If someone makes a game like god of war or street fighter 4 then sure it will. The hardware is quite capable of running some pretty intense games they just have to be made.
Actually it probably won't have god of war but potentially streetfighter. Not for technical reasons but there won't be any "M" rated games in the store. Microsoft is going with a PG13 strategy. It was mentioned that this is even a problem for MS as there is some wanting to bring Halo to the platform.
So much for the gaming platform. Not that I personally care much, but that's a strange attitude to a phone with that XBox logo on the homescreen.
PG13? Sounds quite dumb because exceptional majority of WP7 phone owners will be grown-ups.
Yea, I'm thinking that they may open it up more once they can get parental controls in a "future release" but for now it's the more family friendly variety.
This makes sense. (Market for under-18s) > (Subset of gamers that need >PG13 content). But it will be good when the platform gets more security features / parental controls.

At the prices that Microsoft will charge, what parent will give thier child a windows phone7? If thier marketplace is PG-13 then they wont release the game that Microsoft has been showing Harvest . I think this is a way so that Microsoft can approve thier own developers but not indepent developers. Microsoft already has a built in excuse now. What a shame!!

Remember, MS is separating the game marketplace from the app marketplace, so the same rules may not apply to the game store. Besides, there won't be a God of War game on WP7 anyway since it's a Sony exclusive.

Halo was specifically mentioned as being a "problem" since MS is enforcing a PG-13 policy. I'm sure there's public sources but this was from a talk I heard in person at TechEd.
Sadly this project is no more. We were a dev team of 3 people who had about 3 months into Appaloosa. However, the slow build of the WP7 platform and some reported low sales numbers in the App Marketplace made it hard to justify the additional time needed to bring this title to market.
Was very hard to let go of so much work and creative energy.
Here is a walk thru of an alpha build. It definately shows what that phone is capable of pushing (forum is perventing the url, sorry first post).

The WP7 platform has had a faster uptake than both iOS and Android when they were first launched. As for marketplace sales, I don't know what numbers you have seen, but games is what generally sells well, especially ones with great graphics as they are not only used as a game but also as a "look at what my phone can do" kinda thing amongst the owners friends.
From the video, and with no background information available, it doesn't look like a game for me, but if it was performing well and priced correctly I would still probably pick it up.
Anyway, that's my $0.02.

I don't know exactly what numbers you are referring to, but I guess you mean LG's statement. Isn't LG maybe just part of the picture? There are Samsung and HTC that are currently the main sellers of WP7. (for the shares, look here: http://wmpoweruser.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/wp7oem.png)
Although I can't exactly be sure why LG is doing that bad (it might have to do something with the phone they offer...) - that's up for speculation.
I'd like to add that T-Mobile Germany just stated that they are ahead of their plans regarding WP7 sales (source: http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/201...-windows-phone-7-sales-are-ahead-of-schedule/ along with several other sites)
Personally, I don't get the impression that WP7 is doing badly.

Judging from what is shown in the trailer, I'd say it's a great thing you did so far.
And I'd like to buy a version as soon as it is out (I know that I am just one person - but there might be others who think the same)

Wow! That looks absolutely amazing.
Maybe this is a stupid suggestion but if you get it to be an xbox live game (they seem to do well) then it has every chance of being a success. Not sure how much Microsoft will take but worth consdering.

I'm with you guys. I don't even know what this game is about but from the alpha build the 3D graphics look slick as hell. If you look at a game like Zombies!!! MS took it under its wing, gave it XBox Live integration and now it'll get a sh!tload of sales because of that. And that seems to be what they're donig with high performance games so it's worth pursuing...
If you write for Android you won't make money. No one buys anything on that platform. if you write for iOS no one will see your game in the sea of apps. WP7 still has potential.
Moving this to SW development since this is an ongoing project. Once its in the "its an app" stage I will move it back to the release section.

