problem connecting as disk drive - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Every time I try to connect my HTC DESIRE to my computer as a disk drive, I have to wait years, then the SENSE UI crashes and reboots itself, then I have to set the connection mode to "disk drive" again, then it takes several more years, and only then it connects.
My android version is 2.2, rooted, and I'm using the original Rom.
Is there any way it could be fixed and my DESIRE will connect as fast as the GALAXY S?

a) could try a different ROM
b) could try android commander rather than connecting as disk drive

Thanks for the help, but I'm using linux so I'm not sure that android commander will work, and I have never replaced the ROM so I'm afraid to brick my phone (or anything else which can go wrong in the process...)
Again, thanks for the help, but is there any safer way (=noobproof)?

Don't be too afraid of flashing rom's, it's pretty simple and there are some great guides for first time flashers.
Plus you could always flash a pretty much stock Sense rom which would make your phone almost identical to the way it is now if your happy as it is.
Not too sure how you could get your phone to connect faster as it is. Not heard of your problem before.

Flashing roms is daunting at first but once you've done one its as ready as pie. You should check out this guide, if you follow the steps you can't go wrong.

Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App

You can use qtadb on Linux
TouchPal-d from my Desire running Supernova Extreme Rom - 450 apps and counting. .

Try different ports on your pc.

Hi
Unprovoked (latest version) tried on the MAC and PC does not root my HTC Desire running Android 2.1. I have tried everything possible and it just does not grant me root access to the phone.
What are my options, what other software can I try, to root the phone, preferably PC based.
Thanks

Good Lord, of course it doesn't. There is no rooting tool known as unprovoked.

Please, describe the problem that you are facing, what steps you have taken, etc.
Don't ask stupid questions (or ask questions stupidly) and expect anyone to be able to have a vision of your problem, diagnose it correctly AND help you solve it.
lol a classic typo, I was provoked using unrevoked hehe I wish I could change the subject title now, and of course meant unrevoked (sorry was too tired after trying it for many many hours) ... i know that many people have had success rooting their phones with this tool.
My phone got stuck in a reboot cycle after using unrevoked on 2.2, so I downgraded to 2.1-update1 and tried unrevoked again but the same problem happened and no root access. Then I took the battery out for a few minutes, powered it back on, and so far it's been stable, i.e. no reboots. This morning I also powered off and back on again and the phone has not rebooted. I just can't understand it.
Moving forward, is there another option, a different tool which I could use which can root Android 2.1.

Yes and selected default connection type to charge only.
Have you installed HtC Sync then removed it? Making sure the drivers are left on?
I tried on both the PC and MAC. The MAC does'nt require messing around with USB drivers.
On the PC, HTC sync was uninstalled with the drivers left installed ( unrevoked modified USB driver ) and then ran unrevoked.
So I now have HBOOT 0.83.0001 and Android 2.1.
I tried unprovoked once more today, and the phone is stuck in a reboot loop.
1.
I take out the battery, and the phone boots and then reboots once i see the multi-coloured HTC background and then goes into that infinite reboot cycle before I can make any changes.
2.
HBOOT is trying to find an image with a name similar to : PB99IMG.ZIP which it can't find so reboots in a loop until the battery in taken out and then returns to 1.

Should I install Android 2.3 on Desire ?

Hey guys ! I am currently using the un-rooted factory made Android 2.2 on my HTC Desire.
Although I have no problem with the platform, the factory OS installs the filesystem (particularly /data) on the phone memory and hence fills up the entire internal memory of the Desire - which isn't much to begin with.
A friend of mine suggested I install a "mod-ed" version of Android 2.2 or 2.3 which will allow me to install it on the memory card. How do I do that ?
Also, do I need to root my Desire in order to install the new OS ?
If you mean what I think you do then yeah, you'll need to root it. I'd recommend thoroughly reading this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
and also you'll be interested in ROMs with A2SD, D2WE or D2EXT - it's worth reading all about those too.
Don't do anything unless you understand what you're doing
Yes make sure you know what your doing befor rooting and installing custom rom
I was the same has you not so long ago, when I first hit the brick wall you have no space left to install apps please un-install
So came to this site full of helpful people and now running GB rom with data2sd with 2gb internal memory with over 100 apps and still 1gb left. so defo go for it.

Thanks for the link. I started the process of rooting the phone, but am stuck already ! I am using unrEVOked 3.3 (on Linux) and get stuck at this
Code:
internal error: installing package failed
The phone is in USB Debugging mode and I've tried both 'charge only' and 'mount as disk drive' for the USB mode.

try deleting some apps to free up some space?
I was new to rooting ,but I followed this awesome guide and been happy since...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
best thing i ever did .
good luck
Yup .. There was a problem with my internal storage. Had only 14MB left in the /data directory. Freed space up to 27MB and it worked just fine.
When rooting, I had to install HTC Sync first plug in phone to run through device installation and then uninstall HTC Sync as I think it conflicts with unrevoked
just got the itch to upgrade my desire, i had a hankering for a nexus phone but I want to wait as the nexus s is not a massive upgrade.
Just rooted and installed oxygen 2.3.4. Took a little getting used to but I love it now, feels like I got a nexus for free. Great think about rooting and then S-offing is you can use a custom internal memory set up.
The locked memory in you phone where android and sense are usually live can be made smaller if you use a custom rom freeing up more space for apps, you can also create an ext4 partition on you memory card to create even more space.
My advice spend a few days reading and watching youtube videos about the procedure.
The custom memory partition confused me for a little while but you have to use the andriod SDK and command prompt to push files to your phone.
Good guide here http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/

I'm in the same boat. I'm constantly low on space on my Desire and, excuse the pun, have had the desire to root my device for a while now. However, I attempted to root my old G1 and it couldn't have gone any worse lol. I ended up being stuck with a G1 on the very first build of Android, so as much as I want to root my Desire, my previous experience tells me I should just leave it well alone.
Obviously this was due to my stupidity and lack of understanding of the root process.

