Bing maps and navigation. No turn by turn voice navigation - wtf Microsoft?
Swype - I am addicted to swype. Microsoft should buy those guys out.
Those two issues are preventing me from switching back to Microsoft from android. So frickin' close.
Uh, what? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't mango had turn by turn/voice nav since the first beta?
As for Swype I dunno if this help/is relevant but... http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/21/sliding-keyboard-its-like-swype-but-for-windows-phone-7/

Bing maps does have turn by turn nav. and as for swype, I could never get into it, honestly I can type things faster on the wp7 keyboard than I ever could with swype and with very little errors. the word correction and completion in wp7 is world class.
The OP may not be in US/UK, Bing nav doesn't work outside of those two countries.
As for the keyboard, the WP7 keyboard is the best around, but SWYPE is not a keyboard. It's in a whole other level. And it blows the WP7 keyboard out of the water.
Also, the word correction, while very competent, is an absolute and utter fail for some of the most basic words. Like "dl", will never change to "do". "Ill" never changes to "I'll". Very annoying.

Nokia maps are coming. Don't count on swype.
Nokia Maps may be locked to Nokia devices, the same way HTC Locations/Connected Media/YouTube/whatever is locked to their devices. Duh? Not everyone thinks Nokia is the Messiah, and not everyone wants their phones.
Bing Navigation is terrible. They need to remove the need to tap. Even rerouting is interrupted because you have to tap to do that as well. It's useless while driving. I wouldn't even use it on a bicycle.
Swype isn't really needed. TBQH, all major platforms have good default soft keyboards. I've never really seen a need to use a third party or OEM keyboard on anything but a Samsung device since they ripped out the default Android keyboard and left only Samsung Keyboard and Swype. Not to mention, Swype isn't that good, anyways, and it adds mistakes to its dictionary way too much when you're tap typing, which comes back later to destroy your accuracy and can lead to some embarassing IMs/emails/SMSes.
All Microsoft needs is something similar to Auto-Text or Auto-Replace on Blackberries/Samsung keyboard so we can use shortcuts and have the keyboard automatically expand it to a phrase i.e. I type "ill ttyl." and the phone expands it to "I'll talk to you later." Which can speed up typing a ton without having the person on the other end bombarded by shortcuts.

I agree. The blackberry text features (and some others) would be sweet.
Bing map has turn by turn navigation. I thought I wouldn't like it cause you have to constantly press the screen to get updated info and voice commands but after using it for a few weeks I got used to it. Its not as bad as it first seems. You get used to it pretty soon and its just as competent as google maps.

Bing map can only do the navigation when the search language is set to those 5 EU languages (and Local Scout only available when set to English UK/US), but no navigation in CHT/CHS/KOR interface (even change the search language to above mentioned)......
Really want to know how Microsoft is going with the multilingual stuffs. Hope things will be improved when Nokia comes in.

Bing maps does not have turn by turn voice guided navigation. Requiring users to constantly tap the screen is not voice guided. It is foolishly dangerous, and in many places illegal.

it worked really well the times I've used it, u just have to tap to hear the voice say turn, the screen still highlights when the turn is and a little tone plays when it's time for the turn. if ur too deaf to hear it well then I don't know what to say.

I wrote Ill because the phone will almost always auto-correct it to I'll. It had nothing to do with that, it was about the ttyl part, where it's impossible to make WP7 expand that to a phrase where it is possible on BB and Android soft keyboards.
Wow, people are just so damn dumb today...
The GPSTuner app is very well done, and affordable. I prefer the Garmin app for most trips (especially now that it has been updated to Mango, and also supports RunUnderLock), but both work well.

