[Q] Best Recovery - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just always used ClockworkMod (and never had any problems), but always see people post that AmonRA is superior, but I haven't seen why? Is there really a big advantage of one over the other? Thanks!

The only time you would ever see an issue is when you have a problem. AmonRA eliminates ever having a recovery issue. Amon also has a couple more features that come in handy.

Neither is perfect, but Amon Ra tends to have less problems. That's not saying that no one has ever seen an issue with Amon Ra, but it's less likely. Amon Ra supports both edify and amend scripts where CWM only supports edify. I prefer the way Amon Ra is organized - the menus make more sense to me. I haven't used ClockworkMod since I first rooted my phone almost a year ago, so I can't tell you the difference in options. Back then, Amon Ra had more options, but I haven't seen the updates to ClockworkMod. Clockwork has been known to have some problems wiping properly as well.
If you're comfortable with CWM and have not had any problems, I see no reason to switch. I believe that Amon Ra is better, but that doesn't mean that I believe that everyone should use it. If you do have a problem, you'll know what to switch to. Or you can go ahead and switch now and see if you like it better.

I was never able to successfully update my radio, wimax, etc when I used cw. However, that was back in the 3.x days and I haven't messed with the latest version. Like the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Well the version of cwm was broke at that time, therefore I switched to Amon-ra. I haven't had any complaints since. If you do switch, you'll need to make a new backup since the recoveries aren't compatible with each other. Good luck.

amon ra doesn't have advance restore data so thats a drawback..

FWIW, I've been using amonRa 1.80 since July '10, and I have never had a recovery problem or bad flash or bad wipe. And it flashes anything I throw at it.

I've always used clockwork no matter wat phone I was using.. not sure about a.r. but i say if it aint broke don't fix it...

I use amonra solely bc it has the wimax backup feature. Not sure if cwm has that but I got burned before not using amonra when I decided to fiddle with radio updates and lost 4g. Sorry if I went off topic but I vowed to myself to always use amonra and not kick myself in the ass again

I used to use clockworkmod until i read the "how to root for dummy's" thread and switched to amon ra. I have no idea why, i just did.
I did notice, however, that when I was using clockworkmod I would have to reflash a certain rom 2-3 times to stop it from berserking. Maybe it didn't wipe my data correctly? Who knows. But after switching to amon ra, I didn't have to relfash a rom. That scenario could have been caused by a completely different reason but I'm sticking with it.

What is with ppl saying clockwork recovery doesn't work right?

I have been reading people saying that clockwork recovery doesn't wipe cache right and some other stuff. I am also starting to see ROM developers even mention this in their posted ROM's.
I have always used clockwork recovery with no problems. Has anyone even bothered to talk to koush about this problem the recovery has or just dissin his mod?
He seems to update it often and I find it hard to believe he hasn't or wouldn't address this.
Anyone?
I am right there with ya? I have used it and not had issues... Maybe its because I don't get crazy on flipping roms that often?
Version 2.5 fixed all past issues with clockwork mod.
Well I was using clockwork mod....latest version of course....and it didn't seem to wipe davlink cache...so last night I did the research and figured out a quick way to flash between RA and clockworkmod recoveries. It's actually really easy to flip between the two through adb. I do flip between roms from time to time and its nice to use the recovery the developer reccomends.

Help....my clockwork will not let me install the latest recovery ??? What can I do

What do you mean latest recovery? Clockwork is a recovery.

I switched to RA after Clockwork recovery tried to strangle me in my sleep. I reported the bug so hopefully it will be fixed in the next version.
I've hopped between Amon and Clockwork, and I like them both. Amon is a cleaner interface (in my opinion) but Clockwork allows you to flash unsigned .zip's, and makes sure that you want to do an action before you do it (i.e. no, no, no, yes, no interface, lololol).
Both are amazing pieces of software.

I have been using amon this whole time....I need to flash the netarchy c kernel...when I go to flash latest recovery in clockwork it gives me a error...so I uses the alternative recovery at the bottom of the menus. I still can't flash the kernel

I use Clockwork because that's what Rom Manager uses. Haven't had a single problem with it as of yet. Very nice to be able to update CM6 nightlies without touching a computer.
Seems like Amon has more features / cleaner interface though.

ROM Manager also allows easy switching as AmonRA's recovery is there as the "Alternate Recovery" on the bottom of the app. It will gladly flash back and forth (I use RA when I am going to update something through any of the CMUpdater-based update apps (DC and Fresh both use these)).
It's important to remember too, that each of the recovery images handle nandroids differently so if you nandroid in one, you have to use that same one to restore.

not really. if you copy the nandroid file from one folder to the other folder, either one will load it.
From my experience, CWM doesn't flash ROMs as well as AR (Failed flashing the CM6 nightly twice, AR got it the first time) and also doesn't have a Wipe Dalvik option, or an as-easy way to mount the SD card.

