Official gingerbread isn't really ever coming to Epic 4G, is it? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

At least, I'm beginning to get that idea....
Sent from my SPH-D700

well some rumors say its coming soon
and some ppl say that on the sprint website it says that epic 4g ships with android 2.3
but i just got a replacement phone right now and it was 2.2
so im not sure but maybe it will be here one day hopefully soon.

OMG! It took this long to get Froyo from when it was released in Europe! Relax people! Let them get it right. People are still buying Epics which means 22 months for them on this phone from now. We have had 2 major upgrades in a year! Lots of apps coming out for GB only which equals money for Google which means pressure to get phones that are capable on GB. I have been on GB since May. It makes you wish Samsung never announced the upgrade and just did it when it was ready so al these kids in the back can stop saying "are we there yet?"

All i gotta say is , WTF to Casio Gzone Commando phone getting Gingerbread before the Samsung Epic 4g. lol I mean seriously.. haha I just think thats awesome. However though i am ok with my froyo roms for now.

Here is a list of the phones that got Gingerbread out of the 10's of thousands out there and the ones that will get it. Of course ignore HTC phones since people said their GB made the phone unuseable.

Patience is something we must all have with the epic

HTC seems to have the best update schedule, but I love the Samsung screens. Galaxy Nexus will probably be my next phone though, best of both worlds.

True, for the average user, the early upgrade bugs are bad. I'll wait for others to update and complain and go from there, dive in myself and figure it out that way, or just run a rom.

Who is Ditching Their Epic For a Nexus S?

who's going to be ditching their epic for a nexus s?
I will. Not because the epic is a bad phone. But the nexus s whill have much more support and receive updates faster most likely. And the pure google experience is a def factor
Not me, just hope that we can use some of google updates it gets on our epics
To me its like a downgrade, yes its pure google, but i like my epic hardware i have bragging rights over a lot of my friends which have any other variant of galaxy s phone
Will be cool tho if we can port some stuff over like latest versions of android and 4g support easier for cm7, and other good stuff.
Also dual core phones will be out soon, and it will be outdated..
i will be changed my mind after i talked to my homies in the irc made me realize how sweet it would be...
CM7 on day one ???
Yea ill take that....
I'm seriously considering it because i've always just tolerated but never really wanted a slider phone.
i've always wanted the slate experience.
Not me; I'll stick with my two-year plan for now. I'm sure there will be better phones by end of next year anyway, even if the Nexus S is a great phone.
I'll be switching to a thunderbolt this week. I watched my friend hit over 12mb/second download while I was under 1/2mb/sec...
No thanks, lol.

epic has gingerbread (CM7). i think that if we give it time, epic users will see some bad ass roms being developed. and who knows, since the nexus and epic share the same specs, porting could be kinda easy (im assuming. idk, im not a developer).

Ics coming next month?

Yesterday, during an Android gathering in LA, LA Gadgets Examiner confirmed with an Android insider that Google, HTC
and Samsung are doing everything they can to bring Android 4.0 to their smartphones. The EVO 3D and Galaxy S II were
specifically mentioned as scheduled to receive the update sometime next month.<===from talkandroid

It may be released next month by Google. But the US carriers are going to take a couple months to get them to us, the consumer.
For example, Samsung already gave Sprint the update for our phones beginning of October, but we won't be getting it until December.

I bet if that update was for the IPhone Sprint would have rolled it out already and wasted no time in supporting it.
Now I am talking about Apple updates here not Samsung. Just saying that if Sprint would have gotten a update from Apple the Apple users would have gotten it already. Unlike all the other users who has to wait and wait and be treated like a red headed step child.

The difference is that Apple sends updates directly. Samsung goes through Sprint. Sprint doesn't have much of a say as to when an Apple update gets released.

That was also before they made the promise to deliver the updates to devices that can get them in a reasonable time.
The moment got 3 or 4 updates in it's lifespan. It actually had 2.1 before the Hero.
The Epic got boofed sure, but still, I think this one will be different, and I think the Epic is the reason they didn't go with a whole new form factor.
Hopefully Samsung will follow HTC's lead. HTC announced 8 devices today that will be getting ICS in early 2012. 2 Sprint phones are on that list. http://tinyw.in/Fw1H

Twiz is the only reason we don't have ics.

The reason it will probably be June is because Samsung is redesigning touchwiz so the next phones to launch also have it. I even think Samsung either has to release it soon or its going to be a long time. Once the nexus is out it is too late. Once the sg3 is out its way too late.
This may be the better phone but I don't even care at this point Samsung always does this crap. It could actually go till September. Point blank I am only buying nexus phones from now on or going to another os. Plus I love how the nexus feels and looks.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
You argument is a bit premature. Last time I checked only one non nexus device has been updated and that just happened yesterday. It was a tablet too, not a phone. Other than the Nexus devices there is not one single ICS phone being sold that I am aware of. So, you can be mad a Samsung all you want. But, they aren't the one changing the OS every 6 months. There has been 19 Android updates in the 3 1/2 years Android has been available.
You are also not remembering Ice Cream Sandwich has been updated 3 times in 3 months and it still is having problems.
I wouldn't mind a nice update once in a while to keep things fresh. But, Twiz is not the only reason we don't have ICS. If that were the case these leaked roms wouldn't be floating around.
Have some faith in our awesome devs. If it weren't for them, you would be sitting on a stock rom right now.

