Advertised Mango features you can't see or use - Windows Phone 7 General

This could be a help thread, if people could give pointers on what to do. What I can't see or use so far:
- Bing Vision to scan books
- Texts read to me / total control of messaging by voice
- When playing music, background artist picture is in the hub but not on the screen when phone is locked.
Will probably find others very soon.

The voice features are something you have to enable, same with the artist for the lock screen. Just take a look farther into the options.

Found them, thanks
Full Bing Vision is US only I guess

Isn't the Bing Vision book scanning issue part of the region-specific problem? I know it works perfectly for me in the US, and I didn't need to do anything to enable it.

All those features work perfectly fine for me.
For Bing Vision: Press the search button > In bing press the shortcut icon on the bottom bar that looks like an eye > Scan books, cd covers, barcodes, foreign languages, etc (may take a little while to show links depending on your internet connection)
For Zune Artist : Enable in Lockscreen settings (you have to be listening to music)
For Text to Speech: Press and hold the windows button > If any message appears read and follow instructions > Say: Text ‘Contact’. > Say your message > press send icon
You may need to go to settings and put a check box next to “Enable speech recognition over the network”. If you do need to do this, your phone will tell you when you attempt the above steps.

Next time try to spend some more time in the settings before making topics like these.

deleted. sorry

I did spend time in the settings but some things are needlessly burried. As for Bing Vision it definitely doesn't scan books, cd covers, etc. here in the UK.

Nope, all it does is scan text then gives you the option to search for the word or translate it. Ok if you want translation but no idea why you would want to search a word. Was hoping it would work similar to Google Goggles or Bings equivalent in the US.

Bing Vision book scanning, barcode scan (except QR), Local Scout, and Music are for US only. I hate it when Microsoft advertise something that's not available in your country.

To enable the Bing Scout, Visual and so on just set you location and locale to US. I'm in Canada and set it to US and I get that + my Zune hub gets artist pictures/backgrounds as well.

If you're in Europe, scanning with US locale would be useless as you wouldn't get local results (prices in dollars for instance). Local Scout works in the UK though.

Ah, right, never thought of that.

If in the UK, you can access Scout from Maps. After Maps has 'locked on' to where you are, you can use Scout from the menu at the bottom...

Qr codes are what I mostly use bing vision for. I petty much use all the mango features. Can't think of one I don't use.

72 Windows Phone 7 tips and tricks here:
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/36413/72-windows-phone-7-tips
Top 10 are:
1. Using the Windows Phone 7 voice controls
Press and hold the Windows key at the bottom of your screen and you can start talking to your phone. Try saying "Open Calendar", to see what we mean.
2. Adding apps to the Start screen
When you are in the long applications list on your phone pressing on an icon and holding brings up a contextual menu that gives you a series of options, one of which is "pin to start". Press on this option and the app will be shown on the Start screen.
3. Add people to the start page
No it's not just about adding apps to the start page, but people too. Find them in your contacts book, click on the "pin" icon, and they'll be added to your Start page so you can speed dial them whenever you need.
4. Moving your tiles around
Adding a new app or tile to the Start screen will place it right at the bottom. If you want it to be elsewhere, press and hold on the tile in question and then you are free to move it up and down and rearrange your tiles to best suit your needs.
5. Removing apps from the Start screen
You like the app, but you don't really want it on your Start screen anymore. No worries. Hold your finger on the tile in question for a couple of seconds and when it highlights press the no pin icon in the top right-hand corner.
6. Uninstalling apps
You've tried it and you don't like it. No problem. Head over to the menu list and press down on the app in question until you get the contextual menu. Select uninstall and you're done.
7. Rating and reviewing apps
You really love the new app you've downloaded, so much so that you want to rate and review it so anyone else interested knows whether it's any good or not. With Windows Phone 7 you don't have to wait until you delete it to rate it, you can rate and review it at any time. Press and hold down on the app in question until that contextual menu appears and then choose "Rate and review". It will bring up another page allowing you to have your say and give it a rating out of five. Easy peasy.
8. How to change the theme
If you've got your Windows Phone 7 phone from Vodafone the theme is going to be all red, O2 is dishing out blue themes and Orange, orange ones. An all red themed phone might be a bit much (we hear you), but fret not as you can change the colour of the tiles and other features in the Setting area. Zip on over to the menu list, select Settings, and then Theme. Here you can choose the colour of the background and the accent colour. Background options are "Black" or "White" while you'll get nine accent colours to pick from. Lime, anyone?
9. Swipe to the left
Windows Phone 7 is built around the idea of panoramic tiles that you swipe to reveal more content off screen. It's always worth seeing if you can swipe to the left as there might be more stuff waiting to be revealed.
10. What are the dots?
Whenever you see three dots at the bottom of the screen, that's a menu for more options. In photo playback for example, it will give you the options to delete the image or perform a quick upload.