i switched from blackberry 8900 only because it didnt have 3g so the internet and maps were slow...
otherwise it was a great device it was very quick OS
when i want to call someone i just type in their name and it gives me option to call or email or txt.
i open my pictures and brows thru them i have a menu option to use the image as a wallpaper or other actions
theres a camera flash
theres a 3.5 headphone jack
theres a trackball!!!!
i have never had to use two hands to do any operation on that phone.
every lil action could be done with one hand and that is the best feature of blackberry.
i understand this phone is not blackberry.
i do like the phone
i love the big screen and ridiculous resolution!!!!(something blackberry lack for now)
i love the speakerphone and the face down/spkr phone feature
i definitely love the free apps and other tweaks that are available for this device.
the regedit the file browser the millions of settings
the micro sd card being on the side
now the bad parts
the user interface is painfully slow and unresponsive.
to make a call i have to press the talk button then press contacts(because scrolling with your finger is worthless it will catch on first damn contact and start calling it right away)
and then you have to cancel the call and start over
this time thru your phonebook...
and to txt i still havent figured out an easy way to start a txt message for a contact from your recent calls or phone book
theres no button for camera shutter its a big ugly ahole looking image on the screen.
it is definitely not made for finger operation
i have to use stylus for almost everything
browsing without stylus is stupid.
the zoom bar works whenever it feels like and so far only in 2 programs
itsa windows OS and wtf theres no landscape or soom bar feature in internet explorer but they are both available in opera?? makes no sensei
the display is already loose even though i only tilted it maybe 15 20 times
theres no option to set wallpaper from image preview!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like every other phone ( even motorazr had that feature)
please help me to figure this phone out

1. Regarding the interface being slow, this is subjective. It also depends on what ROM you have. The ROM I have loaded is quite fast in my opinion.
2. You can also make a call just like a blackberry. When you're in the home screen, just slide open the keyboard and type the name of the person you want to call. The dialer will automatically launch and filter your contacts according to what you typed.
3. Easy way to text someone in your contacts. Go to the SMS tab. Tap the icon for new message. In the "To" field, just start typing the name of the person. It will autocomplete.
4. If you want to text someone you recently spoke with, open the dialer by pressing the call hardware button. Now you can see who you recently spoke with. On the right of each contact, there's an icon that looks like a contact card. Tap it. Here you can choose to call or email. You can also text by tapping on the icon to the right that looks like a speech bubble. That's 3 actions to get to the compose screen.
5. Yes, there's no dedicated button for the camera shutter. But you can compensate by mapping other keys to do the job. I've mapped the volume up key to act as the camera shutter only in the camera app. If you don't want to map keys, you can also open your keyboard and use the enter key as the shutter button.
6. My experience regarding the stylus is the opposite of yours. I never have to use it. I think it's because you need to understand how to use a resistive touch screen. Tip: apply pressure.
7. Zoombar is indeed limited in its usefulness. But it works in more than 2 programs. Just off the top of my head, it works in Word, Excel, Opera, Album, and Adobe Reader.
8. I never use Internet Explorer and, honestly, neither should anyone. So, I don't really care about it's features.
9. My display is still nice and sturdy. But experiences vary from one to another.
10. If you're using Sense/Manila/TF3D, you can only set your wallpaper via the settings tab or with HDWall. If you're just using the standard Today screen, it can be set via the Today settings or the WinMo default Pictures and Videos app. But I'm someone who doesn't change their wallpaper every other hour. So, this doesn't bother me at all.

Do you have the stock ROM or did you flash a custom ROM? Custom ROMs usually have a lot more speed, but some are unstable. Since you only have 4 days, I think you should only flash your ROM if you have at least 24 hours total of free time (to work out some kinks, and if you do return it, you need to reflash the stock ROM and stuff).
To make a call, just bring up the phone dialer (Talk/Send hardware button). To find names, just tap in the name in the dialer (ie. if you want to call John, just press/dial "5646" ["J" is in 5, "O" is in 6, "H" is in 4, "N" is in 6]; the phone is smart enough to try to recognize the name you want); you don't need to scroll down the whole list for John.
To text someone from the Call history in the phone dialer screen, press the small icon to the right of the name (looks like a business card), and that brings you to a screen with options to contact them.
Camera shutter... can't blame you there, but if iPhone pulled that off, I guess HTC felt they could pass that virtual "shutter" button.
**The key to maneuvering in the screen (resistive screen; needs pressure to work), is by using your nails. Think of your nail as a stylus, and you should be better.**
IMO, Pocket Internet Explorer is horrible (interface and speed). Opera Mobile is better.
Don't know what you mean by "image preview." Sorry.
well when im browsing thru images in album i can set wallpaper from there. because the default wallpaper setup program doesnt preview the images it just gives you the thumbs and once you click it the wallpaper is set...
the touch screen is the problem tho.
i dont have nails so alot of times when i try to use my thumb it will catch onto something and i end up waiting untill it processes through or wrong person dialing.
and the damn keyboard button is the worst i have to press it at least 3 times to get rid of onscreen keyboard.
i have itouch and its so much easier to use with finger especially when browsing.
internet explorer doesnt bother me i like it because it reenders webpages differently. i got used to it when i was learning web design since it would show most accurate page layout and graphics by default.
i was on stock TMO rom that came out of the box with the phone.
iupdated to EnergyROM_28011_RHODIUM_25.Dec.2009_StandardM2.5_MaxManila
and it is even slower now
is there a specivic rom you guys suggest that i should try to see if it speeds up.
i want to see if the 6.5 tmobile update will bring any improvements or not.
Try MightyMike's ROM
I suggest you try one of MM's roms. I only suggest you try one of his stable releases. He has several works in progress, but his latest stable release is seeming to be very good and snappy. It also uses less system RAM.

