Post Your Android Saga - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Just out of curiosity:
How many Android phones have you all owned?
What Models?
How long Have you been on the Android Bandwagon?
Were you a smartphone user prior to Android?
My Progression: Mytouch 3g, Samsung Moment(painful), Evo Shift(went through 4), and now the E4GT
I thought it would be interesting to see how many smartphone veterans/early adopters we have active in our forum. This is NOT to determine who is a newb, we won't flame you if this is your first Android phone. In Fact, Welcome Aboard for anyone who is new to this OS and xda!

4. Nope, I came from an enV2. Yea, it was bad.
I've wanted to get an Android phone for a couple of years and finally got around to it. Now I'm playing catch up and learning how to develop.

The OG Epic, and now the Touch. My wife has the Transform.
I came from WM, then WebOS, now Android. Found the golden ticket.

G1 on launch date. Mytouch 3g. Vibrant. Epic 4g touch. If only the devs on this phone were half a roman or sombionix, then id be rooted by now. Slow and steady wins the race I guess.

Amazed at how many Android phones people have had, considering the OS has only been around for like 4 years. Guess I'm a newb as well..
Only 1 Android phone, the HTC Incredible.
I've had it since the launch date in April 2010.
And its my 1st smartphone, was using an incredibly old Motorola Razr before that..

[Q] Any former Touch Pro 2 owners?

Hi all,
My Touch Pro 2 died a few days ago and I'm seriously considering a jump to Sprint and the Epic 4g. I was wondering if there are any former TP2 owners here, and what your experience has been jumping from one to the other.
I've been actively involved with the XDAndroid project and running Android on my TP2 for several months up to the demise of my phone so I don't really need an OS comparison.
I'm more interested in a comparison of the hardware and aesthetics. IMO, the TP2's keyboard is the best keyboard in the history of smart phones and was definitely one of my favorite features of the TP2. How does the Epic 4G keyboard stack up?
Welcome fellow TP2 user
Epic keyboard is solid compared to the TP2. Key layout, button feel, and clicks are a bit different and may take some getting used to, but all in all, on par with TP2's keyboard.
Some users have had issues with keys skipping when typing really fast, but that can be remedied with a patch by theimpaler747.
Keyboard on epic has more real-estate too.
i also went from the tp2 to the epic
the tp2's keyboard is the best one ever (imo) but the epics is not that bad once you get the feel for it. It does have an issue but if you install the fix that ghostrid3r mention made by impaler then that will fix it.
The rest of the hardware is great . After you start using the epic you will really think that the tp2 is slooooowww.

Hey Toad, as an old TP2 user, I can say the Epic holds up pretty well keyboard wise. The TP2's keyboard was a bit bigger and spaced nicely but I didn't have too much of a problem switching over. Sammy did slack with recent updates slowing down key responce on the Epic, but as ghost said above, flash the impaler's patch and you'll be good to go.

As an old touch pro 2 user myself you will not mess your touch pro 2 at all. With the official android gingerbread right around the corner. You won't be missing your touch pro 2. Question what did you use your touch pro 2 for. This phone is probably 5 times faster than the touch pro 2. The screen is way better, the graphic processor is faster this phone has 4G. Brighter screen, more better potential, newer software in the market, better text to speech. I must admit windows mobile has better voice command but android is catching up. I also miss TomTom from windows mobile too. Other than that android beats windows mobile hands down with everything else. This is probably the best android phone on sprint right now. The camera is also better too. If you do get the samsung epic get launcher pro plus with beautiful widget and you won't miss HTC Sense at all. I must admit in my opinion touch wiz sucks. The HTC Sense on the touch pro 2 is better than touch wiz 2. But Laucher pro and beautiful widget is way faster than HTC Sense. The custom rom are also a lot faster than the stock roms. You can also try out the leaked gingerbread rom for the Samsung Epic you can play Netflix movies and they fix the screen rotation problem too.
Thanks for the replies folks! I've been looking at other carriers and phones. Verizon is ridiculously expensive, AT&T is the reason I'm leaving T-Mobile and the other slider devices Sprint offers don't quite compare to the Epic, so it looks like the Epic will be it.

EVO For An Epic????

Thinking about trading my EVO 4G for an Epic 4G......Why should I? Why shouldn't I? The reason I'm contemplating is because the EVO is about to become old news once the EVO 3D comes out....while the Galaxy S II has a later release date on Sprint..........plus I can run cm7 and basically have a nexus s with a keyboard minus the nfc chip.......what do you guys and gals think???

I would advise against it. My fiancee has an Epic Fail...and she hates it. It locks up all the time and the SMS goes out of order. The battery is horrid. The worst ones are those that came stock with 2.1 and later upgraded to 2.2. They lock up all the time.

