Rooting Galaxy S2/ Custom Roms [Virgin Mobile] - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I am really scared of bricking my phone and wanted to ask xda to clarify and help me out putting a custom rom on my phone. I have had custom roms on my optimus v and htc one v but never a samsung device and im scared hearing about these bugs that brick your phone and whatever odins are. Can someone give me a guide to root/put a safe recovery on my phone then explain odins? Htc devices have nothing like these sorry if this thread was pointless, if anything just point me to a thread thanks

Rooting is rooting. Once you're rooted you can flash whatever you want. Just follow the guides and you'll be fine. If you figured out how to root htc, this is a breeze!

Yes, through odin, but if you want to flash custom roms, use el26 custom recovery. Roms come with their own kernel, some custom. But is you are rooted, and want to stay with your jb stock, you can flash agat's or garwynn's custom kernel, both have cwm.

And i can just go into my recovery now and flash el26 recovery? And im about to install cm10... all i would do is full wipe and install/ flash gapps i dont need to flash anything in odin or modem or something?

Really stuck on what to do.. How do I get a ICS modem? I have a el26 zip and a ICS modem zip but not sure on what to do. Help appreciated.. Trying to install a 4.2.2 ROM btw

Mobile Odin can not flash modems anyway, and yes, you can flash el26 cwm in the recovery your have now, as long as its zip format. Boot to recovery, flash el26, reboot into new recovery, flash rom, gapps, modem, reboot, enjoy.

No go to his fe22 odin one click thread and use that to go to stock twiz. From there update prl/profile. Then you can go ahead and mobile Odin the el26 cwm kernel and ref lash to whatever rom.

You can still flash a GB kernel even though you have a ICS ROM installed. It won't boot the phone completely(it'll freeze on the Samsung Galaxy SII screen on startup). But you can still get into recovery and download modes. That's the benefit right there. You don't need to flash all that though. Which ROM do you want to be on? The part about using Odin to go to FE22 and then go to EL26 has an extra step in it. You really don't need to flash the FE22 before going to EL26.

Ya some of them have CWM or a different custom recovery. What ROM is it that you want to install? What I mean is you don't need to flash to multiple other kernels/ROMs before eventually going to whichever ROM you want.
Go to the dev section and find sfhubs fe22 Odin one click and flash your phone with that. The reason you do this is so you will be on a stock rom where you can update prl and profile. After you do this, using Odin (with only auto reboot checked in top right corner), flash the el26 cwm kernel. Boot into recovery and from here you can flash back to Frankenstein or blazer whatever you want. You will need a computer.
So...
1. Fe22 Odin one click
2. Boot into fe22 stock rom and update prl/profile
3. Odin the el26 cwm kernel
4. Flash whatever new rom you want.

[Q] Safe to use Recovery in ICS yet?

Based on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525495
It seems that the main issue was some emmc issue causing bricks when flashing with ICS because we didn't have an official release or the source.
I've seen a few rom developers state that they think this problem has been solved in some later kernels. Now that we have an official ICS release, Is this a safe process now? Are there certain roms or kernels I should be using to get ICS recovery to work safely?
Basically I want to no longer have to flash el29 just to try things like Google Now ports and stuff. I want a fully mobile option to flash multiple roms at my leisure like other phones
Agats kernel/recovery is safe. Sleshepic's kernel/recovery is also safe. I flash ICS to ICS alot thru their recoveries no problem.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I am glad someone else asked this because I was just about to do the same. I am on Agat and was about to go from stock rom to AOKP Milestone 6 but wasn't sure if I could flash back to TW based roms without having to go to EL29.
How do I flash their recoveries? I already rooted and have superuser. I just don't have a recovery and I'm confused on the articles I've read. Thanks in advance.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Every kernel is safe as long as you don't factory reset. use calks flash all zip instead of the wipe in recovery. Rujelus22 has a 2x wipe zip that does it twice. They wipe cache, dalvik, and system data in one shot.
What kernel should i be downloading? I have stock ICS rooted.

The safest custom recovery is EL26. Personally I use chris41g's. It can be found here. Just flash the tar using pc Odin, reboot into recovery, and you are good to go. However, make sure before you do that you save a stock(or custom) zip kernel of the rom build you are on so you can flash it once you are done in cwm. Personally, I would use Agat's kernel, flash it after you do your backup, that way you always have cwm good luck. I'm on Boost too. Let me know if you have any questions.

Where do I get EL26? I'm a little apprehensive about using pc odin. I soft bricked my phone using it a couple of times. Like I said before I'm on gc01 and I used framaroot to root the phone and had to flash an fi22 kernel and update to jelly bean through Kies again. I'm not an expert when it comes to Samsungs lol. I had an HTC before and it was so easy lol. I love this phome though. I attached a screenshot of where I'm at.

The link I attached has the EL26. I understand your frustration, but I assure you if you do it right, it is completely safe. But if you insist on not using it, you can use Mobile Odin since you are already rooted. It's in the play store, and worth every penny. But pc Odin is free . Your call. Either way, make sure you have a gc01 kernel in zip format to flash back to after your backup.

That's fine. That's what we're here for. I'd rather you ask pre-emptive questions and get it right than brick your phone by doing something wrong . Here's the link for the GC01. It has cwm too, so you can use it as your daily. And to answer your question, no, you don't need a "rooted" kernel. As a matter of fact, the kernel you have now is stock .

If you downloaded the zip, then yes. If you want a good, stable kernel that has custom recovery, let's do this. Download the tar of the GC01 and flash it using Mobile Odin. That way you don't have to use EL26 at all. . Just flash it, reboot into recovery, and cwm will be included in the GC01 kernel so you can do backups/restores with that.

I sent you a reply in pm, asking what Rom you wanted to flash. AOSP roms use ics modem unless it says specifically in the op to use something different. You already have cwm on your phone with Garwynn's kernel. However, I recommend flashing a safe kernel with cwm(el26) either using Odin or Mobile Odin. You can also download the zip version, reboot into recovery, and flash it worth Garwynn's, because he has Agat's recovery(cwm). If you do it this way, just reboot into recovery after and you'll be on el26 kernel. Wipe everything, flash your rom, modem, reboot, enjoy!

Hmmm...I have never heard of this rom, but of course I do not really go outside XDA to flash. But from what it looks like, it is simply a stock VM rom, with some goodies baked in. And if you are running gb28 modem, that's all you need. And you can try flashing this with Agat's recovery(Garwynn's kernel), but I think the op says that as well. But here's what I would do. Since the recovery link is sxtp's site, and it actually says e4gt in the name, then you should be ok flashing with what you have. Let me know how it goes!

Then you will be able to flash MIUI safely.
The easiest way to root is chainfires autoroot but that won't give you custom recovery you will have to flash separately. Dr ketan has published a gude that is stickied, you can't go wrong if you follow that and dr ketan is always helpful and friendly if your confused

Thanks for the replies.
If i root using CF auto root, how do i flash the twrp recovery?
Is it only roms built using a stock base that i have to worry about the build number then?

You can flash any build number I think the issue is with the latest modem which once flashed can't be downgraded . There are a few threads on it. If you want to use auto root you can use something like rom toolbox pro or I used mobile odin to flash a custom recovery. Personally I recommend phils touch recovery. I think he has an all in one root and custom recovery package that you just flash with odin

If I remember correctly you can downgrade to an earlier rom as long as you reflash your modem