With regard to the kind words about the looks of the project, thank you.
The environment for level one (which was shown in the video in it's incomplete form) was 210K polygons.
Appaloosa is an old school western pistol pack'n arcade style shooter. It's based in a fantastic, toony, world centered loosely around America's late 1800's Old West. It's a rail shooter with shorter action-areas that can be completed in a single mobile time wasting session. So think western popup shooter crossed with Time Crisis; and add tumble-weed bonus rounds ala Galaga. It also had direct Face Book integration for quick posting of achievements. The game was to be priced at $.99 for each level (we were toying with the idea of releasing one level at a time, episodic style) or $2.99 for the complete game.
About WP7 being viable (currently, say this year 2011) to develop apps for... I don't see the indicators or hard data that proves so. And I'm not saying this with a confrontational tone, I just haven't seen any. I keep hearing lazy statistics (which are easily manipulated like, "fastest sales", "highest rate of apps", "most devs to date", etc.) and praise ("performing better then expected")... but the hard numbers are being held for some reason. I would bet no one had recovered their time investment for WP7 development yet, let along make a living from it.
Regardless, the numbers of phones sold is something to be mindful of, but more important is how the paid apps are selling. And the short answer is they aren't.
Games sell more then any other app and 'LIVE' games sell the most. We knew we would be dead in the water without 'LIVE' support, but when we spoke to a MSFT rep in Belgium we got the answer, "oh LIVE... yes yes, that is tricky. Probably can't get you LIVE status; that is reserved for the big guys. Let me know when your game is done, and I will see what I can do to push it up the list."
We were also in contact with a dev studio who's game has always been in the top 10 and has "LIVE" certification. Their game has sold in the tens of thousands; which doesn't even cover dev costs. Maybe the costs will be recovered over the next year. But that 'maybe' was a risk I couldn't take; not with a self-funded (sweat equity) game.
We weren't looking to make big bucks. Just wanted to be able to exercise our craft and make a living. Everyone on the team was willing to live on 1/3 a typical studio salary in exchange for creative freedom and a chance to gain from their own sweat equity. We all brought senior experience to the table (I've worked on Tomb Raider, Half-Life, Tribes, Tony Hawk, and others). Sadly, the numbers aren't there. Punch in some basic math numbers on keeping 3 people alive for a 9 month dev cycle; plus additional time for sales and payment, and it's just not an equation that balances yet. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I'm bound by the realities of the real world, so at the New Year we had to evaluate the project progress and platform landscape.
If anyone has direct access to a MSFT rep, I would be happy to chat with them about bringing the game to market; Or point them to this post.
I guess the point of this post is that the phone is capable of pushing some great graphics and supporting original, mobile specific, titles of very high quality. But if a tiny 3 person team can't justify a 9 months development risk... then I see a chicken-n-egg scenario formed.

@lard666 One thing you have not accounted for in your numbers are Xbox sales. I am assuming this is written in XNA which means you can release it on the Xbox with it's 30 million users and $1 billion revenue last year almost at the flick of a switch.
I'm not saying this means you would definitely recoup your costs, but I know quite a few people who have high-selling titles on XBL, so it is possible.
I'd also like to point out that regional MS reps are nowhere near as helpful as their US counterparts. We had more luck contacting US people directly than we did liaising with the Swedish reps. I cannot say for certain that this is the same everywhere, but I have had similar experience in two other European countries in the past.

I mean I understand that it's to be released on both the Xbox and WP7 at the same time but really? That's it? I am thoroughly disappointed this time. Xbox has dug through mounds of **** just to make a name for itself and what has Windows Phone 7 shown in that department? I mean there's ilomilo and then theres iphone clones. It's so sad to see a first rate OS by a corporate giant turned into a third rate gaming platforms because they'd rather spend a huge budget on advertising what the phone can currently do rather than making that Xbox live tile appeal to a plethora of users who had hope in their hearts when they saw Xbox live integration and watched it be shat on with garbage like... well... half the stuff on the Xbox live WP7 marketplace. I don't have an xbox, so I don't care so much about the integration, but I'm finding way more games I like on my phone right now than on android or winmo.
Currently working on twin blades, AC, I dig it, and The Harvest. Also play majong(sp) tiles and a couple rounds of spades as well.