I never had a failure of flashing a rom, on any recovery, period. That is strange, sounds more like a problem with the rom.
CWM definitely has wipe dalvik option, it's under advanced. I just used it
Again clockwork has never failed me ever! It seems to clear cache fine to me as I have never had a boot loop I couldn't get out of.
So far there apears to be ZERO evidence of an issue with clockwork recovery so I guess I need to start asking developers why they are dissing clockwork recovery or just PM Koush directly.
If there is an issue I just want it to be addressed because I love the recovery and ROM Manager.

Clockwork or Armon?

I'm curious, who uses which and why?
*Amon. Oops
I personally use cw...but many people on this forum swear by amon bc they say it is more reliable... some roms require you to use amon to flash. ...I personally have never had issues flashing with cw...
Bottom line is that we have two good choices if you are a flashaholic

Amon-ra is my preference 0 errors. Clockwork is nice also, has its own app but people have reported a couple of flashing errors. Both are awesome all I can say is try out both see which one you like better.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I was kind of tempted with the features and GUI of Clockwork, but after reading a bit on here, it seems like Amon Ra is the reliable way to go. I'm new to Evo rooting and roms, but when I had my Nexus One, AR was absolutely the way to go. Rock freakin' solid.
Currently if you have a evo with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 the only recovery u can use after rooting is amon ra...just a fyi
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Amon by far.
Amon_RA, since CWM doesn't work properly on newer hboots, and because CWM does not properly wipe partitions when you tell it to. Simple as that.

Im currently using CW...This is why I definitely want to use Ra... however when I flash it using rom manager, and then try any functions in Ra recovery is says "no zip files installed ".. any possible solutions??
I use Amon_ra because it backs up the wimax rsa keys. That's the only advantage I saw

The solution is to place your flashable .zip files to the base sdcard directory and not within a subfolder.

Like the person above said, Amon_RA 1.8.0 can only use ZIP files which are on the root of your SD card, not in a sub-folder. Version 2.0 (which Amon_RA has suggested will be coming soon-ish) will have folder navigation.
Amon Ra currently but I have used both. The reasons are clear it backs the RSA keys, and does clear when wiping.
Btw try #grep RSA /sdcard/nandroid/HT065HL*/(name of nandroid file)/wimax.img
You'll see where your RSA keys are stored in your nandroid.
I go back and forth.... I use amon ra for nandroid backups and serious flashes like radio pri nv all that jazz. I like clockwork for ease sometimes. I don't use app2sd. I use titanium to wipe davlik and repeat in either cw or amon ra just to be sure... They both have their good points. and bad

[Q] AMON RA or Clockwork which is better and why?

So im runnin Clockwork custom recovery on my EVO and I hav read on several threads that using Amon RA is better. I would like to kno the reasons why and if I decide to change how would I go bout it? Please include any links in getting the Amon RA recovery and or procedures please...thanks!
Open Rom Manager and scroll down to select "Flash Alternate Recovery" clcik RA and thats it. Give it a whirl, you dont like it flash back to clockwork via Rom Manager (at top).
personally I use clockwork, only because it works with rom manager.....
I use amon ra, I had it on my moto cliq, then I had to use clockwork on my vibrant, now amon ra on my evo. I like it better. Its probably just personal preference but I have read that clockwork doesnt always do a good nandroid backup/restore, I never tried it though so im not certain. Like to guy above said, its real easy to switch back and forth though
Amon is easier to read, and its prettier.

Haven't used clock in a while but from what I remember it was more steps to get to certain things and the entire UI was a bit confusing to a new person. Now this is speaking from my hero days, lol so things may have changed!

It's preference, the general consensus that's misunderstood is that ra is better. This for me is only because my dev has nothing to do with clockwork therefore its rendered useless for me.besides updating ra recovery...
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Personally, i have and do use both, and neither is better, as they do the same thing. The 1 advantage to amon_ra is that you can select the elements of your backup, so they can be smaller, where as clockwork backs up everything by default.

You can still download rom from it [if on premium version], flash alternate recovery, and boot into recovery if on amon_ra; the only thing you can't do it automatically backup the rom from there.

Bricked Phone?

