S-ON wipe Recovery? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Okay, this is a quick and probably stupid question. I just used jcase's method to return my phone to stock (now it's running Froyo, and I declined the GB upgrade). I have to return it under warranty, but I just want to confirm that they won't find anything wrong with it. Is the recovery overwritten? I know I am S-ON so is that enough? Thank you so much for your help!

S-On
I'm going to follow up with another stupid question.. if i get S-Off from Alpharev, is there a way to return it back to S-on? i know with the original Dinc there was an S-on Zip.. i know they're completely different phones, but can i use that to S-on again? is there something in ADB to redo it?
If i get S-off.. i DO want to keep it, i'm just talking about warrenty purposes..
Ya I found that out right after.. my Googling skills were weak for a little bit then i realized i couldnt find anything to return it to stock because i had Dunc 2 written instead of Dinc 2... and Google apparently found it funny to not give me the Suggested search...

Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnlnWW8tsvo and follow it with jcase's guide (link in video description). I was anxious about messing something up but this was really easy.

[Q] confused with s-on/off....

So I will be unrooting my phone tonight so I can take it to sprint tomorrow. Before I do the unroot can someome please clear some confusion up for me? Ok so I rooted with 3.21 the other day. I have read and watched the video by djr3z regarding the unroot in 2 steps. I know he says you need to use the s-on tool only if you used UR forever... which i did not use. As I read on further, people were saying sometimes the boot loader says s-off even though it is not off which mine is s-off. So I noticed that guide was posted on the 12th prior to 3.21 being released so I'm not sure if anything changed. So my sort but sweet question is do I need to apply the s-on zip prior to actually unrooting? Sorry for so much crap but i have been searching and can't get a precise answer..Anyways anyone who can clear this up for me would be the man or woman! As always THANKS!
Maybe I should have put this in the general section.. oops.

Flash the s-on file. It might still say s-off on your boot screen, but after you flash the rom it should then say s-on. So in short, yes, use the s-on file.

Sorry man I had a brain fart and accidentally posted it here. Once I realized it was already too late. I'll pay more attention next time!
I'm afraid you might be still slightly confused. the S-off you're seeing is more likely part of the ENG Bootloader instead of the same as the unrevoked s-off
both do the same thing, but the eng bootloader needs to be replaced for the s-on to re-appear.
That's initially what I was thinking too since I installed Unrevoked 3.21 NOT Unrevoked forever. Installing the s-on just for ****s and giggles wouldn't hurt anything right? I just don't want to unroot and then realize it still has s-off, then have to re root and start over. Any thoughts?
no, it shouldnt hurt anything. Just might not solve your problem if its the bootloader that is s-off

[Q] Need some help

Hello,
I am extremely new to this process and recently just rooted my EVO and would like to know the proper procedures to return my phone to stock if there is an issue eventually with my phone. I rooted using UnrEVOked3 and have the custom recovery installed when it was rooted. I did run a back up recovery right after I rooted.
I tried to figure it out on my own by flashing the RUU that was on theunlockr's site and it worked but was hesitant to run the OTA software update with "S-OFF" still activated. So I rerooted my phone and tried their "S-ON utility but now can’t run the RUU due to a bootloader error. I tried searching but there is so many threads about it that it gets confusing so I figured I would ask directly what my steps should be.
A couple questions:
Should my next step be rerooting the phone and then running the RUU?
Will running a RUU and then running an OTA update be ok if “S-OFF” is still activated?
Will running an OTA update turn “S-OFF” back to “S-ON”?
After I return complete stock can I reroot in the future if I want?
My Bootloader at this time looks like this:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.10.0001
MICROP-04if
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.05.00.06.10
Oct 15 2010, 10:07:00
Sorry for being so new about this but any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
(EDIT: I just read the first post in this thread topic and I'm going to try that since it seems like I'm halfway there. Sorry for killing a kitten lol)
Lol its all good man did you get all your answers or you need help?