Also, depending on when you purchased your phone, and from whom, you may have more time than you think. Many carriers offer extended return times over the Christmas season. I do believe that VZW offers all phones purchased from at least Nov 27 to be returned 'till Jan 15. Those specs. could be off a little due to poor memory, but it is something like that. Might be worth looking into.
Good Luck, and I hope you end up extremely happy with whichever device you end up with!

MM's ROMs are for CDMA only. Fuzzysig just said he had a stock T-Mobile ROM. Verizon, Telus, and Sprint are CDMA. T-Mobile and AT&T are GSM. If he flashed a CDMA ROM onto his GSM phone, that would be a disaster!

Yeah, the new keyboard buttons are stupid. You just have to press all the way at the left edge of the button (took some practice for me).
I love EnergyROMs (my favorite ROM is still EnergyROM Dec.4 Leo build 28008). The reason it's even slower is because you have MaxManila, which I heard slows down the system a bit.
I recommend the ROM I'm currently running (check the sig). It's sort of lite, but has some apps that help you tweak the phone (like EnergyROMs, but less apps; the flaw of EnergyROMs, IMO, is that NRG puts in a lot of apps so it's ready to go, but that starts counting towards bloatware). Valkyrie ROMs are light on memory (running 5 apps and RAM usage is still below 75%), and they're pretty smooth. The one I have is using the new Leo package, which has HTC landscape support! But because it's a new Leo package, you sill can't use Manila tweaks like HDWalls and Maxmanila (developers need to rewrite scripts, I think). Here's a post with 4 screenshots of the ValkyrieROM LEO in landscape.

Nice catch!! I'm very glad you caught this before any harm was done. I completely missed that aspect. I would have felt Horrible if I was the cause of someone bricking their device from my advice!
With this new information, I suggest that you first switch to Verizon and then run Mighty Mike's ROMs!!
Regarding GSM/CDMA ROMs
The thought just ocurred to me. The Touch Pro 2 is a World phone, and therefore has both CDMA and GSM capability. I have no idea if this makes sense or not, but I was just wondering if the CDMA/GSM ROM issue is relevant in this case?? Is the hardware different between T-Mobile/AT&T and VZW/Sprint or is it the same?
Maybe I am totally off in left field, I don't know....

I'm not an expert, but what I think is by "World" phone, they refer to the capability of being used anywhere due to the Quadband 2G support. If the device is from a GSM company, the device will only come with a GSM-compatible hardware radio. If the device is from a CDMA company, it has the capabilities of using both GSM and CDMA bands, but the hardware radio is still native to CDMA.
And again, this is what I think prohibits us from flashing GSM ROMs onto CDMA devices and vice versa. If I'm wrong, I would appreciate if someone with more knowledge could clear this up. Unless, of course, this is one of the "just don't do that" rules!

That's essentially correct and close enough to the truth for govt work..
Thanks for the Clarification.
I kinda figured that it would be too good to be true. I am still somewhat confused how the CDMA radio accesses GSM signal, but I will leave it for another time in another thread...

That is the answer. Bing.

