Evo wont connect to secured wireless router - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

No matter what security method i use i cannot connect. It connects right away with no security. This started after I flashed CM 7.1. its a linksys wrt54g

have you tried making your EVO 4G forget unsecured networks first? or are there a network mangement software running background?

but it does connect, just not when secured, that makes me think its not a rom problem, but then again I dont know. anything is possible with electronics

Go to Linksys website and update firmware in router

If other devices can connect except for your Evo with encryption enabled, then it's not your router. I'm on CM7.1 (not RC1) and it works with my wifi and I have a wrt54gs. If you flashed a kernel, then I would try another one. Worst case, download the ROM again and setup your wireless and verify that it works.

I had a similar issue the last time I changed from CM-7 to EVOLvedROM...I could not manually connect to my secured router. I would actually have to log into the router and run WPS "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" via PBC "Push Button Configuration". During the PBC was the only time the phone would connect to the router. I tried everything I could think of. I finally reflashed the rom and that seemed to do the trick.

I had this problem today. I'm was running a Mik rom and it wasn't connecting even though I had put the correct key. I also flashed another rom and it didn't connect. The only thing that really worked for me was waiting.

Do you have other secured routers you could try to connect to? If so, does it connect to those properly or no?

Thanks for the help everyone. I changed the password and it connected right away. I dont know why though because i checked several times to make sure my passwords matched.

PPTP vpn won't connect

I can't seem to connect to my work's pptp vpn with my E4GT. It says "Connecting..." then "Unsuccessful".
If it matters, I'm on Calkulin's_E4GT_2_ROM_v1.2.
Using my PC I can connect to it, just not from my phone. Any suggestions?

I've never had pptp problems with android. l2tp seems to have only been fixed recently for me with gb roms (could be my vpn servers were at fault.)
I'm having the same exact issue OP. Just signed up for a VPN service, I'm able to config my Windows machine to use the connection just fine.. On my phone I'm getting "Connecting..." then "Unsuccessful" when I try to connect. I'm also running Caulk's ROM.. same version.
I've had no luck connecting to my ddwrt over pptp since getting this phone. My crappy HTC hero used to work but not this phone. From what I could find online it has to due with the dynamic IP that sprint is given my epic. I've read that if you get a static IP from sprint that it somehow doesn't have a firewall blocking these connections, however it is not free. I have not tried this yet.

I have a lg optimus one and depending on my rom depends on if my pptp vpn connects. I was going nuts trying to troubleshoot it and then i set it up on my computer to test there and was able to connect without an issue.
If i use CM 9.2.2 (ics rom) i can connect without a problem.
if i use a custom rom based on 9.2 the vpn does not connect. whats funny is they are both ICS rom's.

Sprint hardware update = no wifi tether?

I was having signal go in and out at work all day yesterday, and it turns out Sprint was replacing a bunch of hardware in my area (Atlanta). Now, I cannot get wifi tether to work. My computer will connect, but it will not get internet. Wired tether works fine. I've tried the Sprint Hotspot in Calkulin's 3.0, and also the Hotspot in the ICS Goodness. I've also tried Open Garden, Wifi Tether for Root, and Fox__* (I can't remember the exact name).
It will not connect. Tried different roms, 3g/4g, resetting network ##72382# or whatever that code is, did a complete reset, tried different roms, etc.
The only thing I can conclude is that whatever Sprint updated here locally fixed this loophole for the hacked hotspot. Atlanta is an "A" market, and typically one of the first to get updated, so if this is the case, maybe nobody else is seeing it
Any ideas on what else I can try?? I need this wifi tether desperately.
have you tried foxfi?

I am not a dev, nor do I know a lot about anything. I seriously doubt changing tower hardware would "fix" a software workaround in a phone for internet sharing. I don't have an answer as to why or why not, but it sounds highly unlikely. I am speculating the two are not related.

Had this same problem about a year or so ago. Download "Root Checker" from Google Play. I forgot why but sometimes Root will be lost but your phone will say you are rooted. I don't remember the details. All you have to do is Root again if this is the case.
Try going into superuser app and updating the su binary, when mine get outdated sometimes wifi tether quits working but other root apps will still work.

Yes, no go on that one as well. No matter the program, I get the issue with my computer "unable to connect" on Windows 7, and also limited/no connectivity with Windows XP..
How can I generate a log to find out what's going on? I'm starting to get the feeling it has something to do w/ wifi driver, although wifi works fine, 4g works fine, 3g works, and wired tether works fine, I cannot get wireless tether to work with 3g or 4g..
Tried Sprint Hotspot, Wireless Tether (for root), Open Garden, Foxfi..

