Will our phone get one clock root? I'm terrified of odin! lol
You have to odin a insecure kernel for one click to work . Most any of the kernels with cwm are what u want . One click was fixed a while back so this is a work around . Just read and check your steps and no problems . If u want to flash roms u are going to want to keep odin around to get back to stock if something screws up . have fun make your phone , your phone .
Also look at youtube there are alot of videos that will walk you thru the whole thing ... no reason to be scared of odin .

No. U have to use odin for root. Don't be scared of it. Its the best tool to have do this phone. Its not hard watch the videos on how to odin. Just make sure the repartition isn't checked before u hit start. Thats it. Just remember thy odin only flashes tar files. Once u use it once you'll love it. I've used to it to flash the original epic probably 25 times.

Really?? I remember you from the OG Epic, so did you never use it w/ your Epic 4G?...I guess I can see that, but as I remember in order to update the modem and get to Gingerbread Odin was needed to do so...you really missed out on some pretty sick work if you stayed on Froyo, but I bet you're loving this new Touch now, huh?
I was scared too coming from HTC devices and all but it was easy as pie!
Your just downloading the tar file plugging in your phone, putting the phone in download mode and sending the file to the phone... very simple...

Dont be afraid just check and double check that the only thing checked is reboot and you cant go wrong. Worse case scenario is you have a bad file and your already in DL mode so ya get another one no biggie

Yea I never upgraded to Gingerbread on the epic, I remember it having a lot of bugs. Then I just stopped looking. I think my charging cord was bad because it just used to hang when I tried.. That's why I'm terrified. lol
I'm surprised I haven't rooted yet, I'm just getting tired of these damn Ads.. want some Ad-free! LoL
Ok so I also came from htc devices what is the easiest way to root and does everything work now if you root such as wifi/3g/4g and stuff, cause I know at first I thought WIFI wasn't working.

Ok Guys i need a way to go back to stock without odin or heimdal my usb port is out of the equation. Only way to get files onto phone is through my sisters EVO. This needs to be no root no custom rom. I have to take my phone in to sprint cause 1.)the usb port 2.) My touchscreen is useless it doesn't work .
Thanks

Make sure superuser is deleted as well. You will still be stuck on whatever modem you are on. I think if it is not EC05 it will mess up the OTA updates.

MTD? Then you are screwed. You can't get back to stock without Odin or Heimdall. You need to repartition. BUT there is an MTD version of the FB15 leak which should look enough like stock to get you through:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522816
That is the best you can do. You should also do the 2 flashable modems to get you to EL30 and delete Superuser before you bring it in.

It depends on how interested the tech is in making sure it is not a software problem. There are a few horror stories about accounts getting flagged but most of the time the techs don't care. Just smile a lot...lol.

This thread scares the hell out of me. A bad USB port on your epic is a fatal blow to your potential sprint insurance coverage. I cant think of anything worse, especially if your on MTD. Although, if your paying for insurance, i dont think it should really matter what firmware/rom you have on your device.
To the OP, you should be fine. As long as you can make it look at stock as possible, the average sprint employee is not smart enough to get into specifics. They are usually pretty cool about it. As a matter of fact, the tech at my local sprint store put gingerbread on my phone a week before it was released using odin (this was before I knew anything about flashing or rooting), most of the tech's do exactly what we do, so dont sweat it too much.

The one I posted a few posts back (post 16) by Bbelos is the closest to complete stock for MTD. Just delete superuser when done. Then you are only left with CWM recovery as evidence.

To use mobile odin you need to download the tar file and not the zip file. Then you need to use open file in odin and find where you put the tar file. What ROMs were you trying to download?
Mobile odin is just like the odin. Only the difference is the platform where it's running. If you downloaded a rom, be sure it has the format which can be recognized by mobile odin. The zip file format which is only supported thru CWM recovery, can not be odined by mobile odin.
If mobile odin cannot locate the rom, it means it simply means that it's not supporting the file that you downloaded.
Be sure that, current mobile odin on ICS, it does not odin the Modem part.
Calkulins the newest one i want to try cm9 idk yet i got stock fc24 and want something different how do i download the tar and not the zip i just checked my files it was the zip lol told u im a noob :screwy:
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
cm9 is not available as a .tar.
To install cm9 you will need to follow the instructions listed on the cm9 installation page exactly, as flashing using the wrong recovery could lead to a brick.
Just a suggestion. As a self described newb, slow down, read read read. There is nothing so amazing in any ROM that is worth running off Willy Nilly and flashing foolishly.
Don't take my tone as harsh. Buying software and not reading as to how to use is a clear sign that you aren't ready to flash. Too many folks have bricked by being impatient.
Read the forums. Read replies. Read, read, read.

