A few days ago I was thinking Microsoft was taking too much time with Mango and with improving the OS in general but after seeing the iPhone 4S I think Windows Phone is pretty much one (massive) update away to match Apple.
Really all they need to do is support higher resolutions and dual-core processors and the rest should follow (e.g. Unreal Engine). Question is, are they willing to do that already with Apollo (Tango will be minor)? I'm not so sure...
To be honest, I was hoping for the Iphone 4s to be good. It would keep Microsoft and Google on their feet. But jesus, the Iphone 4s is terrible. There is NOTHING on the 4s that can't be found on a high end android of 6 months ago.
Thanks. Just said what was in my mouth.
I must thank Apple too. My WP7 looks lot better now.
It is good. Look at the internals. The iPhone 4 external design is already excellent. They didn't really have to change that. No one was complaining when they used basically the same chasis on the iPhone, 3G, and 3GS TBQH.
The internals, however, are excellent.
Keep it in perspective:
iPhone 3GS 8GB - Free on Contract
iPhone 4 8GB - $99 on Contract
iPhone 4S 16/32/64 GB - $1/2/399 on Contract
The iPhone 4S will be on 3 US carriers.
iTunes is now up to 20 Million Tracks in their Library.
That's not even touching on the changes in iOS5 that are coming, which seem about as big as the Mango update, and it'll be going to devices back to iTouch 3rd Gen and iPhone 3GS.
This is good for apple, not so good for their competitors.
How does HTC expect to sell Titan/Radar for the prices we've seen thus far and compete with that, seriously?

Apollo is at least a year away, going by their NoDo (Tango) and Mango (Apollo) update schedules.
By the tiem Apollo is out, Apple will be getting ready to Announce iOS 6 and Google will have moved up 2-3 versions in Android.
The whole point of the first year of WP7 was for them to position themselves in a way where they didn't have to play catch up so much.
From watching what has happened in Mango and iOS 5, Honeycomb, RIM QNX, etc... There is still a lot of innovation to be done for smartphones and tablets - bother in hardware and software.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the iPhone 4S will be bother CDMA and GSM, so it will be probably the only phone that allows you to go between carriers (Sprint, AT&T, Verizon) without losing 3G capabilities, in addition to being a "World Phone." That will sell highly to businesses, people who travel, and consumers who aren't devout to any single carrier.
That being said, the only way I'll get it is if I switch carriers. I'm moving soon, so that's not completely out of the quesiton. But it's not worth ETFing and running after it withouto at least a 4" screen. I already have an iTouch 4.

Came here to say this exactly.
/Apple fail
People are so wrong writing 4S off...
It's a huge upgrade over 3GS, so folks on expiring two year contracts are in for a treat. Check.
It's better than 4, while still being awesome, so new adopters will get what they want. Check.
Apple also covers all [subsidized market] price points, so it'll be impossible to beat them on the price for anyone. Check.
Apple has a winner on their hands.
And no, nothing is lost for WP7, but for different reasons.

I agree, it is bad for now (although people might be tired of the iPhone design) which is why I was talking future prospect. Microsoft has a huge opportunity with Apollo, they could easily match what Apple is doing and more.
They do need a flagship device though.

Well, that may be true but what about performance? Android needs so much CPU power to be smooth. An iP4 just needed 1GHz and now this thing has a dualcore. No phone on the market today will match the smoothness and graphics power of the 4S. Even the speech recognition on iOS5 seems to be superior to the one in WP7.
That Siri voice assistant thing looks pretty neat, still wouldn't buy an iphone though, screen too small for my ageing eyes!

I don't think people care about the design, TBQH. They care more about the ecosystem. Most people I know with iPhone - maybe all of them - have it in an Otterbox. They don't even get to see the actual build of the device after the first 10 minutes of taking it out the box.

The person you quoted is wrong, anyways.
Android performs well on 1GHz processors. It's badly coded TouchWiz interfaces, for example, and ill-optimize apps that bog it down. The same thing happens on iOS when an app is badly coded. There is lots of complaints in the app store about the "sluggish" performance of Facebook's latest app update, for example... However, iOS (and WP7) are saved by the way they "Multi-Task" applications. That means once you tombstone a sluggish application, it won't bog your system down. That's not the case on Android, Blackberry, or Symbian. A Rogue Application (and especially system component) can bring your (or any) system to a halt.
Samsung Fixed TouchWiz in TW 4.0. It stays out of your way a lot. That's why the Galaxy S II flies while getting some incredible battery life on top of that (8.5+ hours of continuous video on the AT&T variant, which is almost comparable to an iPhone and better than OS7 Blackberries)... That shows that good hardware and decent coding in Android can produce a top-notch phone. That's why they're selling like hotcakes.
The issue Microsoft ran into with WP7 is that they released it missing a few too many things off the bat, so when they worked on Mango, they STILL had to make concessions are pretty expected things just to make sure they could make good time. They already had their consumers waiting for almost a year, so even though they "finished" it early, there was no good PR benefit in holding out a couple/few more months to add in more stuff because of that. People would have been way too pissed. They will be really reliant on Word of Mouth to propagate WP7 in the face of Apple's onslaught - Android was similar, in the beginning. However, Android was playing in a much different market. RIM was still HUGE here, and Apple was on the iPhone 3G back then...
One of the biggest features in iOS 5 is the new Notification System. That's pretty ironic, becuase WP7 basically lacks a decent notification system. Also, Apple stole WP7 Toast Notifications and made them like 10x better.
But Like I said, the lack of a 4" screen is a bit of a stopper for me. Maybe I'll get used to that size from using the iTouch. I'm not sure, though. It's a ***** to type on a screen that small...

