Help Please - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I have an original HTC Desire to be honest I think its a great mobile apart from one major issue which almost makes it un-usable its complete lack on onboard memory.
For this very reason I upgraded the mobiles ROM from a standard Vodafone UK OTA ROM to Oxygen-2.0-RC7 but I want to remove it and put something on that is 1 better 2 does OTA updates 3 works 4 Im not the sort of geek who can spend days trying to get something working so maybe going back to stock would be best.
I dont know what Vodafone UK are currently up to Andriod wise but think maybe I should go back to stock as I will again get OTA updates when the OS is updated something that I dont get at the moment.
Instead of using Vodafone stock ROM isnt there a generick google ROM with OTA I can use?
My only concern is that will I have to UN root the phone?
Will I loose all ability to transfer apps to the SD card?
I would like to get this done today so any replys would be very very much appreciated.
Cheers
Paul

Ok now im stuck its been so long since I originally rooted and applied my custom rom I can't remember how to put a new rom on!
I downloaded MIUI_Au-Desire-1.10.14_Signed.zip and placed it in the root of my SD card I then rebooted using the bootloader option I then whent to HBOOT and selected Fastboot then selected bootloader the next screen comes up with some errors then goes back to the previous screen...
Any ideas what im doing wrong?

You need to select recovery
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

As rootSU said, select Recovery and not Bootloader.
Before flashing ANY new rom it's always best to do a nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (you can restore to how it was when you made your backup).
Before you flash the rom you've chosen you should do the three wipes... In recovery "wipe data/factory reset", "wipe cache partition", "advanced/wipe dalvik cache".
Install your new rom... "install zip from sd card", "choose zip from sd card".

Thanks everyone ive updated the ROM now i use Titanium backup too.
Only thing is im not sure ill stick with 'MIUI_Au-Desire-1.10.14_Signed'
As im not sure it syns with facebook, twitter only gmail but ill keep looking

If you are set on getting frqent updates you'll want some aosp style rom. I use a sense base rom as I like sense - using a sense 3.0 rom, don't expect many updates as most of it just works

download facebook and twitter apps will sync fine
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

once you've download the apps add the accounts in the settings.
I like MIUI for the themeing and speed.
however if you like to keep sense, insert coin is really good, used that for a few months. Generally most roms you find on here will give regular updates much more than Vodafone or any carrier.
Personally I wouldn't go back to stock. If MIUI isn't for you, its not everyones choice, just browse the roms listed, try a few and see which you prefer.
On a side note I also find my backup root better than titanium backup, but once again its a personal choice.

The easy way would be to use ROM manager, open rom manager, do "backup of current rom" first to back up this working rom in case you want to revert after flashing a new rom, next go to "download Rom" and choose a new rom to download (there are only currently three roms offered in rom manager CyanogenMod,Virtuous and CyanogenMod Nightlies but I dont recommend Nightlies for noobs could have lots of bugs) it will ask if you want to install it, remember to select wipe data/cache any time you switch roms, and let it install the rom.
Other wise you will have to download a rom install it to the root of your sd card, open ROM manager, select boot into recovery, wipe data, wipe cache, select install zip from sd, select choose zip from sd, choose the rom zip you installed and apply, when done reboot and finish. Remeber in either case do a backup in rom manager first.
Thank you so much, do you happen to know where i can find a sense 2.2 rom??

Thats Virtuous, its what I use, use rom manager and download Virtuous 0.8.1 full rom and install.
Remember to wipe when changing roms, you don't need to wipe when applying updates.

Anytime you install a fresh rom, it starts fresh, you can use the app titanium backup to make a backup of your apps, and info and reinstall them onto diffrent roms. I would suggest to start reading the diffrent threads in this form and start learning how you use your new rooted phone and all the options you now have. Remember there are some roms and radios you dont want to intall on your phone, like the ones made for the desire z. Also might want to check out gfree for your phone. That will give you radio s-off and a true permroot, but you have to use adb to do this. It will also unlock the carrier and carrier id for the phone(so you can use other carrier sim cards). Here is another video on how to set up adb on your computer and the driver needed for your phone.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/
Remember dont do anything unless your sure you understand the directions. Keep reading and searching, this is what is gonna help you understand diffrent aspects of modifying your phone, another good resource is youtube, look up videos on how to do diffrent things, have fun.
Alright thanks

to browse all your backups you made with cwm go to the root of your sd card then cloworkmod folder then backups.
It wasn't finding them I guess it usually did n list them in recovery. But I want to the root and found them in clockwork I moved them to the SD and it found them no problem not sure why that happened but thanks for the help? I was panicing there for a min

Lightest/Most power effecient ROM?

