Okay, for those of you who haven't fired up your favorite tech-news site yet, AT&T announced that they are doing away with their $30/month unlimited data plan. Instead, we are going to have to pay $25/month for 2GB..... What the %^[email protected]?????? On average, do we consume more than 2GB/month of data on our Rhodiums? Between the browsing, streaming, and navigation programs I use, I'm not sure what my total data uses are. Please, someone calm me down and tell me that I'm going to be okay. ...yeah, but seriously, dang.........this sucks.......

I called AT&T customer support and found out that they are not forcing existing customers off unlimited. You have until June, 7th to get the unlimited plan, after that it is gone forever! Like I said, if you have it now, you're still good.
I saw that this morning too, it's the final straw. When they go to change it I will tell them I've a Customer since 1995 (SWB Wireless) , and I will be changing carriers. I've been unhappy since the merger everything has gone down hill. Also I will inform them since they are violating the contract I signed up for, they shouldn't be charging a breach of contract fee, but even at that, if they do I will gladly pay the $250 and tell them to shove it up their USB port !

I read the release. This is only for new customers and current customer will not be forced to move to their new plans. I tried an iPhone earlier this year. If this new plan had been in place, AT&T wouldn't have even been a consideration for me.
Are you kidding me? Not only they are charging me twice now as I used to pay for the same internet because I have a "smart" phone but now they want to kill us with this ?

I have Unlimted Text & Internet for dumbphone on my Fuze (and now my Tmobile TP2) for 30/month (with 5GB cap). My tilt 2 is in the mail. Hopefully when I switch to my tilt 2 they wont add a data plan to my account...
As stated above this change ONLY applies to NEW contracts....if your currently on the unlimited data plan then this will NOT affect you I only hope they're going to use this time that they're trying to buy to improve their data speed and coverage.
My personal opnion is the problems they're having is from all the iphone and ipad sheeple choking down the network with the gazillions of stupid useless apps they're downloading with no clue as to what they do other than "billybob down the street said this is a good ap to have" meanwhile it's got their phone runing as a proxy server for billybob to exploit.

I know, did the same when I switch from my tilt to the tilt2. Made me upgrade from old $15 unlimited data plan because "All new phone have to go to this." And now this? WT*?! I definitely will pay the money and go t-mobile and get the hd2 anyway else or verizon or sumthg.
I like how they keep screwing the customer and saying it's for the customer's benefit. AT&T is the new Verizon. Looks like it's time to start considering Sprint and T-Mobile now. AT&T is clearly down a path to screw customers while not improving service. They will continue to keep pulling these stunts until it's made very public and they are forced to get defensive about what they are doing.

So I just read that if you still have the plan you are cool at least until you need to upgrade again, is that right?
I've been with them about 10 yrs now, and it seems that way. Alot less and charge you more while only worry bout Apple.
The rep that I spoke with on the phone said that they were doing this to satisfy the customers that did not want to pay the $30/month requirement for smartphones. They will have two rates $25/month for 2GB and $15/month for 220MB. This way, one could get a new phone and just pay the $15/month to have a nice, new smartphone. That's my theory anyway.

If you read all of the info, and read AT&T's announcment it says that even at RENEWAL AND UPGRADE old users will be able to keep the unlimited. Also if you look at your account online, it will give you a chart for all of your internet usage since November 2009. You can see how much you use. Many will decide that unlimited is a waste and will "downgrade" to the 2 GB plan and save $5. Heck my wife loves the smart phone, but rarely uses any of the data features except a few emails... now she can get the $15 plan and save quite a bit each month.
Look at your usage, I would bet that you use much, much less than you think you do.
They also have a usage estimator. It is extremely difficult to hit 2 GB unless you a) stream (lots) of music or b) stream video. Normal net surfing and the occasional app download and tons of email fit very comfortably under the cap.

I stream video A LOT....going to work and coming back home I am normally watching some youtube old comedies like Unhappily ever after , etc so I may not be going with their lower rate plan.

which is a bull**** answer because if that were the case, they'd keep the unlimited option and add these to their portfolio.
It has been confirmed that you can keep your unlimited plan but that's until you upgrade your phone or your minute plan. This has always been the case.

