[Q] Unrooting a Desire completely to stock for warranty repair

Hi,
I'm at my wits end.
I've spent ages (most of last night and all of this morning !) looking through google and This forum, XDA developers etc etc etc and I'm no further forward
I have/had (not sure where I am at the moment.. will explain in a minute) a rooted Desire on FroYo. then my Desire started the overheating problem and randomly rebooting every 3 to 5 minutes. The only way I can keep it running long enough to do anything is to use an ice pack and chill the phone !
Anyway I tried to do a roll-back and lose root access etc and return my desire (UK Vodafone) to stock so I can send it in for a repair.
I initially used my nandroid backup to roll back to the previous version of my software, then I re did the official OTA to 2.2 and it SEEMED to work.. except I still seemed to have root access.. I certainly had the Superuser application in my applications list.
Apparently to delete superuser (or is it Superuser with capital S? I seem to have both?!) You need root (figures!) so.. ran unrevoked again, seemed to unroot again but :-
(a) try as I must i can't uninstall Superuser.apk. Tried using root manager, terminal and adb but I keep getting errors saying something about read write permissions?
(b) I have also read that I may need to restore the official Android recovery (have clockwork mod recovery at the moment) that needs to go too.
I just want to return my Desire back to store/factory.. but I can't seem to do this.
I'm feeling thick as cold mince at the moment.. Seems the process differs depending on different HBOOT versions/ device versions / root methods / day of week / alignment of the planets !!!
can anyone PLEASE help with an idiot (and boy do I mean IDIOT) proof guide to get rid of all traces of my naughtiness and back to a warranty friendly 2.2 Desire??

I think the simplest way is to use the windows-based RUU update files from shipped-roms.com as they'll replace your recovery with a stock one and unroot your phone (sends it completely back to stock vodafone).
The only vodafone UK one i see on there is..

There are a couple of caveats:
1) you may need to downgrade your hboot before the RUU will sucessfully flash the phone. There's a bunch of threads in the developer forum on how to downgrade hboot, depends on your screen type, which leads to...
2) this is kind of important, is your screen SLCD or AMOLED? The vodafone uk RUU is dated mid-june, so it will almost certainly only work on AMOLED desires. If you got the phone before mid-july it's definitely AMOLED but if you're unsure there are threads about how to check (i think the easiest way is to pull up a dark screen such as the settings menu in a darkened room and see if the black areas of the screen are true black or just very dark grey like on an LCD pc monitor).
Providing your phone is AMOLED, once you've installed that RUU you can use the OTA upgrade in the about phone menu to go from 2.1 to 2.2.

please report back if you have got rid of Superuser that way because i have the same problem
i formatted my sd card and then updated OTA2.2 and for some reason i still have Superuser and i plan on returning to warranty for camera problems

Thats because the OTA (in contrast to a RUU) does not install a completely fresh image of the /system partition (where the root files normally are installed) but just replace/patch most of the existing files. Other files, like su will stay untouched.
You also won't be able to just remove those files as you are obviously s-on, which means even root can't write to system easily.
Some options for you are:
- find a RUU that fits your device and install it (there will be lots of instructions for flashing around) €: Watch out if you have an SLCD!!! Can't state that often enough...
- S-off your device, remove all root files from /system, flash the original recovery/splash/hboot via fastboot (this might help)

i had the same problem, i solved it by flashing a RUU then rerooted. i am fine now

unrooting the original stock rom
Hi guys, I have a similar problem. I rooted my desire with unrevocked 3.21 and everything was fine.
BUT I havent flashed any new rom, I still have the original rom, I was only interested in rooting.
Now I need to sell my phone so I want to restore factory settings.
Can I do it with just doing a "factory reset" or I need to flash using the RUU....exe?

I just rooted my HTC Desire using unrEVOked 3.21. Everything was fine. I had superuser permission and so on.
Than i had a sudden reboots. After reboot the N1 gallery crashed. N1 gallery might have cause the reboots. So i remove it and everything is fine till now.
I wanted to load a custom rom. I boot in to bootloader and notice that its s-on.
My question is can I load custom roms with s-on. How come I'm s-on and I have root access. If everything is fine, than what does this s-on do. I'm new at all this, so please bare with me.

S-Off = Full root ( Not really necessary unless you want to write to system and stuff while in Android. you can also change your splash screen if you would like)
S-On with root by unrevoked = Flash custom roms, radios, kernels, etc..
S-On is Sercurity On which means that the System files are only Read-Only.
S-Off uses AlphaRev's Hboot as this removes S-On. Its the Only way to get S-Off. I just S-Offed myself yesterday. It was scary at first but i really think its a good thing as you can use Metamorph/NinjaMorph or stuff.
I'd recommend just keep this information and when you get used to clockworkmod recovery then S-Off.
Remember that to get into recovery you must boot into Bootloader then scroll to Recovery with the volume up and down buttons then press the power down.
Oh, and to scroll between the clockworkmod menu, just use the trackpad. I also would not ecommend using Rom Manager as i remember the first time i used it and booted into recovery i was scqred to death as it brought me to a attention thing. I was scared to death.