I'm not sure where you are, but here in Canada the iPhone is ridiculously overpriced. The 15 month old 4 is still on for like $170 on a THREE YEAR contract.

Thats just games.
All I can say is that Apple have just convinced me to buy a Windows Phone, most likely when Nokia's hit the shelves.
I have an iPhone 4 at the moment, and my contract is up for renewal next month..if they had bothered to release an iPhone 5, I would renew there and then and upgrade to that..no question. Instead they released the 4S, which has practically zero advantage for me over the 4. Faster CPU + GPU? Big deal, my iPhone 4 never lags with what its got..so I don't need that. Siri? Purely a gimmick, the few times I would have a use for this are not worth £500. I will still have an iPhone 4 for work, but for my personal phone..i'm jumping ship as soon as I spot a Windows phone that's worth it.
Definitely an epic failure by Apple when it comes to existing iPhone 4 owners..great for new adopters and 3Gs owners, but for the rest of us? We have no reason to upgrade.
Oh, and about iOS 5. Whats so great about it?
Notification center is just a copy from Android. You can tweet from almost everywhere (i give a **** to twitter).
What else? iMessage? Really, I would like something like that, but I still prefer multiplatforms like WhatsApp or Kik. Or even Facebook (though MS should have added some option to message too).
iOS 5 still an pretty app launcher and nothing more.

The problem is Microsoft schedule. They're in a pretty good spot with Mango but if they stick to that one big update a year they will always play catch up. At least for the first couple of years they should have had fast, regular updates like they promised. Still they could be in a position to have a iPhone 4S-like device in a year if they go all out on Apollo.
I don't care how much you shoot down apple for making a safe move, it's a smart one. Plus Siri takes the mick out of WP7 voice commands, the only use I have for voice texting is when I want a laugh, it doesn't pick up any slight accent. I'm from the north east england and it's translations are just embarrassing. I can almost guarantee that Siri will have no problem, Microsoft needs to work a little harder!

When they will be competing with the iPhone 5 and Android God-knows-what. The cycle will just continue.
Consumer expectations tend to move with the market. 2 years ago Mango would have been a slam dunk, and it would have decimated iOS and Android around those time frames, but as always... When you wait, the competition doesn't stand still.
They needed to Update a bit faster. I'd say the first 2 years or so they should have taken the Google Route of 1 major update per ~6 months and after that they could have backed off to 1 major update a year.
An iPhone 4S like device in a year is like an iPhone 3GS now.
For the person above... Get your WP7 device. iPhone 4S basically is an iPhone 5 from a hardware standpoint. The only thing they kepc, was the chasis design (i.e., the general look). The iPhone, 3G, and 3GS all looked very similar and no one *****ed about it. What matters is how it performs and what's inside. That's what you're paying for. Most people put these things in a case anyways, cause those iPhones with Glass on teh Front and back are fragile, expensive devices. They don't care how it looks, as long as the internals and the software is new - which they are.
Apple knows this, better than you. That's why they are able to make this move confortably. Don't think they have had any issues making some design changes if they didn't feel that way...

Hi Everyone,
Tell me, why would anyone actually choose an iPhone over a Desire/N1?
As I see it, the only thing an iPhone has over the Desire is the volume of apps, but can you give me a list of what the Desire/N1 has over the iPhone?
Speaking as someone who has had WinMo, Nokias etc. I can honestly say that my iPhone 3GS is the best device I have ever had. User interface is functional and simple and I can find an app for everything - plus the apps are mature. JB adds a new level to it, and provides the customisability that I love to do.
What I don't like about the iPhone is the restrictive nature of it, with the extreme control that Apple has. Ofc i have jailbroken the iPhone but Apple are making it increasingly harder to do this and I fear we are not far away from them making it near impossible to do so (hell you already have a situation with the newest phones having a tethered jb - i.e. they need to re-jb if their phone loses power, or is rebooted).
That being said, and my heart being in Linux land, my next phone will hopefully be the HTC Desire. I love the customisability of Android, the less restrictive nature, and for someone like me, I reckon i'll get more fun out of it.
The Desire's hardware beats a 3GS hand down. Android is getting there but is not as mature (obviously) as the iPhone OS, and nor are its Apps. But they are getting there. The Desire is a good enough handset that in a years time, Android really will be competing with the iPhone and your hardware will still be capable.
My wife will get the iPhone....
because the iPhone has the best apps. when it comes down to it, that's all the average smartphone user cares about...

And that's the discussion I keep having with my mates. With the Desire's hardware and Eclair+Sense, the only real thing that the stock iPhone 3GS has going for it now is the apps. My argument there is that once a developer has perfected their app on/for the iPhone they'll likely(/hopefully) then be seeking the challenge, and the revenue(?), from launching it on the Android Market. The Desire's/N1's/Droid's hardware specs and Eclair's open customizability and capability would then allow them to take it to the next level.
1. Better UI controls. Android has great homescreens but when it comes to app UI controls, it lags behind Android.
2. More and Better casual applications. Many more games. Can be purchased around the world in 70+ countries. Much more free/promotion games compared to Android.
3. Better camera than the camera of most Androids.
A couple of things the Desire has going for it vs the iPhone:
*Camera: 5MP w/ flash vs 3MP w/o flash
*Screen resolution: 800x480 vs 480x320
*Battery: I can't back this up but I'm guessing the AMOLED display will drain less juice than the iPhone's traditional backlit LCD. Also, removable battery is always better than non-removable.
*Multi-tasking vs no multi-tasking
*Non-obstructive notications
*Useful information on homescreen vs just a bunch of icons
*File explorer
*Text reflow in browser
*Hardware buttons!

