Windows not seeing your device will not affect the S-Off procedure. Alpharev runs on the linux kernel, and I can 100% guarantee it will recognize your phone.

it's not that its not seeing it.. it's not installing the drivers or.. letting me even adp my phone

Still doesn't matter, that just means windows doesn't have the drivers. S-off is a bootable disk, which has any drivers necessary preloaded into it. Its a separate operating system/environment.

Need some question now..
I am rooted and have clockwork..
should I re-install clockwork with S-OFF?
also
if my phone crashes during s-off fastboot phase will it brick my phone

When running the S-OFF tool, it will ask if you want to install clockwork (again), there's no harm in telling it to do so.
As for bricking... yes, it is always possible that your phone can be bricked.

It will only brick your phone during the spl/hboot dump and write phase.

I have S-OFF and rooted, and try the CM7 nightly (try #18 and #19) and also have wifi problems (connect to router but not able to get to internet). Do you say you have a way to fix it? I try the "push new driver" method as in CM6.1.1 but it failed.

This is how I root my phone awhile back. There are others out there, but I found this one first and did the step-by-step and got my EVO rooted. Simple

So how far did Unrevoked get? You said it shows S Off in your bootloader? When I used unrevoked on my girl's phone, I got that error saying incompatible radio version, but everything else in the program ran fine, and it still said it was a triumph. It still installed clockwork recovery, and it was funtioning. So I flashed Unrevoked S Off tool, and all was fine. I then flashed Amon Ra recovery, and there have been 0 issues with her phone so far. I've flashed a couple different roms for her without issue. So did you experience something similar? Did Unrevoked install Clockwork recovery for you? What happens when you select recovery from the bootloader? And is your hboot indeed S off?
EDIT: If you do indeed want to update your radios, here is the link to calkulins radio page : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
You do need to have S off to flash a radio, and you would need a custom recovery. So if you have those two things, then you can flash your radios. You flash them like a ROM, from recovery. You will see a few different/unusual screens while they are flashing, don't freak out. It takes a while for them to flash sometimes too, so be patient while they are flashing, and dont pull the battery, that's how a brick is made. And be sure to have a substantial amount of battery prior. PM me if you have further questions.
There is a link in my thread that should help get you going. If you have S-OFF it is simple to flash a rooted ROM
If your phone shows s off then its rooted
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
When i do the Recovery, i get a black screen with the phone in the middle and a red Triangle Exclamation thing.. and it just stays there till i pull the battery.
Are you sure you have the latest Unrevoked 3.32? Make sure you download from here Unrevoked 3.32 I used that to root my Evo and I have the same radio as you and it worked flawlessly. What OS are you using Win7? Mac? XP? Vista? Unrevoked 3.32 should work. If you can't get it to work try this: Root the Evo. If you follow that guide you will have full root. I have used it several times and it has never failed me. Good luck my friend.
You don't have a custom recovery yet. When you boot into bootloader(press volume down and power) what is at the top of the screen?
Sorry I do not have the same radio as you. Mine is different so use the second link in my post to root your phone. It takes longer but is a sure fire way to get it rooted and get you to flashing custom Rom's. Plus it comes with AmonRA 2.2.1 recovery which is better than Clockwork in my opinion.

[Q] Unrevoked and z4 mod/root

Has anyone used Z4 Mod/Root to root your evo? Does it work?
On unrevoked, do I just go to the website and click the link via the phone and is that all? Or is there more to it?
Also which is best, the unrevoked3 or the forever one?
Doing this for a friend, my evo was already rooted when I bought it (would have done it myself, but it was cheaper then a stock non-rooted one, so why not lol)
Z4 is a temporary root only and will not allow you to flash any custom ROMs. You need to do it every time you reboot your phone. It can be used to run some root apps like wifi tether but that's it.
Unrevoked 3 is a full root, and includes Unrevoked Forever so both are not needed. It is very easy to do but not as simple as clicking a link on your phone. It runs on your pc. Here is the easy guide for Unrevoked.

As far as I know, no.
As I only need root for occasional wifi tether,
I use z4root,
which a long as I don't turn off my phone or run out the battery, by accident,
but after having powered off my phone on seperate instances,
z4root had difficulty temp-rooting,
it works, but not every time
considering Unrevoked
So I dload the unrevoked file, change hboot driver, restart phone, open unevoked file and thats all?
You need to install and then uninstall HTC sync first. Everything you need to do can be found in that link I posted.

I don't have htc sync.
I'm running Ubuntu, do I still need to do the hboot driver thing?
Or how do I do it running linux?
I will pp a couple bucks if someone can pm me how to do this running ubuntu/linux.
I think with Linux you just download the Linux version and run it. Go to www.unrevoked.com, click on the EVO, click Unrevoked3 and then click the Linux download.

