activate it. I am well finished activating my new SIM and am able to place calls as well as send MMS, yet still cannot receive them nor send/receive SMS yet. It's been a several hours now and nothing. This sucks. I didn't want to wipe my phone completely but I tried it. Back to factory settings and still nothing. In the process of downloading all my apps and putting all my pictures back on my phone now. Blah.
For anyone interested in hearing how this turned out, I sort of have an answer. My SMS and MMS both work now as well as internet.
After putting my new SIM card in and having Straight Talk re-provision my account, then hard resetting my phone, it ended up working after about 5 hours. I kept trying to send SMS off and on during that time and suddenly a message made it to my wifes phone and she was able to reply. So far everyone in my contacts can get messages and reply. It was Straight Talks problem all along.
UPDATE: So I crushed my Note 2 in a machine at work while using the flash light app on it. The sim card and memory card survived. I ordered a new Note 2 unlocked from Amazon. The only difference between the new phone and my old one aside from color, is that mine was not unlocked and this one is.
I put my same sim card from the old phone into the new one. Everything worked again except mms. After going back and forth with ST trying to get a new sim card again, they had me set my apn mms proxy to "mms3 . tracfone . com" without the spaces. After a restart, I was able to send pictures to my wife and get pictures from her. I sent pictures to various contacts all morning and suddenly have a new problem. Now my pictures say they failed and have an exclamation point next to them in my inbox, but my contacts were still getting pictures after that occurred. I did a restart again and now they don't get pictures and I still get the exclamation point. Also I get a pop up that says Error: Network Error Occurred. Any ideas?

Well, I tried that. This time when I sent a picture, I got the swirling circle (loading) to the lower right of the picture I tried to send. It was loading for about 2 or 3 minutes and finally showed that it sent. Everyone was getting my pictures 3 times on their phones before my phone would say it failed. This time, my wife got my picture one time and it shows on my phone that it did send. Thanks for the help.
I think it took a while to send just now because I'm being throttled by Straight Talk.
