Hi all,
Been having some problems with my Defy's earpiece.
Abit of background, before it started acting up:-
1. Damaged the screen and LCD in a fall, phone could turn on but nothing visible on screen
2. Sent to repair in a mobile phone repair shop, they replaced the screen and LCD
Phone now works fine, but the earpiece works abit randomly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It seems to work more often when I receive calls, compared to when I make calls.
The only way I can make a call is by checking first whether the earpiece is working, by logging on to Skype and calling the Echo/Test Sound Service thing. If it's working at the time, then I can make the call as usual. If it's not working, I usually end up having to use the speaker, which works fine.
Is this issue likely to be due to manufacturing problems, or could it have been damaged (along with the screen and LCD) when I fell?
I got the phone in December 2010. I would take it into a T-Mobile store to see if the warranty covers it, but I have a feeling they might somehow know that I sent it elsewhere to get the screen and LCD replaced - I'm guessing this would void my warranty.
Any suggestions on what I should do?
Would appreciate any help, thanks
They definitely know you'd sent the phone to another shop for repair. All phones having the warranty sticker sitting in the battery compartment. Now all you can do is pray they just go blindly repair your phone..

Hmm.. thanks, I might just bring it back to the shop that repaired the screen for me.. if it's too expensive then maybe I'll try change the earpiece myself..

Hi to all,
A couple of days ago I noticed that when I answered a call the colors of the screen looked bad, and I didn't pay attention to it.
Now my screen has transparent horizontal lines which are pretty visible, kind of like interference you get in computer screens when you take a picture of them.
I would like to mention that I haven't dropped the phone even once.
I'm considering doing a factory resest in hopes that it will solve the problem, but I doubt that it is a software issue.
What do you guys think?
Please advise
Itay
Sounds like a broken screen to me. And definitely like a warrenty case. Restore stock f/w if you have flashed and return it.
Restore the original firmware (if you have flashed the phone) and call the samsung service for the assistance.
the thing is that now I don't see it at all.
It's as if it came and gone.
I disabled my task killer and juice defender, performed a complete titanium backup, in case I want to restore afterwards, and now everything is normal.
It does sound like a hardware issue, but do you think there's a chance it is software related?
I'm asking because I purchased it in europe, and I don't live there, so sending it for repair is something I would rather avoid.
Of course, if it is indeed 100% hardare issue, I have no choice.
That is why I'm asking, to be certain and to see if there are others who experienced this issue.
Your replies are much appreciated
update:
It appeared again -> Did a Factory Reset -> It's still there -> Sending for repair.
Must be a hardware issue.
Thank you for your replies.
I've actually always had slight screen issues with my Galaxy S also. The screen flickers slightly once in a while. I don't know if the radio is actually the cause but it's the kind of thing you might expect from radio interference.
Has anybody else noticed this?

Nope, never seen any flicker. My screen seems to have a defect of it's own though, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort to send it in, because I imported mine from the UK while I live in South Africa.
When in the sun or under bright light I can see a two vertical lines near the sides and a horizontal line on dark/black colours and when the screen is off. As if those pixels have a grey/brown tint to them. The line is mostly one pixel thick but in places it is two pixels.
They are almost impossible to see unless under sunlight where they are clearly visible where the screen is black.
Does anyone else see this or know anything about it?
Edit: Apparently it's just the motherboard or something visible through the screen and they all have it, so I'm worrying about nothing...
That's interesting...
It used to come and go, but I think now it's here to stay.
It's really annoying and the screen, while usable, is really not a pleasant sight to look at.
I've attached some photos showing the problem.
With a normal screen I would say that it looks that way because that's what you see when you photograph a screen of an electronic device, but the sad thing is that what you see in the picture is exactly what I'm seeing now.
I did a factory reset, so it's in german now.
I heard some Droid X had a similar problem, but didn't know Galaxy S was having it as well.
In any event, can you confirm that after a factory reset, I no longer have root access?
Just making sure so that they don't give me problems with the warranty.
seem like the phone was dropped, and the screen got damaged
the connectors are lose
double posted again....
Really?
That's very weird...
The only time it was "dropped" was from half a meter , it didn't fall directly but partially sideways, it was with a case, and it landed on its back, not on the screen.
I wouldn't even call that a fall.
Unless, someone in my family dropped it without telling me...
Either way, I think there's no escape but to send it to repair.
If you think it's a problem with the connectors, would you try and give it to some local lab to try and fix it or send it to samsung for replacement?
I faced similar problem.
This problem only occurs when I use the phone in 2g mode.
there are occasions whereby the signal bar for 2g is full and when I place the phone near some conductive surfaces the lines becomes very obvious, to the point of irritating.
nit sure if anyone has such problems too
I have same problems with horizontal lines.
I never paid attention if i am on 2g or 3g when it happens. I will now.
Edit: rooted on jm5
-------------
It seems that my phone too has started to do the same thing since last night.
I have called Samsung and am waiting to hear from them now.
I hope this is a thing covered in the warranty.
I have reverted to the local ROM for India and have deleted everything on my device.
Yet it shows lines flickering like you can see on old computer monitors.
Its not as bad as the ones on the attachment above but it is starting to annoy me.
It usually happens when the screen is completely filled with a single color except black.
Eg. When you pull down the notification tray down.
Also I seem to notice that when the wifi is off, it stops.(I dunno maybe a placebo effect)
aditya_t90 ,
I have sent it to Samsung for repair, and they should tell me in the coming days exactly what the problem is and whether it can be fixed under warranty or not.
I will update as soon as I hear from them.
Until then, try to see if it changes when you hold the phone differently, for example if you grip it more firmly or hold it in another way.

