Help re-rooting please?? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had to bring my phone in to have it repaired. So I took the root off it, I originally rooted it using the revolutionary method, worked like a champ, but I no longer have my laptop, I have a desktop now, and I can't get it to go past the waiting for device screen, idk what's going on with it, I've read through every page n tried everything that was mentioned. The only thing I can think of is my old laptop was Windows 7, but the computer I have now is Windows Vista, I downloaded and installed both the HTC drivers and the root program but something still isn't working properly...help please??

Did you enable USB Debugging under Settings /Applications? Also, I hope you do not have HTC sync installed on your computer.

Usb debugging is enabled, and HTC sync isn't even installed on my computer. I followed literally all the steps and still hanging on waiting for device. Could it be I'm on windows Vista and not 7?

I rooted my boyfriend's Thunderbolt with Revolutionary recently and it did the same thing. I rebooted both the computer and the phone and it worked.
Also be sure that fastboot is disabled.
What hboot version do you have? If you unrooted and have hboot 6.17, you'll have to get back to 2.16 by running an RUU. 6.17 makes Revolutionary think that you have s-off. If that's the case, do that first. It shouldn't cause the problem, but it's one less thing to worry about later.
Sent from my Evo + MIUI using Tapatalk!

Yeah I'm on 2.16. I've tried rebooting both phone and computer n its still a no go. So I'm just gonna try it on a friends laptop that has windows 7. If it works then its gotta be Windows related.

Hboot .83 + unrevoked3 = pita

Ok guys so.I'm trying to root my desire with .83 hboot using unrevoked because from what I read it works but it doesn't.
I get either " waiting for reboot " or "connect your phone..." am I right to assume I don't need a goldcard? My.networks orange uk
Is there any other method of.rooting .83? Except for unrevoked?

Three other root methods (at least)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
yeah, most guides state if you get stuck there to make sure the hboot/recovery drivers are installed.
Rooting my .83 was a breeze, i coulda done it on my head.
Do some reading on how to root an orange phone. HBoot 0.83 is easy as pie, Orange=PITA. At least that's what I have picked up from these forums, and as far as I know you need a goldcard.
Always make sure you read more than you need to before starting to change such an expensive piece of kit. Seems you missed some steps.
Well. I've made sure the drivers are installed. I even tried it with a Linux live cd.
My.question was is there any alternatives? All the tuts point to revoked.
No need to be a prick about it. All I asked was for help
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
unrevoked works best on a mac or linux machine, windows can have driver issues.
You have USB debugging turned on right? And drivers for HTC sync and for android devices you need to browse to when you connect it? Are you running as an admin?
Turns out I was wrong, people have rooted Orange handsets without a goldcard.
The reason your getting responses that sound like pricks is because all the info is there, people don't want to find it for you.
Second time I've posted this today (no I'm not advertising) search for Root My Droid they have a good step by step guide for rooting the Desire. Unrevoked definately works on Orange as I did it yesterday following the guide they have.
Make sure you have the options to install applications from unknown sources, debugging on and the default connection type as disk drive.
Thanks for the help. Ill try and give it another try. I've rooted 3 desires fine but this is my first .83. That's all. I did enough searches for .83 roots on google. Most of the other root methods were talking about .75 and .80.
Ill uninstall everything and try again with unrevoked.

I had hboot 0.83 and rooted it from my Ubuntu laptop with unrevoked without any problems. Easiest root I've ever done.
i dont have a hboot 83 but i did help a friend do his telus hb83
the guides i read up on stated getting sdk for the drivers and all sorts of other stuff
i didnt.
what i told my friend in short .missing from the guides.
install htc sync then remove the sync leave the drivers part.
download unrevoked and extract the refresh rar/zip.find and run the hboot html found inside and follow the instructions to install the hboot drivers.
Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to have another go at using Linux unrevoked since I think my windows 7 is probably playing up.
Again. Thanks for the help.

Windows not seeing your device will not affect the S-Off procedure. Alpharev runs on the linux kernel, and I can 100% guarantee it will recognize your phone.

Still doesn't matter, that just means windows doesn't have the drivers. S-off is a bootable disk, which has any drivers necessary preloaded into it. Its a separate operating system/environment.

Need some question now..
I am rooted and have clockwork..
should I re-install clockwork with S-OFF?
also
if my phone crashes during s-off fastboot phase will it brick my phone
When running the S-OFF tool, it will ask if you want to install clockwork (again), there's no harm in telling it to do so.
As for bricking... yes, it is always possible that your phone can be bricked.

It will only brick your phone during the spl/hboot dump and write phase.

I have S-OFF and rooted, and try the CM7 nightly (try #18 and #19) and also have wifi problems (connect to router but not able to get to internet). Do you say you have a way to fix it? I try the "push new driver" method as in CM6.1.1 but it failed.