I have some few questions:
- How to quickly switch the phone to Silent mode/Vibrate, etc?
Press the volume button on the side and change from Ring to Vibrate and vicer versa
- How to quickly stop the audioplayer playing when you are somewhere else in the menu ?
Press volume button and audioplayer should show in a bar at the top and you can pause the song
- Why some album cover arts are wrong, or black in Zune?
Don't know, haven't noticed that yet
- Is there a way to change the music/audio settings (equalizer, bass, treble ?)
Download HTC App Sound Enhancer, allows some changes to be made.

A couple of tips from me.
Firstly - More for O2 members here regarding call waiting, call divert etc. All from the O2 website as their help desk aren't up to speed on the device yet:-
If you're not reachable, you can:
Activate diverts by pressing * * 62 * 901 # [send]
Cancel diverts by pressing # # 62 # [send]
Check the status of your divert by pressing * # 62 # [send]
To divert calls when your phone is busy:
Press * * 67 * 901 # [send] to activate
Press # # 67 # [send] to cancel
Check status by pressing * # 67 # [send]
To divert calls when there's no reply:
Press * *61 * 901 * 11 * number of seconds # [send]
Cancel by Pressing # # 61 # [send]
Check status by pressing * # 61 # [send]
Note: You only need to press * 11 * if you want to change the length of time your phone rings before it goes to Voicemail. It's normally set to 30 seconds, but if you prefer, you can amend this to 5 - 25 seconds in increments of five seconds.
To divert all calls:
Key * * 21 * 901 # [send]
Cancel by keying # # 21 # [send]
Check status by keying * # 21 # [send]
To cancel all your diverts:
Key # # 002 # [send]
Call waiting
Call waiting lets you take another call when you're already on the phone. Just dial *43# [send] and you'll be able to see if someone's trying to get through when you're already on a call. It's free to all O2 customers.
Have set but not fully tested any of this yet. The device confirms the settings when you send so I'm assuming it has worked.
Next set of tips is for those of you wanting to use Exchange (whether business or personal) rather than Live for your contacts and calendar.
Outlook in Office 2010 will enable you to have 2 Exchange accounts on the same profile!! This means that if you have a business and personal exchange account you can have them both open on one Outlook at the same time and it means ..... you can do the same drag and drop as if you had used the Outlook connector to link to Live!
When setting up the Exchange accounts on the phone, remember - the Server is the OWA address not the actual server address.

Found out how to cut down on the number of Facebook contacts:
From the microsoft website
By default, all of your Facebook friends appear as contacts on your phone. If you have lots of Facebook friends showing up in your contacts list, you can choose to only show friends who are already contacts on your phone. (So, if a Facebook friend is also a contact in Windows Live or Google, their Facebook information will still show up in your contacts list. All other friends will be hidden from the list.)
1 From Start, flick left to the Applications list and then press Settings.
2 Press Applications and then press People.
3 Under Include Facebook friends as contacts, press Only add Facebook information to existing contacts to filter out Facebook friends who don't already have a contact card on your phone.
Note
This option only filters Facebook friends from your contacts list in People. It doesn't change whose social updates you'll see in What's new.

Contacts from SIM

Unfortunately it's not simple. This is how I did it...
I synced my HD2 phone with Outlook, then downloaded the Hotmail Outlook Connector which allowed me to sign into my Windows Live Hotmail account through Outlook then Outlook shows me two accounts - my old ActiveSync Local account and my Windows Live Hotmail account and it's just then a simple case of clicking and dragging from one to the other. The Windows Phone 7 will then just sync the changes automatically from your Windows Live account.

contacts from Outlook to my phone.
sameerabedi said:
I managed to successfully transfer my contacts from Outlook to my phone. As advised I downloaded Outlook Hotmail Connector from here and installed it.
It didn't make any noticeable changes in Outlook.
I then set up my Hotmail account in Outlook which synced with all my existing Hotmail contacts (all 10 of them!)
I then proceeded to copy all my Outlook contacts to my Hotmail contacts in Outlook and then synced the Mozart with my Windows Live ID (ie my Hotmail) and all the Contacts that I copied synced across as well!
Long and inconvenient for my liking, but saves having to enter them all individually one by one.
I initially thought it didn't work, because when I logged into my Hotmail on the web, it doesn't update the Contacts on there, but after syncing with my phone, it was fine.
I'm now going to try the same for the Calender as well. EDIT: Works for Calender as well!
Hope that helps.