MS has already announced number and email and web address detection in WP7. And it already exists in WM6.x
So what's your point? Bing is not new, nor is that feature.
The feature I would like to see most from Bing is Voice control for the entire WP7 OS.
What I am saying is that it does "copy" and "paste", apart from picking up the address and Phone number for US(at least). It does not copy and paste at pixel level. That is all.
What in the world are you trying to say?
Great example of why you actually need copy/paste, thanks. What should I do if I want to email the address?

Just click on the underlined email address and you'll go to the email app with the address already filled in.
What is copy & paste at the pixel level?
I don't see the underlined email address on the screenshots, sorry.
I've had enough frustrations with OneNote Mobile not having Copy/Paste. Now a modern phone not having it is just ridiculous. I use this function all the time-if not every day then every week for sure. Everyone, including Microsoft seems to have forgotten about note-taking. So they have One Note without Copy/Past and Word Mobile without it either? what?! Hello!

The screenshots are Bing for WM6.x not for WP7. Supposedly this functionality is more advanced in WP7. My guess is that the address would be detected by the OS and options would be available to you to act on that address. Don't know for sure, but that's how it was explained by MS.
I WM, if someone SMS'es a phone number to you, it is detected and you can perform actions on it such as calling the number. That is far more convenient than C&P that number then loading the phone dialer and pasting the number in there.
Only in Office-type apps do I see a need for copy and paste. I believe they said C&P is implmented within those apps.

It may be more advanced than WM6 but it'll never work well. There are just too many ways to write addresses - what if I send you an email in response to a question about where we should meet, and I'll reply - "coffee place on corner of main and franklin"? And the meeting is going to happen, say, a month from now? How are you going to save this address from my email? Will your smartlinking recognize it? No freakin' way. Don't delude yourself by repeating these mantras.

Well, that's a good one, but who's to say you can't attach an email to a calendar item or contact? Personally, I would like to be able to do something like that over C&P.
I'm not making excuses for no C&P, but there are more than one way of doing things.

Look, it's not like I prefer C&P to "smart" stuff. Of course smart stuff is better. The problem is that it's impossible to do in a way that'll cover all scenarios. I can come up with examples forever (like, what if there's a typo in the URL, like users here sometimes post deliberately, because they aren't allowed to post links - what the heck are you going to do with that?). And sometimes that could be a real pain in the neck. Like I encountered once with a pre-3.0 iPhone - an email contained a link with directions, and there was no way to click it, and no C&P to the rescue. Sure I didn't die as a result, but I wasted 3 hours looking for the damned place in the middle of nowhere. For every example you can probably come up with a solution, but there will be another example that'll require another solution etc. That is the whole point of C&P - you can make those 80% core use cases easy with smart stuff, but then you add something trivial and easy like C&P and that'll take care of everything else! It's just not an "either... or" situation, and that's why Microsoft's excuses are just lame.
I have to agree with you, but if MS were under a time constraint and had to choose between smart linking and C&P, I'm glad smart linking came first. C&P will show up in due time. In the meantime, you can go to the school supply section at Walmart and buy a copy and paste toolkit (pencil and paper)
Walmart announced like 5 times that they're entering Russia, but never got the nerve to actually go ahead and do it.
Anyway, congrats on getting to the WP7's target audience. Guess you're not using Outlook Tasks either, huh?
Wish I could be there as well, because I love many aspects of this new OS, and I'm rather optimistic about the prospects of getting access to some serious native APIs in WinCE via jailbreaking, which hopefully will be done via lowering the privilege thresholds rather than having to do a privilege escalation hack (which will open the door to pirating apps and therefore will be chased by Microsoft's updates).

Tasks really isn't useful enough for me. Too much data entry to achieve nothing. Maybe if it were tied in with the phone dialer, calendar, contacts, GPS awareness, etc, I would actually use it.
Thought so.
Tasks are reminders essentially, they're more of an alarm thing than a calendar thing, if you look at just phone use. They are a very different thing when you use them on a corporate Exchange server, where you can assing them to somebody, track progress, get reports etc.
^^^ Yeah, I've never been able to put it to good use in my daily life.

Why not? Isn't that what progress is all about?
There was a time when professionals/geeks could not understand how an OS could work without command line instructions. But now we have it. None of the smartphones have command line instructions.
There are still folks (apparently of European descent) who cannot believe that an automatic transmission can work in 95% of scenarios as good as a manual. How wrong they are.

