Today I was checking and it showed me update was available
So i downloaded it over air , then it went through some steps and then rebooted and then gave me an error saying software won't update.
I donot have unlocked bootloader only a rooted phone.
I am current on 2.3.3 and have LT15i with rogers
Help ?
Did you remove any bloatware? That could caus problems with updates...
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
The only real explanation to this would be that you removed some of the bloatware that you couldn't uninstall without rooting (e.g. through Titanium Backup).
mine can connect perfectly... Maybe you delete some bloatware that makes your arc too hard to connect to PC?

First of all i'm sorry to post more questions about rooting but it seems like no one cares about some problems... i searched so many times on xda and even google advanced search
I have the r800 xperia play...I've been using it for couple of months so i have a lot of apps n stuff. I am running the newest 4.0.A update and i love it but i read i cant flash to 2.3.2,root it with gingerbread then update to 4.0.A cuz its not OTA
so i thought i could do it the unlocking bootloader way but i have a lot of questions so lets start...
-Is there a way to be rooted in 4.0.A,and if there is...do i need a rom or what?
-If I root my phone will i loose all my app data(this is the most important part,i dont want to loose all my perfect games in cut the rope and games like modern combat which have incredibly hard levels)
-When my phone is rooted...will i be able to update it to 2.3.4 and the Ice Cream Sandwich next year,or i would have to load custom roms
-I also noticed that when i uninstall a free app from my phone it disappears from the My Apps tab in The Market so what am i supposed to do if the root wipes all my apps? Write all 60+ of them on a peace of paper?
Contacts and stuff dont worry me
First off i dont have an unlocked bootloader but i will answer what i can.
1. Someone with an unlocked bootloader will have answer this one but im sure you can.
2. If you unlock your bootloader your phone will be wiped. The only way you would have kept root and all your apps is if your are on 2.3.3 (with a locked bootloader) and are waiting for the xloud update over ota (like i am) But since you have already updated to 4.0.A if you reflashed to 2.3.2 > rooted > ota to 2.3.3 (and wait like me) you will still loose all your apps (since you had to reflash). Best you can hope for is backing up your apps data with titanium backup pro or my backup pro. Then once you are rooted on an unlocked bootloader (or if you have reflashed 2.3.2 > rooted > ota to 2.3.3 with root) you can reinstall the app data.
3. If you unlock the bootloader you can still get updates but you cannot get them from OTA, PC Companion or SEUS (it will brick your phone) you will have to go the development section and a user who has got 2.3.4 (when its out) will post an update package you can use.
4. I have used App List Backup from the market. It saves all your market apps in a list so you can just redownload them and you still get updates e.t.c. Only works with market apps no 3rd party ones. Or even MyAppsList just to create a txt of app names.

Thats what I feared...but doesnt titanium backup require root? Maybe i misread it somewhere and its stuck in my head
LOL yeah sorry my bad. Indeed it does. I think mybackup pro works without root but im not sure if it is 100% reliable. Either way you are gonna have to either loose all your data or gamble saving your app data with my backup pro since rooting on anything after 2.3.2 (with a locked bootloader) does not work.
MyBackup requires root to backup app data I mean hasn't anyone figured out how to save their data...seems to me nobody cares about it
Anyways, provided that somehow i magically manage to save it i would still have to wait for OTA. Any ideas where i can check daily when the update will be available?
lol sigh... something is wrong with me today. I stoped reading as soon i a saw
MyBackup and MyBackup Pro will work on all Android mobile devices, regardless if they have root access or not.

Sorry bout that bud. Probably got your hopes up for nothing I think the arc got their ota update a few weeks after it appeared on SEUS/Pc Companion but who knows its totally up to SE. I dont even think all the countries have got the ota yet for the arc.
You can root without unlocking the bootloader as far as I remember. I believe I used SuperOneClick for it.
What is this guy at post #7 talking about? http://forums.androidcentral.com/general-help-how/63387-backup-application-data.html
Nope

I believe that basic Android - unthemed, untouched - does regular backups to Google. Basically, it will backup your app data and your list of apps. When you wipe a phone and log back in, it'll restore the apps and data automatically.
I noticed this myself when I was on my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate. The first time I installed Cyanogenmod 7 on it, it restored a ton of apps on my phone. The touchwiz framework for the Captivate doesn't allow it by default, I believe.
I have not seen this work on the Xperia Play.
Well...if it works on other phones it can work on any other phone running it...right?
I guess someone would have to extract the feature and somehow make an apk
I don't think it's quite that simple. It's most likely completely removed from the framework, so there's no readding an APK.