I went from Nexus One to iPhone 3G S because of iPhone has much better quality apps. Apps make sense as they are thoughtfully designed and hence are easy to use unlike some Android applications which have every feature under the sun but are unintuitive. A good example of this is Astrid.
The good news is 2Do developer have confirmed they are working on 2Do port for Android. Then you will all understand what I am trying to say.
Also, iPhone has much much better games then Android.

Exactly I love the apps and games I got on my Ipod touch but I wouldn't buy an Iphone cause I dont like that Att crappy service.
All hardware aside, you have to approach this as a standard customer. Said customer buys into what marketing sells; buys into all the hype generated around the fanboys spread across the internet; buys what they are told to buy.
Because of the market saturation, apps developed for the iphonepods will be more cared for and mature a lot faster. Facebook is a prime example of this. If you don't use facebook then this example is lost on you The iphone has a fantastic fbook app that keeps you in the app and offers almost all the same functionality as you would find in a desktop browser; almost. Fbook on android however...not even close. This is a deal breaker for those who live and die with fbook.
So you have a bajillion apps being sold every second in apple's app store generating a ****ton of revenue for all involved giving people reason to create solid apps. There is some pretty solid DRM involved (though not unbreakable ) preventing app piracy which leaves the devs with a peace of mind.
Now take the android world. While android is found on more devices now than I could possibly think of, the average user would never know it. There is no advertising (well nothing compared to the viral campaigning apple has successfully pulled off), no customer draw...android is, for the most part, word of mouth.
So with the above in mind, the numbers just are not there for developers to devote a ton of time into making apps comparable to what you will find on the iphone...not yet anyways.
App protection is another biggie. So with both platforms you require the device to be unlocked/rooted in order to get around this. With the android platform it's a bit easier; once you have root, you have free apps. With the iphone it's a bit trickier but still very doable; one layer beyond simply rooting (jailbreaking). Don't kid yourself if you think devs are not aware of this.
Thankfully, the majority of users on both platforms don't use their powers for evil or we would see a serious drop in apps I bet.
So why would anyone choose an iphone? Apps and itunes.
Apps are a big deal; they are a means to keep in touch with friends and family, they are a means to get unlost, to get lost, to waste time, to save time...the better the app, the more efficient you can do all of these tasks.
People want to carry their music with them. Love it or hate it, itunes is here to stay and a ton of people have fully entrusted their music to itunes. an iphone means everything in itunes is easily synced.
Personally, I went from dumbphones to winmo (moto Q on verizon) to the g1 (t-mobile) and never returned to winmo. I switched to att from tmo and without really thinking about it, I gave my g1 to a friend in favour of an iphone3g. I should have just kept my g1 on edge on att...now while still on att, I am happily back to android with my nexus one. For me, everything stated above carries zero weight in value compared to the freedom I have with my n1.
...thursday rants are fun
Simply because Average Joe (or Jane for my part) doesn't read XDA
I think the more appropriate question is "Why would anyone choose the iPhone?".
Consider this scenario:
You're playing a casual game and listening to your music at the same time. You want to change to another playlist. You can't even do that without completely exiting your game.
I can't fathom using a supposedly smart device that can't even handle that simple of a multi-task.
I think the reason why iphone is still a big winner is only because of the apps and games.
Do u guys think good apps make a good OS?
Why Windows is still now the most popular OS?

I have had a variety of smartphones from Blackberrys, to Android. My android phones are by far the best ones. I have up my iphone and ordered the G1 for the original release date. Even though at that time it was not on the same level as the Iphone it opened the door for us to have phones like the Nexus One, Desire, Legend, Moto Droid...ect.....tons of phones that give us choices. My Nexus one out the box was amazing, rooting the thing made it even more ridiculous.
As many of you have said previously, the only thing that I can see is better on iPhone than on Desire / Nexus is the Games, so I do not understand yet why you pay so much more if you buy this just for games? why not buy an iPod if you want the games/mp3.
Because its the trendy thing to buy.
I brought an ipod touch when they first came out. I was sick of it within a day. The apps are pretty well junk or gimmicks, I brought a ton of them never use them.
Games yeah right, maybe sitting in the car waiting for someone but really there crap and you are better off just getting on the net and reading XDA
There also to big to put in your pocket and use as an mp3 player.
But good on apple for marketing to the sheep so well and there about to do it again with the ipad!
Hi ,
I had HTC HD , and now i am on my way to buy a new Phone.
I wont buy 3GS , because in 3 months we will have a new Iphone , so that will be sucky sucky. on the other hand - if i pay so much for a phone i want to be able to play on it , and i saw some tests , showing Iphone has much more FPS in games.
is it a GPU thing ? if so , why would i buy the Desire.
currently this is the only thing -
if Desire had good games with good quality 3D and nice FPS . no reason to even consider 3GS or any iPhone .
Hardware (processor speed) comparisons are simply "wrong". Numbers on paper mean nothing because the OS software are not the same. Don't know why people don't get this...
That video that idandush referred is a good example.

I would buy, easily. Shame it's not selling here, and if I buy from another country, when it arrives I would have to pay 100% of tax.
I don't get this preconceived ideas on some media outlets. Why "from Gizmodo of all places"? Maybe you only read some website because you think they're biased but I try to read a bit from all of them. For information this is how Gizmodo reviewed things before this phone:

It's quite simple, all websites in the Gawker network are known for from time to time write very bad articles just to piss people off. Because that gives them traffic boosts.
Here are two examples of articles that has been criticized:
http://gizmodo.com/5833787/my-brief-okcupid-affair-with-a-world-champion-magic-the-gathering-player

They may give publicity to Windows Phone, which is a very good thing (for us), but I can't help to wonder if it isn't just to piss off the MS haters.
This anti-WP7 bias that supposedly exists on review sites is total BS.
Accept it people - it's entirely possible reviewers just don't like WP7 OS or hardware vs the Android and iPhones they're used to.