Advice - READ A WHOLE LOT. You will most assuredly turn your phone into an expensive paper weight. Or at best end up with a poorly functioning device and bad experience. I understand your excitedness but spend some time - a week or two (minimum) researching and reading these threads and others. You've already managed to get a pre-release build on it. That's good (and bad). This phone is incredible. If you spend the time to understand it you can make it even better. Good luck
Dont worry no offense taken i did read i guess i just didnt understand that u needed a tar and knew u couldnt flash cm9 on odin i got fc24 with no issues i understand directions im not completely illiterate lol ha ha... By the way, once you get used to it you will find Mobile Odin worth the money spent.
I keep the EL 26 (think that is the one) .tar on my sd card, before I flash from one version (I.e. gingerbread to ics or ics to cm, or any combination) I use Mobile Odin to flash 26 first. Once phone rebootsd I hold volume up to get into recovery. Get caulks wipe file and flash it, then whatever you want.
Should be able to find those files in the dev section, if not shoot me a pm and I will provide them.
If i stay on my stock fc24 build and the official ota comes do i just go back to stock gb el29 to getvthe ota then thanks in advance and im gonna take ur advice and read i was just antsty and wanted ics now i have it and got greedy i will read first

Once the ota hits I would just wait for the devs to get a hold of it, then get it tweaked, rooted.

Glad to see you are learning and using this thing. My reason for saying 'good and bad' is a little knowledge can kill. You've probably seen the posts and comments on bricking so you know it's possible. If very experienced developers (like the guys building kernals and repacking ROMs) can brick their phones, imagine how easy it is for us 'regular' folk. My advice is to try a few different setups over a few weeks or days and see what works best for you. Just make sure to follow the installation notes as carefully as possible. As was mentioned Mobile Odin is money well spent and I too keep stock(rooted) tars on my SD card for recovery purposes. I've owned a sh$t load of phones and smart phones and this one is hands down the most customizable I've ever seen. Be careful, have fun and good luck!
I purchased this phone yesterday after a great year with my Evo and two with a Hero before that. Even though I haven't posted alot I've been rooting and customizing my phones for years. I was even to the point with the file system and stuff that I would add and remove things from roms before I flashed them so I feel like I know what I'm doing with an Android phone.
This thing is a whole other animal though as far as I'm concerned. I've searched, I've read and I still don't understand half the lingo used here. I don't even know how to ask the questions I want to ask honestly. I hate having to jump through hoops just to flash a ROM.
I am rooted. Baseband is el29, kernel is 2.6.35.14-rogue_ET-1.4.1+ and build is Calkulin 3.0. I installed Rom Manager from the market and got the official Clockwork Mod Recovery because I didn't like the recovery that was put on my phone when I rooted.
So from here with the setup I explained what roms can I just place on my sd card and flash through recovery after a wipe? I don't want downgrade to a previous anything or change a modem or use Odin because I don't know what any of that stuff means and there is no where I can find that it's explained very well.
I appreciate any help that is offered and I know I come off as negative but so far this phone is extremely intimidating to do anything with and I don't want to brick it. I never worried about bricking my Evo cause I'm not sure that's even possible anymore
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I worked on a friends EVO once and didn't understand half of what you guys had to do to root and flash so the feeling is mutual, lol. First off if you're going to switch to ICS start on the EL26 kernel with CWM. Anything else and you risk a hard brick. Odin is actually the easiest to flash with. Sfhub has Odin one-click that makes it easy as hell.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23478866&postcount=869
And here's a really good how-to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391732
And download mobile Odin, DON'T use ROM Manager. That will almost certainly brick your phone. Just delete it to be safe.
one of the things you're going to have to get used to with this phone, is that the kernels and recoveries are tied together. Its not like any other android phone i ever used that you could swap out kernels and use whichever recovery you wanted.
You have a Samsung phone now. You are in the promised land. Samsung phones are a lot easier to work with than HTC phones.
Basically any ROM here can be flashed using Clockwork Mod Recovery unless it says otherwise. I'd like to point you over to QBKing77's youtube channel. He has a ton of "how to's" and reviews for a lot of ROMs on the E4GT.
http://www.youtube.com/user/qbking77
I'm sure you'd appreciate that. My family uses HTC phones and whenever they want something done to their phone, I tear up and hope that QBKing77 got an EVO since the last time I needed him.
Also the great thing about Samsung is that if you do happen to brick your phone, Odin will save your life.
If you have any question feel free to PM me or something
You cannot use a GB kernel with an ICS ROM and you cannot use an ICS kernel with a GB ROM.
Coming from stock EL29 you can use the Oneclicks to upgrade to the newer FD ROMs or just flash most through CWM unless they state otherwise.
If you do decide to go ICS(FD24 FD26 etc) and want to go back to GB ROMs, you need to flash the EL26+CWM through Odin(which isn't as complicated as you think) and go right to recovery as the phone tries to reboot, then flash the GB rom.
Seriously check out qbking though, he is the biggest help and his videos are phenomenal. Hope that helps a little.

