As the title implies...
I was finally able to repack the Stock Pulled Kernel from bubby323 with a little help from mkasick, and add CWM5. thats the only change.
No root, no Busybox, nothing else. But I am appending zips to install those here in my post.
What's the point you might ask?
Well as everyone knows, the source released from samsung was some bull****... LoStKernel, makes the best use of that source and adds lots of tweaks, and in my opinion is the best compiled custom kernel available...
But, some people stand by the point that only the stock pulled kernel is free from LoS, or is the LoS is least Rampant for them in that kernel.. But they want CWM too!
Well here it is, the Kernel it self is untouched, only the initramfs has been modified.
Updated 10-23-2011:
Added CWM 5.0.2.6 from Koush
and made some initramfs changes to make it more compatible with Rom Manager in the future.
Updated 10-27-2011:
Updated to CWM 5.0.2.7 from Koush
added init.d support
Updated 10-28-2011:
Updated initramfs layout similar to Koush's mentioned here.
though this one doesn't include stock recovery because of repack space limitations..

Correct me if I'm wrong (anyone)...but since you are already rooted running the stock kernel, you'll gain CWM.

just flashed over midnight 2.1, appears to still have root... will give it a shot... only had maybe 5 LoS in the 5 days ive been rooted, NONE before... hopefully this is the ticket, and the problem was sammys 'source code'... thanks for this!
Thanks guys. So to confirm, just flash the CWM.tar in ODIN and nothing else and i'll be fine? No loss of existing data and settings e.t.c?
Thanks for the kernel.
When will CM5 support nand backup/restore to usb storage?
ok, just used quickboot to get into cwm... sadly I forgot the salute for the touch, anyways, once in cwm it couldnt mount anything... got stuck when I selected mount usb, battery pull, power button, went to cwm, then rebooted itself, now seems ok... is this a quickboot issue, or did this kernel just not like my existing setup (midnight 2.1 installed as directed)? Kernel version says 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EG30-CL435734... just wondering if its user error or I need to reflash the kernel... did NOT wipe anything, as I thought w/ kernels it was unnecessary... everything else seems fine, Titanium reports the same busybox, SU, and root as before... just wondering if this worked... I know the changes are subtle... but just checkin

ok so to be clear cwm5 only works with external sdcard on this kernel. Because it works fine with the internal storage on the custom kernels do you have any insight as to y it doesnt work with this stock one?
It should work exactly as it does on my custom kernels...
Flash zips from internal and external
Back up and restore from external.
If that's not how its working, then I will need to look at it when I get home.

Rooted Epic 4g EC05 Stock rom
You have to provide more information so we can help you out. What ROM are you installing? What is your current recovery? Are you using the purp 3.1.0.1? Did you wipe System/data, cache partition, and Dalvik Cache 3x? We can get you straightened out. Just give some more details.

all ROM's do it but im trying to convert over to ext4 and run syndicate ROM . Yes i have wiped data/factory restore and flushed dalvik 3x every time... cwm recovery v2.5.1.0
you cant install srf 1.2 on that recovery.. you need to upgrade to 3.1.0.1, cwm2x does not support ext4
You need to update clockwork to 3.1.0.1. You're using an outdated recovery.

Rom manager doesn't really work for epic. You have to turn off your phone and then hold camera, vol down and power to get into your recovery. Check qbking's videos. They will make a lot of sense. You may want to odin your phone and restart. I'm not sure how much craziness you may have started. Backup major stuff with Titanium and everything will pretty much be normal without major loss.
Wow, its been a while since I was that far back on recovery. Let me check TheRoot's link...EDIT..yup TheRoot's link has a flashable version of the 3.1.0.1 recovery that will get you right where you want to be to flash all of the current batch of ROMs. PM me if you get stuck and I will go step by step

After you finish, download ACS updater and it'll give you the goodness you were looking for in Rom Manager. There's also a support thread in Apps.