Quite possible, but that should not preclude an honest review of the inadequacies AND capabilities of WP7 without going on a rant about how MS should give up and concede the market. And for the record, anti-WP7 reviewer bias is not BS.
you know it's part of advertising right? Companies like Apple, MS and Google paid big bucks to splatters their name all over the web. In this case....probable Nokia.
I never trust any review on the web...unless it's by the consumers.
The Nokia might be a nice phone, but all I know is that if I were to settle for such a small phone, I would go with the Focus Flash. I much prefer a perfectly flat screen and the shape and style of the Flash is outstanding. Combined with a better AMOLED display and the style, the Flash is more appealing to me than the Lumia 800 and it has pretty much the same hardware...both are just as featureless, I mean (no FFC and such).

I just think that as a media outlet that has access to all the phones I find it a bit odd to give this title to this particluar phone when the Titan and Focus S have bigger screens, removable batteries or FFC for instance. You would have to give some considerable weight to Nokia Drive but it doesn't look like it was a factor there.

If smaller screen and lack of removeable battery were ever a negative, the iPhone should have never gotten the 9s it got in every iteration on Engadget. There is little difference between the Titan and 800; both have smaller storage and lack of FFC.
But to be honest, if I was an online reviewer and I had to say which phone is currently the best Windows Phone, I would say the Lumia 800. You may not read my articles ever again
Let us face facts, in the Windows Phone world the experience from phone to phone is going to be so similar that something like looks, camera, and colours could be the differentiator. I have been harping on the lack of colours on these feature phones for a while now. I think Nokia really has something with that.

Sometimes I cannot tell if you're serious with some things you say. The Titan has a FFC and a much bigger screen. Same goes for the Focus S. The iPhone wasn't compared to another iPhone in the ecosystem unlike the Lumia 800. It's not like you had the choice of a 4" iPhone you can compare it to. In the same ecosystem the Lumia is missing features other phones have so to call best WP out there is questionable when this is coming from a tech website reviewer (if you want to believe that good for you). Unless like I said you consider Nokia Drive to be an amazing must have feature.

It was an error on my part. I dunno why you say that about me. I thought we agreed it is a personal thing. Why is a "much bigger screen" a positive thing? The best selling phone in the last 3 years has a 3.5" screen. Yes, there are no iPhone options, but choice is choice, and people choose to own a 3.5" iPhone.
I am wrong about the FFC, my error, but I am serious that I think the Lumia is the best Windows Phone on the market.
All my opinions and needs:
The Lumia 800 is the most gorgeous phone I have ever seen. Ever. This is the RAZR of 2004. The iPhone 4 of 2010.
I am strongly considering getting the blue.
The features that it does lack I do not care too much about. My Defy was 2GB internal, 2GB microSD card. Plenty of space left. I do not need a FFC.
I want a phone that looks good, is easy to pocket and hold, has a nice screen, wonderful battery life, is stable, and has a high end camera. The compromise I am making is in the app department with the ecosystem (no EA scrabble, do they have words with friends?) but I will live.
I am serious. So the Focus S with its AMOLED screen, 1GB RAM, and bigger storage is the best one out of the three to you?
I probably won't get any of the 3 due to the lack of 32GB (although you never know since I've just repurchased a Zune HD) but yes in my eyes the Focus S is the best one. 4" and 4.3" are the two screen sizes that suit me so the Lumia is too small and the Titan too big. Also Samsung phones tend to get better battery life and camera experience when compared to HTCs. FFC I can live without so I don't hold that too much against the Lumia 800 (but then again I'm not a reviewer).
Ultimately none are worth getting a new contract for when they're not significantly better than my Omnia 7 so I'll wait and see what comes in 2012.

We are def in two different segments from that standpoint. I love my Defy. It is the most compact 3.7" phone I have ever seen. Smaller than an iPhone with a 3.5" screen (thicker but in all more compact). I used a SE X10 for a day and it was a bit of a struggle getting out of my jeans when sitting.
I really wanted an Omnia 7. But I knew WP was not for me then due to missing apps I needed. Then I read all the issues with Omnia and updates. So I would be hesitant to get the Flash. But I agree that there is not enough reason to go from Gen 1 to Gen 2. Its like the HTC wildfire/desire to wildfire s / desire s.
Call me superficial but the N9 had me at hello. When I read the Sea Ray rumour I could not wait. Unfortunately, I read the unlocked version may not be available until 2012

A bigger screen isnt always a plus esp as they have the same resolution and thus the lumia has a higher pixle density and its got the clear black amoledscreen. Big screen = big ugly device that sits heavy in my pocket. I would not only say the lumia has a better screen than the titan i would say it smashes it to the ground. I drive a 7 seater hyundai is that a better car then my old Subaru Impreza i think not. Bigger isnt always better.
So I've always been an android dude, I have given the iPhone credit where it deserves but I never see why it sells so much. But this upcoming year looks very incrediby tough for Apple. Especially with the S3 and the One X. Do you think the same Apple lovers will still suck on Apples lolipop? Or turn to all these intense android phones?

iPhones will continue to be bought by the following:
-Apple fanboys
-People desiring a solid product that requires minimal figuring out and runs great out of the box
-People who want a simple phone that just works
-People who shop based on price tags
-People who don't compare features
-People who feel that Apple is an elite product and want the status (redundant maybe with the first on my list...)
-People who like talking to their phones for some reason
Google will continue to attract:
-Google fanboys
-People who love tinkering with their phones
-People who love freedom and choice with their phone
-People who compare features and prices closely
-People who love cutting edge technology
-People who like screens more than 3.5" in size
-People who like green robots delicious product names
All in all, I believe it will be a wash in terms of new fans coming and going. Both have attractive features, and pros and cons. I'll never buy an iPhone, but mostly due to Apple's insane price inflation and lack of SD card expansion (also the battery being non-removable, but I've forgiven HTC for that faux pas due to the other incredible things going on with the EVO LTE).