What your talking about was a feature of froyo, google removed it with gingerbread.

My hopes are being buried deeper and deeper... Ok how about this, that data must exist somewhere on the phones memory right? So if the apps themselves can access and change it,why can't another app or say a computer? Tell me why that won't work...

because the app has the permission to do it, an unrooted user, does not have access to /data/data
Ok this is the last thing i had in mind...SE had some sort of backup app for the arc and it was ported to other xperia phones but whenever i would try to download it from their official page it would show me random html all over the page and now i lost the link..
But when i think about it... SE couldn't do it without root so...it probably just saves something else. Anyway can i root it with unlocked bootloader without loosing data?

Your phone gets wiped when you unlock your bootloader but you can downgrade to a rootable version of android using flashtool without loosing data you can then make a backup, unlock bootloader, flash latest firmware, restore backup
Oh yea...That recovery thing?

Well my original plan was to downgrade do 2.3.2,Gingerbreak and wait for 4.0.A to hit OTA but Mozza2k11 said it would wipe my data
*Sigh* My Xperia PLAY is model R800a, Rogers Canada version that I imported to work on AT&T.
Regardless of whether I try to update through PC Companion or OTA, it tells me I've already got the latest.
...please tell me there's a solution that's not gonna require me to re-flash and end up losing all my game saves/re-installing everything. I'm unrooted so titanium won't help me.
...I just want in on all this 720p recording fun everyone's having... that's really the only reason.
Did you delete any system apps?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I'm on a stock rom... I couldn't delete any system stuff if I tried.
I did root it back when it had 2.2 and clean out all the bloatware... but after upgrading to stock 2.3.3, they kindly sent me back to square one, removed my root and put it all back.
I kinda didn't mind though... 2.3.3 battery life and performance has been so good that I didn't bother doing any tinkering outside of a ADB setInstallLocation 2 trick so I could install more stuff.
Think that maybe my previous root had something to do with it, even though it's gone and fully replaced with an official stock ROM?
I don't doubt there is some info here but i just cannot find it.
I downgraded to 2.3.2 and ran Gingerbreak to get rid of some bloat. All is fine but whenever i do an OTA update it goes through the whole process of finding and downloading the update, resets phone etc. All looks well but when it reboots after the four blue dots on the boot screen thing, it says software update failed. Has happened three times now.
Is there something i need to switch off etc? I dont really mind losing root with a PC update as long as dont get fifa, sims back etc.
Any ideas?
I think that the OTA update will fail if you have removed some bloatware... have you tried to restore everything you've removed before doing the update?
If I remember correct, after you run Gingerbreak, the first thing you should do is OTA update, THEN can you start remove bloatware. That's how I did anyway, and it worked.
1. After initiating Gingerbreak, DO NOT REMOVE BLOATWARE YET.
2. OTA first before removing unnecessary apps as the update will detect any tampering within the system/app directory and fail the update process.
3. When you update via PC Companion or Update Service, you lose root and at the same time you get all the bloatware back.
4. Update using OTA ONLY if you want to keep root after using Gingerbreak.
5. Next time, browse through threads, it will save you the trouble and the forums the clutter.
Thanks for the reply but it was not obvious about 'not removing bloatware'. I found threads with plenty of descriptions of the process; hell, I even used one to do it. But in none of them could I see a warning of removing the bloatware; in a few this was the tutorial for getting rid of the bloat.
As 2.3.4 is not available OTA does this mean I am basically stuffed? I only want to Root to get rid of Fifa, Sims etc. If I do the OTA to 2.3.3 (latest offered in the UK via OTA) then remove the Bloat, I am going to be unable to OTA to 2.3.4.
Is there any way of getting rid if these rubbish Sony apps without unlocking and still be able to update OTA when 2.3.4 comes out?
You could always redo the whole process of applying .184_UK => Gingerbreak => OTA to 2.3.4 then remove bloatware again.
...or use Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware, saving a backup of everything you remove and restoring it once you'd like to OTA update the next time. I haven't tried this but I suppose that would work too.
here's my opinion on your situation buddy.. for now, use gingerbreak to root then OTA to 2.3.3 xLoud. don't remove bloatware yet while we wait for 2.3.4. i didn't remove yet any bloatware from my phone because i'm waiting too since i rooted mine through gingerbreak.. why be bothered with bloatware? there has been a test somewhere showing no/little difference between stock and bloatware-removed Xperia PLAYs in terms of performance.. besides, android manages its ram very well unlike windows. android actually performs better if its RAM is nearly full. it's called pooling.
but if you're too bothered with the bloatware, you can always use titanium backup to freeze unwanted apps so you can unfreeze them when ota becomes available, saving you the trouble of repeating the whole process again.
as i said i havent removed bloatware yet because im waiting for 2.3.4 via ota, but believe me i've seen/experienced no significant decrease in overall performance. be patient buddy, it will serve you well.
PS: i don't trust that much the backup capabilities of TB.. i recommend you have a copy of all your apps under system/app and take note of what apps you remove so you can just manually bring them back via Root Explorer or so then set the permissions to rw-r--r--. i feel more confident when i do things manually.
Cheers guys. Now on 2.3.3 with root..I guess I will have to wait for the 2.3.4 OTA and mess with backups before removing the bloatware.
Your assistance, as always, has been invaluable. Thanks so much...
I've currently got my bloatware frozen, but I've also integrated updates into the system rom for updates to Maps, YouTube, etc.. will I likely have issues for OTA updating to 2.3.4? Not sure if it checks system app versions..
Hi guys im a complete noob to all of this mobile rooting so ive got alot of questions and as all the other threads i read make no sense to me i thought i would just create a new 1 so here goes.
I got a new xperia play r800i on tmobile it currently has android 2.3.2 and build version 3.0.A.2.184, i wanted to update to the new version to get the new features like xloud, themes etc but after 4 days of arguing between tmobile and sonyericsson tmobile have now said the update is not available so i have decided to just look at debranding or rooting the handset ( not sure what ones what or if there the same )
i have looked at so many different websites so many posts and a failed attempt at using the davinciteam option thanks to paypal not letting me pay, ive come to the conclusion i have no idea what todo or who to ask. can somebody give me a simple way of getting this fone debranded so i can update to the 4.0.A.2.368 to get the new features and remove the stuff tmobile put on there. i see something about gingerbreak but when i start reading about it i just get confused and frustrated.can somebody seriously help me here.
Go to wotanserver.com. Register for a new account (its free). Download the drivers and client software. Install drivers and open wontanserver software. Sign in and follow directions. Choose r800i 2.3.2 (3.0.a.??184 or something). Now download gingerbreak. 1.2( search forum or google) to your computer and unzip. Now connect phone to computer and drag gingerbreak to xperia play storage. On phone go to market and download and install "explorer". Open explorer and find sdcard/gingerbreak.apk and click on it. Now install and open. In gingerbreak press root and wait 5-10 mins until it reboots. Now go to settings/phone/system update. Only update Over-The-Air or else you'll lose root with pc companion/se updater. Enjoy your rooted r800i 2.3.3
P.S. Dont remove system apps unless you aren't going to update again 2.3.4. Use titanium to backup/ freeze apps you dont want to see in phone. Beware of what apps to do this to.