Hey guys, I've been running into a ton of issues. Basically, all I want to do is get to the point where I can flash custom ROM's onto my Samsung Epic 4G. I am on Stock Froyo EC05 Rooted and have ClockWorkMod 2.5.1.0! I understand that the best way to go about things is to first update the Clockworkmod to 3.1.x.x but what is an easy way to do this from 2.5.1.0? Do I have to go through the entire root process again just to update clockwork or do I have to remove my root entirely and start from scratch? What's the best way to go about this and how do you do it?
Hope to hear what you guys think.

As for custom roms just go into development and pick on that you think you'll like read the included list and pick from that. Id suggest checking out legendary 2.2 as a starting point if you don't like the theme you can always flash one. As for a custom kernel check out the samurai kernel from earthbound. Make sure you get the TW.BML version not mtd.

Yeah, I've checked out a few Rom's and I know what I'm looking for, I just want that ClockworkMod updated. Also, for custom ROM's, is it better to have the EXT4 filesystem instead of RFS? which clockwork version will automatically covert it to EXT4?

The ROM does the conversion.... and EXT4 is for speed but RFS is more for reliablity not to say the ext4 isn't safe but its not as reliable as RFS. But it safe to use but I know very few people losing data because of undervolting but that was the only thing that caused it. However you need rfs then I can give you the zip to flash and convert it.

Rfs, because its still considered more stable. Ext4 still has stability issues, although considered faster.

Ok. Also, I made a complete backup with Mybackup Pro to my SD card and it works great! However, would it still restore everything If I'm on a different filesystem? I was also wonderung, since I'm on stock froyo, are you sure I can upgrade CWM 2.5.1.0 straight to 5.x.x.x? I heard there might be some issues with that.
Another thing, What ROM do you recommend to be the best. I do want certain features and was looking at the CleanGB and the Legendary ROMS. I basically want one that is fast, barely any bloatware, has the 3d app drawer, and the CRT animation. I also want it to have loopback so I could put Backtrack 5 on my phone just in case I need to use it.
Recovery is independent of the software version. I had cwm 5 on froyo before.

Legendary is faster cleangb is stock really and is on rfs..... and ur fine just flashing my upload... as for the apps don't use that for your apps bringing over apps from different roms escpecially froyo to gb is dangerous and I recomend you just download the apps again from the market. Or you can nandroid and advanced restore the data....

I did check out the thread on the newest ClockWorkMod 5 but it said that you should have 3.1.x.x, will this work with 2.5.1.0 to 5.x.x.x?
Update: I successfully flashed CWM 2.5.1.0 to 5.0.2.7! Now when I flash a new ROM, is there only one Zip file to flash or do I need to flash a ROM and a new Kernel/Modem?
Not the slightest clue but I have the 3.1 purple zip you can flash if you do need to do that.

I've tried enabling the bluetooth both thru the pull down button and through the settings menu. It acts like it's starting to turn on, and then after a few seconds, just goes dark again.
Tried reboot. No luck.
Used ACS Recovery to do a pre-ROM wipe before flashing the new ROM.
Can't post in developers forum yet, so hopefully someone here can help. I read every page and every entry in the applicable forum for the ROM I flashed, but no one reported this problem or solutions.
Any ideas? I'd rather not have to flashback to stock or whatever. I've seen plenty of helpful posts for other bugs in the ROM. Just nothing for this. HELP!

Backup that rom... flash a different rom... if bluetooth works then its that rom... btw I would strongly suggest not using acs recovery... use cwm 5.0.2.7... it is the officially supported recovery for our epics! Also acs does not play well with mtd roms so that may be your problem!

Thank u all for the replies. I DID use ACS to do the pre-rom wipe, but I thought CWM got changed afterwards, somewhere in the process of flashing the new ROM, etc. Funny that several of you mentioned the possibility of that being the issue. I went to boot into recovery to check, and my phone bricked. #*(#@$%&. So, I had to odin back to stock and then root again, then use Titaniun just to get to my pre-ROM settings. I'm just gonna go without the custom ROM for now.

