I was wondering is there a specific radio to flash or a "[MOD]" topic to get the 4G Icon back on the G2? I'm just curious because I'm about to flash a Sense ROM and wanted to know
I am guessing that you are not referring to a speed issue, but rather that you would like to have the 4g icon pop up instead of the h icon.
This is not influenced by the radio you use, since the desire z (and g2 i'm guessing) actually only support hdspa instead of "real" 4g, while hdspa is faster, it's not the same.
As far as the 4g icon goes it's rom specific, just check the op to see if there's any mentioning of it or if there's possibly an add-on that you can flash. If you can't find it, I believe that with sufficient knowledge (which I'm lacking) you can mod this yourself using UOT.

I was kind of referring to both, Because before I downgraded, rooted, I was using Stock 2.3.4 and it had 4G Icon and I had come from a 3G phone and I noticed that it was quite faster than the 3G MyTouch Slide that I had.
Yea, I believe this is what many users refer to as "faux"G, while it might say 4g, it actually only supports hdspa, which I'd say isn't that much of a bummer since hdspa allows for download speeds up to 7.2 mbit, most likely the mytouch 3g sported umts, so you would definitely notice an increase in speed when switching to the g2.
You simply won't notice real differences in speed when your rom calls it either 4g or H

I know an XDA member that just created a flashable zip for the 4G/2G icons for use with the ROM in my signature... the ROM is a CM7 mod and it's amazing, but if you weren't interested in the ROM perhaps sino8r could help you out with the icons... ah, I see now, the icons are for use with the new stable CM7 and the nightlies...

Is it possible to use the kernel from the recent HTC Froyo OTA, with maybe some other pieces added, on top of CM6 to get 4G/FM Radio/HDMI working?
If so, what parts do I need to overwrite? Anyone want to make an update.zip to apply to do it?

no... and cyanogen has explicitly stated that the new update won't contribute anything to cm6. cm6's 4g will most likely use clear's open wimax implementation. hdmi is also in the works, way before htc released their 2.2 update. i'd say, be patient. the final cm6 build will be epic, to say the least. the current nightly builds are on par with all of the current build (except for 4g and hdmi) in terms of smoothness and speed.
just my 2 cents.

I wasn't saying cyanogen could or should use parts of HTC proprietary kernel. Cyanogen should stay true to open source. My question is can i make kind of a hybrid rom with HTC's kernel on top of cyanogen to get 4G/FM Radio/HDMI back?
It's not a huge deal to get those things, i don't have 4G here, i don't care much about the FM radio, I mite use HDMI once in a while but can live without it. Its just more of a "could i" kind of question.
Thanks

Should I root my mytouch slide to CM7 the gingerbread one or CM6 the froyo one. I'm not really updated on whats in the roms but I primarily need a proxy for wifi and a radio. Which one should I get.
Not sure what you mean by you need a radio. Do you mean you want to flash the newest radio firmware or are you looking for a FM radio?
CM7 is still only in nightlies (no "stable" versions have been posted yet). I'm currently using nightly 32 and have run into zero issues with it, with the exception of WiFi (my phone is afflicted with the wifi problem and only properly works with the stock drivers). It seems that most people don't have the wifi issues, though, so you may well be fine. CM7 has a few features that CM6 doesn't, such as wifi calling support.
CM6 (6.1.1) is stable and works well. It also has the same wifi issues for me, but that is fixable in this rom. There's a thread from Hebrewtoyou in the dev section that outlines how to make it work if this is an issue on your phone.
I've never used proxy settings in any of the roms, so I can't tell you anything about that.
yeah i have no idea what he means by radio...if you have root,i recommend you try one rom first and see if it has the features that you want...if it does, stick to that one or try the other one.
If you have to ask which is better for you, I would say use cm6, just wait for cm7 to come out with a release candidate or stable release before trying it, some of the nightlies are pretty buggy

You're buggy
Start with cm6..this will get you on a stable rom and you can always upgrade to cm7...

I realize this whole topic is a little bit dated now but just in case you havent yet chosen a rom, or youre in the market for a new one, CM7 RC2 is out now and is pretty decent. The only problems I am having as of now is an issue with Gmail actually sending my emails and not having GPS. Im trying to find answers for both of those problems now. Good luck!
If these is a good thread that truly answer my question please point me in that direction, I must have missed it.
When it comes to the Evo 4g specifically, what are some of the disadvantages of going with an AOSP rom, and what are the reasons for them? (Not CM7 specifically, AOSP in general)
Such as, it sounds like GPS and the compass generally do not work as well in AOSP builds as in Sense. -> is it true and is it just due to not being able to use HTC drivers/code?
3g speeds are slower -> Same as gps?
Thank you!
Im on CM7, and no faults. My 4G I can get 6mb down...3G is fine. My GPS is SPOT on while indoors even, never have had to use a fix. AOSP in general is smaller in size, so it can run faster. The only downside is you don't get sense apps and widgets. Though while on AOSP you have to flash a sense rom to update PRL, but that takes 5 minutes.
Some users have different experiences though. Its worth a try.
In my experience, AOSP ROMs have better battery life without sacrificing performance or neutering push notifications. Also AOSP is going to be your earliest opportunity to play with the latest Android builds.
Maybe I am doing something wrong but when I'm on cm7 my gps does not work very well at all. I would use AOSP but I personally have not found one that my gps is reliable on.