Hi guys, whats the most lightest/power efficient stable rom which will give me good battery life on desire Z?
I have yet to root im on 2.3 gingerbread Offocial
Try them all for a few days and make your decision; what's "good" for one isn't necessarily "good" for another due to each user using their device differently. That being said, I've heard good things about G-Lite.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda app-developers app
Some that I can think of off the top of my head aimed more at battery/performance improvement:
G2 Slim : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324616
EliteMod CM7 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1246682
Though won't be much new changes to it since he's on EliteMod ICS now, which I love for the lightness/performance. Check the link in my signature if you want to try the ICS android version instead.
Virtuous G-Lite: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349030
Kind of the long running 'light' rom for a while.
Ok
Ok so I decided I want to get the
Virtuous G-Lite ROM
But I'm new to all this and I dont understand what steps I should take and even what half of these words mean when I tried googling it
Can you please put me on the right direction ?
and will the Virtuous G-Lite support my UK Desire Z phone ?
Okay search for glite in the development forum and download the rom. It should be around 120mb. Then copy it to your sdcard. Don't put it inside any folder nor should you extract the zip file. Now reboot your phone into recovery and wipe data, cache, dalvik. Then choose the option to install zip from sdcard. Select the zip file which you copied earlier. After flashing reboot your phone. This information is based on the presumption that you have successfully attained root and s-off on your device.
EDIT: As you haven't rooted your phone yet I suggest you follow the link "minus" below in my signature. There download the appropriate pdf.

Ok im in Glite now and I dont see a android notification bar
like without one, i cant do anything much so i need to go to a different rom do you know any?!
and I dont want to do a kernel thing because I dont understand it and i dont want to brick this phone
problem
ok the GLITE rom is giving me problems because it wouldn't log in to my primary gmail account for the market, so I used my other account and now i get an error message everytime I try to download something from the market.
Do you recommend any roms out there or should I try Elite rom, but once again I dont understand this kernel stuff its worrying and i want battery life atleast
edit: I dont like go launcher pro it doesnt have the android notification bar
Edit 2: 20 mins later, I cleared the cache, dalvik etc then I went to the launcherpro site and got the latest one and my notification bar has returned (or just come) how ever market still doesnt let me download anything
did you wipe everything before installing the rom? you may need to clear market data/cache

I would like to try it but I dont understand any of the elite kernel stuff
you flash a kernel the same way a rom, just flash rom then kernel. elitemod cm7 has both kernel and rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17219499
in the second post you will the download link
put it on root of sd card
boot into recovery and wipe everything (superwipe or fastboot wipe even better)
then flash zip
then reboot
sign in
reboot
your ready to go
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
oh
Ohhh so when I try to install the ROM the kernel will be installed along side it right?! that means its going to be easier than I thought.
what is this super wipe?
yes, many roms come packaged with a kernel, some don't, some require extra packages such as gapps to be flashed as well. the link I sent you just need to flash the rom, all is bundled.
superwipe came about in the g1 days, orginaly by osaka. it runs a script to wipe your phone clean to help insure a good flash of the next rom. there are many variations but I suggest finding one that formats system/cache/data to ext4 as well as wipe
search for superipe+ext4 in the threads
and fyi fastboot -w is an even cleaner wipe but needs to be done at a computer and learn how to use fastboot

GLITE Has this bug where it wont show the notification bar on first boot. One reboot will fix it. Also glite is bit old in terms of ease of use(customization) but it is very good in terms of battery. Elitemod is good too.

Yeah that bug happened to me, I tried to clear dalvik cache and then I updated the launcherpro then it randomly came. Is elitemod more easier and more customisable?what android version is it? Because on glite the battery life is brilliant but it feels like I'm sacrficing widgets (power control), the quick settings I had previously and the overal look is quite 'boring'
So with elite mod would I need to do any overclocking what so ever or anything else? And how can I make a back up of my current glite installion and revert back to it just incase elitemod doesn't work out for me
well your first step, just like when changing to any rom, is boot into recovery and make a backup. then you want to do a full wipe. then flash the next rom
nik3r has made a couple versions of elite mod, the one being suggested to you is based off of cm7 so its gingerbread, same as glite. it is slightly overclocked out of the box and has just about all the options avalible for a rom of its day, far more than glite. as for battery life, if you keep the oc/uv settings as they are you should get just as good battery life. I'm a moderate to heavy user and I do just fine with it

installing a custom rom STEPWISE (long as i got an idea from)