I agree, however, I'm assuming there's also an upgrade in software to go along with hardware changes, and they may have rolled something out at the same time. It could be a coincidence, but I've never had a problem before.

Ok, this is interesting. Do you all know if Wifi tether has always been ad hoc? I thought it used to show up as an AP in Windows.
Also, once I updated SU, my XP would connect to Wifi Tether only, but then tried the Win 7 and gave me the same "unable to connect" box. Now, neither of them work again.
Ideas? How to log, etc?
Do you all know now LAN settings would affect connectivity?
It seems Wired Tether uses 172.20.xx.xxx/30 while I believe the others were using 192.168.2.0 or 192.168.1.1, etc.
I'm in the Atlanta area (North West - Kennesaw/Acworth). I use WiFi Tether (the open source app not the built in), just tested it, I was able to connect and use the internet from my Nexus 7.

Foxfi is broken on the SE4GT since the ICS update.
Installation instructions (for Sprint Users):
1. Make sure "Unknown Sources" is checked in phone Settings (under Applications or Developer).
2. Tap on the following links to download the apk file for FoxFi.
3. From phone notifications select the downloaded file. This will install FoxFi.
FoxFi latest version: 1.91.3
*Support for the new Galaxy S3 and the new ICS update for Epic Touch are being worked on. Should be compatible soon in a future update.

As far as I know, the built in sprint hotspot is the only way to get infrastructure mode. All others are adhoc. If there is a setting for it for a profile, I think I remember reading somewhere to pick the galaxy nexus profile.
I just tried Wifi Tether in netd mode and it worked as Infrastructure. Client was Win7 x64.
Good to know too that I have a backup internet source if the main goes out. Not great but better than nothing.

Home WiFi not working on E4GT

I obviously have the Sprint S2, and I continue to have issues staying connected to my home wifi. I have no problems connecting to other wifi networks. It will connect, then after a few minutes, it disconnects, even though it shows I'm still connected in my notification bar. I've searched high and low. It seems many other people are having the same issue, but no one seems to have a fix. Anyone here know of a solution? Thanks in advance.

So I finally figured out what the issue was. A lot of mobile devices have a hard time connecting to highly secured networks such as wpa2. If you have a wpa, or wpa2 protected router, you can only use numbered passwords. Up to 10 characters. I tried this, and it's the only solution I found. If that still doesn't work, change your wpa2 security to wpa, with a numbered password only.

if you have to use numbers and only 10 chars, it sounds like a router config issue. sounds like you have WEP on rather than WPAx
Wifi busted
I actually have the same issue. Wifi worked flawlessly on gb. On ics every time phone goes to sleep it drops, notification says connected. Toggle wifi off and back on works, phone sleep back off. Tried wifi never, only when plugged in. Switched to 2.4 ghz only tried 5 ghz , too. Linksys ea4500 wpa2/aes(setting) brand new. None of the numerous other devices in the house have any issues. Speeds seem awesome.
Tried factory reset nothing works. Even got sprint to get me a new phone, still no solution other than going back to el29. Currently, running fi03 stock rooted. Scared to try latest fi25. Any other suggestions would be great.

still sounds like a router compatibility issue. See if it happens on a different wifi.
The only way i can successfully stay connected is if there is no security or wep is used. Same router nothing had changed. Again worked flawlessly with EL29 update comes to FF18 and it no longer works. Sprint has said it is a known issue with ics on samsung and htc but no fix. Don't want to give up my security just to use wifi. If i roll back to gb everything works again without changing anything in the router. So i don't believe that is it. Plus, i know all about router settings not a noob. I beleive it to be something in the phone update.

My wife runs fully stock newest release and its fine. Try a different router. routers can have compatibility issues with devices. Also you say "its a known issue" but can you give a source?
I'm not saying its router settings. I'm saying it can be a compatibility issue between router and phone chipset.

I guess i should've mentioned there are 2 of the same phone in the house. Wifi works fine on the other device. Source? As in sprint tech support told me over the phone it was a known issue with samsung and htc devices, not all are affected. This is why sprint decided to replace my old non working phone for the new one.
Not sure why of it were truly a setting inside the router why would one work but not the other? Seems highly improbable to me, just saying. I do appreciate the feedback though.

