[Q] ROM & Kernal - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently on the SyndicateROM with the genocide kernal. i would like to try a new rom. My question is this, if i want to try a new rom do i have to install a kernel again or do some roms have the kernel built in to them??

If you have clockwork mod, backup. That way restoring will be easy as it will restore EVERYTHING. As to your question, it really depends. Some rom's have the kernel built in, some don't. What do you plan on trying?

i wanted to try randomROM. i just want to make sure i do not brick my phone. i did it once before and have to have it replaced and i dont want to go through the process again.
also are there any stable gingerbread roms? would like to see something gingerbread before ice cream sandwich gets announced.

I can't find if a kernel is included with it...but Genocide should work just fine if your looking at randomrom 2.2. And you won't brick your phone from a rom flash. You'll almost always have Clockwork. And by stable, there's tons of leaks, but some of them have random reboots (which are actively being worked on!!). If you can live with that, try random rom 2.3

cool. Thanks for the answer. Does the random reboots cause anything to crash? or is just like i rebooted my phone myself?

It...kinda...crashes lol. I haven't had that many, but most of mine and other people's were when the phone was idle. It doesn't cause data corrupting I don't think. But I could be wrong

ok. it is something i will defiantly think about. I will try RandomRom tomorrow. I wish that samsung would get going on fixing its updates to reasonable times. They have added some of the most well known android programers and still nothing.
sorry for the small rage rant. i just want updates in a reasonable time.

[Q] What do you think of Baked Snack 2.0?

All politics aside, this seems like a great ROM.
Worth a look/see in my opinion.
Links removed.....Bonsai!
Seems slower to me than ACS Frozen even with the Kernel but its a nice ROM yea but IMO ACS is better also looks like some good kernels are about to come out ^_^
I don't like it but that's my opinion. Acs is alit better than that rom. I also have seen the arguments with the.developer and I don't know anything other that what I read but for him to be banned tells me something. I don't blame konane to be upset and he handled it very professionally. Stand up Guy.

I'm testing it out as of today. I liked Syndicate a lot but I was having issues with battery life. I was told BakedSnack has awesome battery life but we'll see. So far it's blehhhish in comparison but I'll have to gauge my charge to really see.
fyi the kernel is compatible with syndicate rom if you want that extra 80 Mhz.

I flashed the kernel and got the 1280, but in the About Phone it comes up as the same kernel I had previously. Is that normal?
Cool I actualy didnt know that. Maybe I'll use the kernel with Syndicate bc overall that rom is great, I just need something that helps out with battery life more.
is anyone having issues with the 1280 overclock on Baked? i'm thinking maybe my phone can't handle it 'cuz it seems to completely freeze with that setting.

Nope, I usually have it set to 1000/100, but I ran 1280 and it worked fine.

thats cool. i scaled it down to 1000/100 after the phone froze, and now i'm getting all kinds of force closes, especially with the market.... can't download anything at all. it sucks 'cuz i love how the ROM moves and feels, but it just isn't working in my phone.... any advice at all? i even odined to stock EB13 before flashing.
I would reflash with a thorough wipe of dalvik, cache and data again. I'm noobish but everyone seems to say that route may help with a bad flash. Which this sounds like. You're one of the lucky few

How does this kernal compare to syndicate's?
About the whole stealing dilema, k0nane said that he only took a couple scripts and syndicate is open source so anyone can use it. But hero over is a **** still and should credit others and make his rom free.

dang, yeah, i already did all the wipes numerous times, starting from stock, the whole 9 yards.... the whole 10 yards in fact, lol. i've flashed the ROM this way 3 times now, and all 3 times, same stuff. oh well, i guess it's not meant to be, right now. haven't gotten much, or any, feedback in his forum yet either.

apparently he used the genocide kernel as a base.. when he was releasing roms on the regular he always would forget the small stuff like that. and another instance he used the same install script so thats why you get the team viper logo when you install the kernel.
I'm running syndicate rom and cannot get the bakedsnack Kernel to work for 1280. setcpu says "cannot autodetect frequencies. this may be an issue with root access". I have tried flashing a few times and same result. any suggestions?