Insane price inflation? How much is a iPhone 4s / iPhone 4? Same as all new flagship phones.
Besides that, the iPhone 4s continues to lead in graphical performance months after release. The display is still one of the best on the market. And although Android has improved a lot, iOS continues to be the platform of choice for creative/innovative third party apps.
Btw, Android already has a bigger user base but the iPhone will continue to be the best selling single device.

Yes, insane price inflation. On Sprint, the 16 GB is 199, the 32 GB is 299, and the 64 GB is 399. $200 more for the extra space? Come on now. That's absorbent by today's memory prices. I'll take the EVO LTE and the 16 GB internal, expandable with SD slot, plus 25 GB cloud with dropbox (for 199).
As for the camera and display, many of the latest phones can top that (see One line by HTC, among others).
I had an iPod not long ago, and I'm not much more impressed with the iStore than I am with the Play Store. Both are so vast that they seem to have anything I need.
And personally, I was quite tired of the boring OS. It was reliable though, I'll say that.
But as for sales, of course it will be the number one seller. That's like comparing Big Mac sales vs. every other burger sold at McDonalds. The beauty of Android is the choice, which creates scattered sales statistics. I don't think this shows anything much about iPhones, but it shows the diversity in Android options.

Most 16GB Android phones are 199, many are more, so they are priced competitively. Esp considering how well Apple products hold their value. Don't add sd card, there are plenty of Android phones that won't have sdcard support as well.
None of that matters though, it will still be the best selling iPhone ever and make billions.

It all comes down to personal preference obviously. I'm not knocking Apple for their making of lots of money, they obviously will. I just don't like the fact that they charge $100 for an extra 16 GB ($20 maybe?), but people are willing to pay it so they may as well.
But I'm not sure that PLENTY of Android phones won't have SD support... unless we see a complete shift over to the cloud storage. That's one of Android's selling points, I don't see companies straying from that anytime soon. Although the One X shocked me with that lack of support.

Terrific video.
The guy presents and speaks well, with clear thoughts and sentences. Most people on YouTube sound like they're making things up as they go. This sounds like it was rehearsed - very nice video!
=] glad you got the point.... his videos aren't actually rehearsed .. he states he has no scripts this all coming from expierence/disappointment. although he loves both android and iOS but chooses android over iOS because it IS better. He's not done with all 6 parts but the first 4 are proof enough that android is more intuitive and "just works" even more efficiently than iOS.

I think that android grabs more to users that want to customize and make their phone truly unique and have total control. I have never messed with a jailbroken iPhone, but based on what I have heard its not nearly as customizable as a rooted droid. This helps apple keep a more stable/faster product due to simplicity. But to those like me that get bored with phones and rather than buying a new one can just grab a new rom, droid is #1.
I've switched over to the iPhone 4s and although I'm happy (for some time at least.) I do miss Android and I still very much appreciate my Evo 4g.
Although It might seem a bit dumb the main reasons I switched over was because of the screen, camera, and apps.
My Evo's charging port was also broken. If it wasn't I wouldn't have upgraded and instead gone with the new Evo this summer.
If apple doesn't step their game up majorly and the next iPhone is only a minimal upgrade from the 4s and for whatever reason they don't upgrade the damn screen size, I'm definitely going back to android.
Customization on the iPhone is a bit harder but there's plenty of themes and widgets like there is for Android and once u get the hang of it it's a piece of cake.
With these new phones having cameras as good as the iPhones, hd resolution displays, huge screens, the android market quickly catching up to apples app store (in terms of quality apps) it's hard not to go back to android. Sadly I only just upgraded 2 months ago.
Every now and then I still boot up my Evo and flash a new build of ics or miui ics just to calm my flash withdrawals.
Until the day comes that I return to android I will keep on lurking these forums like a creep
A lot of people do not realize that apple cannot change their products mainly because of their business plan. This is because they Bulk buy their parts. They pretty much have to leave it up to their amazing PR department to sell their consumers on the products they are going to release without the influence of other products on the market. Basically the next iPhone 5 is decided by their supply, not the market so any information given right now is pure speculation.

That video is preaching to the choir. We know the advantages of Android all too well. The reality os a majority of iPhone users have already made up their mind they want it and don't even bother to cross shop or even think about Android/WP7. It simply doesn't matter. I don't really want to call people like this stupid, they aren't interested in efficiency or configuring, they just want to use the simple, limited UI iOS has.

And rest of Asia iPhone is expensive minimum by 100$ (depends on country) as compared to android flagships.
Will you say there is no price difference??