Yes you can! Many people unroot when they drop by sprint for whatever reasons, then they root all over again. Me, I'm a rebel, I give the reps my phone with cm7 on it lol.

Return to stock

hey everyone. I am a bit confused, and i would greatly appreciate your help. So I have a Desire Z from bell. Currently this is what I see when i hold vol down, and power:
Vision PVT SHIP S-ON
H-Boot- 0.81.0000
Microp- 0425
eMMc- boot
Sep 2 2010.17:59:38
So I want to get it back to stock. simply just like out of the box. I do have a back up, BUT it still keeps clock work mod recovery. Which I want to get rid of too. like I said JUST LIKE OUT OF THE BOX. So i was doing some research, and I found that a way to do that is to flash to spf file. I dont really know what that is, but I am assuming it a complete stock rom? (correct me, thank you.) So If any of you could provide me with that file, or tell me how to go about doing this, I would be very very thankful. Again, Thank you for all your help.

Hmm not sure what that spf method is. Simply find the thread with all pc10img.zips in it, and find your stock rom. Flash in the bootloader and your good to go!

This is what I see in my software information:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 12.22.60.09bU_26.02.01.15_M2
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.21
Build number: 1.34.666.5
Software number:1.34.666.5
Btw doing this will get rid of clockwork mod too right? THANK YOU!!!!

If your phone has been updated with an ota, it might not be so easy to install a pc10img unless the pc10img IS the ota update. The phone not being rooted and s-on will not let you "downgrade" versions. There may be an easier way, but if you can't simply flash a pc10img, you may have to actually go through all the steps to root/s-off it, THEN you can install the original pc10img.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge with me will just know how to flash the stock recovery if nothing else for you. Here's hoping!

k so right now i am just gonna s-off. then i will try the pc10img again. hopefully it will work, and i will be back to how it was out of the box. without clockwork and root and etc.Thank you so far.
Your welcome. Even after you flash the pc10img it will still be s-off. Just follow the directions that wiki page i gave you to put s back on. It will involve getting temp root on your new stock rom, and having gfree put s back on. Dont worry, it cleans up and does not leave ANY trace that you did the temp root (if you have to send it back or something). Let me know how it goes! I'm watching this in case you need help.

You even confused me with that one. If he was s-on and that start of all of this, the hboot s-stuff has nothing to do with it. Even if it did, installing the pc10img will replace the hboot with the correct one. He used gfree (i think) to get s-off.
I'm sorry OP if i had a desire i would be able to give u the right version to install If you look in the main dev forum i'm sure there is a topic called return desire to stock, and find the pc10img that they recommend. That would be my next suggestion since i really dont know about that phone

I searched a lot. i think my brain is going to explode. I just cant find the right RUU. i tried a couple and they all turn in to error [158] image error. I am so confused at this moment.
I tried RUU_Vision_BellMobility_WWE_1.34.666.1_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.18_M2_release_154437_signed.exe which should work. but it still says error 158. i dont know how to get through this.
okay so i am unrooting now. BUT another roadblock. hboot wont install pc10img it says parsing then returns to the main menu of hboot. i have double checked everything, the image is legit, and the name is fine. when i try to install it through clockwork it says error (bad). i am confused. i will appreciate any help. if u need the firmware info and all, please look at the first few posts.

[Q] S-OFF!! im running stock gingerbread too!!