[Q] Unrevoked "waiting for device"

Hello everybody, I'm here because I need help..
My HTC desire refuse to be rooted : when I plug it on my PC (Win7-Pro) Unrev0ked (3.32 & 3.31) always says "waiting for device [...]".
I installed HBoot drivers, didn't installed HTCSync, checked debugging usb on, set the phone on "charge only" and have +20mb of free space on rom.
My phone in reconnized as "ABD" in device manager.
Phone specs :
Code:
Version d'Android : 2.2
Version de bande de bade : 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Version du noyau :2.6.32.15-gf5a401c
Numéro de build : 2.29.405.5 CL293415 release-keys
Numéro logiciel : 2.29.405.5

So, what did I forget, and what should I do?
Thank
PS : I'm French, so sorry for my non-perfect english

I have tried on 3 pc (one on xp, one on 7 and mine ) but no results
Try unrevoked 3.21 and also HTC Sync is needed for the drivers, but after installing, you should uninstall it.
Omg thank-you , i'll try this tomorrow !!!
It works (in usb2 no but on usb3 yes : why?) I flashed a gingerbread rom (oxygen) and it works perfectly !!!
Similar problem
I have a similar issue.
I have the Hboot driver installed, running Win7 Pro 64-bit (also tried on win xp), disabled anti-virus, installed HTC sync and removed it (this didn't work), installed HTC sync and cancelled the installation after the drivers etc were installed and before HTC Sync proper was installed (this didn't work either).
The phone was rooted and went in for a screen replacement to my non-network warranty repair (bank insurance) and they sent it back restored to factory and what appears to be OTA updated.
In Hboot I have the following displayed:
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.11.05.27
Aug 10 2010.17:52:18
I always just end up with "Waiting for device" in unrevoked 3.32. Any suggestions or what am I doing wrong? I have read thru quite a few similar posts and tried just about every combination of suggestions I could ind to no joy. I have to be doing something simple wrong, but for the life of me I can't figure out what.
after installing htc sync and connecting your phone to your pc, doesnt it acknowledge you phone is connected?
Unrevoked never worked for me, I tried everything to the point of going crazy. So I used alpharevx and now I'm running custom 2.3.3 ROM with sense 2.1. Very easy, and fast. It gives you S-off too.
The way I read it, I was to install the app and drivers, then immediately uninstall the app. I have never actually synced my phone to my pc. Although when I reboot the phone into hboot the pc device manager recognises the phone as an android device.
Am I supposed to install htc sync, sync the phone and THEN uninstall it?
Yes, but only the software, you need the drivers for unrevoked.

Also try an earlier version of unrevoked like 3.2x instead of 3.32

Ok, it must have been Win7(64-bit). I tried it on the wife's Vista laptop and it worked. So now running Cyanogenmod7.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Good stuff.. enjoy

Win 7 x64 works fine for me. In my case the problem was solved by installing HTC Sync, and de-installing (leave the drivers).
Instead of rooting through unrevoked (if you can't), S-OFF your phone using alpharev, fastboot flash recovery and then backup your original ROM, and install the ROM you want.
Good luck.

Latest unrevoked and white evo

Myself and my wife both had black evos from launch day. I recently got the nexus 4g and she came back to the evo after trying the arrive. But this time she got a white evo with 3.70.651.1 with either hboot 2.02 or 2.10 I can't remember. But I could have sworn latest unrevoked worked with this. But at the end it says root failed is your firmware to new? what am I doing wrong now that I wasn't before? I know my replacement evo had 3.70.651.1 and hboot 2.02 and it rooted...
Any help would be great thanks guys
Go into the bootloader, select clear storage [factory reset]. Boot into the phone, enable usb debugging, make sure htc was installed at one point, removed when using unrevoked, install the hboot drivers, then run unrevoked.
I've done all that. If im not mistaking once you install hboot drivers once which I did in past then it should still work on any evo I root. USB debugging is on, it just says firmware to new root failed at the end. Is hboot 2.10 rootable with unrevoked?

She is going to have to get an older PC36IMG and let it downgrade in hboot. I have one that works but I am not on my computer that has it right now. I know there is a website you can find them one (the name slips my mind but I think it is like shipped roms or something?) Just get one of the older versions, update, and see if unrevoked works. (Just don't let the phone update before you run unrevoked.)

Just rooted two Evo's in the past week with no problems and they had all the updated firmware and software. Make sure you are using the latest Unrevoked software and try it on a Mac or Win7 machine. I get less errors on either one of them. Win7 make sure you load the drivers like previously mentioned

Just run unrevoked again , it will work it just sometimes takes 2 or 3 times. Trust me I've used it over 100 times and I get firmware to new about a quarter of the time.

Reinstall the hboot drivers and make sure htc sync is uninstalled as it will interfere with adb commands. 2.10 is rootable, all evos at this time are rootable.
also dont forget apps like wheres my droid, lookout, antivirus mess with root process, also your computers antivirus will need to be turned off, because the root exploit is recognized as virus.
when you run the unrevoked file if on pc right click and run as administrator