The epic to me is old news already I have only seen one in my life time but with the addition of added bulk and a far less dev support I say stick with the evo
sent from my Motorola XOOM
The epic has been old news for a while now sadly. I used it for a week and hated it. I was so happy when I went to the Evo. I'm excited to see how the 3D compares to the original, although I am sure that the 3D will blow it away. You should either wait for the 3D or the GSII
bought the Epic on opening day and quickly regreted it. enough said, if you want new hardware go with the 3D. I will be staying HTC for a while to come..
epic
better screen colors
far better wifi speed..this is significant if you have a connection over 15Mb
better battery life using bonsai
keyboard if you need that (the slider is kinda soft though)
feels like a toy, due to all the plastic
buttons get a tad soft
evo wins
larger screen
better build quality
better dev support--big plus
battery life sucks
data connections seem about the same to me
I have them both sitting here, two separate account
My first recommendation would be to decide if you want a physical keyboard or not.
They add a lot of bulk and take space that can house other/faster components. I would never go back to a physical keyboard. I would rather a smaller/lighter phone with more screen real estate and a slimmer profile.
...however some ppl (my wife for example) miss the physical keyboard greatly which would change things...
Sent from my Mynioned EVO using XDA App
I had a Samsung vibrant, basically an epic without a keyboard. I hated it. Too much lag, bad GPS...good screen and huge internal storage were the only good things. Switched to sprint and the evo and haven't looked back
We're comin from a pure power source.
You'd hate it as much as I did.
The Epic feels very fat compared to the Evo. The slider is constantly trying to open when you don't want it to. Touchwiz is not as nice as Sense (if you're keeping them somewhat stock). The colors on the Epic, especially reds and oranges, seem way overboosted and unnatural on the Epic, and when watching movies on it, I could see a "screen door" type of thing on it.
I only had an Epic because I sent my Evo in for repairs (and opted out of Sprint's insurance). I had it for a week, and was REALLY happy to return it.
Evo to Epic
I wouldn't do it, I had an Epic and 1) nowhere as big as a developer/user base than for the Evo. 2) The LCD is nice but IMO the battery on Epic is less than that of the Evo. 3) the camera on my Epic just straight up died for a no reason after the 2.2 after was applied and would cease to ever work again. (google it, "camera failed to start samsung epic).
Keep the Evo!
I agree with the other posts. The epic adds too much bulk just for a keyboard which has low quality buttons and could better utilize this space for more and better hardware. Plus the Dev support is substantially less. Stick with the evo, it is much better

lol good luck getting CM7 or any custom rom to run on the Epic.
Lol....I know that's the only thing that is stopping me from doing the trade.....
Yeah and my wife also has the Epic. I get far better battery life than she does. We both leave work at the same time, and at the end of the day her phone is usually dead on the way home and I still have 30-40% left.
EVO For An Epic
I have both phones, and I think I am about to reiterate what a few people have said before. The epic does have a few things going for it, but I believe the user experience and SUPPORT are just way better for the evo. I took my evo back from my ex a week ago and it has been in my pocket way more than my epic. For a phone sprint likes to push as one of their top phones, the epic just doesn't have the support it needs from samsung. Long story short, stick with HTC.
The epic is Not a step forward. They are from the same generation of smartphones.
If you really want a keyboard, then you will want a Evo Shift.
Stick with the Evo... at least til you can get a 3d or whatever else is coming down the pipes. with the new GB update and all the new 3.0 roms out there, the Evo will have a nice new jolt of life.

Should I upgrade?

So I finally have a chance to upgrade my Samsung Moment, and I am wondering if I should wait for newer phones to come out(ie the Galaxy Nexus) or buy the Epic 4g Touch? I don't know how much longer I can use this janky phone for...

Epic touch 4G best phone hands down. as to my opinion, the epic touch is a really nice phone, fast, big, beautiful screen. etc. but the galaxy nexus is also very nice. depends on what u want. if u want android 4.0 galaxy nexus is the choice for u. but if u want a phone thats nice and will soon be upgraded to android 4.0 ( might even be better than galaxy nexus), The epic touch 4G. Also the user interfaces. Epic has TW4 and Galaxy nexus has the new ICS UI.
If your in a rush ... he the epic touch you won't be let down... also don't see sprint releasing anything good anytime soon

Yeah don't expect any major device to be released on Sprint until LTE nears implementation. E4GT is a nice choice if you want to stick with Sprint.

