I have created a 9 part guide to help everyone (new members mostly) get the best out of our site, and start learning!
This is in partial follow up to my previous post on being a new member and trying to navigate the site.
It was a couple weeks before I understood all the different areas of information on this site!
Remember that new or 'Junior Members' (under 8 -10 posts) cant post in Development forums, create a signature, use "Thanks Button" or edit their posts!
Only Mods can Delete and rarely do! be careful what you say! Useless threads are always closed and cant be edited!
Anything you say can be PERMANENT!
When you become a full member make sure to use the thanks button at the bottom of every helpful post! Its better than replying "Thanks!" More on thanks button at end of the Guide!

One quick message then on with the tour...
What is XDA??
originally posted by kyphur:
I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself?" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position.

9. Android Rom Terms - Analogy by: TRusselo
I came up with a great analogy for ROM terms! (for noob think.)
- "A ROM" is like "a car" nothing in specific but a body, wheels, engine, and paint. a general standard vehicle.
- "Each ROM" or each developer is like an auto maker. Each has their own style, options, focus and customer base. Some are luxury, others economy and some are fully loaded! Some are fully packed and heavy and others are base models and very light. You get to get to choose what you like or need, and for once "price is no object" (donating is appreciated) But you almost always get a whole car!
- "Framework" - is like the frame / model or type of car. You cant put SUV parts in a compact car. It just won't work unless you are able to rebuild from scratch (and if you can do that, you would laugh at this analogy!)
Parts / Kernels / Mods must be compatible with that framework, and that framework must be compatible with your phone.
- "Rooting" or getting a "rooted ROM" is like getting the keys and permission to change ANYTHING in your car! But you dont have a warranty anymore!
- The Kernel is like the engine and power systems, it is the "software" engine, it does work and ties all the components together. And engines can be upgraded and tuned up for performance or down for economy!
- The theme is like the paint job. pure looks and enjoyment!
- Other dialers, meta-morphs, mods ect are all after market fun changes, once again only looks not usually any more function.
- The launcher (no rooting or romming needed) is alot like your interior, its the seat you sit in and the controls you touch 75% of the time, until you dig through your glove box or fuse box (back to rom)

Oh and how not to quote the whole first post inc images when replying or asking that silly question.

I agree with this, all I've been seeing lately are pointless threads made by newbs with a 1-10 post record that don't take the time to search and just want the people to give them the answers to all thier issues. I myself have found answers to some of them within a minute with our search feature, that if they would've used the search , they wouldn't needed to post dumb questions that they could've answer themselfs only if they took the time to seach and do a little reading.

This thread ftw.
In all seriousness, there is a lot to be learned from the OP link. Flashing roms is easy and people who don't need to be doing it are. I'm no chef and, God forbid, I f-up my phone I know it's my fault.
Everyone should use caution. These roms are not put out to screw up your device but stupidity and an inability to follow directions to a T will. You do take your device into your own hands, literally and figuratively, when you do these kinds of modifications.
The rewards of a tweak gone right can only be equalled by the risks of the same tweak when done by inexperienced users.
HOLY SH**! I didn't mean to write a dissertation there.

"It's all out War"
The first thing I found when I came on tonight was a new thread with a new member on his/her first post asking that just flashed 6.1 and can't add the sounds for text messages. Honestly, somehow they should block new members from creating new threads until they have at least a 50+ post score, that would make them use the SEARCH feature and get involved in ongoing threads instead of creating a thread with a question that it has been answered or its a working issue that other people are discussing on a different thread. I don't want to be a prick to new guys, cause I was there before, but I always took the time to use the most apparently elusive feature that is called SEARCH

yeah I agree (postcount++)
edit: crap I'm only at 14 posts :-\
I don't agree with post count policy, 'cause I've seen some with almost no posts start a thread with some of the greatest/tools software for xda. We probably would have never gotten them if we had limited the authors til 50 posts. Someone had mentioned a rating, where a post/thread could be deleted by a certain number of members voting a rating against it. Sadly, in the end, there is probably nothing we can do to stop the stupid posts and still keep the possibility of a great "noob" post that we need.