Ah, R.I.P. Twin Blades. It was a great game unfortunately I've since swapped memory cards coincidentally on the day it vanished from the market and alas I am left without one of the defining games on the platform. I Dig It I havent really visited in some time due to the inability to save (not sure if that's still present), The Harvest has somewhat annoying controls, a virtual joystick makes more sense than a point and click diablo-esque phone game in my opinion, and AC has been on multiple other platforms as well as the other two games though perhaps not the exact same program. The astounding part though is regardless of the faults it's still the best. It's just that they've given us an amazing game or two (The Harvest really is amazing the controls just aren't for me) and then since have lacked innovation greatly. Where I thought they were going to try and stand alone it now looks like they're trying to be a "me too" platform. I did recieve an email from someone regarding a mobile version of Torchlight though and though they couldn't confirm or deny they did tell me it was an option they were exploring. That would be amazing as that game only takes like what? 140 megs on the xbox? Dull it down a bit and it could be a game changer for WP7.

yeah and though I'm ok with that theyre throwing money at devs to release iPhone ports. Originality is Microsoft ticket and they've got more capable devs on their rolodex than any other mobile os. They should utilize those resources...

I'm starting to agree with you about all the new releases. Puzzle games have their place (especially on a mobile phone platform), but without more action titles, it makes it seem like XBox live is not really a serious reason for someone to get a WP7 as Microsoft would like people to think.
That said, I have actually really, really enjoyed the XBox Live games. I used WinMo and Android for a long time before WP7 and never really got into gaming on either platform but for some reason, I just started playing games on WP7 a lot. I don't have an XBox so the integration with XBox is not something I really care about. I like the achievements. It gives me something to play for.
The April releases will keep me satisfied for a while, but in my opinion, they need a lot more releases like those in April, not just every now and then.
edit: oh yeah, an afterthought... maybe chill out on the tower defense games. 1 is enough on the entire platform. It seems like every other game on the Marketplace is a freakin tower defense game. Not a big fan.

Is there a single sports game on this platform? XBox may not have many either....but some sports games (i.e. one button swing type games) are made for mobile.

I agree about the tower defense games, but the star wars one is actually quite fun...
We could definitely use some more games, but we are still getting them faster than android!!!
How do y'all like WP7? I'm still on WinMo because Garmin Mobile XT is awesome, particularly where there is no cellular coverage. Also, I do not own a laptop and do a lot of long emails on my phone when I'm not at home with my 70lb desktop and I'm irritated that I can't get a WP7 device with the exact same keyboard as my Rhodium and at least the latest Qualcomm 45nm goodness in it complete with Adreno 205, much less the upcoming dual Cortex A8 with independent clock speed and CPU voltage and Adreno 220. Why in the Sam Hill did M$ decide that only 65nm OG Snapdragon SoC's were going to go into WP7 devices?
I read a few reviews of the Euro-spec 7 Pro and it seems that HTC used a crappy LCD but not as crappy as the HD7's, and they somehow messed up the chassis of the Rhodium and the keyboard. I like that I can get giant batteries for these things and that unibody sh*t jus doesn't float my boat. I guess I'm just pissed that WP7 is locked to 65nm Snapdragon and irritated with HTC for messing with the landscape qwerty slider chassis and keyboard that they perfected with the Rhodium.

huh. most reviewers have said the 7 pro keyboard is the best keyboard since the tp2. Those tp2's won't last forever.
I dont see any android for hd7 soon, Its apps are boring and even tho it should have good apps already like angry birds and plants vs zombies and whatever, I dont see them coming to wp7... Im so sorry I chose hd7 instead of iPhone 4, I wanted something refreshing but got a piece of crap which im stuck with for the next 2 years....

wow is this really gonna turn into a thread bashing the PS3? Its the only system I have and I like it the best, its unfortunate that the hack happened but what can you do? Its getting fixed now and hopefully it wont happen again. 360, PS3, IOS, Windows Phone are all great in their own ways, apparently none of you can understand that though as you have to bash whatever you dont have or like.