The two best phones now are the HTC EVO 3D and the Samsung Galaxy s2. I just recently sold my EVO 3D that I had since launch date and bought the this SG2 and I am really impressed with the Sammy! In fact I think its a better phone all together IMHO.
We just upgraded my wifes from the epic 4g to the gs2 touch on sprint...wow. I have a few friends w the galaxy nexus and I own a nexus s. The gs2 is a beast. I have ran ics roms and they are nice, I'm still waiting for my 4g ota but as far as her gs2, its the fastest phone I have used. It runs great. Battery is great. Camera is great. Lots of features I didn't expect. Built-in screenshot. Tilt zoom. Mhl adapted HDMI.
On ek02 its producing 85+ mflops and 4200+ quadrant stock...if anyone cared lol.
My vote...get the gs2. 0 disappointment
I upgraded from the moment when this phone came out and it is like a new world! I honestly don't see any reason not to. For the first month or so I just watched as the devs worked on this and the options available for this phone now are mind blowing! I would say go for it-I have yet to see a better option on any network.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
The epic touch is better in a hardware sense, but the evo 3d has been confirmed by sprint to be receiving ics, so it really is a matter of what is important to you. Evo is basically the sprint equivalent of Verizon's DROID branding. At this point I would wait for an official ics phone to be released.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Epic touch is a really good phone. Consider the phone on the galaxy nexus. Reviews have said it's nothing to write home about with it's lower 5mp camera and studdering camcorder. I love my nexus s 4g but I can tolerate the epic touch. Et has better camera and camcorder, option to add sd card, and I think the galaxy nexus doesn't have sd card support. When or if sprint gets the gn, it will be a great phone, but by then the bar will be raised higher with other competing phones. It will be a repeat performance of the ns4g. Nothing revolutionary about the hardware and other phones will out spec it. It will be fast but old news by then. I highly suggest to not get the iPhone 4s. I had it for two months and traded it in towards my epic touch. I kinda miss the phone but I don't miss the app store and apple's tight fitted grip on the os and mods or themes. There still isn't a jailbreak for it and nothing promising is on the horizon for being able to untethered jailbreak.
I would definitely go with the Epic 4g Touch. It's honestly an amazing phone. It's ridiculously light weight. Every iPhone user I know has phone envy when I whip this thing out. I don't doubt they will have it moreso when we've got ICS, CM9, CM7 and MIUI all working.

Getting t3h wife a new phone

Guys/Galls,
I am currently using a Epic Touch 4G with AOKP on it and I am very happy with it. My wife will change phones this month and I've been told by a couple of people that it would be better to get a nexus than the Epic 4G touch.
I did my research and it seems that the hardware is the same, except that the nexus has a lower resolution camera and no SD. it also seems that the battery life of the nexus doesn't compare to the epic 4g touch.
On the there hand, it seems that sprint is slashing the price of the epic 4g touch, I don't know if this means end of life for this device or what, I just don't want to renew a 2 years contract with a device that is near its live cycle. I am planning to leave her phone without hacking it so the OS will also make the difference.
Any recommendations?
Well, if you aren't going to root and ROM the phone, then go with the nexus, especially if she'll have the phone for the next two years.
The E4GT is better, hardware wise, but will stop getting officially upgraded, most likely, after ICS. It may see Jelly Bean, but I wouldn't bank on that.
The Galaxy Nexus probably will get Jelly Bean so it's your better long term option, unless you do decide to root and ROM.
Sent while hanging with that really hoopy frood Ford Prefect.
+1 on the galaxy nexus. It will get better software support and our camera isn't that much better. Also some may disagree but I personally like the galaxy nexus display over the epic 4g touch. But that being said the e4gt is a good phone too!

The thing is that there is no word on when is coming out, Sprint already got the new HTC so I don't know if they want to rush in to getting the SIII.
Personally I think it is a good idea to wait for the SIII but her phone (Evo 4G) is failing badly.

Another option is to just pick up something like an evo 3d for 150 off Craigslist or something to hold her over until the sgs3 comes along. That way you retain your upgrade and she still gets a much better phone at the same time. Speaking from personal experience the battery life is much better on a 3d than it is on an epic or evo 4g.
Just my two cents... I was never all that impressed with the galaxy nexus. A lot of hype for mediocre hardware.

Stay with the Epic Touch. Galaxy Nexus would be a big downgrade.
Evo LTE is CURRENTLY a downgrade because the sense4 software is abysmal.
Yes, we both come from Evos 4G (supersonic) and I will never go back to HTC as hardware or sense UI.
I know ill get flamed for this but here you go anyways.
Brick or "lose" the Evo 4g file a claim with Asuron and for 100$ deductible they will send you a refurb or new Evo3D, maybe even a GS2.
I would wait for the Galaxy SIII and compare all phones before you get locked in for another 2 years on contract.
I'm sorry but I had the evo 3d and there's no way it has better battery life than the Epic touch.
I think my 'Plan B' will be to re-flash the Evo with stock rom or something other than CM7 while i cross my fingers that it doesn't enter in that infamous boot loop within days.
If everything goes OK, this should buy me time for the SIII

Nexus, in my opinion would be the better phone to get since they have source and no limitations like we do with bricks and reflashing all the garbage. I have been thinking about going back to my Nexus S as that phone is so easy and there is so many roms for it without the risk of bricking it.

