I know this is a noob question, but what are the main advantages of rooting my phone? and what kinds of things can i do with a rooted phone?
I just upgraded to Gingerbread using the RUU , and i was thinking about using Gingerbreak

With root (+ENG & Radio S-OFF) you can do ALL (ROMs, Radio's, Kernels, RILs, Updates, Improve everything) that.
Without Root you can't do any of it.

WITH superuser permissions you can do a lot of things:
1-use apk´s that you can´t use without root access
2-flash roms
3-do s & eng - off for flash new basebands
4-flash new kernels and do overclock or underclock (for example,set up the speed of the processor)
5-change your screensplash, your boot animation, power off animation...
resumed: you have access to IMPROVE your device
you can do more things that i do not write...sure
Basically Root allows you to access all the underlying files, as administrator, on your phone, so what you can achieve is limited only by your skill not the software. IMHO the biggest reason for root is the ability to carry out a proper backup, after that the choice is yours.

Thanks, i needed to make sure it was what i thought it was.
After i run Gingerbreak i get the message
"not sure what happened here. Either the exploit failed or the reboot failed. Please reboot manually and see if you have SuperUser!"
Any suggestions?

I ran it again before i saw you post that, and it just worked straight from 2.3.
But now i've got 5 superuser icons, any suggestions how to fix that?

Maybe a daft answer but it's true: It's a bit of a dirty hack and will often leave all manner of strangeness floating about. Once you get around to wiping everything and putting the ROM you want on (a reboot will probably solve it) then all will be well.
Whilst you're going through the process expect more of this.
Best guess for your particular example is just the retries without rebooting.

Have to say I disagree about putting a sticky for that.
1. The site tries to limit the number of stickies.
2. Where would it go?
3. Who would look?
4. Who would find it?
5. The question has been asked and answered SOOOOO many times already that it would be easier to find one of those (search results are date ordered) than to find the sticky (trust me, I just tried).
(I've not asked the questions for answers by the way, I know the answers. Just there as a point.)

If I knew the url to the sticky, I'd post that as a reply early in the thread. The sticky could contain a moderated list of advantages/disadvantages to rooting a device.

Hi , i'm just bought a new HTC Desire HD to exchange for my old Iphone.
At first the performance and speed was good. but after I downloaded and used ADW instead of the stock theme,i also put for the Apps drawer at 4D so it look really good. Unfortunately, when i went through all my apps, it's really slow and lag (u can imaging as when u play an online game with slow INTERNET).
So I wanted to root it however i was going through all the threads in the HtC Desire hd forum and couldn't find any guide about rooting the 2.37.861.8.
Please let's me know if it can be rooted or not? and if it possible can u give me the link with detail how to root it and install Rom.

And my software is 2.37.861.8
And as i mentioned i'm new so i dont know does this method also applicable on my phone.

they tell you to put Q's in the Q&A forum.. then you do it, and you get **** for it. this isnt simple for everyone and there are different intricacies to all the firmware. if you dont want to answer a legit question, dont. but its amazing how smug this place is sometimes. give the guy a break, he just got the phone.

I wasn’t giving ****. I was simply stating that proper use of the search function (with multiple stickies in each sub forum, and agreements when you sign up stating to use it prior to posting) should be followed.
When I was green and first got my android device, I searched and searched and read anything and everything relevant before making any post. Too many people on these and other forums are lazy and don’t put in the time to really learn about their devices before beginning to mess with them. At least half of the people in here shouldn’t even be rooting their phones as they're technically inept from being able to recover from a blunder.
I've read so many posts which shouldn’t even exist if diligent information gathering and processing was actually executed, polluting the forums so much that finding a piece of useful information by simply browsing through all the bullarky, is next to impossible. I personally instead now strictly use the search function when looking for information that I may require.
Also, on page 3 or 4 of that thread, even though the op says "to 2.37.762.2 ONLY" there's been reports confirming it works with his version as well.
I've been experimenting on finding a way to downgrade 2.43.
Once receiving my phone back from repair after a true Brick (where only viable recovery is through jtaging) I found my device was updated to 2.43.661.1 which is part of the unrootable category at this time. So even after not being able to work on my rom for 3 weeks, due to the device being in repair, I still can’t work on my rom because I can’t push apk's and files into system area's to which root access is necessary.

