Just thought I would make a new thread on here so someone could help. I have searched for HOURS trying to find a why and even tried combining some methods with the same end result. :-( Surely between us... "the world wide web" we can find a way. I'm not a genius but I learn very quickly. Any help is greatly appreciated. So far it says it can't be done, but I have faith that we are better than that. So what do you think?
My desire has the updated android 2.2 with the new hboot 1.06 not rooted and s-on.
hi there,
head over to http://revolutionary.io/ and s-off your device, (make sure you have USB debugging selected in settings on your phone, and when asking for your beta key select: Desire CDMA, and select your 1.06 hboot), then download the superuser from http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and flash that in recovery
if you need any help pm me
I have tried that. One of the requirements is that it must be rooted. I can not root my phone using Revolutionary because it is not supported yet. You can S-off the desire Hboot 1.06 but I cannot find ways to root and you must be rooted before you s-off to my knowledge. Please correct me if I am wrong. I will try again though. Thank you.
Unrevoked 3 runes through everything PERFECT until the very end. It says Desire was a TRIUMPH and under that then states "internal error nand root?" I just want to root this so i can flash and install cyanogen 7.
Your device does not need to be rooted to run revolutionary, and it is supported I checked

When I do that it gets stuck at waiting for fast boot.......
done.. had to do it a bit tricky but good to go now. fully rooted with s-off running cyanogen 7.0.3

Hello there xda-devs!!
I own an htc desire A8181 (amoled i think) and i fell into the temptation to root it. The problem is that i updated OTA into 2.2 froyo and my hboot now is 0.93.00001 on which the unrevoked method wont work (at leat for me it did not, as it showed : "validation error: backup cid is missing" ). I have installed the modified drivers and my desire is unbranded. I was hoping to find a method to root without losing any data or settings and since everyone showed as an alternative hboot downgrade and custom rom, so i thought " what if i downgraded hboot but i did not flash a new rom ", but the question is "is it possible?"
As you may have figured out, i dont know much about rooting/flashing etc, although i have some experience from flashing kaiser and some others, but i am willing to learn. If anyone could give me a hint/link/suggestion or solution to my problem it would be gratefully appreciated
PS thank you in advance and sorry for my english

AFAIK, the latest unrevoked works fine with the 0.93.00001 - quite sure I read this in one of the threads.

Thanks for the quick response! Actually these posts were the first that i read when i first thought of rooting and i believe that i have correctly followed the steps of the how to for the unrevoked (version 3.22 straight from the unrevoked site) and i tried twice on different computers(both running win xp home x86). As for the alternatives on benko's tut, none of them supports OTA 2.2 froyo...
After thought and some reading, I decided that I will downgrade to 2.1, root using unrevoked and then flash to prerooted froyo. Actually, since the point is not to lose settings or data, does anyone know a safe way to back up everything and restore them to the new rom?
I have the same model as you mate and the latest unrevoked worked for me, I downloaded the one straight from their website.

Had you also updated OTA with froyo? If yes then why doesn't it work for me? I am sure that the phone is unbranded. Maybe it's something else and not hboot? My current specs are:
*Hboot:: 0.93.001
*Radio: 5.11.05.27
*Rom: 9.29.405.2 (got the update a week ago)
The only thing that I did not follow in the unrevoked guide, was that I didn't select hboot while loading the drivers, because I could not, no matter how many times I pressed the volume down button.I just waited for it to change to usb plug. Could that be the problem?

Something else I noticed the first time I tried with unrevoked, was that in the revoked window it showed "triumph" for a moment and then it rebooted for the last time and then it showed "validation error..". Strange is that it never showed it again not even on the 2nd or 3rd try...What could that mean?

Thanks for the tip, but this is about BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON while my desire is PVT1 SHIP S-OFF and it says that these are able to root but not flash a Rom, while I can't even root.. and the errors do not match..

If you're S-OFF now then you don't need to root - if anything you might be already!
As you hadn't said anything about the rest of the HBOOT I thought I'd mention it but I'm on 0.93 and can root with no issues
And what does it mean? I am already root and I don't know it? And why does then the unrevoked method not work and where is the superuser app?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If the Superuser app isn't there then you're not rooted, so that clears that up...
Go read the S-OFF thread in Development and post a query on there. It sounds like you may have a facotry unlocked bootloader which is extremely rare but best go and confirm it in the forum
Ok. I'm going now. Thank you Eddy and the others for your great help
*forgot to mention: the s off I wrote was after the failed tries with unrevoked(before I hadn't noticed if it was on or off) also the phone was destined to be a demo in a store*

try installing the HTC sync drivers and then remove HTC sync and try again.
If possible switch to Ubuntu and root, its much better.
I have already installed the HTC sync drivers and removed the HTC sync, but I will try reinstalling..You think that through Linux it might succeed?