Update: 11/23 @ 3:54PM EST
SteadyHawkin has gotten an ICS kernel put together with a fully working recovery!! Way to go, man!! At this point, we are testing with our current build to work on fixing things! I have been trying to get a source build of our own together, but there is a problem when trying to sync ICS source right now. But we will continue on
Reserved!!
Mine too!!
No posting in here if it's not related to development!! I don't know how much clearer I can make this. There is a link in the OP to a thread about ICS in General, post in there. If you post in here asking for ETAs, volunteering to test, of anything not related to development, I hope you get a nice long vacation from XDA. Jerdog will address this more shortly.

As -viperboy- stated, this thread is for discussion relating to Development. Anything that is not directly related to issues experienced with this development effort, and NOT already addressed in the thread itself, counts as off-topic and will be actioned accordingly and might just earn it's poster a nice little vacation from XDA to think about his/her actions - or maybe to read:
XDA Mantra
XDA Forum Rules
And if you have any questions on what might constitute "off-topic" and unwelcome thread-garbage, let me just quote some of what venerable Senior Moderator and top developer pulser_g2 had to say:
pulser_g2 said:
Welcome to XDA-Developers. This is a development site.
People behave like this is 4chan. If you want 4chan, bugger off there, and leave people who wish to develop. You'll find that XDA is actually pretty tolerant. But there are rules, and there is a line.
Noobish posts from people simply after "the product" do not belong. This is NOT a noob site. If you are here for the ROM, and just want to use it, then you count as a noob. That means you should keep out of development threads, and stick to general.
People ****ting on dev threads is what causes the problems. If someone causes problems, then that pisses off the developers, who ask mods to clean their threads.
If you want to behave like a 4chan user, go to 4chan and do it.
You do NOT have an absolute right to freedom of speech on private websites, but you will find this site is very, very tolerant, compared to many others. But this is a development site. That is the key word. If you're not here to develop, you have to stay in the correct place. That means no troll posts, and no "stupid comments" in serious threads.
And finally @ whoever said they don't like their posts being deleted. That makes sense. But if you avoid 4chan behaviour on XDA, and make meaningful posts, you will find it doesn't happen... I happen to know that in 2 years on XDA, I have had zero posts deleted. So... I'd suggest the contents of the posts is the issue.
If you make meaningless posts like "thanks" or "looking forward to it", in what way has that contributed to development? If you are posting something USEFUL, then you'll find posts don't go away if a thread is cleaned up. So before you think about "OMG OMG some1 haz deleated mah post OH NOEZZZ!!!!!", consider the fact that without people here to keep the place clean, XDA wouldn't exist, as it would be overrun with idiots

I think that pretty much clears that up. =)
Thanks, jerdog. That perfectly sums it up.
Now, as a small update for everyone - SteadyHawkin, me, and hopefully many of the other devs will have a date in IRC tonight working on this I would appreciate if we could keep the chit chat low in IRC if we are actively working on something in there. Stay tuned Want to be the first to know about updates? You can follow me on Twitter - http://twitter.com/#!/_viperboy_

In developing this ICS ROM may I make a light suggestion that I think all might love?..... Could the search keay be remaped to function as the multi task soft key that is in ICS?
Maybe a feature like this would be something to look at after we had a daily driver type ROM but I felt it would be a good thought to throw in during this development stage. Thanks

I have the ICS source on my machine at home... I could set up a shell account for you if you wanted to do some work or just copy it to your own machine. It's not the fastest connection to download from, but it might be better then nothing if you continue to have issues.
I also have a build system set up and can provide shell access with remote adb to your device connected to your client. Quad-core, 4GB RAM, hardware RAID filesystem. PM me for more info.

