[Q] Non-sense is a nonsense - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd like to know if someone has found a kernel, which would make the sense performance (nearly)completely flawless in roms such as virtuous sense 2.0.0. or insertcoin 1.6 (or another fast sense rom). I like sense and can't be happy with cm7 and other gingerbread styled.

If there were a kernel that made sense run flawlessly I'm sure they would of added it by now...

Surely if there was a kernel that could bring Sense up to the general performance of AOSP ROMs it would be included in every Sense-based ROM in the dev section.
Unfortunately this kernel doesn't exist. When it comes down to it, Sense is bigger and more resource hungry than stock AOSP ROMs and it just won't be as fast assuming the same device and clock speeds.
People who run custom Sense ROMs understand this and are willing to take the performance hit in order to have the Sense features that they like.

Sense ROMs

I never really been that much into sense but I do like the widgets and customization it provides. Anyone got some good recommendations for the best sense based ROMs (in their opinion). Screenshots or links would be nice too

I'd recommend CoreDroid
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117841
coredroid for speed... but if you want maximum coolness you need Virtuous Unity http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115333
I'd recommend InsertCoin. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080999) It is Sense 2.1 for speed, but has some Sense 3.0 features such as the lock screen, widgets, wallpapers, etc. I tried Virtuous Unity and found it very sluggish.
Virtuous Unity for Sense 3.0 and Gingerbread
Virtuous 1.0.2 for Sense 2.1 and Froyo
I have not tried Unity yet as I am in love with Virtuous G-Lite at the moment, but I did like Virtuous 1.0.2 when I had that. There are some small bugs with Unity, according to the thread in the dev section, but generally great reviews on it.

Senses blows... battery killer... but if u really want it. I would try virtuos unity
i also do recommend "CoreDroid Vision GB 2.3.3", any roms by siulmagic are better.but if you want fastest sense based rom then 1st shot should be "Desire_Gingerbread_sense 1.0" Unity is good but its bit slower
I'm curently using Unity Sense 3.0 and I haven't found any problems yet, which is good if you want a full Sense 3 (which is really heavy lol) but I find it runs smooth.
I had InsertCoin and have some stuff to help it movefasters, and amazing thems and the extended quick settings which are a plus.
So IncertCoin would be nice if you consider speed and like the themes.
Haven't test CoreDroid yet, but it does looks awesome.

I've used a variety of Sense and Sense-less ROMs, and never noticed a significant difference in battery life, much less anything that would make Sense a "battery killer". Things like radio and screen brightness have much more effect than Sense or no-Sense.
What blows is the stock Android camera app.

[Q] Whats your favorite ROM?

I had my Desire for about a year now, and i tried lots of ROM's all from Sense, AOSP to MIUI,
but haven't could decide me of which one i should choose.
I'm not the biggest fan of miui, it's smooth but it's iphonish...
I like lot of the aosp rom's, because of the 'cleanness' and speed.
Sense looks nice but is a bit slow I think, but thats just my opinion.
Have u any suggestions for either a fast sense rom or anything?
I tried most ROM's here on XDA, but i'm always coming back to Oxygen.
300mb+ free space on NAND after system flash ftw. also speed.
Here's my opinions on the different types of roms. MIUI is iphonish yes but it is AOSP and runs really well. Out of the pure AOSP roms, I prefer CM7. The stuff that has been added to it is awesome. It's smooth, stable (avoid the early releases of CM7). Currently though, I am using AceSMod Lite. I found that this AceSMod is a pretty stable and the best battery life rom out of all the Sense roms. I have pretty much tried all roms except the pure Sense 3 roms.
At the end of the day, it's just best to try out all the roms and see which you like the best. There is no "the best" rom out there. They are all different from each other.
More and more Roms, whether they are sense-based, AOSP or MIUI, become very similar, with the main (marginal) differences lie in :
included or excluded apps (especially for Sense roms important: htc bloatware ftw?)
the activity of the developer (-team)
boot flash
hboot layout
Technically most of them use the same kernel (snq anyone?), the same scripts for a2sd (or forks thereof) and such.
So, as you may have noticed already, in the end it's all up to personal preference. I've been trying a lot of roms myself, and usually end up with GingerVillain again.
Why? I like its clean and light set up, the OTA app for upgrading & mods and because I've been running Richard Trip's Roms when defrost was released.
(with included acknowledgement of the CM7 dev team ofc! )
Regarding sense roms, I used SGBS (sense 2.1) for a while and InsertCoin.
AuraxTremeGinger on Oxygenr2 hboot with LauncherPro is the best by far for me. I have sticked with it the longest period of time after flashing all kinds of stuff. It could be a little smoother as it is based on leak, but the stability is epic. So I have created myself fast, reliable ui with lots and lots of space. In your face aosp