I think this is depends personals preference. To me, I prefer the iPhone, and have collected many nice resources and free apps for it, such as:
http://www.enolsoft.com/blog/must-have-iphone-4s-apps/
http://mashable.com/2012/02/10/free-iphone-apps-every-day/
For your information, this "10 Things iPhone Does Better Than Android" could be reference.
And now there is not iPhone 5, only iPhone 4S.
So I realize this thread might not go over well, but just looking for a little discussion to see where others stand.
I'm a die hard Googler. I currently own a Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. I couldn't live without Gmail and its advanced feature set. I use Google+, Maps, Calendar, Contacts, Photos, Music, etc. on a daily basis and I truly believe that Google's services blow Apple's crappy iCloud junk out of the water. iOS is a constrained OS that isn't scalable enough to satisfy my inner geek (I've used iPhones enough in the past to have learned this the hard way).
This brings me to the iPhone 5. Even though I know iOS isn't for me, and even though I can't stand Apple's direction with respect to mobile devices, I find the hardware extremely appealing. The level of engineering is exceptional, and the overall fit and finish results in a device that looks and feels like a work of art. The best analogy I can think of is that the iPhone is the Mercedes Benz while most Android handsets are your typical Honda or Toyota.
Am I the only one that is desperate for somebody to step up and make us a solid, well built, powerful Android device? It seems like Samsung is addicted to plastic, HTC insists on spoiling their otherwise solid hardware by bloating the whole experience with the crapware known as Sense, Motorola is intent on releasing 20 versions of the same funny looking device, and the rest are spinning their wheels. If somebody were to step up and offer an Android handset that had external appeal comparable to the iPhone, I am confident it would be the nail in the coffin for Apple's smartphone sales.
RANT COMPLETE
I hear what you're saying. While I want nothing to do with with the iphone, I could agree that maybe manufacturers could pay more attention to the form factor of most android devices. Don't get me wrong, I think my Nexus devices are gorgeous.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I agree with you 100 percent. When the iPhone 4 came out, it was hands down most sexiest looking phone out there. Their build quality feels amazing in the hand. I would have loved a phone that looked like that and ran android. Obviously the fragile ness is a downside as well as the early radio weakness aka death grip. The galaxy nexus was a huge step up in design for android and I think is still the best looking android device. I really hope manufacturers improve design. Even though functionality is great, I wasn't a fan of the SII or the SIII's design. The Sony Xperia phones are nice too but so far almost all android phones look the same. But damn is the Gnex sexy as hell especially when the screen is off.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
iPhones all look the same to me, since the first one, and personally I think the hardware/software of Nexus line devices are very well put together. I can agree that other manufacturer Androids tend to lack in solid design and hardware/software being well built for each other, but I strongly believe the Nexus is the solution for that issue. I feel no envy towards the iPhone 5.
Honest opinion without any need to bash on Apple.
Sent from my AOSP Android 4.1.1 Galaxy Nexus.
I have to admit, even though the iPhone 5 is more of the same from 4/4s it is a nice looking and high quality phone. Android OEM's would do well to step up this area. And personally I don't mind plastic phones if the quality of the plastic is good, and the fit and finish are pleasing. I haven't inspected the gs3 up close yet but have played with one several times. It is a nice phone and very comfy in the hand. But Samsung would do well to mix up its image a little and come out with a metal phone or two, albeit engineered to overcome the reception issues that are possible with metal phones. Really wish Nokia had jumped in the android boat. They had a handset for everybody.
need more high def music...
I do like the build quality of the iphone as well. But I've also been thrilled in every way, shape and form with the GNex. And hey, drop either of'm and I'd say the Nexus has a better chance of no damage.
Yes, the iphone5 is a beautiful phone as far as hardware is concerned. In my opinion, The only manufacturer who can keep up with appealing hardware at the moment is HTC (I like their One series designs, but to each their own).
On top of hardware designs, I believe Android is also lacking one other "feature" compared to the iPhone. I intentionally use the quotes, because I am referring to the lack of quality accessories that are available for us to choose from. Apple did well with their aftermarket electronic accessories because they were supported very well by other companies. Android can't really do this, because we have so many different form factors when it comes to hardware, and the major one being the location of the charging port on each phone. If Android standardized the location of the charging port, accessories would be much easier to engineer for Android. However, this may be an after-thought soon since we have NFC and there would be no need for a physical connection between accessories and the phone itself. The lack of NFC and the changed connector will be the downfall of the iPhone.
And lastly, my biggest gripe has to do with the quality control of Android manufacturers. I've personally only ever had Sammy Androids, but I gotta say, they suck at QC. My Droid Charge had sporadic radio issues, resulting in crackling voice calls regardless of radio updates. Now I'm on the Gnex and I've yet to see someone who has a FLAWLESS screen. Purple tinting, banding, burn-ins, low brightness issues...
Regardless, I am not going to support Apple at this day and age. Not a fan of their business practice, and I don't like being associated with the majority of iPhone user who aimlessly throw their money at a shiny new toy w/o knowing much about it.
sure the iphone is sexy that you cannot deny and that has always been how Apple does things. They put a great deal in designing an attractive product so that it appeals to the mass market who sometimes do not care about the functionality, performance, and hardware specs. This has helped them tremendously in getting people buying the phone because of its looks.
It is hard for the other manufacturers to compete against Apple since not only they have to compete in the industrial design but also compete in the hardware specs. I have to say, with non-iPhone devices, HTC seemed to be the most creative in terms of design with their latest One lines. They make one sexy phone that is packed with features. Unfortunately, it does not get as much attention as Samsung device because people are very locked into the whole Galaxy line of product as Samsung has already established its name and branding with it. In the Windows front, I think Nokia is doing a great job and it always has been quite good at designing hardware that looks good. But sadly for Nokia, Windows Phone is just not as popular as Android.
Not a fan of ANY apple OS nor am I a fan of their business practices, However their design and quality is extremely appealing. Jony Ivey has done an incredible job at apple and is probably the real factor behind their success, purely on aesthetics.

I had a couple wp7 phones and trust me, the os leaves a lot to be desired.
the app store is a barren wasteland, multitasking hardly works and little things left out (like being able to control separate volumes, like headset and ringtone, or ringtone and alarm)
OP, I agree with many of your points. I dislike Apple and I hate itunes even more but I am jealous of their systematic update process and dammit everything just works approach. My wife has an iPhone 4 so I get to play with one daily. Even apps that are available on both platforms seem more polished on iO6, I realize there are a number of reasons for this.
I too have a GN and an N7. I love the openness and customization of Android but frankly I'm getting way too busy with real life to keep tweaking and adjusting. And while fragmentation has become the big buzz word this year it has annoyed me since I purchased my first Android phone 2 years ago (Samsung Captivate). 5 android phones later and it's still a big problem. Meanwhile my wife's iPhone 4 which she purchased at the same time just got iO6.

