[Q] Security threat? - HD2 Android NAND Development

This was just posted on Techradar this morning. I'm wondering if any of our ROMS are effected?
any web-connected app can currently make a single android.permission.INTERNET request and gain access to a wealth of user information.
.
.
It's all down to a logging script which HTC introduced in recent software updates;

Help me here... what would be the right section? I was going to ask in the section for my ROM, but thought this forum would be more general.
Searching the HD2 forum for things like "android.permission.INTERNET", "data leak" give hundreds of hits, none of which appear to be relevant.
As for "old news" - sorry, I thought TechRadar would have been up-to-date.

[FAQ] User signature?

Is there a way I can add my own signature on here? I heard that it is in USER CP but the option isnt there ...

This was an effort to combat spam, and it's had a huge impact! You'll be upgraded to a full account after a certain number of posts (5 - 8 depending on the feature)--it happens automatically. Sorry for the inconvenience

It may take time after reaching the 5-8 post limit for it to allow you access, this is because the process runs in the background.
And when you have enough posts, you can edit your Signature in the UserCP (on the left hand side called "Edit Signature").
Or just click here : Edit Signature

People / Bots were Posting generic messages, like "Thanks this is great" or in some cases, actual responses based on words in a thread. The post it's self was not spam (although pretty pointless), but the users signature would contain 3-4 links to an online company of varying levels of trustworthiness.
We used to find one or two of these bad boys a day. Because they didn't create new threads, nor did they make it obvious to the casual observer, they were getting away with it.
I have not seen one of the so called "signature spammers" since the rules were put in place.
Dave
I had the same question...this is an excellent way to manage spam users. Good job, looking forward to delving more into this forum and getting a signature!
I was a bit upset at not being able to have a signature. Thanks Daveshaw for explaining. Its indeed a great way to stop spammers.

Ya the post limit thing when you start a new account is a good idea to keep the spam to nothing..
Been readying these forums for a while now and finally signed up and that was the first thing I went to go do so I could edit mine to say phone type and what rom and all that nifty stuff nice t see I'm not going crazy and it really wasn't there lol

Ya just takes some time lol.. Alot of sites do it that way nowa days... I always forget to come over to these threads to check on things... Always busy in the EVO 3D ones...
I like and dislike the idea.
I just logged into my account to make post (have like none) so am sorta spamming to be able to post solutions to android revolution HD. /sarcasm. My post aren't spam but i'm going to get 8 before midnight tonight!
I can see how it helps, but jeez. Couldnt post in the developer forum for the audio fix solution I made.

But you could post it in General, and then help a few people out while you were there, in Q&A, if your device has one. Don't bother with useless posts, they will be deleted and you'll never get to 10.

Well, you might be right but its not that easy. You know I have experience in those stuff in the development forum, but I have no way to make posts there.
I dont wanna be a sort of spammer by posting stupid stuff to get all the 10 posts.
But this 10 post rule leaves no other way to accomplish...
To find a topic that I can make a useful post takes a lot of time.
If you can't spend the time to make ten legitimate posts before posting in the dev fora, then you don't deserve to post there. This is a developer forum, not a support website.

Oh really? I was a clueless noob total non-developer when I came here and I had no trouble at all helping people who needed links or a little guidance where to find the information they need. XDA works because people help those who help themselves. Do not post useless posts, they will be removed and you'll never get to 10.
Why did this thread get unlocked? Now it's more noobs that can't read and just complain again.

I requested that it remain open. I've helped out others with legitimate issues before here. Also, leaving it open allows mods to track spammers easily.

Please Clean Up This Thread

Please clean up this thread mods...there is so little on actual android development, he rest is off topic or barely on top and hence deserves in Q&A or General !

p.s. I vote for finding some new aggressive mods to clean up the sub forums... alot of repeated questions keep popping up all over the place =(
WE have a Q&A thread for a reason...eg barebones rom is not development, its Q&A, 1080p playback is general until it stops being just speculation.
And hell I love NOLED but it's an app.