You mean sponged, not bricked. As long as there is life you are not bricked. Just grab the official CWM 5.027 and flash that. When doing conversions like that don't use ROM Manager and all should be well. When in doubt, wipe wipe wipe.
Hi,
I'm thinking of taking the jump into CleanGB 1.05 MTD. Currently I have a rooted EI22 build. I'm going to update to the EI30 modem first but I'm unsure of the steps to get the CleanGB 1.05 build installed because of the change to the MTD filesystem. There is a how to video on the BML 1.03 page but I can't find anything on the MTD 1.05 build. From reading I think there are extra steps I need to take, or maybe the ROM does all the steps already.
Doea anyone have a link to a video, or instructions for loading the CleanGB 1.05 MTD ROM?
Thanks
JM
As long as you have ClockworkMod you are good to go. Most (I think all) MTD roms auto-convert for you. Then enjoy!
^^^^exactly... if you have cwm 5.0.2.7 you're good to go... if you're using acs recovery flash cwm first... all the roms do the work fo you...

I would think so... but people have reported errors using acs recovery when trying to conver to mtd using that recovery... so 3.x.x.x may give you the same problems... never tried it though so I'm not 100% sure...
Edit- and after flashing an mtd rom and converting to mtd DO NOT flash another recovery... not even 5.0.2.7... the cwm that the mtd rom installs is the only recovery that works on mtd for our phones

MTD ROMs have their own MTD only version of CWM 5.0.2.7 that gets flashed with the conversion. Do not try to change it after converting..
It is also best to just update to CWM 5 before trying to convert. Just to be sure.

Sweet, found the perfect thread for my question
I'm running cleanGB Mtd 1.05, came from CM7. I have unsuccessfully tried to flash a few things, I have an epic ringtones zip I picked up somewhere along the way that gives you a ton more system ringtones, I also tried to flash some ei22 transparent mms themes....anyway, none worked. did the usual process, wiped cache, dalvik, and nada. Nothing there. At least they didn't cause any harm either.
Not sure why this is....my only guess was they were designed for bml ROMs? Thought i had a good understanding of bml/mtd in which case i didn't think it would really matter which partition I'm on for these flashable zips to work....any takers?

You have to mount system anytime you want to flash something in MTD except ROMs and kernels...they seem to mount system for you. Restoring backups do not need system mounting either. MTD is still a new animal to us.
lol, we crossed posts, I was just editing that last one but you already were lightning fast on the reply. Thanks for that, and all that you contribute to the forum, I know your work well!

Just glad to help. I kick myself everytime I forget to mount system.

MTD ROMs have their own MTD only version of CWM 5.0.2.7 that gets flashed with the conversion. Do not try to change it after converting..
It is also best to just update to CWM 5 before trying to convert. Just to be sure.

Does that mean that, once converted to mtd, a person can back up and restore freely?
I had been holding off on the mtd because i thought restoring a nandroid would be cumbersome. Something about changing all the ext4 to yaffs2 in order to make it work.

You can back up and restore your MTD ROM freely, even a way of using ROM Manager (ask me). BUT you cannot restore backups of BML ROMs without jumping through all those hoops that you hinted about.

You must go into mounts and storage in cwm and mount /system... flash... unmount /system.... reboot...

Too slow....but more thorough to make up for it...LOL.
I am sure I have forgotten to unmount as well....need some of that Chinkocobra or whatever it's called.
I'm going to hijack my own thread to ask this. I do not have enough posts to put this in the developers fourm which is probably a better place.
How do the custom ROM's for the EPIC4g (any phone I guess) come about? The few ROM's I've looked at seem to be one man operations (i.e. toadlife for the CleanGB I use). Clearly the CM effort is a larger team effort. I'm very happy with the CleanGB ROM after a few days of use but I'm looking forward to an ICS based phone. I don't think I'm brave enough to jump onto a release candidate so I'm probably not switching to CM9 RC0 any time soon.
So is the normal path of develpment for the CM team the first release a new ROM (CM7 for gingerbread, CM9 for ICS,..) and then do the other custom ROM developers take this as a starting point to do their thing? Now that CM9 RC0 is out should I expect to see a bunch of custom RC0 ROMs released in the next few weeks?
Thanks for the help. Oh and if you see Toadlife ask him when CleanICS-MTD is coming ;-)

i just picked up an e4gt today, i had one back in december that i rooted then sold. so im back and now there's a ton of stuff out there for this phone.
i just came over from the evo design where there is pretty much nothing happening, and before that i had an evo shift. i had cm7 installed on that and loved it.
so what rom do you guys suggest i use? i see there is cm9 available in alpha form, which has me very tempted.
im looking for a stable rom with no bloatware. and id love some advice.