Yep, should be. There will be on screen instructions telling you what to do/whats happening.
If you need HTC sync, mount your sd to your compy and check the sd card. There is the HTC sync exe on there and you can run it. Then un-install it.

Latest unrevoked and white evo

Myself and my wife both had black evos from launch day. I recently got the nexus 4g and she came back to the evo after trying the arrive. But this time she got a white evo with 3.70.651.1 with either hboot 2.02 or 2.10 I can't remember. But I could have sworn latest unrevoked worked with this. But at the end it says root failed is your firmware to new? what am I doing wrong now that I wasn't before? I know my replacement evo had 3.70.651.1 and hboot 2.02 and it rooted...
Any help would be great thanks guys
Go into the bootloader, select clear storage [factory reset]. Boot into the phone, enable usb debugging, make sure htc was installed at one point, removed when using unrevoked, install the hboot drivers, then run unrevoked.
I've done all that. If im not mistaking once you install hboot drivers once which I did in past then it should still work on any evo I root. USB debugging is on, it just says firmware to new root failed at the end. Is hboot 2.10 rootable with unrevoked?

She is going to have to get an older PC36IMG and let it downgrade in hboot. I have one that works but I am not on my computer that has it right now. I know there is a website you can find them one (the name slips my mind but I think it is like shipped roms or something?) Just get one of the older versions, update, and see if unrevoked works. (Just don't let the phone update before you run unrevoked.)

Just rooted two Evo's in the past week with no problems and they had all the updated firmware and software. Make sure you are using the latest Unrevoked software and try it on a Mac or Win7 machine. I get less errors on either one of them. Win7 make sure you load the drivers like previously mentioned

Reinstall the hboot drivers and make sure htc sync is uninstalled as it will interfere with adb commands. 2.10 is rootable, all evos at this time are rootable.
also dont forget apps like wheres my droid, lookout, antivirus mess with root process, also your computers antivirus will need to be turned off, because the root exploit is recognized as virus.
when you run the unrevoked file if on pc right click and run as administrator

[Q] How to root HTC Evo 4G on 2.3.4??

Ok so I've been looking around and can't seem to find really good answers to my questions. First of all I'm wanting to root a Japanese HTC Evo 4G on version 2.3.4 Hboot 2.15. The only way I can really find how to do this is to go through HTCdev and do a bootloader unlock. Now my problem with that is that it says it will wipe all personal information on the phone during this process, which I don't want to have to go through and re-input everything again. All posts I find on this are pretty old and don't seem to apply atm. So I guess basically I have a couple questions. Can you back up this info so that you don't have to back through and manually re-input it all?? Is it safe and good to do for my phone? I'm fairly familiar with the root process as I had an HTC Evo 4G before that I rooted but ended up losing that phone and had to get a new one, that being said it was my first root ever done. Also if anybody knows of roms that work great with the AU mail service?? I had flashed a couple of roms before and couldn't get that service back on the phone no matter what I tried so stayed rooted with just stock rom. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated and links and such. Thank you
Also I should mention that I don't understand or speak enough japanese to actually feel comfortable following a japanese youtube video on how to do this. I watched 1 and understood most of what he was saying but just not comfortable enough to use it as a guide.
Use the Revolutionary tool to root your phone http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
Hmm nope doesn't work. I keep getting Failed to get Root! Not sure what else to do after I punch in the beta key and hit enter it just sits at Zerging Root for about 30 secs then pops that up. Also it appears that maybe the HTCdriver is not working properly? When I look at the drivers from my computer for the phone it says 2.0.7.6 and when I click on the HTCdriver 3.0.0.007 nothing really happens except for asking for permission to run and then I hit run and that's it.
So here's a question now. I see I can delete the driver for this. Should I, then try to run HTCdriver 3.0.0.007?? Not sure what else to do atm.
Try uninstalling the driver and install them with this http://dl3.htc.com/application/sync/htc_sync_3.0.5617_us.exe
Then try using the revolutionary tool

You don't by chance have a PC36IMG file on your SD card, do you? I saw where this was causing some issues for others, particularly when the phone reboots to the bootloader. Delete the file if it's there, rename it or move it off the root of your SD card.
Also, make sure you have USB debugging enabled on your phone, and any antivirus software on your computer turned off. I've used Revolutionary to root & S-off 4 different OG EVO's and I've only had an issue once, and it was due to HTC Sync being installed on my laptop (Revolutionary would open and then immediately close).