My iPhone? Meh, A big brick of glass in my opinion. It's broken the minute it gets dropped. But some people like what it has to offer. It's simplistic in the sense that things work (I've seen a few people say this in the thread) BUT the only reason it works is because you have to do things their way. (iTunes sync, 1 computer at a time, etc) There are a lot of things that fail when it comes to the iPhone that a lot of people hate. That's why they go elsewhere beyond Apple. The one thing you cannot deny though is how good Apples marketing is. They're extremely well known. Because of this they have a lot of loyal, blind, fans. Even though they don't know the specs, release dates, etc. They want what is essentially great marketing.
Now I personally believe that if you were to sit everyone down and hand them 3 phones (An iPhone, Windows phone and an Android phone) It would probably be pretty even across the board. Why? Personal Preference.
At the end of the day Apple is still going to be playing catch up to everyone else. Why isn't the iphone 5 an HD device? The resolution is sub par considering everything is HD now.
I'll end with that I'd much rather have a Windows phone that is truly simplistic in every sense of the word than another iPhone. For those of you who think that the iPhone 5 is a beautiful piece of great hardware? I point you to the HTC 8X, a Windows phone that's exceptionally beautiful.
So with all of this I have a bad taste for Samsung. Not the Note 7 because it is a real marvel of a phone, but the company that kind of down played this recall and now is fixing things in the 11th hour. No matter the %, 92 isn't 37 and I hate when companies go half way on ownership.
To that end I pre-ordered an Iphone 7 plus 256GB in jet black. For the meantime while my Note sat in a drawer, I wound up using a spare new Iphone 6 that my helpdesk guy had laying around. I made things my own by adding cards to apple pay, using a hack to get icons to move down and to the right, using the IOS 10 widget panel, GMAIL, Google cal, Google Play music, news stand etc. Here is why I need help...
Iphone Cons-
No Customization and hacks to do simple things (but then, do I actually care about that anymore)
Screen is not as nice as the Note 7 (But its damn good and I notice no resolution difference. In some ways the screen is more accurate on the 7 plus based on me seeing it on the 6s plus)
The phone is huge for a 5.5" No denying that
Apple pay is NOT Samsung Pay
No Wireless Charge (whatever because I can get a dock but its just so easy)
Back button still ****ing annoys me
Notifications are better in IOS 10 than ever but still less than that of Android
EVERYONE HAS IT
Dated physical design
No QC
Makes me feel like a woman hipster with a giant manbun
Iphone Pros-
Smooth as **** (and will be in 6 months while my note surely wont be)
Touch ID is still better than the fingerprint on the note or the iris on the note
Gonna last as long on a charge even with a 2900mah battery
Multi-task is finally better and while not google, I ask you to tell me why I would care if the outcome is identical when navigating between apps
Design while old feels really smooth, premium and aluminum is less fragile for sure
IOS10 is the first IOS I don't really mind
Google services make IOS great and in 10 you can hide factory apps
Probably a slightly better camera now
A10 Fusion is fast as hell and on their software will more than likely lap the Note even from day 1 with real life use. Definitely in 6 months though
Cases are generally better and more premium
Swiftkey makes IOS also usable
Touch ID is so fast and never misses my finger. ID integration in each app
Apps are cleaner, more sophisticated looking and have features my android apps don't
God I am getting old, but everything just works and while tinkering is fun, I find myself not missing it in IOS anymore
Raise to wake takes care of the AOD need for me
Bluetooth audio and BT battery management are exponentially better than the note
So here is the truth. I feel awful leaving android, but I have now used the iphone even the smaller older one and its still fast and smooth and enjoyable. So I know you are all heated about the topic, all generally Andy fans but I ask as a fellow techy who is getting old with a couple of kids, what the **** do I choose.
P.S. Please don't bring up S pen because its not a factor for me.
I have a replacement Note 7 and it's like butter.
No lag and such a difference. Then you can go further, a Note 7 without lag, smaller bezels than the iPhone 7 Plus my headphone jack (Sorry, couldn't resist) and the ability to cutomise until my heart is content.
Enjoy your iPhone it's a fantastic device, but it's certainly no (replacement) Note 7
You have to make the decision that works best for you in the long term. would I personally go to an iPhone? Nah, in my opinion they're phones for kids/teens and the only way to make them semi usable is to add a crap-ton of Google stuff to them, or you can just get the actual google operating system wrapped in WAYYYY better looking hardware, i don't care what anyone says, the space above and below the iPhone screen is just unacceptable. I write apps for both IOS and Android and they are "smooth" because they are so limited and clocked down that they run great, but that slows trust me. Android phones tend to be power houses and can catch here and there but I've personally never experienced the lag people speak of on Touchwiz, not even when i rooted my phones back in the day, thing is people want to add everything and tweak everything to the phone then don't understand why it hits a snag every once in a while. But again, my explosive Note 7 runs perfect, no lag or anything, its buttery smooth, and all of my Samsung phones have been even when power using them.
So at this point it comes down to preference, OS wise and aesthetically. There's no question iPhone has more mainstream appeal making acquiring accessories and stuff a lot easier, But there are no shortage of Android accessories available either, and Android is meant to customize and make your own, where as IOS is set to strict guidelines to have it always look how Apple wants it to look. For everything I've listed here and more Android is just the choice for me, preferably Samsung because they've found that perfect phone formula that seems to be tailored to me personally and professionally, but that isn't everyone's taste, fact is, there really isn't anything that you get in an iPhone that you don't already get on Android, but there's a lot on Android you cant get with iPhone.
Good luck!