First url points to a method that does NOT work.
psneuter does not work, therefore the goldcard downgrade will not work.
Second url is what I posted as the first response.

Before attempting to root, take the next few days to learn about things like the goldcard, RUU's, the Android SDK's, and basic linux commands (since android is simply a version of linux). Look at various tutorials on how to do things (but dont actually do them, just take note on similarities, and reocurring commands so if you were to do them you'd be comfortable executing them). Familiarize yourself with everything before experimenting.... makes recovering from a problem a lot easier than reading replies of people who think they know what they're talking about.
Things to note: Any RUU can be used once your device has radio S-off and use them rather than a PD98IMG.zip from your sd card. Your spash screen can only be changed if your device has ENG[ineering] S-off ('ENG' will take the place of 'SHIP' in the bootloader). Do not partition your sd card using CWM recovery; even though it supposedly has been fixed, it still may brick your phone (I personally dont believe you should have to partition an SD card ever!).
If the 2.37 method of the rooting doesnt take, you're in my boat with an unrootable device. You might as well see if you can update to the latest 2.5X build if your phone isnt carrier specific (using an ruu, and the device's data that cannot be synced with a google account or sense will be gone, but atleast you'll have the latest build)
If you do manage to Downgrade, dont use the post-downgrade rooting method, rather, follow my steps to root, radio s-off and eng s-off

2- as far as now, no, unless the new method posted today actually reverts the hboot
3- yes, although there might still be some apps that are on the rom that you do not want.

SO basically, if I CANT get s-off working, then even if I put cm7 or whatever other version i find, as soon as I reboot my phone, it will undo everything I did and ill be stuck with 2.2.1 again.
Have you tried the unlockr.com way to do it? Their page has a vid following you thru the process.. id post the link but im mobile at the moment

Last I looked a couple days ago there was no way working method on unlockr. heck last week the only method involved goldcards, and my firned who rooted his droid refused to touch it.

No. You don't need S-OFF to keep a new ROM. And you won't lose root with S-ON.
To my understanding, you only need S-OFF if you want to be able to manage some things without having to reboot your phone into recovery, or to get to some system files you otherwise can't with S-ON.
I have not seen the need for S-OFF for my personal use of my phone.
I would apreciate some help here as i got really confused.
I just unlocked my bootloader from HTCDev just to discover that I cannot install custom recovery, I cannot have root access and there are no recent custom ROMs to install (I need a stable one but recent, not older than mine - 2.3.5)
Could you help me by answering, what's the point of unlocking bootloader if I can't have the above?
I need to use sdcard for apps but for this, Root is required which is not able.
I need custom ROM (if there is one which is fine tuned with better performance, battery, and lighter)
I need to use apps that need root access, i.e titanium backup, etc. how can I use them without root?

First things first........as a senior member you should know well to post questions in the General section ONLY
Second..... if you have unlocked the bootloader correctly(i know you might have done that), root via Doomlord's easy root kit....
As far as the recovery is concerned...use Rom manager..... it's the easiest way
And the "aliveness" of the forum is quite well as compared to other fora...... the other mid-range phones may have more roms but a majority of them are PURE KITCHEN WORK while others have a little framework changes in CM7..... so there's no extra choice as compared to our phones.....
If you want good roms, mindhaxer/einstein.frat's(they both are the same) roms are good sense ones
Or you can try CM7 or CM9 if you are an AOSP fan

Anyway, I have to thank you again because you guided me to find the DooMLoRD package which wasn't mentioned anywhere else and now in a few minutes I managed to root the phone which I abandoned a few hours ago.

I agree with you I've been trying to figure out the rooting of this phone for the past two hours, I never bother posting for help as you always get scolded and people say duh use search which is really helpful.
I did I didn't find the answers. this forum is a bit of a mess tbh compared to the onex forum..

I went from complete noob to unlocking, installing cwm and then a custom rom by doing a lot of reading in xda and other forums. The info is all there!
You expect to spend 2hrs reading and know how to root, you need to spend more time learning, and the more time time you spend the less chance of messing it up.
I spent a lot more than 2hrs and all went fine and I've never had a problem.