When did you send it in and when did they receive it(if you were not there when they got it).
Also how long has it been without your phone?
The samsung service center is shut in my area today.
I will go to them tomorrow and get this sorted out.
Its not like the phone was cheap or anything.
I actually sent it to my uncle in Germany because it was purchased there.
He went to the store where he bought it and the store owner immediately sent it to samsung and said that probably by this Tuesday or Wednesday (so tomorrow or in 2 days) he will get an answer from them and see what's going on.
aditya_90 ,
Just to let you know that Samsung are sending me a new phone to replace the damaged one.
I sent in my phone for repairs and they replaced the LCD module. The problem is now gone.
I suggest that you should do the same while the warranty still holds since it appears to be the LCD that failed somewhat.
Okay so to start I have a hardware 3 version white HTC evo and it has been recently rooted and is now running sprintlovers ROM.
I don't know if this happened before or after my phone being rooted but now the rear speaker works but frankly doesn't sound so good. I remember some time ago listening to pandora and there being no problem, now listening to music with any sort of depth to it above half volume I hear a distinct hissing/cracking noise that is really kind of annoying. I think this may have been caused by me running GPS while using speakerphone both on loud accidentally. I'm very competent in cellphone/laptop repair and I've looked up how to replace the speaker and where to get the replacement.
Do you guys think that a replacement speaker will fix the problem? I do not have a warranty of any kind.
Phone sounds NORMAL with headphones and in call through the earpiece.
Thanks in advance. - Brandon

yup sounds like your speaker has taken a $h!t. If you've done cell phone repairs before then it should be a no brainer replacing. Ebay probably sells them cheap. Best bet if you dont have TEP. Might want to contact HTC first to see if they will replace it. Wouldnt hurt.

Hey thanks for getting back to me quickly.
Okay, what is a "TEP" I'm guessing its some acronym for warranty. When you say contact HTC do you mean to send in for repair, or to have them possibly send me a speaker? Sending in for a repair for something so easy is a pain. Its not worth the 10 bucks or 30 minutes to mail the phone, be without a phone and wait for it.

Yes TEP=Total Equipment Protection , it cost $7/month from sprint. Well HTC probably wont send you a speaker since if you open your phone you technical "void" your warranty but yeah the repair is a cake walk. If you have techy know how and no warranty plan than I'd repair it myself. Shouldn't be difficult at all.
HERE is a complete guide on how to do it. SO SIMPLE!!!

Perfect. I've never really had an extended warranty with anything. I usually don't have any serious issues and I'm great at repairing stuff (probably because I never have a warranty). I actually do circuit board repair as a second job in my spare time. Usually on RC cars but I do the occasional computer.
I will respond back with the results of the new speaker transplant.
The replacement speaker from ebay made my phone sound great again. Took about 15 minutes to change but a little tip for anyone that purchases a replacement:
You may need to take the foam off of the old speaker and transplant it onto the new one. The foam on the new one was too thin and at first didn't make good contact with the board. Pry off the plastic clear piece with the foam from each and swap to do this.
Also, the tutorial above, the guy is holding the prying tool in what I consider the wrong way. At least it seemed a lot more effortless after turning it around for me.
Hello,
I'm having again a phone speaker issue, yes the one you make calls. It happend before and that time I returned it to the shop where I bought it from.
After that it was returned and the issue just dissapeared and then I got it back and that has been 7 September 2011, since then it has been working up until now. I have tried many things already, flashing stock rom, installing volume ace.
I'm not sure if its broken or its another issue, I have a work around and that's using it on the handsfree speaker. Would somebody perhaps know how to solve it?
re
Hardware fault, you probably got back a refurbished phone, send it for warranty again...
No they sended back my orginal phone, because they told me they didnt find anything and now its back again. But when they got it the phone was off for about 1 or 3 days and when they tested it was not there anymore.
So that's why I don't wanna be to rush and send it for warranty again, last time I send it to the seller. But before I send it I wanna record some proof because in case it dissapears again then atleast I can see it was there really.
re
Well then there's not much you can do, wait for it to happen again, and then rush to your seller and show it to him, so that you have some proof...
I recorded it so I have proof this time. I already contacted HTC, but I'm hoping it will dissapear again.
So right now I have put my dhd off and put a piece off cloth around it because on my room its cold, but it should be able to withstand cold and some moisture, because sometimes it get moist because off calling with it, the screen will get all sweaty after calling.
But nothing serious, but still the issues I had until now just vanished, but the call speaker issue is back now again and its a mystery why it happens, but I hope it dissapears, because I need my phone when travel around christmas.
Ofcourse it can't be water damage, because I have never drop it in water, it only had few drops off rain, but a phone should be able to handle that.
re
Forget hope, do something about it
I believe the phone repair shop has damaged my phone. It went in for broken glass on the lcd. They broke the frame and replaced that after I refused to accept it, went and got it today, almost 2 months after bring it to them, and the screen looked great! The phone's headset speaker works, but the main speaker for ringing and speaker phone does not.
Anything I can do software to test it?
Anything I can do with this phone to fix it?
Worth anything without an external speaker?