Thank you so much.. That was really usefull information bro... you mention that my system files are read only with unrEVOked... yday i used root explorer to change some system files... could that be the cause my device rebooted...
another thing i want to know is that i want to install busybox.. do i need s-off to do this... if i ever hard/soft reset will the busybox also be removed...
and i also removed some stock applications... will they also be reinstalled if i reset my HTC desire...

You dont need S-OFF to install busybox. Dont worry about S-OFF. Most power users dont need it. It's more a liability.
Stock apps may be reinstalled with choosing to install a ROM which includes them. Most ROMS have addon files with stock apps. Or you may choose and pick from a ROM Kitchen.

No problem Last time when i rooted without S-Off, i tried copying things around the system folders and it never worked. That might and should have been the cause of your reboots. The rest of it has been answered by Droidzone

thanks guys for all the information... i just download a new custom rom and was going to flash it... but there is something bothering me... its the radio... the custom rom has different radio... will the radio change once i install the custom... is there any complications...
what is the things i need to consider before flashing a rom... im really sorry guys but this phone cost RM2000 (Malaysian Ringgit)... i dont want screw it... just taking precautions...

Flashing a ROM is not a big deal. If something happens to go wrong, you can always revert to the Nandroid restore. Custom ROMs often come with different Radios. Just install whichever Radio the developer recommends, and it should go smoothly.
At times a ROM may have different Radios for different functions. Like, if you want the phone running faster, use one radio. If you want more battery life, use another and so on.
If you've already rooted, flashing a new ROM wont create any more trouble than you're already in. Just dont be that hasty to do S-OFF. It's S-OFF that often leads to softbricks (usually).

but ussually i dont really do nandroid restore's because i keep lots of Roms for backup in case one does go wrong. Its best to do both

[Q] HTC Sense UI on Tmobile G2 how?

Im new to all this. i recently got my g2 and i want sense ui.
what are the pros and cons? do irisk breaking my phone (idont got a warranty anyways). is it simple? will it effect certain functions of the phone?
if there is a simple and 100% safe way to root my phone
post a link or let me know wassup with instructions.

flash the Desire Z stock RUU?

Nothing is 100% safe. But the Wiki method of rooting is the safest there is, and the risk is low. Just read as much as you can before you start, and follow the instructions very carefully, and you will be fine.

As how to install Sense on the phone, the best way is probably to flash the Virtuous custom ROM after you root. Not only one of the more recent Sense Froyo builds (1.85), but also will keep you rooted, comes overclocked by default, and has some cool extra features and optimizations. Installing Virtuous is a snap. After you're rooted, install ROM Manager, flash clockworkmod and make a nandroid backup of your current ROM, then use ROM Manager to flash Virtuous.

I believe being S-On (and/or not having SuperCID) will prevent him from flashing the stock DZ RUU onto the G2. I'm sure somebody here can confirm that.

Not only it will prevent him from Flashing Stock DZ onto G2, he might even end up bricking his phone.
I have G2, rooted, used Virtuous on it with Sense, it was fantastic, but I have never been a fan of Sense ROMs in general, so went back to CyanogenMod and enjoying Gingerbread right now.
Rooting is not rocket science but it does require you to fully understand the method, if you don't, ask questions, read forums and get yourself familiar with before trying and end up bricking your phone.
How to one by one :
First thing you need is Root Access

Once Rooted, first thing you want to do is install ROM Manager from market, search for ROM Manager, check this link if you can't find what you are looking for.

Once installed, open the app, give Root access to the application and Install ClockWorkMod Recovery on your phone(CMW).
Once this is installed you are almost there, between your rooted and cmw installed phone and you flash any sense rom, is to make Nandroid Backup.
Here is how to make a backup of your current/stock ROM. Boot into recovery mod, go to Advanced option, click Backup and sit back and wait for about 5 minutes, system will do a backup of your phone to the SD card. Once done, you are pretty safe, incase if you screw up something, you can go back to original and get your phone back alive.
Once you did the backup, now you can download any ROM you want, flash anything you want and enjoy. One thing you would want to know is S-On and S-Off. S-On means there is a check for the Stock ROM, if you try installing anything with is not made for your career, you will screw up your phone. Once S-Off, you can flash anything and everything available for your phone. Which means, you can install CyanogenMod, you can keep Stock, Install DZ ROM, any ROM you want.
There is a way to Check if your phone gained S-Off or not, it is explained in the link I gave you above.