Keeping it as simple as possible, no, you cannot do that.
There aren't any "scripts" for ICS to be used. Gingerbread ones will not work. Development will not get anywhere until we get a good leak for our device and looking at how there has been no ICS leaks for the E4GT or even information of one, I don't believe Samsung is currently working on ICS for it.
Sent from my SPH-D720 using XDA App
Alright guys, I should not even be saying anything but Im going to anyway. I know many of you are tired of waiting for ICS and feel like we are the odd man out while everyone else gets a taste of the glory. This is in fact not the case! I'm not going to name names, or comment on anything else, but I will say that development is VERY much alive for this phone. Its also allot closer than any of you think. Trust me, there is a very tallented group of people who are close to making this dream a reality.
Me making a comment in this thread does infact violate what this thread was intented to do and for that I'm sorry. My intention is just to inform you that we too shall taste sweet victory soon. My only request is that we move non-development related questions and comments to the Q&A or general subforum so we can keep this thread clean for future use. I look forward to basking in the sweet taste of a delicious sandwich with all of you very soon

Better user titles....

At the moment there are 3 normal user titles I am aware of:
Junior Member
(Something I forgot)
Senior Member
I think that xda should make some more, and make them more relevant to the theme of the forum.
Also, if we could have custom user titles, that would be great!
Already been posted...perhaps Search practice might be useful?

I'll sum it up for you (or try, anyway!)
There are Junior Members, Members, Senior Members first. These make up the vast majority of XDAs userbase.
Recognised Contributors are nominated by other users and/or Mods/Developers. They are recognised for their contributions which are not specifically Development, such as detailed guides, one-click utilities and other tools/mods.
Recognised Themers are also nominated by users/Mods/Developers, for their work themeing custom ROMs and providing standalone themes for flashing.
Recognised Developers are nominated and approved by the Developer Committee, for their work in Development whether it be ROMs, Root methods, bootloader unlocks etc.
Elite Recognised Developers are again assessed by the Developer Committee, and are deemed to have gone above-and-beyond in providing knowledge/hacks/tools/apps/ROMs for the XDA community.
Forum Moderators are appointed by the Moderator Committee, after submitting an application (see the 'sticky' at the top of this forum - currently applications are not open). They are the first-line of keeping the forums tidy, friendly and orderly.
Senior Moderators are the next step up the ladder, providing site-wide support for Forum Mods and looking after the nitty-gritty issues, as well as areas of XDA not policed by FSMs, such as the Marketplace.
Administrators are next. There are several Admins - each look after a specific part of XDA such as the Portal, the Members and the User Experience of XDA as a whole.
At the top is Mike Channon, who is overall Forum Administrator.
Other titles you may come across:
Moderator Committee - sits on the Mod Committee
Developer Committee - as above, but for Developer Committee
XDA Newswriter - publishes articles for the Portal (front page)
Retired xxxx - have since officially 'left' their XDA position
Hopefully that clears most of them up for you
Contrary to what a lot of people expect, the thanks-meter does not figure at all in determining a users tag.

That wouldn't really do anything useful honesty. The titles we have now are just fine an serve their purpose perfectly.
Also adding new titles would drive the mods nuts, having to decide who deserves what an why. Then having to remove titles from people who abuse it.
Honestly, be glad with what you got, no offense.

Loads of offence taken. And I was really talking about the main titles - the ones that normally update, but no matter

sorry bout that, I'm a bit tired. I think the ones we have now are pretty simple,I do agree a little change to them would be nice. Certain posts an thanks, earns you a specific title.

I agree with the OP, we should either rase the post count for Snr Member as everybody is one of them nowadays or have more ranks at much higher post rates.
so this was why you asked me how to be a RC...

Too be honest, I can't see this happening. Especially custom titles as a simply do not have the time to spend policing the utter crap that people would enter into that field.

I didn't think we would get custom user titles, but why cant we have better, more suited to the site user titles?
At the moment, they are using the default vB ones..