Ok so i know that gingerbread doesnt have root yet, but i installed the mod for the sense launcher it didnt work but my s-on isnt on its off... i dont know if this means anything to anybody ill upload a pictureee. Does this mean we might be closer to root?
i think i uploaded the picture ?
Yup. U r a lucky Guy. Put a copy of amon RA onto the root of ur SD card. Boot onto the bootloader and when it asks if u want to update say yes. U will then be able to flash whatever u like
If you were s-off before, you should still be s-off after. I have two s-off EVOs that I was going to sell, so I restored them to latest OTA (yea I'm a jerk!) but they stayed s-off (lucky for those when I do decide to sell).
I don't get the point of this, unless you had an S-ON phone and somehow got it S-OFF after the 2.16 hboot and 2.3.3 android upgrade.
YES! thats the thing! I unrooted, got the gingerbread update, after installation and what not it said S-ON. now it says s-off and i have no idea what i did, i been doing so much crap to my phone i dotn even remember what i did. I wanted to try the sense launcher from tommytomatoe and it froze my phone and couldnt do nothing. So i pressed power volume down and it now said s-off.

If what you say is true, you might be able to help the rooting effort by pulling some info off your phone that could be valuable to the devs. I would explain the situation to them, and offer whatever info they need from your phone.
They'll probably call shenanigans on you-- I know I would. But maybe-- just maybe, your Evo carries the mutant X gene that we need to crack this puzzle.
Nice man! maybe just maybe your phone is the "root" of all hahahahaha

Yes i used unrevoke 3 to root but i installed a stock froyo ruu unrooted because after i tried to unroot with unrevoked it didnt work. After i installed the froyo ruu it said S-ON, i then went on to install gingerbread, went back to check the hboot to see if everything was right and it still said S-ON, then i went thru every process to root my phone just to see if i could try soemthing but failed of course. I then wanted to try tommytomatoe sense launcher for unrooted and after my phone froze alot i went to clear data by pressing power and volume down. That is when i saw it was S-OFF. do you want to know anythingg else?
Please unroot again and post pics , you are still trying to unroot are you not. Go go.
Im cant unroot, im not even rooted, im running stock gingerbread ota 4.24.651.1

Don't think running a ruu will turn s-on. Once you are s-off, you are s-off until you run the s-on tool. Correct me if I am wrong.

I say somehow some way when u attempted to re-root it went thru cuz that's the only logical way s-off could've been attained. Clearing ur data won't and u were s-on before u took the OTA update so it wasn't present before hand. Have you tried flashing another rom from recovery just to see if it works? You my friend maybe the "MVD" lol!!!

[Q] Return phone with S-OFF ok?

This was probably asked before but I couldn't find anything on my searches...
I need to return my phone since I got a refurb'd but I'm having issues turning it back to S-ON... has anyone returned their phone with S-OFF? Did they attempt to charge your account or something to that effect? I can definitely do the RUU and return it to stock unrooted but the bootloader shows S-OFF as well as the 6.17 Hboot instead of S-ON and 2.16 Hboot...
TIA!

Well they can't really do anything about us rooting phones since the supreme court says we can do whatever the hell we want to devices we paid for, thanks to the Apple lawsuit. However rooting voids your warranty so I suppose the question is why are you returning. If you are returning it because it's in some way physically defective, you *might* be ok. But if it has malfunctioned, it could bite you in the ass. More information would be helpful.
You should also realize that Sprint has been very inconsistent on this issue. There are those who have had warranty work/returns done and had no issues with it having S-Off and even custom roms still installed. Then there are those who have gotten caught. It should also be pointed out that this is in your contract, so please don't be one of those guys that get denied then RAGE about it on these forums. When you rooted, you clicked a box that said "Your warranty is now void" or at least read that somewhere I am certain! Anyway more info pls, or try it anyway and good luck! Worst thing they will do is give you the phone back and void your warranty totally. You could always toss it in the sink for a few hours then file insurance claim on it.