He is completely right! Another way this can be done is through ROM Manager and flashing a Virtous ROM with enhancements. This ROM is no different from the stock and is completely stable and I can guarantee your safety. But I do still advise setting up a back up just in case you start to not like it. I know I did because, it is to simple but it does look good! Lol

One thing you should worry about is your CID. If your CID isn't one of the standard HTC Vision ones then it wont let you do it unless you've rooted the phone with SuperCID.

[Q] Questions about warranty repair (BravoC)

Hi All,
I have a US Cellular BravoC that needs to go in for repair. I am one of the unlucky ones who are experiencing the overheating/forced resetting while doing CPU intensive tasks.
I currently have S-OFF, CWM Recovery 3.0.2.4
I know that I can download 2.2 RUU in fastboot and that will return my phone to unrooted, S-ON... and my warranty repair should go through fine. The problem is, I want to be able to return to CM or Oxygen when I get my phone back.
1) If I return a phone with S-OFF and CWM recovery is it likely that HTC will deny the warranty repair?
2) Does anyone know if there is an RUU for 2.1?
3) Is it possible to flash the stock recovery and leave S-OFF as a back door?
4) Is it even likely that I will get the same software back? In other words... should I not even worry about because I will likely get back something different (Just flash the 2.2 RUU and say screw it).
I still do not really understand the whole "goldcard" thing or how to really use fastboot effectively, so I don't have the untouched ROM that came with the phone. Only the rooted one I created with nandroid backup before installing CWM

When you get your phone back you can just reroot and S-OFF again. You need to find the US Cellular ruu and run it.
Maybe someone else can help you with that.

So if I understand this correctly, even if I have 2.2 installed (which, as of now, can not be rooted) I could find and install the 2.1 RUU and then root the phone? I think the problem is HTC never released a 2.1 RUU. I am pretty sure I go to 2.2 (or HTC upgrades my phone to 2.2) I will lose the ability to root it.
Man, I just hate the stock ROM so much I want to try avoiding it at all costs.

Roll back from Gingerbread 2.3.3

I have a Desire Bravo (A8181)
I installed Gingerbread 2.3.3 using the file from the HTC site.
I am not happy with it ( spontaneous reboots, drains battery, other crazy stuff)
I don't want to root so I'd just like to go back to 2.2
Can someone link to a procedure to get back to 2.2.

People are using Official 2.3.3 mostly as a troubleshooting tool or for warranty purpose.
However you cant downgrade it by RUU to lower version. The RUU will not proceed giving version problems.
The only way would be to SOFF using revolutionary and thereafter if you really want FROYO you can choose from many of the stock offerings available at Desire Development section.

My phone is not rooted
Is there anything else to do, besides SOFF and getting FROYO. Do I have to root the phone?

You dont have to root the phone if you use revolutionary. But definitely will have to go SOFF. If you are worried because of brick possibility then you must know that with Android 2.3.3 the way to root is via SOFF. Actually with revolutionary SOFF is the main thing. After that you can flash a rooted rom from recovery if you want which is a low risk activity.
I would personally recommend Mildwild 5.0 based on CM7.2 as one of the most stable rom.

NO need to s-off if u r s-off, get 4ext recovery updater apk install it, run it, now u will have the latest recovery.
now u can pretty much put what ever rom u want on.
Just read instructions in the thread the rom came from and remember to NANDROID BACKUP as soon as u install the recovery.

I did manage to install Mildwild ( I couldn't get 4ext to install so I re did the s-off, rooted and installed Mildwild 5)

I think that comes from your device being a PVT1. These type of desires are known to reboot when overheating due to a motherboard problem.

I just ordered an original battery from HTC, if I can't find a software fix to 2.3.7 and if the new battery doesn't work then I will go back to 2.2.
But I think that because I used the official RUU from HTC for 2.3, then I have to use a custom ROM for 2.2. If I am wrong then please tell me, after all these problems I would use an official 2.2 ROM if it would make my problems go away.

The key is you still get spontaneous reboots. That means it is not related to ROM.
I agree with the assessment of abaa.... Your problem seems to be hardware related and nothing you can do other than replace motherboard. However if you want to rule out battery problems just keep it connected to charger and play a heavy game. If it reboots then your motherboard problem is confirmed.

The problem is shut down.
I haven't had rebooots
But I'll try heavy gaming while plugged in

I have a bit of good news, I think
I have made some changes to user options, according to some suggestions I found and have some good results.
After my changes, In 6 days I have had only one freeze ( where the phone was asleep and only a battery pull could fix the problem).
Before the changes I had 4-8 freezes each day, for a few weeks.
I will do some more testing but i think it is because of one of two reasons. Either because I swithced to "GSM only" from "GSM/WCDMA ( WCDMA prefered)" Or because I selected " Use only 2G networks"
I'll play around for a week or two but that is my interim result.