Happy XMAS :
Go and get your WM7 or Android goldcard for free :
Link to the goldcard generator
In order to use the WM7 goldcard, just use an Host USB Cable (Developer Y-Cable) and connect a sdcard reader to it.
Edit :
For those who do not understand how to use the goldcard :
- Use any sdcard and a wm5 or android device to make the goldcard (Yet we do not know how to read the cid using WM7)
- Buy a Mini USB On the go Y-Cable like this one :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/DeLOCK-USB-...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1292614709&sr=8-1
Also buy a converter from standard usb to micro usb.
OR build a usb otg host cable by yourself.
- Get an external usb sdcard reader
- Connect the cable this way : Phone is connected to 1x usb sdcard reader and 1x usb port for power.
Then you can use your newly generated goldcard for flashing any HTC OEM Rom

To get your CID you need a wm 6.* phone and PSAS http://psas.revskills.de/
1) format your sd-card (fat) and put it in a wm6.* phone and sync it with the pc.
2) Install PSAS and run as admin.
3) goto calculators/generators
4) goto select a device key (pick any)
5) hit the "get sd card serial from WINCE device"
6) copy the generated key and paste it in "SD Card Serial (CID): *"on the goldcard generator web-page.

The list of people active on Facebook is in the messages hub and not in the Me hub.
I haven't tried the bing vision on RTM yet.

Well it was like this, when i had the beta for developers, the bing vision was fully functional and bing music was available. Now with RTM, bing vision is available but i can only can text and translate, and scan QR codes and MSFT - Tags. Bing Music is tab is not available anymore and neither is Local Scout.
Sorry for not being so specific.
I live in Sweden with carrier free LG Optimus 7.

that is odd. so you are missing scan books, cds and dvds? have you tried temporarily switching your System Locale to US (under settings/system/region and lanuage)? I know that worked for some with the previous beta. Scout is only on if you have "use my location" enabled under settings on the bing page (three dots)

I experienced this behavior in Mango Beta 2 once. Believe me, the Local Scout will only appear when the phone can recognize the place / town / city you are in. If it is not able to recognize that, the Scout button will not appear.
Just try going to a different location and launch Bing... you would see it again.

I don't have Bing Music either in Austria. I think it's only available in countries that have the Zune music store. Just like artists in the lock screen.

This depends on the language selected in Regional for Browser and Search. I think it is dependent on whether or not you can already use these features in your country. If you set it to UK you can do it all..
As far as the People Hub issue, if you're talking about seeing comments to posts, you can click on the post, and if its on more than one service, you can just go right or left on the pivots and it'll show you all the services.

Everybody who tried Mango tell us...

Here's the question for all of you who have tried Mango.
I am truly being bugged about the "500 new features" that MS is talking about.
All they're talking about is Bing Vision, Bing Audio, Integration with social networks, People Hub improvements...
Can someone write a new Mango feature that wasn't already stated in their promo videos?
I am also interested in customization. Are there any new options for users to customize their WP7?
Thanks!

You have to remember that the majority of the new features are behind the scenes for developers to make use of in their apps. Access to sockets and the phonebook are the few I'm aware of.
There're a few more things Microsoft hasn't shown in their marketing videos. For example Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), Front-Face-Camera, Visual Voice Mail, ...
These are just a few which came to my mind