I noticed that also. My replacement is noticeably smoother. My last one would randomly lag and stutter. The new one is as smooth as my Exynos S7 Edge was.

What Samsung did was extraordinary and cost them billions of dollars both in cash and lost market capitalization. Based on how few phones have overheated they could have played kick-the-can and stalled this for months or been forced involuntarily in to addressing the issue. Instead they announced within a week of identifying the problem internally that they were recalling 2.5M Note7s. Clearly some here aren't in business because to think any multi-billion dollar multinational conglomerate could recall 2.5M of anything faster or better than Samsung did is a pipe dream. They obviously had their sh!t together because the recall program they were already in the process of in the U.S. was blessed within days by the CPSC.
I've been buying Samsung products for years (mostly Note phones and tablets) and this is the first serious problem I've encountered. The Note7 was the best Samsung phone I've owned before this debacle and nothing's changed after.
Audi had a huge unintentional acceleration problem, Honda is tied directly to the Takata airbag issue, GM was involved in an ignition switch problem cover-up, and VW's getting their ass kicked for screwing with emission testing. The first three are performing extremely well and VW will be fine when the dust settles. Samsung will be fine too.
Agreed, My entire house is outfitted in Samsung, I'm a definite Samsung "Fan-Boy" and because they have never let me down and always deliver the best most innovative products. My washer, dryer, TVs, Tablets, Soundbars, BT speakers, Watches, Phones, Netbooks, charging docks etc. all Samsung - and that goes for all of my Wife's products and the rest of my family (Brother, Sister, Brother in law, Mom etc.) I sold them on their first Samsung device years and they haven't looked back. I didn't fret once over this recall, I knew it was being blown out of proportion and that Samsung was all over it the best they could be and I was going to be taken care of.
If anything my Brand loyalty has been enhanced because of this, but that doesn't mean i expect Samsung to be perfect always or say they wont ever drop the ball, But I will cross that bridge when I get there, until then Samsung is my brand, and the Note 7 is a GREAT phone and has met and far exceeded my expectations both on aesthetics and performance.
Samsung came through for us on this recall regardless of how people want to perceive their approach, so to those people: please explain how they could have done it better?

I agree that the recall has been handled well, unprecedented to get so many replacements produced and shipped so quickly (I have a replacement already).
However, the CPSC had this to say to BBC News:
Mr Kaye said Samsung should not have tried to do the recall by itself, saying: "Anybody who thinks that a company going out on its own is going to provide the best recall for that company, and more importantly for the consumer, needs to have more than their phone checked,"

- Says the guy who makes money and gets to push his power by issuing recalls. No different than a mechanic saying "Anyone who rotates their own tires is looking to die!"
And sure, of course they did whats best for Samsung, They have to stay is business, both by cleaning up their mess as quick as possible and to their consumers liking (because we are the reason they have a business) no company is stupid enough not to try and please the consumer with their decision.
I'm just confused on the apparent blessing of the recall followed by that statement yesterday.
I knew you all would focus here. It's the problem with forums. I'm asking for honest opinions on the two devices not about the recall. It was a catalyst and now here I am at an impasse. It wouldn't even be a thought had the recall not happened but here we are.

What's different today from the year's long discussion of Android vs. iOS? The iP7+ is as big as a house, has a 1080P IPS panel, has a 2,900mAh battery, no wireless charging, no fast charging, no audio jack, and an eco-system locked down harder than Fort Knox which offers no flexibility and customization. I didn't read your "pros" summary but I'm assuming they're what's already known. What's left to say?

I have to disagree... Before I have my Note 7, I was using my 2011 Note 1 (ran on Samsung Jelly bean stock rom)... No lag has been felt until recently when the apps I am using often are getting more and more RAM demanding...
Samsung vs iPhone should not be seen as Android vs iOS, but then when coming to which to choose, it depends on which best suits your needs (I don't view those who chose iOS over Android are any inferior). Personally I no longer find Android exciting like it used to be, but between Android devices and iPhone, I am still an Android guy. The reason for this is simple: Android has large variety of devices which I can choose from... And this time I chose Note 7 (not because I am loyal to Samsung) as it offers various exciting functions (and ya, I like the S-Pen)... As for iPhone 7 or 7+, I found the design for these device were unappealing...

Now that is a good reply. Thank you for being just up front.
It looks to me like you only want 'on the fence' replies that give you no swing towards either device. I gave you real world use in that it is very smooth on the 2nd release which I presumed would have made a huge difference to your decision considering you mentioned that all was good until the recall announcement.
People have given you material and real world examples of the recall (In my case 10 days!) but you still seem bent on assuming the recall is being handled poorly.
I've read where apple has ignored people being hurt and even killed by the iPhone since 2009. Little girl had glass on her eye from it exploding, a man had third degree burns when biking he fell on it. Others died. Look it up. They said not our fault. Samsung cares more about customers. Imo so im sticking with Sammy. I hope you all find happiness with your devices, stay safe.

Seems like we've all given the best answers we can to your question and reasons why we feel this way, ultimately the decision is yours based on what YOU like and why and how it fits into your life. The recall came up because its why you came into this dilemma in the first place.
We can tell you all day which couch your ass likes better, but in the end you're the only person who can feel the nerve endings in your ass lol, so you have make that decision based off what you like. Its like asking if I like Ham or Roast Beef more. The differences of IOS and Android are very prominent and very much talked about and public, at this point it seems you just want someone to push you in one direction or the other or give you the "go-ahead" but judging from your first post and last post, it seems like you've already chosen the iPhone and no one is gonna stop you, I choose Android wrapped in the Note 7, but that doesn't mean that's the standard everyone should live by.
That's a nice assalogy.