What do you understand by "Development"?
If NOLED (application developed exclusivelly for our SGS) is not supposed to be here, then what? Are the ROMs discussions and MODs better candidates?
Should we change the name from "Galaxy S development" to "Galaxy S Technical discussions"?
in my opinion the worst spam topics are the many "bricked my SGS please help immediately"

Developer forum should be for apps, roms, firmwares, etc.
This could relate to this other thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764084
If we can clean the forum and keep it clean (with good active moderators) it should be easy even to merge galaxy s forums and have all interesting information in the right place

Firmwares Technical Feedback /
ROMs /
Rooting /
Tweeks /
MODs /
Applications created by members for our SGS
Yeah, I think topics need to be clarified. Q&A should be "Questions and Troubleshooting"
And development needs to clarify exactly what is covered, otherwise, technically testing new leaked roms might be considered development..

[Q] Should each 'Cook/ROM' have its own section

I think each ROM should have its own section not just a thread. I find searching through 1000+ posts for one bit of info very hard work, and I bet others do as well. Search is good but unless you know the exact wording its not always the best option.
With each ROM having its own section each question will be in its own thread, making finding the answers to repeated questions much easier.
What say the masses ?
Thanks
interesting idea...but think not possible or..?
You know requesting new sections every day would be pain in the arse for moderators?
It's good as it is now.
When you have one sub-forum for each rom then you have a loooooooong list ... and thats not better then so
Questions shouldnt be in dev section - so there are only dev threads -> done
Question about an spezific rom can be posted in the rom thread.
I think this can be achieved through "Related Threads" (With some modification). So that once u open a thread from one developer all this threads in the same section apear at the bottom.
Just a wild idea
Maybe the mods can make the most useful/best roms sticky...
agree! very hard and sometimes slow to search through 10,000 posts .. it 's often a nightmare to follow the thread

even with search button.. e.g. you search for an issue on battery.. you see someone who asked the question... then i must scroll down(or move next page) to search if someone actually replied and gave a solution to the issue (assuming a there's a reply or solution to the question)... in between you have tons of other unrelated questions/replies/opinions/thanks etc... lol i think you know what i mean

The masses say no. We like asking the same questions all over again, or even better opening the new threads for every query we have.
Your idea is good but what you propose can't be done. It can't be avoided as it would be a forum utopia sort off. Google is more powerful than forum search. Good info doesn't necessarily have to come from XDA.
And for starters this thread is in totally wrong section.
How about a section for roms with sense and a section for roms without sense? or maybe section for ports from other devices and a section for "almost" stock roms. Mabye 2 - 4 subcategories would be a good idea. Another good idea would be that the cooks would use a specific format for the thread names like "Update/Date - Rom name - Version - Cook".
just my two cents in some bad english ^^
Questions or Problems Should Not Be Posted in the Development Forum
Please Post in the Correct Forums and Read THIS
Moving to Q&A

What forum software does xda-developers runs on

Is phpBB, vBulltin, or any other?
PS: Is xda-developers forum software capible of showing the thread open time?
I often found it is difficult to tell which is newer one, until I click into it. Kinda time wasted just to see the freshness of thread.

vBulletin. Not sure what you mean by thread open time, the default sort is with the threads with the latest posts at the top. The stickied threads are at the top of course, so you might have to scroll down in some forums to see the threads with the very latest posts in there.
This might help: [GUIDE] - XDA New User Guide - The Visual Guide.

Ahh, I see what you meant by thread open time now. No problems with your English, I misunderstood. No, I don't see a way to sort by the start date. It is generally expected here that the first post of ROMs or guides get updated, so whenever it was started wouldn't matter.
Thank you,

Sorting them based on post count might work, as the most active rom threads will have tons of posts but sorting them based on last post (default) is better imo.
Can also sort according to 'Threads / Thread Starter', have no idea what those do besides mixing all the threads and confusing me. :silly:

Nope, that's for new forum requests. OP is asking for something different.
This would be a @bitpushr (possibly @MikeChannon) thing.

Possibly both correct.
You can't select a device in profiles if the device does not have a dedicated set of forums.
So to be able to get a set of forums it would need a request in the forum request thread. For that to stand a chance of being added though (it not being a new device), there would need to be quite a few threads already created (I do see a few but.....)
If there are some threads, (let's say between 20 and 60) then we might not add a forum but we might add a special tag so users can find them together via device search.