So two of the same phones. One connects and one doesn't. Interesting. About the tech, seems a pretty wide declaration of an issue. samsung and htc phones. lol. There are a ton of those and its a 'known issue'. If it were a known issue, they would have it tied to a specific phone and wouldn't say 'well err um some phones work and some dont'. lol. Anyway, I don't usually trust those techs.
Back to the issue. If one works and one doesn't... Then it sounds software or still compatibility type issue.
Have you tried these things? If it were me, this what i'd try....
1) I'd reflash your phone's ROM fresh and try again. Full wipe. It's possible the update boinked your wpa_supplicant settings.
2) DHCP: stick a static IP on your android and see what happens. (dont confuse this with a static dhcp lease) DHCP does some interesting things on android phones as far as wakelocks and such.
3) In the router, turn off all the bell and whistle crap... Some of these routers have things like 'afterburner' and things like that. It can cause issues at times. Keep track of what you turn off and obviously if it don't work, turn it back on again.
EDIT:
This is interesting as well. Your not the only one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847889&page=4
Try the things I posted but ultimately, you may need to just flash a different ROM version... Doesn't mean you need to go all the way back to EL26. At least you know its not only you...
So I initially called Centurylink, and they told me to change security settings. I did this, and it worked for a short period, but then dropped again. I couldn't figure out why this kept happening, and it had become quite frustrating. Then I realized that I had created a new network with a personalized name and password. My laptops connect fine to that network, but my phone won't, so I connected to the initial network created by Centurylink, and have had no issues. So I can suggest trying that as well. Hope that helps

Same issue for me too, since moving from gb. Running S710.10 S.FI27
I see this on both of the WIFI networks I connect with regularly. Home is worse. Every other device at home, including phones, PCs, TVs, tablets: mine and guests, can connect and stay connected just fine. My Epic 4g with ICS can't stay connected to save it's life.

different rom? mine never ever disconnects running cm10.
Set up both home networks using WPA/WPA2-PSK and no issues. Did have issues at work with WEP so perhaps that's the offending solution? If so try TKIP instead.

Gone in FI25/FI27 - looks like it won't be re-appearing until JB, at least if FI10 was accurate in this respect.

WiFi Issue [CM11]

I'm having issues connecting to WiFi on CM11. Most people say they fixed it by changing their router settings from WPA to WPA2 and I use WPA2 so I'd assume that it would work. Having no WiFi is causing me absurd Sprint bills each other and it's frustrating. Any ideas?

It's not my router so I don't have permissions to do that
I was having issues with WiFi while streaming Netflix, it would buffer every 3 minutes. It only happened when I flashed CM11 on my phone. I finally just tried a new Kernel. I used AOSP Bubba from our link here and it fixed it right up. Use a Kernel cleaning script first and then flash that and see if it fixes your issues like it did mine.

[Q] wifi calling not working

I've had my Note 3 (SM-N900T) for a few months. Wifi calling worked up until a few weeks ago. I don't know what I could have done to break it, but it's busted. The phone is connecting to wifi (the internet works), but the wifi calling icon never appears, even if the setting is changed to only use wifi calling.
I've tried forgetting/reconnecting to wifi, worked with T-Mobile support, they verified all the settings on their end, and eventually gave me a new sim. They tried to blame my router (which hasn't changed in the last few weeks). I went to a friend's house and wifi connected fine, but no wifi calling. I went to a T-Mobile store and their wifi didn't work. Probably not the router...
My phone is rooted with the DeLaVega root (knox not set) with minimal changes. The T-Mobile store blamed this issue on the root, of course. This was working for quite a while after the root.
Before I do a factory reset, is there anything I'm missing?
Thanks!
Nope note 3 wifi calling sucks
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Do you think it's likely that even after the factory reset, this will eventually happen again? Should I just get used to the fact that I don't get wifi calling? That might send me crawling back to AT&T.
I had WiFi calling issues on Note3, updated router firmware, works like a champ since then (close to 2 months). Since my old GS3 worked well before router update, that was little tricky to figure out.

I looked up the model of the router, found the manufacturer, and downloaded the firmware file. Then logged into it and found the advanced features and updated the firmware. This process is slightly different for every router, but that's the gist of it.
It shouldn't impact the router settings. The only impact will be the brief downtime as the router updates and resets.

Sadly, I did a factory reset and replaced my router, neither of which were the root cause.