Hi I recently tried using unrevoked 3.22 and it really didnt seem to work as I got a "validation error: backup cid is mising". However after a reboot I found myself in clockworkmod recovery, so that part seemed to work. However straight afterwards I tried to start the phone, I discovered had no access to SD card and any attempt to access phone via USB also gone, it seems Bluetooth is also gone. However I got the SD card back again using FASTBOOT, has anyone got any ideas how I could possibly get USB back?
Hello cletus. I may not know the solution to your problem, but usually posting some further info about your device(HBOOT, radio etc) and the exact steps you made before that problem, might help someone that would like to help
I really hope that you find a solution to your problem

Hey there! Found a solution: usb brick fix guide
I have rooted my DHD using unrevoked3. I have super user permissions app, and clockwork mod recovery. Then I read that you can't install a custom rom without S-OFF. Do I still need to do the Visionary+ w/DHD eng script?
I thought my DHD still had S-ON but now I don't think I could have clockwork without it being off.... I'm confused.
Anyways I did go ahead and attempt the Visionary+, but perm root doesn't seem to do anything. I could probably skip that step I guess. The DHD script complains about busybox not being installed which is probably done during the perm root of visionary. I then installed Titanium Backup and did the check errors function and installed busybox. It said it installed, but terminal emulator still complains about busybox.
Confused. Can anyone help me?

btw if you have rooted using unrevoked and have clockwork mod installed, you dont need to s-off to flash a rom, you already have write acess to the nand in recovery
How did you do that using unrevoked on DHD?
or you remove nandlock only with unrevoked and root with visonary ?
Something isn't right here. It isn't possible to root dhd with unrevoked

Someone Swyped my idea.
Further information on Unrevoked & DHD
I seem to be having the same problem as the OP.
A bit of background: I just upgraded from my HTC Hero, and had some experience of rooting and installing custom ROMS on that device. My first job when I got my new HTC Desire HD was to get it rooted so I could get all Orange's crap off of it and have a streamlined new phone.
However, in my haste, I used Unrevoked, failing to notice the difference between a bog-standard HTC Desire and the newer HTC Desire HD. The upshot: Unrevoked *did* succeed in rooting my phone and installing ClockworkMod Recovery, but now the recovery partition thinks it's an old-fashioned HTC Desire and so won't install DHD ROMS. I can install bog-standard Desire ROMS to my heart's content.
So, I'm in a bit of a mess. I want to install a DHD ROM on my DHD, but I can't. Also, now that I've already gone through one rooting process, the standard procedure doesn't work, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed. Any advice would be appreciated. Should I:
- try to get the phone back to its unrooted condition as it was when it came out of the box (in which case how do I do that?)
- flash a different recovery partition in the hopes that I can get it to recognise that my phone's a DHD and not an old standard Desire?
- fiddle about with the ROMs to get them to bypass the device checks (in which case how do I do that?)
Any other suggestions, let me know. It's possible I may have stumbled on a new method for rooting a DHD...
To fix it, just flash 1.32.405.6 RUU.
But I have to say, that is not possible
Desire ROMs on DHD, without S-OFF, everything is just simply wrong. Are you even sure that you have a Desire HD? Please send me a picture of your Desire HD running some Desire ROM.
oops
OK, it appears that there's a much simpler solution. Orange appear to have sent me the wrong phone.
Sigh...
Hahhahhah, good job Orange

ok, so to Orange's credit, I've sent back the wrong phone, and they've sent me the right one, next day delivery, having knocked 40% off the original price. Looking forward to playing with it this evening - I won't be touching Unrevoked with a barge-pole!
thanks @jkoljo for alerting me to the possibility that I might have been sent the wrong thing!
we get there in the end...
Very nice, good luck with your new phone

Installing eng hboot is not needed if you want to root but it is a good idea to have because
it will let you use fastboot commands ,lets say for any reason your recovery fail, you will
have the option to recover your phone through fastboot ,also you will need it if you want
to try different radios. However, if you want to install eng hboot ,you must be very carefull
when doing so otherwise you could brick your phone. make sure you follow every step and make sure that you are installing the the right one .(g2 and desire z have specific hboots).
wait, is it more likely that you will brick your phone if you use engineering hboot? also one last question. i just want to root my phone to install the virtuous unity rom onto my phone and use a fast kernal to allow me to overclock only to 1.3ghz. i dont be doing much else modding on my phone. should i still install hboot eveim if im doing very little?