Most of the information leaked was old information and the brunt of the stuff that mattered was for Japanese people.
Not that it matters.
I think PS3 owners are more likely to accept an outtage because many/most of them don't pay for Online Play - contrary to XBL. If XBL goes down everyone that plays online is watching their money trickle away (Time is money, as they say).
I think the biggest hit Sony will take will come from the SOE MMORPG division. All of their games went down for 2-3 weeks and I have no doubt a lot of people will just play another game because 3 weeks in an MMORPG is an eternity. It can kill guilds and demoralize the playerbase, things like that...
That being said, the XB360 desperately needs a browser, USB Keyboard/Mouse Support, and perhaps even some version of a Flash/Flash Lite player that works decently, along with decent DLNA and the ability to load media onto the HD instead of just streaming it from WMC. I think the PS3 will take a hit but it will still sell decently because it is infinitely more flexible than teh XB360.
I personally got the 360 because it tends to have better Role Playing Games on it than the PS3 - which seems better for people who really like FPS Shooters and stuff like that...
@ OP: Why would you buy an HD7 for Android? The Android sets that were out when the HD7 released were monumentally better from a hardware standpoint with much better screens and GPUs, among other things (FFC, etc.). I'll never understand the logic of getting a WP7 handset and then coming here to cry because some random unsupported OS hasn't been ported to it yet... Could have done yourself a favor and gotten an HD2 for cheaper, IMO. It's literally the same hardware with a better build and different buttons... For shame

I think PS3 owners are more likely to accept an outtage because many/most of them don't pay for Online Play - contrary to XBL. If XBL goes down everyone that plays online is watching their money trickle away (Time is money, as they say).
I think the biggest hit Sony will take will come from the SOE MMORPG division. All of their games went down for 2-3 weeks and I have no doubt a lot of people will just play another game because 3 weeks in an MMORPG is an eternity. It can kill guilds and demoralize the playerbase, things like that...
That being said, the XB360 desperately needs a browser, USB Keyboard/Mouse Support, and perhaps even some version of a Flash/Flash Lite player that works decently, along with decent DLNA and the ability to load media onto the HD instead of just streaming it from WMC. I think the PS3 will take a hit but it will still sell decently because it is infinitely more flexible than teh XB360.
I personally got the 360 because it tends to have better Role Playing Games on it than the PS3 - which seems better for people who really like FPS Shooters and stuff like that...
@ OP: Why would you buy an HD7 for Android? The Android sets that were out when the HD7 released were monumentally better from a hardware standpoint with much better screens and GPUs, among other things (FFC, etc.). I'll never understand the logic of getting a WP7 handset and then coming here to cry because some random unsupported OS hasn't been ported to it yet... Could have done yourself a favor and gotten an HD2 for cheaper, IMO. It's literally the same hardware with a better build and different buttons... For shame

I disagree, this whole gen is all about shooters, shooter and more shooters, its ridiculous! Thats all that sells nowadays...and I think the 360 is usually the one that people associate with shooters for some reason. Maybe because Halo and Gears of war.
Either way Im tired of shooters...and I hate COD...
And you don't think RPGs like Fable, Dragon Age, Final Fantasy, and Elder's Scrolls sell, among other things (Drivers, Action/Adventure, etc.)?

No one is forcing you to play shooters. There are hundreds of games on either platform to choose from. You don't have to be at the mercy of a few online game reviewers...
I think the PS3 controller is so superior to the XB360s for FPS and Drivers that if I was into those types of games I wouldn't have even considered an XB360... I got the XB because it was cheaper at a higher HD size (in addition to reasons stated above), too bad that HD is largely useless compared to a PS3...
And yea, those exclusives probably have a lot to do with it

microsoft doesnt have any proper marketing strategies i mean the games are overpriced, the apps are still at a low number and there is no real freedom in this os.
dont get me wrong im a user of wp7 and i was excited by the phone but the more they release things the more disappointed i am. you arent paying for games like angry birds and plants vs zombies your basically paying ridiculous prices to use their xbl feature.
i think that if they want to break into the market they should really consider making these games free i know its unfair to the developers but think about how much more people would be interested to hear that they can get free proper games or apps.
but if you want to go and tell these developers to develop games for your os then i think they should make it free like what google did with angry birds although they paid them a butt load of money. microsoft is trying to compete with people that have been in the market for longer making these things free would surely attract more people.