You need to look for a speaker flex cable.
All I see is repair shops ruining peoples One X's, hense I don't want to send mine for repair.
If I could do it all over again I would have sent it to HTC directly. I regret everything.
Any chance it has to do with my custom rom? Worked when I took it into the shop.. Maybe I need to reflash it?
Sorry
I had this problem too, but I did it. Going to open the phone for the well known Wi-Fi issue I've accidentally damaged the speaker going too much deeper with the swiss knife. Ordering a new rear for the phone with of course the speaker included solved my problem. It's around a 25€ damage anyway, not huge amount of money but is definitely something. You should ask for a refund or explane them what possibly happens.
I have a HTC one X, got the black screen of death. I assumed it was a loose connection as the phone is sometimes dropped. I found a forum online mentioning that its the motherboard thats faulty.
I had the phone fixed by HTC after the LED screen was shattered, this cost me around 140 quid. They sent me a refurbished phone, I noticed the screen flickered under certain colours but assumed it was a driver issue. I updated the phone and found 2 updates and seemed fine after that.
Then few days back I put my phone down for couple hrs and come back to it to find the screen is black. Apparently is the video driver shorting or something.
HTC basically gave me faulty phone, thats how i see it, just wondering if I was to send it off what do they look for to see if the case has been opened. Hopefully I can seal it back and they might not notice?
I wanted to fix it myself initially, because I have data on my phone thats not backed up.
Also is the motherboard replacement under warranty or?
Hello.
If you open the phone, i would assume they can see its been opened before. This can be done in many ways. Some screws show signs of having been removed, and scratches on the top of the screws also indicates this.. Then there are the "warrenty if void" stickers across places you need to breach.
Do you plan on opening up the phone? From what you write you have not yet opened the (faulty) phone you got from them, as a replacement? If they gave you a faulty phone, they did not fix the issue with it (you still have issues), and then i believe it should be straight forward to return it. Simply telling them what you write here (got it, noticed wierd stuff, updated it and then it seemed fine, but now its dead). The phone never REALLY worked, after you got it back (refurbished = phone returned to HTC that they send out to other customers as "NEW" while its in fact "CLEANED AND AS-GOOD-AS-NEW" - right?)
My advice would be to NOT OPEN the phone, start by having them replace it. If THAT fails, you can resort to opening it yourself.
Kind Regards
TwinAdk
The problem was I was kinda impatient, and assumed it was a loose connection. Also I have data on the phone and was convinced I could fix it myself (have done other phones). I know when you send the phone off they get wiped before any work is done on them.
I have opened it, there was one screw at the top of the phone with a void print on it. I didn't scuff the screw and was put back in the exact same place.
There was no void stickers or tags to move, the only thing was the battery was stuck down to the base of the phone. It's now loose, i was hoping if i just stick that back and send it off they won't notice anything. There's no marks inside or outside of the phone, look new still.
AW: What do repair companies look for to see if warranty is void on phones?
Well I think there is no way to get a new phone, because you bought a refurbished phone. There is a warranty on refurbished phones, but I'm pretty sure that its nearly impossible to proof that it was their fault or already damaged when you got it.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
I bought the phone brand new from a phone company (in store), since then I've had the phone fixed 3 times. Twice was my fault, but the other fault was the touch screen buttons on the bottom of the phone. They were no longer responsive.
I basically shattered the LED screen, sent it off to HTC, paid 140 quid for repair and sent me this crappy refurbished phone back. This one had the flickering issues and eventually fried the motherboard. Something about shorting the video driver i read in another xda thread.