im assuming that's via a bluetooth/handfree headset?
im mixed race with an italian accent so apart from "call mum" or "text karen" speech recognition is full of mistakes/misunderstandings and rarely use it
- Integrated Xbox Live Extras app
- IE9 HTML5 support
- Alphabetic application grouping (in the main app list)
- Native support for Twitter & LinkedIn
- Support for oriental languages
- Local Scout
- Help + How-To app (nice bonus for new users)
- Battery Saver mode
- Application-based settings in the Settings app
As it was said before, there are multiple additions on the developer side of the platform (most of them covered here: ht tp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff637516%28v=vs.92%29.aspx)
I had mango for a couple of weeks and I've just discovered how deep the contact history is. I didn't realize that you get jump lists for the time span ex (today, yesterday, this week, two weeks ago). When you select a text it takes right to that point in messaging. Makes it a lot easier when searching for a specific text. Could be good or bad depending on who is using it lol
Know what I'd like... Something simple like going straight to the DIALER when you click "Phone."
I shouldn't have to tap TWICE to get to the dialer.... On a PHONE.
Has someone mention the bluetooth headset showing ID3tag on the display ?
and multitasking of course
mango is great, i love the fact i have 1 year old phone and those dual core androids still has choppy browser, and we are having super smooth
Battery saver is a petty neat feature

Not to mention how many taps it takes to actually dial a number. But those two taps you need to get there are waaaaay too much. Of course.

Just off the top of my head,
ID3 tags through bluetooth
Fastforward and Rewind through bluetooth
Podcasts
Upload Video to facebook
Twitter in Me and People Hub
Facebook notifications in Me
Groups, which are excellent!
Linked inboxes
Multitasking
Changes to the dialer
Photohub now has people so you can view all your facebook contacts photos
Group Messaging (Which you should turn off if you dont have free MMS'!)
Colour changes in the SMS list
Marketplace layout improved
Marketplace now searches Apps/Music and so on seperately and you flick left and right to view each area.
Search now brings up Bing everywhere (except in IE if text is highlighted.)
Voice commands improved and much more vast.
Unlock from search button, voice (windows button) and from camera
Keyboard improvements, like guessing when you pressed b instead of space and so on
Im sure there is loads more too, but thats all I can think off atm.
Didn't hear this yet..
Dedicated thread for data fetch. No longer will we have apps that pause and lag. That occurs cause the data fetch and display code all ride on the sam thread. Well that's been fixed in mango and will allow a first class user experience. The apps should now flow as smooth as the OS UI itself.

Letters in main menu.

Hello. I just discovered a strange thing and I don't know how to get rid of it. So i was adding some music and I deployed "Sound enhancer" and after that my phone grouped all my apps in menu like it is done in people tab. So i have a huge letter above all my apps which makes my menu longer and it takes more time to find an app. It also doesn't look eyecandy. So i want you to ask how to get rid of those letters and bring my menu back to normal state.
Regards
okey~
It's not a bug, it's a feature. After a cetain amount of apps this is added to your menu. When you touch on one of the letters in the menu it will bring up a screen of letters. Touch on one of these and it will take you to those apps starting with the corresponding letter. This was added to reduce scrolling when you have a large amount of apps. If you do not like it I believe that uninstalling enough apps to bring you below the limit will disable the feature.
I know how it works. But is there no way to bring it back without uninstalling apps?
Not sure it goes away even if you uninstall apps.

Nope.
Surely it makes scrolling faster, not longer? For example, rather than scrolling all the way down to, say, 'Skype'...two taps and you are there in the 'S' section..
Either way, it cannot be disabled (except perhaps if you are fully unlocked, and edit the registry?)

You are right, and think only a fool might want to disable it! I purposefully installed 4 apps more that I won't ever use just to get those indexed letters on!
Use voice instead, it is the fastest. Hold windows key and say start "app name"

It gets better - say find "whatever address"
It will give you directions also (right above the web search)
or find "Store name" it will show that store closes to you.
and try find "movie name"
It will show theaters near you playing the movie
and find "weather in san fransisco" for example will show 5 day forcast via bing in websearch
Then find an iphone user that has siri and show him opening apps. Siri doesn't do that yet i use find flashlight all the time to use htc flashlight. it auto comes on when the app opens and it great for opening car or house door in the dark
enjoy!