Rule#1
Never develop a program based upon exceptions. That is poor decision making.
Program to take care of the 95% (the meat) of the requirements. And do it perfect.
Eg. Folks who buy a minivan based upon the 5% chance that they will need to haul 9 people for about 15 times a year. Crazy.
Same for people who buy a Truck so that they can haul a Christmas tree once a year.
LOL!!! How embarassing for Microsoft. There is a bug on WP7 with some carriers where if you press search, you get Yahoo, not Bing

It's just O2 in the UK I beleive. I raised this last week when asking about customisations that carriers may have made, and appears to be intentional by O2. Though I get the impression Microsoft where not aware and may not be happy.

It's the carrier, look at the Samsung Galaxy S on US Verizon - Fascinate - an Android phone, running Google services, yet you press search and Bing! you got.
Yeah, we all know what a crap carriers could load if it's on them. However that was one of the promises for Windows Phone 7 - no more bloatware. Now what are we seeing - the same s#it. For me pressing the search and bringing Yahoo, 360 (Orange users knows what I mean) or whatever is utterly annoying, especially there is not a way for changing that.
It has always been known (since the first leaked documents on WP7) that the carriers and the OEMs can, indeed, change some aspects of the phone.
However, they are VERY limited in what they're allowed to do. I didn't think they could change the search button, but I did know that they could change the default search provider within IE.
Casey
I'd love to change it to google... Bing just doesn't give me what i'm looking for... it's really terrible for me...
Well, I did not read every letter of the "early leaked" docs about WP7, however I did read something like the following on many different sources: Windows Phone 7: Bing only default search option . So now, when it is already known this isn't exactly true, I am quite disappointed. I like the idea about sameness user experience on every device, but I am afraid it is now somehow compromised with substitution of the default search in IE.

For my job I need to use a search engine at least 5 times a day. I find Bing to be awesome! I find google to be so boring and depressing.
I would be really unhappy though if Yahoo came up every time I clicked search.
I guess your only choice is to click home first before search whenever in the browser

Most carriers really irritate me. As if it wasn't enough to rip us off, and cap our broadband. They go and install their crap on our phones too!
I'm fairly confident that eventually we'll be able to flash generic WP7 ROMs to carrier-modified devices to avoid these stupid types of things. It'll be a while though, seeing as WP7 is brand new and not necessarily attractive to the usual breed of hardcore 6.1 / 6.5 modders and cooks on xda-developers.
For now, if I ever have to search while I'm in IE I'm first hitting the Start button and then Search.
Really, I hope users can do this themselves with ease, I am not a huge fan of Bing... Although it is a million times better than Yahoo xD.

Yeah.
I think carriers need to stop putting their rubbish on OUR phones. It would also be nice if they remove the internet caps too
On the HD2, when in Opera browser, you can type in the URL field opera:config and get access to a lot of the browser settings. Maybe there is something similar for ie on the HD7 to change the search engine????
Also that is not all O2 have changed. They have removed the option to use voice search when using bing. Normally you would hold the windows button down and say "find cash point" for example.
Even the people tab has been changed as when you click on a contact's address, you should be taken direct to the address on bing maps. Alas O2 decided to remove this feature too! That's THREE things thay have changed. Sucks
Boy i can imagine how much fun AT&T is going to have with the search button lol.

AT&T has never been into those modifications, unlike Verizon. Mictosoft has taken care of the usual AT&T annoyances: their crappy preloaded modofied Opera Mini, TeleNav, MobiTV, and other associated bloatwares. WP7 doesn't sideload like droids so they don't have to worry about that. Captivate was actually decent, and they didn't do much to the Pre/Pixi.
I wouldn't expect any surprisrs, TBH.
Bing is a great search enging, though. I had it set as my homepage simce forever. Google even copied their image search UI. Bing Maps is good, as well.

Well that's a relief I guess, with all the garbage they loaded on my Samsung Jack win mo 6.5 im looking for a upgrade without all of that crapware.
I had a jack. Crapware on winmo never bothered me because the OS has supported installing applications to sd cards since forever... Like nearly a decade.
Just had to remap a couple buttons on the phone, that's about it.