That's what it's all about in the end: personal user experience with a phone, what's beneath it - sense, aosp, miui, whatever - doesn't matter all that much, as long as it works for you.
Another one here running GingerVillain 2.7
Was the first ROM I tried and loved it from the start. I added Launcher Pro to it the other day because the home screens were a bit sticky, and now it's running lightning fast!
Love the fact that it has the CM7 tweaks in it and LP adds even more options.
So glad I rooted my phone.
Personal preference comes down to it does

Totally agree with meaple. Except for the fact about sense roms, have not tried any them very long, because I like the cleanness of aosp roms like oxygen and redux. This is why I stay with oxygen at the moment (redux gets since nearly three months). Seems to be perfect for me. Also tried cm7, but it has too much hacks which I do not need.
The ROM changes all the time on my phone. I like Oxygen, Redux and sometimes Sense ROM with Sense removed (eg using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027804). most of the ROM has one or 2 problems which bugs me.
In the end I find I always go back to my plain stock HTC ROM+rooted+A2SD (and no other hacks). It seems to give me the least amounts of issues.
Im using the latest InsertCoin sense rom (1.0.9) and its very smooth and stable.
I've tried them all from MIUI to the AOSP roms and for me anyway this one feels like the complete package.
My favorites are:
Sense: InsertCoin stable hybrid (2.1 + 3.0)
AOSP: Oxygen
MIUI: none (sorry MIUI fans)
I actually cuite like sense roms, it's just that.. i feel like it uses a lot of power even when it's on standby. That is cuite annoying i think.
Right now i'm using Oxygen though.
no matter what ROM I go to, I always go crying back to cyanogenmod ... it's reliability, performance and general features are unbeatable by anything else.. simply the most awesome ROM available
CM(Nightlies) hands down.
Tried a few sense roms, but I actually hated them.
Even when they are cleaned of most of the bloatware, they still feel overloaded to me.
Haven't tried MIUI so far.
Reflex S 2.1.7. with gingerbread by Neophyte
Been using RCmixS until the recent InsertCoin update(1.0.9).. Two of the best sense ROMs available..

bored with cm7 whats a good sense rom?

Been running cm7.1 for a while and I am thinking of hopping on to a sense rom just wonder what roms you guys recommend. This will be my first time encountering sense so ive heard good and bad things about it but i just need to witness it for my self.
You may try an untouched stock rom or virtous one. But I dont recommend Virtous Unity because sense 3.0 is a resource enemy. Sense luncher always resets itself. Memory Management was awful. And I dont think Desire Z has the ram to run Sense 3. It was unusable for me.
Now I am happy with CyanogenMod.
Virtuous has a bunch of Sense based ROMs. Peruse the Android Development sub-thread for more Sense ROMS. If you don't like Sense then go with MIUI. I don't like Sense so I tried out MIUI and I liked it, but then I went back to Cyanogenmod for it's simplicity and speed.

[Q] Sense or no sense?

Basically I'd like to be persuaded as to whether to use a sense rom (e.g ARHD) or a nosense rom (e.g CM7). And if I use CM7 can I install the HTC dialer and messaging app?
--
Previously I was using ARHD (sense) and go launcher, and I've just updated to the new ARHD with sense 3. As much as I like it, it's not quite as minimalist as I liked with go launcher and my battery life is not as good (sense is a battery hod, no denying).
I'm tempted to go the other way; CM7 with no sense features. What are the advantages of this? Why do some people prefer no sense?
Can I install the sense APKs of the apps I like? The htc dialer is great, as is the messaging/
I can't answer all your questions however I recently went from RCMix3d 1.4 runny to CM7 and I'm loving the change. The battery life is excellent and it makes me wonder why I was using sense in the first place.
I don't even miss it that much, apart from the odd thing. I'll take longer battery life over flashy show off animations any day

No, the HTC apps won't run without the Sense framework.
Beyond that, I'm not going to persuade you with way; the only way to decide is to backup, flash cm7 and see which one you prefer.