Flashing that kernel broke your root.... same thing happened to me. Just reroot with CWM 3.0.0.6. Then please let us know how the 1280 step works on your phone, it seems to work for some but not for me.
He's right if you don't flash baked snack rom over the kernel I believe you'll have to reroot

I flashed the ROM and then after a reboot, the kernel. I seem to have root still, but I was also on Syndicate before BS, could that be it since they're so similar?

I haven't had the time to do the re-root yet however, I can still install the baked snack rom and the kernel will work to get me 1280. I can also re-install syndicate without a re-root. but syndicate still wont work with BS kernel.. so my root seems to still be ok..? Either way i will try and re-root with CWM 3 when i get home, try again and share my results.
as far as the Baked Snack Rom goes though It seems to been a tiny bit laggy when i compare to a few other roms out right now. Even with the 1280 overclock. The quadrant scores and smartbench scores are pretty low, however my Linpack was 17.2 mflops which is the best i have gotten. If i can just get this BS kernel to work on the syndicate rom!

Yeah, I was gonna say that maybe root is partially broken, lol.... at least when it comes to apps being granted superuser permission. When I flashed the Baked kernel over Syndicate, I couldn't do anything that required root access(including using setcpu to overclock), but re-rooting fixed that.

Why, so people can go on downloading a supposed "stable" release only to find out it wasn't so "stable" to begin with?
I LOVE the CM crew and all they do for the scene, but I had a very terrible experience with 7.0.0 on the DINC. First it was jittery video (which I lived with for over a week) and then all my installed apps just suddenly quit working.

A "stable" ROM should never require an end user to try a different kernel.
Anyway, I ended up back on OMGB and couldn't be happier. The only FC I can find is due to installed software (Astro SMB Module).

Just because someone posts something in Q&A doesn't mean they aren't rooted. Your attitude sucks man. My personal opinion would be to reflash and wipe I have been running the latest stable release for as long as its been out and been updating to the latest version asap and have had zero problems other than those cause by user error. Perhaps you did something. Gotta release 9/10 problems are user generated.

Dude you should always try different kernals with roms. You must be new. It is stable I've had zero problems. As stated previously 9/10s of problems are user error and with the ignorance you are displaying I'm gonna say you did something. Just a tip when you wipe you should multiple times becayse 3.X wipes like a dirty person.

Don't let my post count fool you. I've been around since the beginning with the G1. Final, Stable, these words suggest newbie usage. Final builds should come with a final kernel. Unless you're a dev, tester, or need something specific for a certain application then you shouldn't need to kernel hack.

I understand how memory wipes work, so I don't believe the multiple wipe requirement. However, if it is an issue with ClockworkMod 3.x then I do apologize for any nay say here against CM. However, that doesn't really explain why 7.0.2 and 7.0.2.1 came out so soon after 7.0.0, and I wasn't the only one with video troubles in 7.0.0.

[Q] CM 7 Problems

O.k so here is the thing guys. I'm no noob but I'm no master either. Ok so I have a Evo 4G. It's been hacked since the first day that I got it (unrevoked). I'm currently running CM 7 RC 2 I believe and It's not that bad. The thing is that I always get these kind of weird bugs. I know I should be posting this in the CM7 forum but it wont let me because i'm fairly new to the site. Anyway I have always used CM and it's always been super buggy; even with the RC's. So my question to all of you is, am I doing something wrong when i install? I mean I used rom manager to install the rom, I do a backup and everything. Am I nandroiding wrong or something. For ex. my main android keyboard always freezes or just doesn't show up or I just get the most random force closes and other things like that. Help please because if I have to I will dump this CM, I'm getting kind of tired of it, but I just want to make sure it's not me that has the problem. Thanks in advance.
First of all, flash the latest nightly or the latest stable release, with a clean install and gapps, and that could fix things right there. Just backup your apps in titanium.
And make sure you're wiping properly. Instead of flashing the newer version as an update, do a full wipe. The last time I had issues like that with a rom, I went back and wiped everything multiple times and flashed a format all zip. Everything ran flawlessly after that.
I'd ditch Rom Manager too, and learn to flash manually. I don't fully trust Rom Manager to do what I would do, so I've never used it.
My Evo + xda Premium App = This post.
Both of the above posts are correct. Also add to them, CM7 is NOT meant for the Evo, meaning there is always bugs in it. The CM team does a great job, but there is no way to get rid of all bugs when porting a rom to many different phones. This is why there is a nightly release every night, fixing little things in each release.

