I have the same questions as well, more specifically are:
1) are there any side effects of rooting, such as the dreaded Loss of Signal problem I've been reading about?
2) I need to root with the "deodexed" root if i want to flash roms or themes?
3) How do i flash roms/themes without Clockwork Mod because i want a stock kernel?
-If I've read correctly, rooting takes away clockwork mod if you want a stock kernel (i could be wrong).
Thanks in advance guys!
1 ... Not getting in that fight some say its not the kernel and some say it is... But even phones that are stock get los ....
2. There are a couple of kernels that have cwm 5 read the threads flash one through odin ....
3... Choose what rom you want to flash ...... Flash it then when done... Back to odin flash stock kernel but when you want to flash another rom you'll have to flash cwm back on it ..... You can have a rooted rom with stock kernel this way

The custom kernels are causing LOS to happen more frequently. Some have had it on stock but almost everyone had it on custom kernel. Root using crawrj odex or deodex eg30 and u will stay on stock kernel. Best way to root. If u want themes use deodex if not odex. Odex is faster.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
I was also wondering if the android os bug is present on custom roms as well. I would like to know this before rooting.

Thanks for the reply....i do have a couple of other questions.
how would i flash roms/themes without clockwork mod? I've always flashed with cwm.
also, faster as in the phones functionality when using odex? or a faster rooting process?
Sorry for all the quesitons, this has been the most "afraid" i've been to root a phone from all i've read on the forums
Thanks Musclehead

Which version?
Or for what? Depending on your answer the recommendation could be different.
Most popular is Rogue recovery kernel which is based on cwm 5.0.2.8.

You had CWM where did it go? Nah just messin man... OP try to be a little more specific, what did you flash which caused you to loose CWM? What setup are you currently running? Which recovery are you looking for?
Boy, what a newb... my internet is down and Im just a little pissed, sorry for the lack of info.
I was on a stock EL29 rooted rom w/ cwm. I flashed a TSM rom and poof, all I have left is stock recovery. I want a GB version of cwm ( I don't care which version as long as its stable) as well as a good kernel/modem/rom if you have recommendations on those as well. I just need something stable and that has hacked hotspot included. Also, can you not flash .zip files with Odin?
Thanks guys, my bad on the newbish thread starter.

IMO if you want hotspot on GB, the simplest way is foxfi, no root required.
Assuming you have root (either pre-rooted or using auto root for the earlier versions), the auto root package has a collection of all the various kernels repacked with CWM for you to install.

What i did first was flash a rooted kernel with Odin .
Odin:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337
Kernels :http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II/SPH-D710/Kernels i like Team Rogues Kernels
Now that your rooted boot into recover by holding volume up + power at the same time and make a backup of your current Rom
Then i just followed the install guide for whatever Rom i was flashing .

so its safe to flash el26 kernal on a el29 rom??
edit: im also not rooted
What Rom do you plan on flashing first ? Some require you to flash a certain kernel for their Rom .
But it should be ok for you to flash any recovery for your first one to make a back up.

Flashing could be addicting check out the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525495
Based on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525495
It seems that the main issue was some emmc issue causing bricks when flashing with ICS because we didn't have an official release or the source.
I've seen a few rom developers state that they think this problem has been solved in some later kernels. Now that we have an official ICS release, Is this a safe process now? Are there certain roms or kernels I should be using to get ICS recovery to work safely?
Basically I want to no longer have to flash el29 just to try things like Google Now ports and stuff. I want a fully mobile option to flash multiple roms at my leisure like other phones
Agats kernel/recovery is safe. Sleshepic's kernel/recovery is also safe. I flash ICS to ICS alot thru their recoveries no problem.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I am glad someone else asked this because I was just about to do the same. I am on Agat and was about to go from stock rom to AOKP Milestone 6 but wasn't sure if I could flash back to TW based roms without having to go to EL29.
How do I flash their recoveries? I already rooted and have superuser. I just don't have a recovery and I'm confused on the articles I've read. Thanks in advance.

Every kernel is safe as long as you don't factory reset. use calks flash all zip instead of the wipe in recovery. Rujelus22 has a 2x wipe zip that does it twice. They wipe cache, dalvik, and system data in one shot.
What kernel should i be downloading? I have stock ICS rooted.

The safest custom recovery is EL26. Personally I use chris41g's. It can be found here. Just flash the tar using pc Odin, reboot into recovery, and you are good to go. However, make sure before you do that you save a stock(or custom) zip kernel of the rom build you are on so you can flash it once you are done in cwm. Personally, I would use Agat's kernel, flash it after you do your backup, that way you always have cwm good luck. I'm on Boost too. Let me know if you have any questions.

Where do I get EL26? I'm a little apprehensive about using pc odin. I soft bricked my phone using it a couple of times. Like I said before I'm on gc01 and I used framaroot to root the phone and had to flash an fi22 kernel and update to jelly bean through Kies again. I'm not an expert when it comes to Samsungs lol. I had an HTC before and it was so easy lol. I love this phome though. I attached a screenshot of where I'm at.

The link I attached has the EL26. I understand your frustration, but I assure you if you do it right, it is completely safe. But if you insist on not using it, you can use Mobile Odin since you are already rooted. It's in the play store, and worth every penny. But pc Odin is free . Your call. Either way, make sure you have a gc01 kernel in zip format to flash back to after your backup.

Does the gc01 kernel in zip format have to be a rooted gc01 kernel so I don't loose root? And where do I find one? I know I have a lot of questions lol I'm just new to this. Thanks in advance

That's fine. That's what we're here for. I'd rather you ask pre-emptive questions and get it right than brick your phone by doing something wrong . Here's the link for the GC01. It has cwm too, so you can use it as your daily. And to answer your question, no, you don't need a "rooted" kernel. As a matter of fact, the kernel you have now is stock .

If you downloaded the zip, then yes. If you want a good, stable kernel that has custom recovery, let's do this. Download the tar of the GC01 and flash it using Mobile Odin. That way you don't have to use EL26 at all. . Just flash it, reboot into recovery, and cwm will be included in the GC01 kernel so you can do backups/restores with that.

Yes, through odin, but if you want to flash custom roms, use el26 custom recovery. Roms come with their own kernel, some custom. But is you are rooted, and want to stay with your jb stock, you can flash agat's or garwynn's custom kernel, both have cwm.

Mobile Odin can not flash modems anyway, and yes, you can flash el26 cwm in the recovery your have now, as long as its zip format. Boot to recovery, flash el26, reboot into new recovery, flash rom, gapps, modem, reboot, enjoy.