Its not about getting an answer to your question. Its about keeping this section clutter free. Its the development section for a reason, and I'm mighty sure I'm not seeing a custom ROM in this thread.

Second, I see that you are ready and willing to give me lessons and increase your thanks meter between each other but before teaching me how much time of reading is necessary before you root, let me tell you that I was in xda long before you and I know very well both how much reading is necessary but I also know what the spirit of a community is. There are mods here who didn't get irritated as fast as you. From the speed of your answers I recognise that you must not be older than 25 which doesn't make you mature so @scott_doyland, your opinion is accepted but I was a noob on 2005 and I have performed the root procedure on more than 6-7 phones just by reading so I've done my homework plenty of times and you know what? You don't need 2 hours to root a phone. Actually I need about 30 minutes max including the reading I do on the instructions of each phone. Only on this forum I didn't find all the info gathered and before you jump answering on that, I'm not complaining about this but that's the reason I posted in order to get an answer and avoid the research of 200 pages. It's you guys that got inflamed about that. So take a lesson from a veteran who broke the rules. The idea of the community is to help each other even if the answer was given several times. Some people may not have the time to read or maybe they have read tons of info on other forums and they are visitors like me and can't spent the same amount of time in all forums for each phone they have to root. Ok bro. I have a S-ON, Unlocked Bootloader just like you. There are no way to root after u unlocked bootloader (because u need to update to lastest Hboot in order to UBL). I'd tried all tools i can find on xda and NONE of them can be use to root. There also don't have any clear guide for S-ON with UBL show how to install custom rom and get root.
But after few days digging up the forum, i'd managed to install custom rom + root. I share with you:
After your phone bootloader unlocked via HTCdev, your phone sure will have either HBOOT-1.08.0099 or HBOOT-1.09.0099. You'll need a ClockworkMod recovery image on your computer to install rom + root. And you'll need a working Android SDK with Fastboot to do get ClockworkMod working on ur S-ON phone.
OK let's say now you have fastboot folder alr, and know how to use it.
1. Download lastest clockwork mod .img here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
2. put the file .img just downloaded to the fastboot folder.
3. Turn off phone, then hold volume down + power ---> wait the menu searching for the zip file (of course we ignore this) then press Power again to go to fastboot menu.
4. connect phone to laptop via usb cable.
5. Open fastboot folder, right click choose open command windows here.
5a. If you are on HBOOT-1.08.0099:
Copy this and right click to the command windows, paste then enter, ur phone will automatic restart to CWM menu:

Ok, because many people are confused and PM me about what's next after unlock, here's the answer. Don't try the Super Tool, it doesn't work. At least for some people.

and use that script instead. It will flash Busybox and su to your phone. That's it. You have root acces then.
@Ghekua: If you have unlocked your bootloader then you have already installed the apropriate HBOOT. Just run that script from the post I attached above and you will have root access.
Edit: Oh, sorry, I read your post before edit and got different meaning. Anyway, thanks, I used the post above which is much faster and easier and I'm done.
Ghekua, if you install a custom rom it will already have root access, no need to root a custom rom.
I rooted my stock rom just by flashing cwm and then via cwm flashed a root.zip file from xda.

Flashing a new rom does not wipe cwm.
Cwm is always there unless you flash a different 'recovery'.

it's true for S-OFF bro. For S-On every time flash new rom need to fastboot to flash cwm again.
(i'd tried to install cwm by rom manager app, by flashable zip downloaded from clockworkmod website, no use)
I find downloading alquez's recovery and replacing the android_info file with the last RUU/update [of same], then flashing via hboot to be the simplest solution [since it works on marvel & marvelc].. I just keep that PG76IMG.zip on my sdcard and swapout android_info as needed [no need to sign or anything]. Of course then if you wanted latest-and-greatest [gsm] you'd root [Heritz guide works across board gsm & cdma], install your Rom Manager and reflash. But I like simple solution that works on both my wildfire s's
I do agree this is a general topic and if anyone has read my simplistic thread responses, I've stated above philosophy repeatedly in various threads.. and it seems to always work

How strange. I'm s-on and I never have to reflash CWM. I've only ever flashed it twice and the second time was just to upgrade to a later CWM.