Because tbh the only titles of relevance are the recognised titles and anything else would only serve to lengthen somebodys e-peen, which is not something we want to encourage.
Sent From My Fingers To Your Face.....
there is no reason for anything beyond senior member because with anyone who has made 500 posts the thank count is more useful anyways...
although maybe something thanks based...
like after the title for every bar
ex Senior Member IX, Junior Member II, Member IV, etc
just a cool idea for IF admins are going to add/change titles and/or the titling system
It's been brought up before and the admins don't want rampant posters driving their count up just to get unique titles.

Chances are someone with over 1000 thanks is already "recognized" or could easily apply for it.

is this all about money?

Hi all,
I am a very inexperienced xda user so please bear with me about my
relevant forum incompetence.
My question is : why is this (and no doubt other) forum also much
about money and 'thanks' and 'status'?
Why so many 'donation' buttons, and why are so many downloads
confronting me with having to pay for faster results, not to speak
about annoying popup advertisements about members of opposite sex
that, supposedly, eagerly want to contact me?
I truly think sharing true knowledge stands beyond this kind of
nonsense. I think we are clever enough to figure out what information
is relevant (and we can easily correlate such information to who
provided or initiated it).
Moreover, sadly, in my (agreed limited) experience, provided
knowledge is often inverse proportional to provided advertisements or
requests for donations. The rule grew as easy for me as follows: if I
am asked to pay, I go elsewhere for advice.
This does not mean I do not contribute. On the contrary. If some
person helps me or can help me, I never hesitate to ask how I can
provide money in all discretion.
Thanks

XDA IS NOT about money, never has been. At XDA in any case, the 'Thanks' button serves no purpose other than to promote the person being thanked to continue to contribute. As for someone's status, it proves to show how active someone is within that particular forum/community.
Why so many 'donation' buttons, and why are so many downloads
confronting me with having to pay for faster results, not to speak

The 'Donation' buttons are just that. They are an option to contribute to someone for their efforts. There are many people here that devote much of their time to helping others, be it by building ROMs, creating themes, or spreading knowledge in general. As for where people upload their files to and what happens there, that is on the products author. That has nothing to do with XDA at all. The same with the ads that you are speaking of. If you are receiving them while on XDA, then report them here

To add to what shinobisoft said, the 'Thanks' button is mainly there to avoid clutter caused by useless 'Thanks!' posts.
Status titles aren't important either. Once you get past 10 (useful) posts, restrictions go away. See this post for details on why this was added.

Please use the report button if a member is demanding payment. File hosts offering faster, premium services is different. XDA provides the DevDB which allows ROM developers, for example, to upload their files on XDA's servers. They're free to use that but may choose to use other solutions. As long as it's in accordance with the rules (no PPC links, no reward programs that turn downloads into $$$ for the uploader,) it's fine.

You can report inappropriate ads here. Ads are not hand picked by XDA, but by the ad provider. XDA asks the provider to remove any offensive/annoying ads, but you must help by reporting them.

As it's been said, XDA is not about the money, at all. Donations are donations - you're free to make them if you feel the member is worthy. Again, if someone is asking for money in return for services, use the report button

Hi GermainZ, shinobisoft,
Thanks for the pointers to explanations for and answers to my questions.
have a nice day
If anything I think people here are looking for recognition more than they are money...just look at that new app by fernando sor "xda credibility". Sorta shows how this is sorta a competition. Regardless, xda is no exception to anything else, competition is in human nature

Maybe someone could move some other Threads according to the new subforum to fill it with life.
BTW - it would be very nice if Toengel could be the Moderator of this Subcategory. He is the owner of the only german Philips Blog for Android TVs and really into the subject.

Also, I have moved other ones to bring life to it. The rest will need to be reported by users if they come across misplaced threads.

By the way, and it's no criticism just a hint, moderators are not always able to monitor each single post in order to capture such requests i.e. they might get "lost".
But every post contains a so called "Report Post" button, by which you can easily, fast and reliable alert the responsible moderation team for various reasons. This also includes requests to move a thread. Details are available here.
I know. But thanks anyway.