Pretty sure Toast and Cyanogen would disagree.
What I meant was, it wasn't made for the evo. It's a port that has been coded to work, meaning there will be bugs.

By that logic, it's not made for any device and won't work smoothly anywhere. It's AOSP, with a bunch of improvements. AOSP starts out as device independent and has to be tailored (or "ported") to any of the devices it runs on. I'm not saying there aren't bugs, but it's not that it "isn't made for it." It's just not perfected yet. It's pretty darn close though.

it's technically only 'meant' for nexus s, yet the team supports it on like 30 phones. the evo is fully functional on it, with 4g and hdmi and everything. i'd say it's pretty smoothly fit.
btw you are on pre-7.0. cm7 is now on stable version 7.0.3, with nightlys for 7.1 that only have a small mms bug (can't recieve them).

We need stable Roms!

First off i would like to thank all devs for their hard work!
When are we going to have roms that don't soft reset on their own? everyone is making roms based on calks and they all soft reset when installing software needed and like to use.
for instance i cant install my backup pro on calks roms, but the free my backup works. when installing launcher 7 on his roms, it soft resets during calls.
why can't we have someone use the stock rom, root it, remove ciq, add tethering and so forth so we don't have issues.
i know the default response is "don't download them if you don't like them". We are here to have fun and test stuff but these roms soft reset after stating their roms are a finished product.
We?
I've been through just about every ROM in the development section and have never had a problem.

Wow.
You don't get to use "thank you" as an excuse to start bashing the work here. It doesn't matter if the wonderful devs "state their ROM is a finished product" or not. They don't owe you, me, XDA or anyone else a goddamn thing. Frankly, if they want to intentionally put in boot loops for giggles, that's their right and you don't get to say a thing about it. They're doing it for free; entirely for free so that folks like you and I might be able to enjoy an improved user experience on our $600 phones.
Why can't "we" have "stable ROMs?" Because you haven't spent a couple hundred hours programming one for us so we can bash every single problem it has.
Either get working on that or, please, kindly shut the **** up.
Thank you!
Let me know when you create one, OR when you start paying the DEV to work for you and you.
Till then, kindly stfu .

My Backup Pro works perfect for me on all versions of calk's rom. Sounds like your phone just sucks. I have had 0 reboots unless using the OLD lockscreen mod (before the most recent update), or because of the LOS repair daemon.
Snowflakes
Yeah, no stability issues here and I've tried several ROM's. That said it seems like our phones are like snowflakes. No two seem to be exactly the same. For example, I have never experienced LoS (knock on wood) but obviously this is a significant problem for lots of folks. And some phones can be under and overclocked more than others. Weird.

Wtf are you talking about? Lol
I can understand where the OP is coming from. When I was on the Evo 3D and every other phone on my signature, when the dev said there rom was complete it was finished and stable.
On this phone, it was a different story. I was also one of the phone Epic users who phone would reboot on EVERY SINGLE rom and that was with no custom launcher and no overclock. It would just hot reboot randomly by it self on every rom.
The OP is correct to a certain extent that EVERY rom on here is built off Culks work so what every problem Culks rom had the other roms had the same problem. So of course my phone was hot rebooting on every rom.
This seemed to have been fixed with the EK02 stock rom became available because now that im on Calks 2.0 rom I havnt had a hot reboot ever since.
To the OP go ahead and install the EK Rom / Radio / Kernal and your hot reboots should go away. If your having reboots from using custom launcher then I dont have a solution for that.
As for MyBackUp Pro it always worked on every rom so I dont know what to say there.
Good luck!
First off, why point fingers at roms when it could, in fact, be the app that is causing the issue? I've been running Caulkin's Rom since his first issue and have yet to have a single reboot.
Any backup program can cause issues depending upon what you're restoring. If you're trying to restore any system settings you're setting yourself up for problems. Even restoring some apps with data can cause issues as file structures may change as roms are updated.
So, do yourself a favor before you start pointing fingers at devs and roms. Don't take the lazy way out just once. Do a full wipe, install all your apps fresh from the market and see what happens. I highly doubt you'll see any reboots at all.
.....
Starburst and Venum have been perfect for me. Sometimes I swear its the device, mine won't overclock at all and playing with voltages causes more problems than it solves on my device. Stock kernel seems to solve all my problems though.