First, consider I am a beginner so I do not know the keywords you use. (like brick-unbrick-cm10-flash-rom-debugg-recovery mode...)
I want to benefit from my phone.
1- By rooting it. Please tell me what is the latest/tested/safest/compatible method to do so.
2- By having IF possible the latest android version after the latest/official update that is the 4.0.4 for my phone.
I really want a good guide that won't give me almost any errors because I will not know how to deal with them and if putting the latest android version will do so, I won't do it. But my main concern is rooting it.
[Edit]I did some research since I still got no replies so I found there is the Bin4ry method. Is this the one for me?

I really want you to take a look at the XDA Mantra.. I couldn't put it better myself:
I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position.

When I first got here from the Sony Ericsson dev forums of my previous phone (w810i) I knew absolutely nothing about android, or any smart phones.. However, I've been doing web/gfx design & coding for many years and I know how to learn fast. That being said, I didn't feel it necessary to make one thread and before I knew it I had rooted, and flashed a custom recov/ROM within 24 hours. Now yes, I had my share of problems but I was actually quite well versed because of it..
The moral is that you'd be answering the same question asked by the next guy if you did the same thing. Trial and error is how humans learn.
First, if you are a beginner as you said, what is the reason you think you need root? Most users probably don't even need it.
Second, and im sure this is going to be your next thread; you have official ICS which means locked boot loader. In layman's terms, no roms can be flashed without unbricking.
Either way, there's literally 5 or 6 rooting guides.. Did you even try?
This community frowns on people who continuously ask the same questions especially when the answer is on the front page of that very forum... It gets very frustrating to see the same question asked day after day by people who aren't even willing to try. And the fact that you've already asked once and now felt it necessary to make a whole new thread to do it again tells me rooting and modding isn't for you.
There's literally no negative result from a failed root attempt.. However, succeeding will void your warranty, and if you don't know how to find resources on your own you'll probably end up with a bricked phone (won't boot and/or worse... )
Questions are fine, not bothering to do any research or trial/error is not.

To answer your question better: typically the latest guide with the most recent replies is the one people are using. Just open the thread and read the last few pages to see if anyone has linked a newer guide or better method.
Afterward I'm assuming you'll want to try jb at some time which will mean you'll have to unbrick. There's a newer unbrick guide that is specifically designed to help with people who've flashed the official ICS and licked their bootloader. I suggest that one. Too hard to link on the fly so you'll have to do some recon

I want to learn but I find it hard to find the resources. Give me a good source of 10 pages and I am ready to read it to learn.
For example now, I saw different methods one of them sparkyroot one of them the bin4ry method and others but I don't know with which one should I proceed with. I don't know which one is compatible with my phone. I don't know if any user having my phone is facing problems after rooting since every popular thread have a minimum of 200 pages.
I posted this thread because I am scared of "trying" like you said and making an error while rooting and having my phone bricked and it is not a simple error I will get but a major one since I am modifying the root of my phone so I do care if my phone will face any error. I don't want to pay for a new phone or searching for someone to repair it.
I am still 16 years old, trying to learn, but it is so hard for me to find the tools on Android, none of my friends know anything about these stuffs and there are no tech guys in my place if I have questions. In two years I will be in university studying in CCE and this is to show you I like the programming stuffs but I need help starting. I do like exploring and learning like I do on my laptop and on my Ipad but the guides here are harder to find. When I first wanted to jailbreak my Ipad, I 've read a lot of step by step guides and found redmondpie.com which gives answers and guides to almost everything but I don't know where to start for Android since there are tons of models, forums, threads, methods etc.
As I said in the title, I want to make the max out of my phone so I want to be able to have the latest updates since the last one is ICS, getting rid of the useless apps, managing the startup apps, adding the coolest and most useful tweaks like I try to do on my jailbroken Ipad. To sum up, doing EVERYTHING none of the people around me know how to do and being able to have kind of a unique phone full of nice tweaks.