okay i want all the experienced people on this forum to help me with this thing and i hope a lot of people would get help with this post
i am using HTC DESIRE HD on it's stock firmware that is 2.3.5 and htc sense 3.0, to start flashing a custom rom (cyanogen 7.2 as an example) i have to follow the following steps (PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG)
1) i have to root my device using the AAHK (link: http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74)
2) then to back up my contacts i have to use SMSbackup (which is available on the android market), have a backup on the sdcard and copy it to ur device
3) now i have to download the custom rom (cyanogen 7.2) (link: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=ace)
4) now i have rooted my device and i will copy this rom in .zip format into my sdcard and go into the recovery mode by turning off the phone and then holding power and volume down button
5) i have to backup my existing rom by running a nandroid backup in the backup/restore (it's visible in the recovery mode)
6) once the back up is done i'll have to formate my sdcard and format the cache
7) then i have to select the "flash .zip file from sdcard" and i am done
please tell me if this process is alright or is there anything that i am missing
secondly is there any way through which i can save my apps?
last but not the least, if i wanna flash this kernal (http://blackice.omca.co.uk/download/...7-2WCR-TUN.zip) what do i have to do?
POINT ADDED: IF U ARE USING ANDROID 2.3.5 AND SENSE 3.0 THEN U HAVE TO DOWNGRADE TO THE PRIOR VERSION OF SENSE I.E 2.1, HOW DO I DOWNGRADE USING THE AAHK kit? PLEASE HIGHLIGHT THIS
The steps are correct. Except at step 6 you wipe all partions except SD card (called superwipe).
And your appdata will be automatically restored whenever you reinstall a app if you got your phone synced to your Google account.
And you flash the kernel as you flash a Rom but you only wipe dalvik and cache.

Titanium backup works great. It restores all non system apps and data, everything works great except (in my case Viber, it crashes and I have to re activate account after each flash).
I'd also have a question on flashing kernels. I have flashed 5-6 different ROMs but never a kernel (It is possible that these ROMS had other kernels but I'm not sure):
1) do I flash kernel BEFORE or PRIOR to new ROM? (or it doesn't matter)
2) if iI fo superwipe script from android revolution, can I then flash ROM and KERNEL one after another? (no need to wipe dalvik again)
D.

just a small note which is written on the AAHK manual and Thread but to make sure u notice it is that don't downgrade tooooooo much "I.E 2.1"
if u want to downgrade so u can root... u either let the AAHK do the downgrade for u or u do it your self either ways u musn't get lower than 2.3.3 so u wont get in kernal problems "which i once got, and god it was BAD".

Make sure to read the manual called 'effen manual' a few times for the hack kit.

Also, if you have your google account synced to your phone right now, it'll automatically restore contacts when you re-restore your Google account on the new ROM.
Sometimes android market/play store will automatically begin restoring apps by redownloading them (along with data) and some other things. If you prefer titanium, make sure that the play store isn't doing this by going to my apps. If your phone is running really laggy even after a minute or two after you set things up, chances are google play is redownloading all your old apps and chewing up your phone's hardware and data.

I Will Tell You My Steps >>How I Rooted My Device To Install Custom ROM<<
1) I had Downloaded free Sms BackUp And Apps BackUp from Play store.
2) Then I just Backup-ed all My Sms and Apps.
3) Then I went on my contact--> Manage Contacts --> Exported All My contacts from Google as well as from My Phone to my SD card.
4) For my safety purpose I then copied all my data from my memory card to my hard disk.
5) Then I used AAHK Tool:-
# What it did was just downgraded my Radio(Internet Required)
# Then Rooted my device-->Super CID-->BusyBox-->4EXT-->and so on...
DONE...

[Q] Google Now driving me nuts!

Hello peeps!
I would be after some advice to help me figure out what the hell is up with Google Now!
First of all here is my setup... Stock JB (3.14.707.24), Unlocked Bootloader, CWM Recovery. (Tried some custom ROMs but found them a little unstable on my device, although tried plenty of ROMs while on ICS without problems)
Now, Google Now seemed to work fine, until I restored a Nandroid Backup. That, as far as I'm aware, shouldn't have caused a problem as the phone seems to be running as was before I installed a custom ROM. I "long press Home", Google Now opens, I get the commute card but nothing else. I can ask it things, such as weather and other searches that usually return a spoken reply, but nothing! It just brings up regular search results.
I have tried... Clearing data, uninstalling updates, signing out then back in to Google, disabling then re-enabling location services, changing language (using More Locale 2 from Play Store) back and forth between UK and US... Nothing seems to work. I didn't swipe my weather card away, it just ceased to appear. I have searched the web to find out if there was a problem with Googles' servers, but there doesn't appear to be.
Short of reinstalling the official RUU, which I'm not convinced will do the trick, I'm at a total loss for ideas, so I put it to the floor! Can anyone suggest anything that I haven't tried!
Thanks so much in advance!
Did you wipe your system and cache before installing the nandroid backup??
Im not sure whether that will do the trick... But its worth a try.

I'm pretty sure I did... I always make a point of performing a full wipe before installing either a ROM or backup, but perhaps I'll have another go. I might even bite the bullet and try a complete RUU install as I have everything backed up via My Backup Pro anyway. Will see what I can do on my next day off work!
Thanks for the advice.

I'm on stock, just unlocked with CWM installed. No SU, no Busybox, no nothing. I doubt the recovery is causing the issue. I had tried ARHD 17.1 and Renovate 11 but both seemed to cause issues so I went back to stock via a Nandroid backup. May have another crack at a custom ROM, if that doesn't satisfy, I'll probably flash the RUU and see if that does the trick.
Fingers crossed! At least I haven't bricked the phone yet!