I suggest giving MIUI a try. It is basedd om CM7,has great features and is very easy to customise!
Definately take a look at MIUI as well Its an AOSP rom like CM7 but with some very nice additions. If you like to try out different themes and lots of personalization options MIUI is definately the way to go.
But in the end both ways (sense or no sense) have their advantages. What i dont like about sense is that its so bloated up with stuff you rarely ever use. You can cleane some of it with scripts like rom cleaner but still we're talking 350mb rom (sense) vs 80-90mb rom (CM7 or MIUI).
On the other hand with sense you get one good looking theme and good to very good apps for all the features of your phone. On CM7 you might need to find another app to play music via DLNA for example and another app for weather and so on.
sense and see how you feel if you dont like then go for no sense .....simple really
im with sense atm and feel that it is good
you could try the better of both worlds by flashing DeDense from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1207645
Try Helios 0913 for a CM7 rom if you're gonna try one. It'll make you not wanna go back. These forums are crowded with sense roms that look exactly the same and offer nothing different, except some visual stuff, than the other 20 or so sense roms that are here. A good AOSP rom is hard to find on HTC phones now. Like I said though, try Helios or better yet, Hydrogenmod and you'll forget all about sense.

I love Helios too but, more broadly, I went the way of CM7-based ROMs in general + Lord Clockan's amazing kernels and never looked back.
I never enjoyed such a snappy and responsive device when I was on Sense-based ROMs. Ditto battery life. I'm a massive CyanogenMod fanboy now, and will be flashing Nightlies (which are in a very good condition ATM) until Richfish updates Helios.
People on Sense ROMs have good things to report too, though, so my suggestion (which you've probably already heard a million times) is to try stuff out for yourself.
No one will be able to tell you what you would prefer. Test out a CM rom and a sense rom. Make your own mind up.

[Q] Which is the best ROM for DHD?

Hi all,
I am considering having my phone rooted. Which is the best rom for the DHD? I am thinking of latest ICS? Any thoughts? Is it worth it to go to ICS?
Your comments will be highy appreciated.
Many thanks,
MAC
depends what u want all these have big speed improvement from HTC stock, except for the ICS beta's atm.
if u want closest to stock rom use ARHD Sense 3.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840040
if you want the newer sense 3.5 go with RCMIX3D (Runny v4.0)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1261721
if u want an iphone look
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970196
if u want pure android, u can go with the usual cyanogen builds
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=917271
OR install ARHD then flash the no-sense script on the second post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840040
if u want to try Ice cream sandwich roms - !!!theyre a bit buggy atm!!!
These uses "Forced Hardware graphics acceleration" supposedly its the 3d,
i found that my phone ran faster with it unticked. i had it for several days but got
annoyed at the inability to browse internet properly.
LordClockan
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450962
or Virtuous Quattro RC2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1428047
(u need to flash the kernel next to the rom download for Quattro to work wifi properly)
There isnt a really "best" rom its just what you want your phone to look like, Take your pick but ill be sticking to ARHD until ICS is smoother. Tho that doesnt mean i wont try it from time to time
Runny 4.0 is my personal fav.
Matt
Thanks a ton mate. I think I will give Runny 4 a shot!!!
I like Sense (Sense 3.5 sounds good), but I use GO Launcher EX with my own frankentheme. I use Sense Analogue Clock, a bit of HTC DIamond (remember those), Own icons, fully customised app drawer, dock, etc etc. I also use a modified Diamond wallpaper with Live wallpaper - Nexus Revamped Pro (purchased n the Market) - also fully customisable.
I have attached the wallpaper I customised and that I have been using for a long time now.
Runny for sense man...cyan for non sense..then when devs finished...
Ics for non sense
Ics and sense 3.6
Good times
Runny 4.0 is a top quality rom though

Well what I did was I tried almost all the roms from ARHD to Cyanogenmod and I am currently using MIUI ICS and am loving it. So it depends on what your needs are.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda premium
Personal favorites would be cm7 nightly build 260, blackice is fast (there is not much to say for a GUI interface but the rom is nice), or like previously stated Lord Clockan is doing some great work ICS, I have been running that for almost 2 weeks now.
I would say smartdroid is the best, this I am saying after having tried almost all the Roms (but for beta ics roms)on this forum...
If you need all "features" of phone I would say CM7 latest nightly, if not try LC:s ICS rom it's really nice...