OK.
I need some serious help!
I have an EVO that I rooted with UNREVOKED about a month ago
This afternoon, I tried to flash to the new Synergy Rom with the cool Sense UI, BUT!! Dumb me, who was up working all night long was not reading correctly and flashed the INCREDIBLE ROM.
Yeah Yeah I know, dumb thing
I obviously got an error and then tried to restore my Nandroid backups that I had previously made.
These caused errors too..which they never had before.
I pulled the battery and then couldn't even get into clockwork mod.
I was thankfully able to flash Clockwork MOD to at least be able to get into a recovery screen.
I did so, and flashed my Myn 2.2 ROM which thankfully installed.
Tonight, I went back to try to flash the ROM that I had originally wanted to flash and the flash was complete.
HOWEVER, when I rebooted, it just kept going to the white HTC screen, hanging and then rebooting to the white HTC screen over and over.
I tried to start all over but doing a data wipe/factory restore and to wipe the Dalvik Cache..
When I did this, I got an error:
E:Can't mount/dev/block/mmcb1k0p2
File exists.
I was able to get back to my Myn 2.2 but things like Google navigator don't work,
I hope I have explained this well enough for you guys to understand.
If there is anyone out there that can help me, I would appreciate it!!!
Thanks
Mike
You did not brick your device.
Try this out and tell me it works.
Download EVO version of your preferred Rom. Place on SD card.
Search for amon ra supersonic.
Go to the xda link once you search for it.
Download the PC36IMG.zip version of amon ra.
Place on sdcard, but not in any folders.
Make sure the file name is "PC36IMG.zip", it is case sensitive.
Turn off phone.
Reboot into hboot, by holding the volume DOWN key and power button.
Let the hboot find the PC36IMG image.
When it asks whether you want to update/flash...say yes.
It will unload the recovery image into your phone.
It will ask you if you want to reboot, say no.
Then, go to where it says recovery and click to boot into recovery.
Now you should be using amon ra v2.3.3 supersonic.
Go to wipe and wipe everything, factory reset, data, ext, android secure, everything!
If you feel frisky, wipe again!
Now, proceed to flash from zip.
Choose the Rom you downloaded in step one.
That should do the trick. Also...clockwork mod nandroid backups will not work with amon ra backups, and vice versa. Keep this in mind.

Well, when I first purchased my Evo I used clockwork mod for about a day. It caused me issues, personally, which could also be attributed to my lack of knowledge at the time. So I tried amon ra and have always been happy. My issue with cwm was that it did wipe correctly.

I have read that it is possible that you can lose your 4G keys with AMON RA. That makes me nervous...is there anyway to avoid this?
No one can guarantee that you won't lose your WiMax keys with either recovery. I have never used Clockwork on my EVO, but my keys are intact with AMON RA, and it is easy to back them up with AMON RA.
Thank you so much!!!
I have company in town and not a lot of time to play...so it is SAFE to wipe everything?
Is there anything that I shouldn't be wiping?
Android security? What is that? And is it Safe? I am just a bit nervous...but THANK YOU for your help!
Don't wipe your SD card. Yes, wipe android secure.
Android secure is a directory used by Google apps2sd, capable on froyo and above. It is where Google stores your apps once you move them to SD card. You can wipe it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
unfortunately, this did not work. I did everything that you said. I install the amon ra, and deleted everything and wiped everything that you said. I installed the new ram that I thought was a successful install. it booted to the white htc screen, and then turned itself off and right back on it went right back to that same white htc screen. It kept doing this.....other then this being a bad rom can you think of anything else I could be causing this? HELP!

I agree to use amon ra. Try formatting the system partition. I know that the new sense roms are large.

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
What version of RA do u have? I had a version that have options for clearing a bunch of partitions. I'm pretty sure its there under advanced or something... Clear system partition? Out won't hurt anything, but you have to flash a rom after that or there will be nothing to boot to

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
sorry I am not rooted right now. I received a replacement phone because of a broken micro USB and it came with 2.3.3. Do you see an option for wipe system partition? or format system partition?
I also think that the mikg rom runs a script during flash that wipes the system. Kind of aamikiam's way of taking the end user mistakes out of the equation I guess...

Amon Ra?

So my question is... I have Amon Ra Recovery 2.3 and I've heard that there have been updates but I have been unsuccessful in finding them. Am I losing my mind or is there an update somewhere that's been hidden from me... I hope someone has the answer for me.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA
No, the actual Amon Ra has not been updated since 2.3
There is Amon Ra style recovery that is someone else taking over the project and adding their own stuff.
Personally I suck with 2.3 it just works and there isn't much else I need from recovery.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Stick with 2.3. Stability is worth it compared to the risks of touchscreen etc. issues
Yes, I would agree. Ive used this version with no problems