Did you try the fix on a sense rom? Also, you can try opening maps first, then navigation; that works for some users.
A few weeks ago, I bought a used EVO off ebay and it came in good condition but had the 2.3.3 ota update and was locked out till Revolutionary came along and allowed me to s-off and get SU access. This was all done with the intention of trying a few other custom roms with Sense 2.x, 3.x and AOSP. After having tried, played with used and read about various roms on XDA for the EVO, are there ANY roms that work as well or better then the stock rom????
To me is seems more like what are u willing to deal with or live without ranging from HDMI, GPS, 4G, Camera issues. I've used 2 roms that can even keep a folder I created on my main screen with a few apps in that folder from removing those apps when I reboot or shut down my phone. Is there and AOSP rom that has more then 5 home screens, wereas the sense roms have 7.
I love the newer mail app that will display all your accts on 1 screen, I have yet to find any ROM with sense 3.0 that can or will display all the google calendars that I have access to view. The carosel of the home screens is the best part of the custom ROMS.
While I truely do appreciate the awesome and very hard work that the developers do to make theses roms to add functionality to our EVO's why would you put something our that isn't ready for daily use??
Are their any Custom ROMs that have ALL the pieces working???
I get where you're coming from, because i cant keep a ROM knowing that something isnt working properly, plus i dont like getting all fancy with the ROMs i like em simple and the sense feel.
Check out the Sprint Lovers ROM with a custom karnel, that should suit you.

I'm Running Calkulin's EViO 3 v1.0 ROM with Golden Monkey 1.1 Kernel, and V6 SuperCharger script.
I love the nice simple design of the ROM, and EVERYTHING from GPS, 4G, Camera, WIFI work. Not sure if HDMI is working but im sure it does.. im able to keep apps in a folder after a restart too. Not sure about the email app and google calenders thing.
Golden Monkey and Supercharger are just a plus for speed.

Try miui. It is amazing. Only thing that doesn't work is 4g. That's because it's originally made by the Chinese.

Well see thats kinda what I'm getting at, something that doesn't work. Now if I didn't live in an area that didn't have 4G coverage, I might consider MIUI, but i do live in a 4G area. TY for the reply, much appreciated.

I don't have 4g where I live so that why its not a problem for me. I would probably use it even if I did. I barely use data anyway cuz I have wifi at home I just use that.

You know, Wi-Fi isn't necessarily faster than 4g. I'm not trying to be a troll though, just explaining it so you don't have the wrong impression.
Which Android version takes up least space but still give 4g, I'm on froyo and it gives me an H, never seen H before lol and an E when I'm using 2g/edge. What is H?
What do you consider is the best overall version of android to be run on the G2? Doubt ICS will run well since I put it on my G1 and it was very slow and like you needed a "tap"/stylist screen rather than touchscreen.
Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb roms seem to be the best since they all have flash and HTML5 capabilities.
As for space, on these stock Gingerbread/Froyo there are a plethora of apps that I was never going to use on the phone pre installed, is there a way to uninstall/remove the ones I don't want to free up space? If not, then I would definitely want a rom that takes up little space.
Thanks in advance everyone.
Edit: All the roms I looked at say nothing about radios, for the G1 this was important, didn't know what it's for but followed what they said. Why is there nothing about radio version you need to be on and stuff?
Edit: Also I don't think I want Sense, doesn't look that great.
H = HSDPA = "4G" indicator. It is a feature of G2 GB update.
ICS actually runs well, quite faster than stock GB in my opinion, and I don't see the need to a stylus either.
If what you need is a long battery life, lots of space, good speed then a slim ROM where the developer strip every single unnecessary thing then something like this may meet you need
G2 Slim v1.6 -- OTA 2.16.531.5 NO BLOAT (this includes RADIO OTA 2.16.531.5 if you wonder what is that)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324616
Radio wise: You do not need to worry about it. ROM usually include a safe, latest OTA radio. If you really want to, you may try different RADIO yourself.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809
Removing unnecessary apps: Usually developer would remove bloatware already.
If you want to remove more, you can consider something like
The ROM tool box lite

Great, I am trying out two roms coming from Xboarder 2.4, which only gives me 3g. Is there a way to get 4g/H on roms that disable/remove/don't have it?
The roms I am trying are:

Couldn't install HyperNoSense ICS 1.5, will try another time.
HyperNoSense is a Sensation ROM. You have an HTC Vision. They're not interchangeable.
If I recall, the stock ROMs were very liberal in their display of "H" or "4G". Moving to custom ROMs I always saw a lot of pinging back and forth between 3G and HSPA+, but its something that never really bothered me as speed tests still showed the same as when I was stock. I'd just run some tests and make sure you are getting good speeds where you are and not nitpick about what data connection the ROM says you have.
That being said, favorite ROMs have been GB based Mexdroid AIO (the older version, not one of the newer) and Andromadus ICS Beta. I never ran many sense ROMs, but Revolution HD ran very smooth when I tested it, and T4Z's Sense 4.0 was nice when testing (T4Z has some good ports all around).