Low on space is quite a good reason for flashing a new rom!
I moved from Froyo to CyanogenMod 7.0.2 and I must admit it's awesome: added S2E to move apps to the ext3 partition of my humble 4GB SD card and now have plenty of space.
Of course rooting and flashing is a risk... especially if you are not really aware of what you are doing: I follow the instructions, close my eyes and hope everything works fine!
Read everything you can.
Also I was told something about doing a NANDROID back-up or something like that, which I did not do, which is bad....or so I was told. Look into that.

Problem:- File/Data Transfer via USB

Ok I have a problem with file transferring on my HTC Desire.
Whenever I use my Desire to transfer files FROM PC to Phone, it will always pop up delay write fail [On my PC] and my phone will start glitching, one time it freezes and will soft-reboot. Also, the file will not be successfully transferred to the phone. The file size shows the same as previous but it's not complete.
Been having a problem with this for awhile.
I have really no idea how to solve this.
Suggestions?
Attempted both normal USB Disk Drive mode & Multi-Mount SD widget. Both will give the same issue.
Current ROM: CM 7.0.3 - using 2.35 based kernel of ManU HAVS-AXI-CFS
PC: Running XP SP3
This problem also occurs while transferring in Recovery.

But it works the 2nd time..?
It's like, the transferring is choppy. Slow and then delay write failed and phone hangs
After that, trying again, it works, sometimes.
But I'll try it now.
Problem ceased to occur now but transfer speed is below par.
On CM7 .3 version
I'm using ManU .35 based kernels, it's still slow.
I'm using Multi Mount app, it's also slow... advice please @[email protected]
is your problem same as mine as per my thread?

[Q] Upgraded to Leedroid v4 and cannot connect to pc

Hi,
I've searched all over and cannot finf an answer to my problem??? I have just upgraded to Leedroid v4 and everything works beautifully except I can no longer connect to my pc. It is recognized in device manager but the phone doesn't come up with splash asking how I want to connect it, and so I can't use it as a disk drive. The phone still charges though? I have tried ticking and unticking the ask and usb debugging options.
I don't really want to flash back to an older rom but if that the only way ill have to, can anybody help please????????/
I'm sorry, there is no way in hell you have searched all over. It's one of the most known bugs in the version 4 beta from Lee. It's on pretty much every page in the dedicated thread.
This is what you do. Either download Auto mount from Market OR change kernel to Unity's or Lord's. Both those kernels have fixed the USB connection problem.
Thanks for that. I searched the term not connecting to pc on this forum and google and didn't realise it was a mounting thing!
Np mate. You are most welcome.
i Too was looking for the same thing. Thanks a lot mate
The kernel was updated by Lee, you can try the new one from his thread (see my sig). New rom version should come this week.

[Q] Problem connecting to PC's

Hi guys, I can no longer connect my phone to a PC.
I've tried two different machines with no job.
I've also tried two different usb cables with no joy
I have upgraded to Leeroids Rom
USB debug is enabled.
The phone is charging when plugged in.
HTC Sync is installed, but I can't use as a disk drive or anything.
When I plugged it into this laptop for the first time, it installed all of the drivers but said
"Android phone - no driver found". So installed HTC sync which said it was installing the usb driver.
I'm totally trumped as device manager seems to think it's connected, but i'm not getting anywhere.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks,
Andy
have you tried with the USB Debug Disabled
Aha, just tried that and it made the PC install new drivers. But still no pop up on the device asking what I want to do. And HTC sync still doesn't find a device.
What rom are you using? I try going to setting connect to pc and un-check ask me every time I connect then set which ever you want as default after you set it up connect to the pc

Cheers mate,
I've tried every option in the list, and restarted both the desire Hd and the laptop.
No result yet
You have to mount the SD.
Sorry I don't know your rom (I'm with MIUI) but just connected the SD the phone is not as a "USB key".
Look in the setting to put your phone in "mass storage" or something like this.
Sure someone with a sense ROM can explain it.
Edit: if you have done the above:
Disconnect the usb from the phone, blow hard on the phone usb connector. It could be just some dust in it
Often happen to me... I mean to my phone!
Just change ur kernel as i said in anotheer topic its because of his keernel.u can download and flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050106

I have both this ROM and this problem. Has it been sorted yet?
Just flash a new kernel.
LeeDroid v4 ROM's packaged kernel had this problem of not detecting the USB connection. Try any other Sense kernel like LordMod's, Unity, RCMix or whichever one gets you better performance.