Yeah most of us will buy a nexus. And the reason its upsetting is because April is a long time from now. And most of the Android phones are HTC and Samsung. Both of these companies are pretty slow to update.
Just watch somehow Samsung will release a phone with ics before this one gets it. Anyway wmim happy sprint is getting the nexus. My gf can have this phone and my dad can get the nexus s which also has ics on it.

Well to buy a GN is a bad move you will be losing much more then gaining.
The GS3 lte should drop in August that will blow away GN
Considering all of this hype for ICS you'd think that it was about the return of Jesus or something.
Its like this with every update. Gingerbread and Froyo was the same way.
On my Epic mobile phone.
I doubt Sprint will hold back the release of ICS for sgs2. 1, If people use their upgrades then they wont have one for the galaxy nexus unless they use someone elses upgrade. 2, it has LTE which the sgs2 doesnt.

Are we guessing here. We don't even know what the sg3 is and second screw touchwiz. Nexus is the best phone out now. I'll buy an iPhone before a buy another galaxy.
Its nexus or nothing else. Tired of Samsung and their awful radios. Only thing better on GN hardware wise is the display.....that's it.
GS2 has better Camera ,Speaker , Battery life , processor- Exynos.

Device Performance is the same except for ICS not being 3 party app friendly which is another con.

G Nexus VS SGS3

Which of these 2 devices are you guys most interested in? If they both come out with LTE on Sprint and ICS of course? I personally am Wowed by the camera in our ET4G and hope that the next one only gets better ... what do you guys think?

GNexus is already old and barely a step up from the ET4G
I dunno it's gonna be a hard decision. Im sure the Sprint GalNex will be out much sooner.

OK but I would say about 80% of people don't root. I know that is just an estimate but from experience it seems reasonable to me. So, say vzw sold 100,000 inc2s. That would be 80,000 people that might call them if the update changed something or something was broken in it. That's a lot of time for vzw service reps

I am not saying you are wrong, but my original point is that ICS is on the Incredible S, (which I think is the same phone unless someone tells me differently) and it is fine. If it was such an issue, Verizon would never release an update on any phone ever... because something can always go wrong and often does. The one way they truly know there are issues is to release an update, listen to feedback and send out bug fixes. What we "think" we know is that Verizon has had this update, since at least August if not earlier and they are sitting on it. I don't believe one bit that they are worried that this update might break something, Maybe I am a conspiracy theorist, but I think they are holding off hoping more people update to newer phones. Look at the Galaxy Nexus. JellyBean 2 or 3 months ago and Verizon just updated it about a week ago. The Galaxy Nexus is going on a year old and if they can get people to upgrade, they can also get people into this ridiculous share everything plan. I just don't think it has anything to do with them making this update perfect, because that would not follow how they have handled updates up until now...

HTC has always done from my knowledge. Oh, if you do get the OTA update, then I hope you get good coverage. Last time I did an OTA update, it took two and a half hour to download like 180 MB at full bars.

agreed, not to mention if bugs arise from the ota or post ota (that werent caught in testing or werent thought to be a big deal) then they have to potentially release more incremental updates that cost more money
i dont know exactly how the contract stuff works, but im assuming verizon paid for ics updates from htc for the tbolt and inc2 (since there are debug builds) but might be able to cut their losses by not actually releasing it...if they feel that it doesnt benefit them by releasing it
the tbolt not getting updated makes sense actually since it was released 3/11, and that puts the 20 month on contract update window for those early adopters within the next month or two
i dont see verizon doing anything to lessen the chances those users upgrade....and a new OS just might do that
inc2 was released about 6 weeks to 2 months later, but same theory applies
not to say the update still *wont* happen...but every week that its not out id say significantly drops the chances of it
now that doesnt get htc off the hook for chinese inc2 kernel source...which by my count is approaching (if not passed) their own 120 day window (which techinically by my interpretation is not legal anyway) for releasing it

actually htc has been releasing (for the first time i can remember) the ics updates for the msm7x30 phones on htc dev as RUU's rather than ota's as of late
without looking im pretty sure they did this for the desire s, rhyme, and the more recent inc s updates....they seemed to have stopped ota's through carriers for it
i guess their reasoning is something along the lines of "well the general public wont take the upgrade, so less support" and since its released through htc dev anyway i dont think they have to support it...its more like "here it is, have at it"
This will make the various ICS ROMS for DINC2 much better, since now they will be based on our phone instead of something like our phone.