since you live in canada i assume you have a desire z not a g2 so you do not have to change your hboot for unity ,i didnt say you are more likely to brick your phone if you install eng hboot ,i said it is a good idea to install eng hboot so if for any reason your recovery fails you will have
an option to use fastboot and fix your phone, and then i said be very carefull when installing hboot and make sure you install the right hboot because g2 and desire z partition sizes are different so make sure if you have a desire z you are installing the one for desire z not the one that is for the g2. and make sure you type in the commands exactly like it said in the wiki .
(also seems like the wiki has changed since i was doing this, because i remember installing eng hboot was marked
as optional in the wiki before but now everything is different so you might actually need the eng boot now, i am not %100 sure i would wait for someone else to confirm what i said.)
Thanks for your help, i successfully rooted my htc desire z
@evilcuber May I use your thread to ask an additional question regarding hboot ?
I rooted my French DZ some times ago, I followed a tutorial from cyanogenmod wiki, most probably this one (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting) but I do not remember flashing an engineering hboot.
As I would like to install Unity, I have to check my phone runs the right hboot. Here is the information I have :
Thanks for your help !
I think that as long as you have a DZ and not a G2, your hboot should be fine
Hi peeps, just got through a saga of rooting/flashing my Desire HD, so turned my attention to what I thought was the easier task of rooting a Wildfire.
I've installed/uninstalled HTC-Sync , I've installed the hacked USB andriod drivers, I've set the phone up ready in USB root debugging mode etc....
...but when running unrevoked it seems to go through the motions correctly ...but it never completes. The phone just reboots very slowly and the unrevoked app just sits hanging there saying 'its safe to restart if this doesn't work'.
But when I do my little test of running titanium back-up, no root access given :-(
are there any alternative methods to root which don't involve unrevoked. Such as creating a goldcard like with my DHD?
You need to get s-off with revolutionary, take a look at the reference guide(It's sticky). Sry I can't link it coz I'm on my phone

does this draw anyone close to understanding what wrong?
Hey mate.. I hope these links below help you out because I spent countless hours searching all over the place just to need these 2 links..

Hi all,
I want to say, that I've read many of articles/tutorials of what I'm trying to do. Anyway I'm trying to install Cyanogene mod (ROM ? ) to my HTC Wildfire. I've downgrade it before from Froyo to Eclair (for some reasons ). I was trying to root it with Unrevoked but it doesn't work. I also try Revolutionary but it doesn't work too ! Anyway I'm trying to install ClockWorkMod Recovery now . I've install it via ROM manager, but it doesn't work (seems it's installed but stock recovery is enabled ). My HBoot version is : 1.01.0001 . S-ON (I think S-OFF should help but I don't know how to disabled it ). I'm getting crazy with this.
Please help me anyone.
Greetings.
Unrevoked will not help u and it is necessary to s-off ur mobile...
What exact procedure u adopted for using revolutionary?

unrevoked
Thx for reply.
I know that I should have s-off before I use unrevoked but I can't figure out with it. I ran unrevoked and also revolutionary on two platforms : Linux and Windows xp. I just enabled usb debugging in my htc and then pluged in phone, and then ran unrevoked/revolutionary as root.
Anyway is there only hardware method to gain s-off on wildfires ?
Greetings
Go to revolutionary.io or just Google it....download window platform file and fill up the form...do it cautiously while entering ur mobile serial no. Which can be found on the mobile box....copy the no. Generated...it is alphanumeric known as beta key...now plug ur mobile to window pc debugging mode on of ur mobile....run revolutionary and when ask enter beta key cautiously not mixing letter o with number zero...press enter u will have s-off...many user had get s-off with multiple time use of software

Dude you have to get S-OFF using Revolutionary or get S-OFF using an XTC Clip hardware box. If you don't, no matter how many variations or versions of Unrevoked you try, you will ALWAYS get an error.

Yea, but revolutionary doesn't work and I can't figure out why. I heard about xtc clips, but it's expensive tool. Anyway how you 3xeno get s-off ?
Greets
I got via Revolutionary. And if you put proper details, it may be possible for members here to help you. You know, simply saying "It doesn't work" doesn't enable anyone to help you in anyway. There can be 1001 reasons why something doesn't work.
Ok, so what info do you need ?
Here is some details which I know :
HBoot version : 1.01.0001
Android : Eclair 2.1 (downgraded from Froyo 2.2)
Phone : HTC Wildfire (Buzz)
I think that's all info about my phone. Anyway I tried to use revolutionary from 2 different PC's on Linux and also on Windows (Win 7 and XP , Linux was Ubuntu jaunty jackalope and natty narhwal ). I'm getting following error an every time : "Failed to get root ;< " , on every try.
Post everything you get on the Revolutionary Screen. From the start to the end, for a beginning. "Failed to get root" on Revolutionary? It still sounds like you are using Unrevoked.
i can be silly at this point and sorry for that bt did u installed android windows driver before running revolutionary???
Ankurcul : yes of course
Anyway I finally get S-OFF with Revolutionary tool whitch is realy working
I shouldn't downgrade my android to 2.1 - that's the point. That's revolutionary couldn't take s-off. I've upgraded it to 2.2 (Froyo) again and revolutionary works pretty nice
I've also installed cwm recovery , and I'm going to install cyanogene .
Thank you all for helping me
Nb : I've got help on revolutionary irc.
k...just hit thank button if u really found me helpful lol...
Of course I've installed them
Anyway I finally get S-OFF with Revolutionary tool. I get help from Revolutionary team on their irc . I want to thank you all for interestig in my problem and for helping