Bing IS the only search option on the o2 HD7. You press search from almost anywhere and you get taken to the bing search app.
What o2 HAVE changed however, is if you press search from WITHIN IE you get Yahoo. This is within the browser only.

8 background tasks memory in use. (seems no more than 256mb?)
8773 vs 8107 boot(no task) memory in use.(seems less than mango 8107)
and some changes (messaging/maps setting)
In Tango Unlocked Emulator preview that location Icon seems not yet.

How about languages?
As all are aware, tango build will support 120 languages.
Does any one have the list of languages supported by tango?
I am just curious about Indian languages.. (which or any will be supported)
Aslo not sure how they will be supported?
- Will it include UI in those languages
- Or only tango will be able to render apps and websites developed in those languages
Fantastic...
How is IE9? Is the promised "Find on Page" feature back? Also did they add a tabs button? Or do we really have to wait a full year for this?
Anyway the other changes in Tango are minor bt very welcomed, certainly the rotation of the maps and the 8 multitask cards.
Are there any changes in the setting... specifically ability to setup mms with unlocked devices? Also curious if there is the ability to leave wifi on during "sleep" mode (screen off).
My phone has had those maps settings for a long time now... unless you are talking about the fact that yours is missing the 'tap to read directions' setting.
Is there a heading pointer in the maps app in Tango, like on every other phone. I can't use WP7 as a GPS device because I make wrong turns due to not knowing which way I'm facing on the map in unfamiliar places.
Still need to tap while navigating? Playing with your phone while driving is now illegal here and they can pull you over for it even if you've done nothing else wrong...
Can you send video off the device in eMail or MMS yet?
Is there a URL auto-shortening for SkyDrive links sent yet?

There are 3rd party GPS apps that do that. Same as all other OS's.
See above...
MMS yes, don't know about Email.
::Shrugs:: & don't care. It'll be hard integrated into the OS. Why would you need the URL's?
P.S. Here we go again... ::sigh::

of course but I mean a button not a menu item, like in pre mango. Since there were a lot of complaints about the lack of a tabs button and missing "find on page". I would like to know if users will have to wait for a year for a feature to come back if MS decides to take it out against the will of the public.
About the maps, does it utilize the compass and does rotation now works while walking? Or does it still only works when navigating? This should not require a third party app imo.

it never left, mango just made it less noticeable.
Apps will tombstone when they are far enough back in the back stack and the phone runs low on memory. So if you have an App consuming the maximum 90 MB allowed on 256 MB devices and it gets pushed back it tombstones immediately when a new App starts.
But if the first App useses only 8 MB and all the others as well you get to start ~ 10 Apps before the first gets thrown out of memory and therefore has to be tombstoned.
On regular devices it is the same but they have more time before they run out of memory (unless there's lots of background tasks consuming memory as well but they are rather limited in that regard (aside from the resource intensive task which only runs while on charging power).

Yes I know, I thought for a second they implemented rotation by the compass in the maps app, without the need to actually navigate, like iOS has. That when you open the app it will rotate in the direction you are pointing it to. Currently the maps app is just static if you dont navigate.
No IE changes?
Multitasking
Does it still have multiple instances of the same app while multitasking? For instance, do the settings still take up multiple windows? It would be great to know that an app I was previously running won't be knocked off the list because the messaging app is open in like 4 different windows.

Since this is stripped down and a lot of paid Swype crap isn't included. Think that's what actually made it laggy. Imho

Not sure what phone your using this ON?
But you can set one handed use and it'll make the keyboard smaller. I'm fine with it regular size being it'll be too small for me to use, pushed too one side.

Swype is, once again, usuable. I was unable to find an alternative app I was happy with, and had to find a pirated version of Swype (despite being a paid user) so that I could downgrade to one that was less laggy.
Quick question, anyone else having issues connecting Swype to Gmail. I always get the message "We are unable to verify the name associated with this application because it runs on your computer, as... (the rest is not visible" when trying to log in

Answered my own question here: http://forum.swype.com/showthread.php?11584-gmail-social-integration-problem/page5&
Gmail integration has been temporarily removed from Swype for the latest release (version 1.6.19). The issue discussed in this thread required an overhaul of our existing feature, and we wanted to be able to commit to a more complete improvement.
From my s4 with oppo keyboard, working fine, thank you