Making Angry Birds free is not going to sell handsets. Having a feature complete phone (Mango) and sales reps that are actually willing to sell Windows Phones will be what will move handsets.
Once you start working for free, let us know then we'll take your point up with Microsoft and the developers who will obviously be ecstatic to forgo any charges for their work.
my point isnt saying there isnt any free apps.. its saying maybe instead of jacking up prices so high they should focus on reasonable prices, its because its xbl integrated that they charging so high

if they make games for free , they either pay the developers or screw them.
if they screw the developers no one is going to make more applications for wp7....
and really... the phones costs like 500 dollars, paying 50 dollars more for your apps is not unreasonable.....
and of course that microsoft marketing sucks compared to apple, apple is the most successful marketing company in the world. ofcourse this does not make it impossible for Microsoft to improve
I'd rather they charge $2.99 so that we have more high quality games and apps on our phones. It's not that much money...less than a burger king meal.

a) Apps prices: This is not Microsoft's responsability. The prices are fixed by the developers of the apps. Marketplace is just the site who makes it possilbe for you to purchase them.
b) Microsoft marketing: Yes, in this respect, they are still far behind Apple. But you have to consider that Microsoft has not the same market approach like Apple.
- Apple has their own sales outlets
- Apple has a big influence regarding marketing and advertising budgets with their retail partners. Apple dictates what they have to do and what they have to spend.
- Same applies to the selected providers who sell Apple products.
Microsoft is in partnership with the device makers and the providers and depending on them. Now who is responsible for the marketing? Mircrosoft? The Makers? The Providers? Microsoft startet with a budget of 500 Mio $. But this is peanuts for a global campaign to introduce something totally new and from what I can see at least here in Europe, the Makers and the Providers are still very reluctant to invest their money in promoting WP7
Well, technically Microsoft does set the prices of XBL games, since they all are published under the "Microsoft Games Studios" banner.
As far as "free" games "screwing" developers or resulting in lower quality, remember that the most sought-after game that has just been released on WP7 is a port of a game that is already available on the other platforms at a lower price, with more levels. Oh, and according to most recent data, Rovio is earning about a million dollars a month from the ads in the free Android version. That doesn't exactly sound like they are getting "screwed" to me.
I was in long Island, NY last week listening to a rock station as I was traveling through. I heard 3 Windows Phone 7 commercals on the radio. It was on aAir plane and they discusses something about powering off phones incuding you with the new Windows Phone (and a few others got in a WOW type thing about the phone)
Same commercal 3 times, it was for the Verizon HTC Trophy (didn't think Verizon cared about it that much)
This would be the first time I heard a Radio ad, I've seen tons on TV tho...
As for the App costs, I will agree, anything over $2.99 for a mobile app or game is WAY too much. MAYBE in a rare case for a High end game (big brand name with the game to back it up) $3.99-$4.99 is acceptable, in a RARE CASE. $6.99 for Sonic is crazy, not for a game (tried the demo) that should just be a flashback game($1.99) as it plays just like the 16bit sega system did.

Actually I think they did. When Microsoft released the first few games (before lots of developer "good games" came in), some were at $4.99 (think ilomilo and few other of the release games) , so developers said, Microsoft can do it, why can't we ?
If they started out with new games at $1.99 or $2.99 I bet it would of set a standard because no one wanted to be that crazy over priced person that does not sell any programs. Now you see $4.99-6.99 the norm for mid line games and I still think that's nuts for a phone game (if it was xbox live on my 360 in 720p/1080p with 5.1 audio, it's different and worth that or more)
So it's okay that you spend a thousand dollars every year to use your smartphone, but omg they better not charge more than $2.99 for an app!
AT&T 450 minutes + unlimited text + 2GB data = $85 + fees and taxes (about $5) = $90 a month
$90 x 12 months = $1080 a year
And that's for the cheapest talk plan they have.