I don't know which ROMs are compatible with my device and my main problem is : I can't find answers for MY device since there are tons of guides and devices on Android unlike on IOS where you find the same guides, problems and solutions (I am not saying IOS is better in fact I like Android for its open OS based on Linux if I read well).
So I came here searching for not only the answers but the latest answers in which errors are fixed and which will not create problems with my device.

Not sure exactly what you mean.. If you searched you'd have found on the very first page of this very sub-forum:

In post # 4 you can see that the method linked worked.. and this was posted this month.. Not sure why you have so much trouble finding this info.. It's right here, and if you notice; if that fellow had bothered to search, he'd have found the same info that the first response provided. It's literally all right here. XDA is usually the one-stop-shop for all required info and resources, so long as you're willing to look.
Nevertheless, I've tried both of these methods, and both worked first try for me. However, you usually only have to do this once, and Ive done it both on GB when I first got it, and then again on ics 4.0.4 when I updated like a moron without reading... This was a great example of a "lesson learned" for me.. and trust me, I am better for it.
I don't understand what you're "scared" of... Basically, as long as you follow the guides properly you'll never have a problem..
However, if you are flashing custom ports, or beta release roms that are known to be unstable (it will always say); then your worst "fear" would be having to follow the Unbrick Guide, which shouldn't take more than 30-45 mins tops after the first run-through in which you obtain all the required files. Unless you do something stupid -- usually caused by not following/reading guides properly.. again, most of the time human-error is the only culprit of bricks -- your phone will never be "broken beyond repair."
Warnings are typically clearly stated -- I can't stress this enough: READ READ READ (replies, comments, reports, bugs.. all listed in the same thread as the guide itself).
So I came here searching for not only the answers but the latest answers in which errors are fixed and which will not create problems with my device.

Again, "bugs" and "issues" usually means random reboots, or force closing of apps... Nothing serious. Flashing CM nightly (trusted dev) is very safe IMO.. Flashing custom ports is probably the most risky. but again, nothing an unbrick cant fix in 45 mins or so.

It was more a general look at the rules. Not specifically saying you're like that, I just think he worded it well so I thought I'd share.
Anyways, from my experience as long as you have the drivers properly installed and don't let your antivirus delete the zergrush or other exploit file (because it will), superoneclick has always worked first try for me. However some people report having to try multiple times so just keep trying.
As I said, all rooting guides use pretty much the same exact tools, just worded differently or a different app that does the same thing.

Yes, the official ICS update locks the bootloader so you have to follow the same guide you would if you had "bricked" your phone.
Flashing any ROMs or doing pretty much any modding requires a full wipe. Simply back up your data (I suggest helium).
After you flash a custom recovery (CWM), you can do what's known as a Nandroid backup, which (basically) backs up every last detail of your current running ROM including settings for all installed apps, games, etc. as well as settings for the OS itself, wifi info, etc. -- Let me put it this way, if you restore a nandroid backup, it's as if you never wiped/flashed anything else. This is the best benefit of flashing a custom recov. (IMO) besides flashing roms of course.
Rooting is very non-intrusive.. Unless you have apps that require root, you wouldn't even notice. There's no risk of errors or bricked via root itself, however.. Root means "admin" or "full" access. You will have access to things that are normally hidden/protected from accidental changes.. Similar to the control panel in windows.
As with any computer, If you go deleting things or editing important options like a moron after obtaining root then yes, you will have problems. That's the whole point of why phones don't come with root access.. People who aren't smart enough to figure it out most likely aren't smart enough to handle it.. (Ie. General public).

That's the point.. Read the mantra more closely. The whole point is to try.. You learn by trying.. If you're afraid to get a little dirty sometimes, then this stuff probably isn't for you.
One last tip: Read guides fully before starting and make sure all files are still available/alive. This ensures you don't get stuck half way through. You'll thank me later.

Note: I highly recommend.. Clockworkmod Recovery is extremely useful, and nothing beats CM10.1 RC2 + Wind Kernel 2.01 as far as battery life is concerned, and the features JB offers over ICS are simply amazing.. (as long as bluetooth isn't a deal-breaker for you -- this should be fixed soon though.. we're getting very close.)