With reflashing there is the obvious risks involved what would you say the success rate is and simplicity todo this the way you have explained to me and would this effect future official updates. Sorry to be a pain but you can understand my precautions I hope. Thanks again.

100% success rate. To do official updates. Unfreeze or restore system apps with titanium backup and update ota only. You'll keep root and have the latest firmware

like if sony release updates, im not talkinga bout apps i mean official updates for xperia play x800? its rooted but i wanna make sure if i can or not dont' wanna cause a brick
Rooting won't affect updating whatsoever, unless you delete system apps. You may lose root after updating, however.
As long as your bootloader is locked, you're fine.

If system apps are deleted/frozen, what will the update do? Or will I not get the update?
I want to no the same thing iv just rooted and deleted the crappy FIFA 10 game that came with my phone will that affect updating when ics comes?? When I deleted it it said remove system app :-(

No u should be fine Is just a game
I deleted the crap apps like FIFA 10 or Office Suite or whatever, too.
And I froze Google Maps and other apps. Then I updated with PC Companion (I also had root on my play), and then the root disappeared and all the deleted apps were on my phone again. I don't have a brick now, it works fine, but I can't root it now

.62 firmware patches the Update, the only way to root now I believe is to unlock your bootloader, and updating via PC Companion is like flashing new firmware with Flash Tool, I've stuck to .42, I don't want to unlock my bootloader atm, I have once to test out an ICS rom, but in general I'm waiting for the official update to come out, You can flash .42 using Flashtool, I have absolutely no benefit updating to .62.