Go with cm9 that darchstar has posted. It works great and I use it as my daily. After you do the base install I recommend nightly 7/24 and using the chris41g kernel b3 version with it. Great battery life and full functionality.

Does cm9 wipe out cwm?
I'm paranoid to do anything without an option for recovery.

Here is your safest bet (as in super safe):
1. Download the el26 safe cwm kernel from the kernel repository in the sticky for this phone
2. Download cm9 6 and gapps
3. Follow cm9 6 download instructions
4. Let it boot
5. Use mobile Odin if you have it (highly recommend as it makes flashing so easy) and flash the el26 kernel that you downloaded in the kernel section from external sd...always check md5 sum first!
6. Once u see the blue light on ur phone in the LED, hold power+volume up to boot into recovery, once the sgs2 logo shows you can lay off the buttons
7. If you didn't do it in time or held too long, just pull the battery and go to recovery via power+volume up
8. You should be in cwm, flash the nightly of cm9, clear dalvik and cache, then flash the chris 41g b3 kernel and reboot
9. Enjoy
10. From this point forward you have a bomb rom and working recovery that will allow backup/nand/flashing safely.

Look into Blu Kuban(team venum). No bloat, excellent help from dev. Plenty of options/mods/hacks/updates/themed apps/speed/great battery.
Ditto on Alex. Excellent support... Great battery life. It's themed so you should look at the screenshots and the video on the dev site.

ok, i think im going to try the cm9 route, but i cannot find the correct kernel, or im doing something wrong. i got odin for android, and downloaded a couple of kernels i thought were the right ones and they didnt show up when i tried to select them with odin.

The chris41g kernel has its own thread in development, grab the zip format of the cwm b3 version.

im not finding a b3 version. but i did download the first kernel from chris41g
StockCWM-EL26.zip
i hope thats correct. im going to do a nandroid backup and give it a shot later today. thanks for the help and advice!
its been several months since ive been flashing roms, and i find that it takes me a few days to get back in the swing of things before im flashing again.
The b3 kernel is at chris's goo which is linked to in this xda thread.

So I need to flash el26 kernel first, then I flash 41g-CWM-RC1-b3-0723.zip. then I can flash cm9 and gapps from recovery?

El26, boot to recovery, install cm9 per their install guide...after successful install, flash el26 again, wipe cache/dalvik, and install the chris41g kernel from there.

ok, so i got cm9 on the phone. very excited, except for the launcher wont allow me to add widgets. wierd, same thing with my touchpad.
anyway i tried to flash el26 and it stalled at the splash screen, so i opened up recovery and wiped cache and dalvik, then installed the chris41g kernel. and no dice. aaaanyway. whats the benefit to the other kernels versus what i get with cm9? and is there a solution to my problem?
I read 4g is unreliable on Chris' new kernels

well, im not sure what to do now. i love cyanogenmod, and id put up with a few hiccups if i could. but it looks like i wont be able to use this as a daily rom. very disappointing...
so, i might try the blu kuban rom.
at this point i want a debloated stable rom. im back to a rooted stock rom with el29.
i just dont want to brick my phone, i have insurance and can take it in to swap it out. its just a waste of time if i can avoid it.
any other suggestions?

Start with thread #1 on the attached link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625535
To Install
Boot to recovery
Make an NAND Backup
Wipe the phone (with the Format All X2 script)
Flash Part 1
Boot the phone
Go to the updater (Under put things back to stock) and install Part 2 (Two part install is to finish theming Talk)
Reboot and Enjoy
When I did this I went to CWM to flash this through odin. Rom works very smooth. There is a ton of information in the thread but that should get you started.