I tried returning my Evo with S-Off, and the person who was looking at it recognized it in the bootloader. He said "I personally used Revolutionary too. Sadly, we can't return this."
I was able to find a solution, however. Download the zip file attached to this forum post, rename it to PC36IMG.zip, and place on the root of your SD card. Boot into your bootloader. You will be prompted to update. Choose yes. It should flash quick. When it asks you to reboot, choose yes and reboot back into the bootloader. It should show S-ON with 6.17 HBOOT. From there flash your RUU and you should be back to 2.16 HBOOT with S-ON!
I got a refurb a couple months ago and it arrived S-OFF, so I dunno
Thank you all for your responses. I did try to run the RUU and Captain Throwback's S-ON zip but no luck, I'll probably just unroot and RUU it back to the newest firmware and just return it like that. Since borrowedchief said he received his with S-OFF, its probably a hit or miss as most other things at Sprint...
I just sent my old phone back with S-OFF. My issue though was power cycling. Sprint even credited me the $100 premium for my insurance because they failed to replace my phone before it had water damage. I took the phone in multiple times with no luck. Finally the Tech told me I had good news and bad news. Good news, you are getting a new phone. Bad news you have to pay $100 because you have water damage. The first Rep I talked to said we should have replaced the phone the first time. Credited me the money once they received my old phone.
I just returned my phone a few days ago with the s-off but i did have the original rom on the phone. They didnt say anything to me and when i received the new phone, the s was also off.......
Obviously the official rule is that they dont take them back S-off... Some people get lucky and either get a lazy rep or a rep that wants to be nice... It's a gamble

I returned mine too but the terms state that they have up to 2 billing cycles to charge us for any damages or whatnot... guess we'll see...
Their policies at sprint are now that they service rooted phones meaning with S-off they just RUU back up to the latest and it usually reflashes over ENG hboot and other things meaning that it's just gonna be s-on when you get it.
I rooted my phone and is s-off too and cant get it back to s-on

I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU (SOMEHOW) BRICK YOUR DEVICE. FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Also note that I have 0003 hardware, so there are no guarantees that this will work for you! That being out of the way, let me continue . . .
I used AndroidFlasher to flash this HBoot, as it was extremely easy (just renamed to HBOOT.img). Flashing through Fastboot (directly on the device) might also work, I guess, if you rename the file to PC36IMG, but I didn't try it that way.
I was able to do this successfully on Windows XP 32-bit (I always have issues getting anything to work on my Windows 7 machine), so I'm not sure how (or if) it'll work on Vista or 7 (or on 64-bit versions).
Note that if you're doing this with your device connected to your computer, USB Debugging MUST BE TURNED ON!!
If you want to return to stock, I first recommend flashing a stock ROM. I recommend the most recent Gingerbread update, which can be found in this post (RUU can be found here).
After successfully un-rooting your device by flashing the unrooted ROM from above, now we must re-lock NAND (set S-ON). Basically, you just flash the hboot.img from the attached zip file, and it will set your device HBOOT version to 6.17, and re-lock your NAND (S-ON). Then, you can re-flash the ROM from the above step, and it *should* overwrite the hex-edited HBOOT with the "official" version, and restore your device to stock.
Again, this worked for me, but if it doesn't work for you, don't go blaming me, and calling my method a sham.
Thanks to {ParanoiA} for posting the link to the thread where the hex-editing was mentioned, and thanks to thefredelement (from that thread) for posting a working method!
Maybe someone else can test my method and confirm it works for them & others, and then put a real guide together, for everyone else (like me) that needs to return their device for service after rooting with Revolutionary.
Thanks man! I rooted gingerbread 2.3.3 with revolutionary and try to unroot with unrevoked foreverson.zip but no luck because I didn't use there method to root. Hours and hours of research came accross your thread and all I can say thank you.
*****Very important to complete last step because if you don't you will have S-on but your HBOOT will be 6.1... For my last step I didn't flash using HBOOT I just downloaded RUU most current file because my phone came with 4.24.651.1 I just ran RUU booted back to white screen and HBOOT now shows HBOOT 2.1
Here you should use this method. It was origanally posted by captainthrowback and thanks to him now im back to s-on I was rooted and went back to stock but had s-off and I used this method to go back to s-on and it worked. My evo is on hardware v0004 and it worked fine too. Hope this method works for you to. Good Luck. Have any other questions just ask