Seriously, I have to back the other responses here. The day you have a ROM that works perfectly for YOU is the day you compile it yourself. Until then, be happy that these guys spend any of their valuable free time contributing something that makes all of our lives more enjoyable. If you can't do that, then kindly find the door.
I havent had a problem with any rom. No reboots at all. Overclocked, underclocked or stock, havent had a problem. Perhaps the problem isnt the phone, but whats behind it.....

[Q] I need in depth real help figuring this out

So to start I have Fibromyalgia and as a result I have trouble understanding and doing some things. I have the epic 4g touch and recently it was running horribly, so I thought about restoring it and trading it in at best buy mobile, well even doing that I don't have enough money for a new phone so f*ck them.
So now my phone is restored, stock, unrooted and I need someone to help me figure out what rom to use because I need to theme it because the stock UI makes me want to vomit. I can't quite explain what I need or want all I know is I've previously tried just about everything and everything had some sort of a problem but it's been months so I don't know if anything new will do what I want or not. I just can't figure it out and need someone with patience and time to help me go step by step figuring out what to do.
I appreciate your help immensely.
The guy who will walk you thru it step by step is qbking77 and his YouTube videos. He also covers a lot of different roms in his videos. I suggest starting there and then asking questions once you decide on a rom.

What are you looking for in general? GB, ICS or JB? TW themed or AOSP/CM based? Toss out some ideas of what you're looking for theme and function wise and ill help you find something that fits you, even tho it might not happen on the first try cuz you may find something in the rom that bugs you or doesn't work that doesn't affect me.

I really wish I could manage MIUI to work because that's the only ICS I don't mind because you can do so much but it just refuses to work on my phone. I also can't OTA update my phone for ANYthing, even with it fully stock and unrooted it gets not even half way then stops and shows a triangle with ! I'm actually thinking of just selling this damn thing and going for the III because a friend has one and it's much prettier so I won't feel the need to go crazy changing things. I just don't have it in me to deal with such a vast phone. Give me too much rope and I'll just hang myself with it. I tried Calkulin ROM last time and it worked for a bit until everything was just ****, freezing rebooting not getting calls.... I just want a phone to do what I want it to!!! I tried starburst and it did nothing, haven't tried miui in awhile.... never had any luck with Cyanogenmod whatsoever. I don't understand how phones all made the same way can be so different and temperamental like people? wtf is the point of buying a specific phone if your friends does this awesome thing but you have the exact same phone and you can't!!!!

JB is jelly bean android 4.1.x the newest build. ICS has come a long way on this phone since the ff18 ota. Cm9 is really stable now that its on beta1. For TW themed I'd suggest blu kuban as it seems to be a forum favorite. I personally prefer aisle/cm based roms. I run aokp or paranoid android for the customization, theme manager makes changing the look as simple as installing an app, selecting it in themes and rebooting. from the symptoms you're describing with your issues and loading new roms seem to be from "dirty" flashing, not fully wiping in recovery before flashing the rom.

When flashing a new rom, make sure you wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache(under advanced menu in cwm) otherwise the issues you described pop up, Force closes, random reboots, lagging, freezing etc. Also make sure to use a "safe" recovery, there are several choices but I prefer el26+cwm5 or twrp.

ya I always do proper wiping and all that, I got my phone restored to where it was so of course back to all the problems I was having. I'm hoping I can just sell the phone and have someone else deal with it.