The nexus will get updates more often and most likely 5.0. It also has LTE and nfc.. Personally if they had the galaxy nexus when I got this phone I would have gotten it. But it's because it is a pure android phone no skins like touch wiz. With that being said other then not having LTE this phone is awesome and either choice you two will be happy until LTE is in your area

I know that hardware wise the S3 will be superior but lets get back on topic... this phone will not be rooted so all crapware that comes pre-installed from sprint will still be there, running eating space, resources and battery.
Will the S3 still be a better choice for a 2 years contract?

For the gs2 most bloatware was deletable regularly so I'm guessing it will be the same for the gs3
Since you are going to be on a contract you want a phone that is going to be top of the line as long as possible and all 3 of the mentioned phones should be that for at least another 2 years

Bye-bye HTC

Thought I would get this started, but how many are coming from an HTC device?

My last HTC was the Hero (I did love it, but it's slow as sh**.)
I've come from a few HTC devices (Mogul, Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2) and am currently on my EVO 3D. Glad to finally try out Samsung and see what the differences are between manufacturers!
To be honest I was loving the new EVO LTE until I saw it had no removable battery. Pretty much a deal breaker for me since I like to have spares, but that's just my opinion

I'm in the same boat, im currently using an Evo 3D, and had the Evo LTE for 13 days before returning it to order the SGS3...
I have had the Evo 4G also, so ive had HTC products for a while and like them, loved the Evo LTE and even like sense... but the 2 gigs of ram and removable battery, not to mention all the other features of the SGS3 made me switch...
also since i had been using Sense for so long, getting the Evo LTE didn't feel like this crazy new phone, sure it was fast, beautiful screen, good battery... but sense is sense... now i know i could have gotten different launchers, but i really haven't messed with launchers, roms, kernels since my OG Evo... honestly just dont have the time to do all that...
so touchwiz will be new for me and make it feel like a real new phone
Yes. Coming from OG EVO

As for Android... OG Droid, Incredible, OG Evo, Evo 3D, Sprint SGS2... Sometime in the future, a PB 32GB SGS3.
Epic Touch 4g / SGS2 is a great phone. But I like swapping often. Don't miss HTC Sense. Don't mind most of touchwiz though
All I have had has been HTC phones which include Mogul, Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2 and am currently on my EVO Shift. I always liked HTC and Sense but started to get upset with the 2.3 update bug that never got fixed and forced me to use the Go launcher which had a Sense 3.0 theme. Once I looked at the new evo lte it appeared boring and the same of what I have less a keyboard and a removable battery....couldn't get excited about it.
So I decided to jump into the S3 mix and see what happens. Concerns are the email client and exchange server integration aren't as good as HTC. I also understand the spell checking is not as good. I am a big corporate email user and need spell checking....this may be a deal breaker in me keeping the phone. mynwife also had a Samdung transform which was ****.
Anyone have experience with the sg3 email?

OG Evo here... it's still a nice phone. I got a 32gb coming sometime, and EvoLTE coming friday so I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be blown away twice
I'm still trying to decide if I want to exchange my EVO for the s3. Things I'm just concerned about is GPS and radios. Review from engadget stilll said GPS locks faster than EVO but EVO was more accurate. As far as doing speed test on att version, HTC had faster downloads but they did say they will re do test when phone is broken into. I went to EVO from e4gt and I never used 3g on my epic because it was HORRIBLE. I now use my 3g on my EVO a lot more since its actually decent to surf the net or xda app. I have till the 28th to decide so hopefully I get to play one at my store soon. Non removable battery not a killer for me since I can get 7+ hrs screen on and 17+ hrs of battery. I got a zagg rechargeble battery pack that I can use if I need to.

If you mean the comparison between the GSIII variants they said the opposite I believe.
Engadget said:
Both models lock onto GPS very quickly -- AT&T's is slightly faster at about three seconds, while Sprint's grabs your position within six to seven -- but we find Sprint's version offers up more precise coordinates.

Just sold my Evo 3D on Craigslist 3 days ago and have been using my oldschool palm pre for 3 days (talk about frustrating!) until my GS3 arrives, which is tomorrow thank the good Lord above! I suffered through a year of a terrible camera and even worse speaker phone on the 3D and am interested to see what Samsung is all about!
I manage my wifes phone and she's coming over from the original evo. Its a good phone and still in good condition but she's ready for something new. It will make a good backup phone.

yep, not at all impressed with the evo lte, will be exchanging it as soon as possible.
My last 5 phones was HTC(big grey pocket PC , mogul, tp1, tp2, evo). I got my hands on the GS2 n it was over... I'm Samsung for life now... still waiting for my 32gb s3...
OG Evo, but I decided to go big so I'm in 32GB limbo.