its not about spending how much on a contract.. thats kinda what you bought the phone for, its not about spending alot on games either its about what microsoft is trying to do, being different sometimes isnt a good thing as it leads to un-satisfied customers and thus leading to people changing back to android or iphone.
i believe they can still come out right after they listen to their customers.
reasonable prices for reasonable games.
and if you wanna say angry birds is worth it, guess again its missing the new chapters.. its only got 1 - 4.. wheres the rest.. is this the best that they could do for MS? wheres seasons and rio?
Marketing:
Yes the WP7 marketing hasn't been the best. The onslaught hasn't fully started yet though - I believe they are waiting first for year close and stronger marketing from their favorite partner... Nokia.
I expect Mango marketing will be better but they haven't quite hit stride - this is less then a year out with limited hardware... just give it some time.
App prices... yes they are high - simple fact is NUMBERS. App Devs will charge what they can get away with. WP7 want the apps and they are willing to pay the prices for them. As the device count spreads the pricing may begin to drop to attract other users who have not downloaded because of cost.
We are here at the beginning so of course we'll get hit the hardest
Microsoft marketing is horrendous. I've had 5 WinMo devices, too long complacent with the incremental changes. They had a market to themselves but had let others run away with it. The large oceanliner that is Microsoft takes so long to change heading. I was looking forward to WP7, and when it first came out at Verizon, I went to check it out. I've been to 4 VZ stores and none of them have the phone activated. NONE! I can't check out IE to browse anything. How is that supposed to sell anyone? I tried to contact Microsoft about the fact that their demo phones aren't even activated, but instead I got some rep from another country. I told him to escalate it to his manager, provided my info, but no one has gotten back to me. I went back to another VZ store and still... the demo WP7 had no service.
I'm quite upset about it, but I'm not above switching away from WinMo until Microsoft gets a clue with what to do with all the money they make.
I'm going to give calling Microsoft a final shot and see if I can get some fat exec to listen to me.

This attitude blows my mind.. but you aren't alone.
Any app on App Store that isn't 99 cents is littered with reviews demanding that it should be 99 cents.. even if it's only 1.99.
Really.. mind blown. It's seriously de-valuing the concept of a software application.. and making it really hard for me to believe the hype in the mobile industry.
I saw some articles even about Angry Birds profitability.. they mentioned some company investing almost $50 million in Roxio.. but they also mentioned the game hasn't even made $10 million in sales.. although it does allegedly generate $1 million a month in revenue from ads on Android... they said the most profitable part of Roxio is their toy and other item sales.
The numbers don't add up for me.. I get that the budget is small.. but it's still an industry limited by the price consumers are demanding.
ALL of App Store did $1.7 billion in 2010? And that's 350,000 apps?
That's less than $5,000 per app...
By the time Call of Duty Black Ops is a year old.. it will probably have done the same revenue that all of App Store did in 2010... it's already most likely fairly close.

The average price is actually $2.99 for most games (AUD3.99 here in Australia), but I'm not sure if I understand your logic. How does the platform you play the game on change it's worth?
This platfrom has a lot of potential, but MS needs to listen to its users.
App prices are not the reason it will fail. I'm sorry but as a developer my time is worth more than $0.99 Those that think otherwise have no programming experience. Sure can I make millions off of one good app that is 99 cents or free, YES, but the odds of that happening are slim with how many apps come out.
Their marketing is what will kill this platform. well that along with not listening to the needs of the users. The notification system is now going to be behind the other 2 major players and that is not good for heavy users.
They need to fix their endpoint sales. Very few sales reps are excited about the platform.
I have one friend that bought a wp7, focus I think, and he hates it. I keep saying wait for the update, but the update is missing features he wants. The sad thing is they are features that are easily to implement. missing feattures is a whole differnt thread, but he just wants the ability to group his apps kinda like the contacts can be grouped now. The letter search is not a good approach because that requires me to search by name instead of function.
I have SGS and Optimus 7.
Almost every app, that i use in android i can use in wp too.
Only problem, for now, i can't buy apps yet, but that will be fixed when marketplace opens in Finland.
Soon nothing won't keep me on android.
There is so much trash apps on android market, so it is hard to find really important apps.