Some Ideas for Google Now

Google is probably holding back with Google Now, not wanting to scare people away by releasing too many features too soon that show just how much it knows about us. Here are my ideas:
1. Send to Now – As you browse the web or read a book, you could highlight words or people’s names to Google Now so it loads up information about them for you to read through later.
2. Photos – when you take a photo of a landmark, Google Now could load a card with information about the landmark. I think Google Goggles already does this but now would be a better platform.
3. People – when you take or scan a photo of a person or their business card, Google Now could load up a card in the background with their LinkedIn or G+ profile.
4. Things – scan a barcode or object and Now loads up information (price, retailers etc) about it. Again, just like Goggles but better.
5. Rules – Google could let us write rules to trigger cards. For example, I could ask Now to pop up a card reminding me to take my groceries from the fridge in my office when I start my car (connect to my car’s Bluetooth) at work on a Friday evening. I already kind of do this with an app called Automate It by the way – it’s similar to Tasker.
6. Networking – Google Now could load profile cards of people nearby who have opted in to the networking feature.
7. Second Screen – Google Now when prompted could listen to what’s playing on your TV and offer more information about the programme. It could even offer links to purchase products advertised on TV or radio.
8. Related Articles – As you browse the web, Google Now could build up a list in the background of other articles related to those you have read and you could later review the list at your leisure - rating, reading and/or discarding the suggestions as you see fit.
9. Conversations - This one is a little scarier than the others and I’m not sure I would opt in to it myself, but Google Now could listen in on your phone and email conversations and provide related information – links to products you discussed or articles about concepts or news mentioned. As I say, I think I’d pass on this one.
10. Custom Cards – Google could let retailers or even websites build custom cards that are loaded when you check-in to their stores or visit their websites. These cards could include special offers and promotions, best-selling items etc. I imagine Google could even charge businesses for such a service if it were so inclined.
In all of this it would be important that they are opt in only – opt out wouldn’t be good enough. Also, Google Now should always remain non-intrusive but perhaps one should be allowed to set which cards should pop up as notifications, cause the phone to vibrate or simply load in the background. I might want a reminder to trigger a notification by the way but for others I may be happy to ignore or review at my convenience. By the way, I haven’t seen or used Google Now yet so if I’ve completely misunderstood how it works or could work, this is my excuse.
Oh and I apologise in advance if this is not the right forum – I couldn’t immediately find a better one and I see others have posted about Google Now here too, I guess since the G Nex is one of only two devices with it on at the moment.
What are your ideas for Google Now?

Isn't Calendar already integrated? I see reminders for my calendar entries in Now. Don't know about setting events via Now though, since it isn't completely functional in German / other languages than US english.
On topic, OP has some great ideas! Hope to see some of the less scary integrated

I see a reminder for this evening right now, it's definitely integrated
there was a interview with matias, and he confirmed that there is calendar feature, only reading from it.
there isn't any feature to create a calendar entry from NOW. but he emphasise that the API exist and all down to developers.
maybe hinting that its possible for 3rd party developer to write some custom card that can be installed?
I would love to be able to teach Google Now how to pronounce my name, placenames in my area etc. so that dictation works better.
Having said that, I find the accuracy of the dictation to be outstanding for most other things. I love GN!
There are so many possiblilities to this feature. I can't wait to see how it evolves over time. I actually use it quite a bit more than I thought I would. It makes a simple task so much easier, such as setting an alarm! Being able to set calendar appointments would be amazing though!

I think they're referring to that you can't use now to create a calendar event. If you want it to remind you of something, it can only set an alarm for you.
Music, it should tell you when an artist you like has a new single or album coming out, and if they are going to be playing a show withing X miles of your location. Or have just announced a tour etc.
Media, it should tell you when a new movie or video game is being released and give ratings for it and such.
I like idea number one, maybe adding in a dictionary for certain words, although that may be part of what your talking about.
That's one of the nice things I like about reading books on my Ipad. You can highlight a word in a book you're reading and, it will define the word.

Well for the concert notification, I stumbled upon an app called song kick. Which will scrap your Google music and pandora ( maybe something else too) and email you when an artist you liked or own content from is touring near you.

It should show a card every monday, wednesday, friday morning when I first unlock my device with the day's XKCD comic and the mousover text.
Keeping tabs on movie releasedates would be nice too. Google "The dark knight rises" and on the release day it shows up on a card with the theatre times for your cities movie theatres.
Connect with (Google) TV to give you a tvguide card when your watching tv.
Shows a card with directions to the nearest florists on your anniversary

Excellent idea. The more media related info the better imo.
One more feature I'd like to see is the ability to send a time or location based reminder to someone else. The person can then choose to accept the reminder or not. I suspect Apple will do this soon if they haven't already. The reminder could then appear in Google Now along with any notes the sender included.

Integration with Tripit.
Integrate with Tripit directly to send reminders of all the little tripit events you have, check-in, check-out, flights, etc.
I want there to be an actual notes app for which Google Now can create a note and save it.