You need to used Odin to flash EL26+cwm.tar. However, you do not need a computer, I use mobile odin android app religously. It is definitely worth the 5 bucks. For mobile odin just keep the EL26+cwm.tar on your phone, when you want to leave a rom open mobile odin app, point it to that .tar and flash. Then you will have the best copy of cwm on your phone and can start wiping/flashing any roms, kernals, or modems.

Thanks for all the help but I'm strongly considering returning this phone. I've read till my head hurts and the most common words I see here is brick. I don't want to take that chance. How anyone could think dealing with an Evo is worse than this I don't understand. With the Evo you put the rom on the sd card, wipe, and flash. No worrying if you have the right modem/kernel/cwm combination. It's a nice phone, but I really regret buying it now. 3g is also slooooooow.

When you download the recovery file, only flash the .md5 file that's inside.

Dude as long as you can see something on the screen then you are soft bricked. You can restore via Odin. Keep trying. If you got nothing on your phone screen, complete darkness then you are hard bricked.

My friend if you got time to wait for your phone then maybe you should use that time find all the proper things needed to root your phone and read up on how not to let this happen again. I am quite sure you want to do everything in your power to not have to go through this again.
If you need a link to recovery/odin to me it means you have not really done your homework on your phone. I know stuff happens but lets try and do our best to not have these Brick threads cause it gets everyone worried..... Jus Sayin

i got this phoine from a friend who had it less than 6 months and when it went out on him he decided on the s3 instead of any kind of repairs, to pro The phone had never had any kind of mods done or attempt of any kind. completely stock but I can only get iinto download and recovery modes. any selection made i n recovery mode just soits back red error messages and nothing else.
So I guess Im stucki about how to proceed in my attempt at recovering this phone and eventualloy rooting it and making it what it could possibly be. I have previously rooted and tweaked phones but never a samsung... asny ahnd all helo and advice is appreciated. Thanx

I do not think it matters since you'll be using a one click, but since you said it was stock it's most likely on ICS. The one click method does everything for you so you do not need odin just download it, extract it to a folder on your desktop, and then click it and click it again, and then run as administrator. Plug the phone into the computer via USB make sure it's in download mode.

freezes at recovery in oneclick
so I dl the one click and it runs through for about 10 seconds then gets to the recovery labled in area next to the green status bar and yellow connected to port window and that is as far as shell go.
You must use a "restore " data one click file. You have no idea what was running previously on phone so you need to go with stock/rooted restore. The "no data " option cannot be used, it can only be used if you are staying on same build, example ics to ics or Jb to Jb.
Use restore and you should be good to go.

would this be a good file then?
so use like the fl24 original TAR (UNROOTED) ?
found here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903252
You must read and comprehend "one click" not tar, one click zip. This oc zip is dummy proof.

Why did you start a second thread for this, and why are you failing to say in this thread that you tried to flash a rom that is for the og Epic 4G? It is quite possible that flashing a rom for a different phone has borked your phone and the only solution will be a jtag.

Good first question.
The second one doesn't seem to apply, yet, since they can still get into recovery/odin modes.
Either they got up and running, or bricked and don't want to post back..
Aarrghh!!!
There is something evil about this.

I hope he got it running. Reminds of when I got the og Epic 4G and 2 days later flashed it with a rom for the international gsm version. I didn't know about XDA at the time and it took a few hours to recover from that. After that I started reading carefully.

Try to flash a GB08 Restore One Click. Not rooted, not deodexed, just a straight up stock restore.
Make sure you are using a good USB cable that is plugged into a good port. Plug the phone in AFTER you have opened the One Click Odin package. You will see the COM port appear then you just need to click start or begin or whatever it says. Give it time to flash.

As to the first question, I am new to subscribing and especially posting to forums so my original post was in the wrong forum and said to have been moved to somewhere but never saw it where they said they moved it. As for the second, figutred it out without the help of you "senior members" appreciated is the help and humility of the people who posted that actually care about the issue...will be adding thanx to those posts