I just renewed my family's 2-year contracts with unlimited data on 3 devices.
From the quote above, after my two year contacts expire, I can do an equipment upgrade and still keep my unlimited data plans. Is that correct?
By the time my 2-year contracts expires, I'm sure there will be alot of changes and other options to consider. Other carriers may be offering iPhones by then (for my wife and son), and I really don't like the direction that Windows Moble is going right now.
For me, a different carrier and a different device may be in order at the end of my current contract.

I thought about this a well. I checked my family's data usage.
My son uses a over a gigabyte of data a month on his iPhone.
I come in at just under a gigabyte on my Tilt2, but only because I'm more diligent about using WiFi or other data connections instead of 3G whenever possible.
My wife, on the other hand, averages about 150 to 200Kilobytes per month on her iPhone... which is the threshold for the new basic data plan.
So, will I be switch her to the cheaper plan? Probably not, considering that she has only had her iPhone for a couple of months. Chances are her data usage will only grow as she discovers better and more efficient ways to use her phone.

No, they are doing it because they don't have enough network capacity for all the smartphones they have sold. They are trying to keep people from using the bandwidth by making it expensive.
AT&T has been in a lot of hot water because their service has suffered due to their being the only network that offers the IPhone. From what I read, San Francisco and New York are having major problems with bandwidth.
Verizon started charging 9.95 a month for each smart phone. for a limited amount of data. They only have 4 phones that don't get charged that. We switched from Verizon because it would have cost me an extra 30 a month for my 3 kids who dont even go on the internet to have a decent phone to text. Maybe they are all going this route

Ok guys i did a little research and At&t buying T-Mobile is actually a good thing heirs my reasons why.
1.Larger variety of android phones or any ohone for that matter.
2.Yes we get to keep unlimited data plan because they have to take some of T-Mobiles customs to keep customers happy.
3.Almost every one you call will be mobile to mobile so less minutes you have to worry about.
4.Largest 4g network More Towers so better signal.
well those are my reason so hopefully it keeps you guys from going to Verizon or sprint -_-

Thats fine and dandy. But what happens when ATT decides to make changes. Add hidden fees, completely eliminate the unlimited data? Sure they will keep some of the features that Tmobile has, but nothing stays the same.
if they do keep the unlimited data, it will be a hell of a lot higher of a price per month then what we pay now.

My No contract Even More+ plan will be gone, and I'll have to pay almost double what I do now just to keep my service. They're going to honor current contracts but when they end its GG.
AT&T is going to ruin what made T-Mobile good.
I wouldn't have as much issue with AT&T if they weren't so ridiculous and expensive. They have data caps and their network is SO SLOW with all the iPhone users. Its absolutely ridiculous. I don't wanna be gimped from an awesome carrier just because AT&T can't build their own towers out.
It sucks, for sure.. att customers are the only ones to benefit since they stole our 4G. The plus side is that we won't see any changes for atleast a year..

The buyout is not a good thing at all. Less competition is never good. T-Mobile was Google's go-to network. The innovate Android phones always went to T-Mobile first.
One of the worst things about this whole deal is that T-Mobile phones will have to be replaced eventually. AT&T will be restructuring the whole network to use it's own 3G/4G frequencies, which T-Mobile phones aren't capable of using. So you'd be stuck on edge. It's supposed to take several years before the switch over is complete, so hopefully by then my G2 will be long outdated, since I just bought it a couple months ago at full price because I'm on a no-contract plan.

Ah, NO. The reason is that since tmobile will no longer exist, they won't lose any customers by raising prices since there is no longer any competition to run to. No, CDMA carriers are not competition.

That depends on what they intend to do with things. Maybe they'll transfer all of tmobile's customers over to att towers and use tmobile towers to implement LTE. If that happens, you aren't going to have any better coverage.
If history has taught us a lesson... Look at the case of Cingular being bought up by AT&T. Cingular was all about a huge variety of phones, great plans, and awesome reps (in store and on the support line) that made them great. When AT&T had swallowed them up, the integration took about 1-2 years where they were called "Cingular by AT&T" while keeping some of their nuances and then post integration they became AT&T with all the bad that AT&T brings.
To the original poster saying that there could be more Android devices from this deal... There is also no guarantee to that, because if he has forgotten... AT&T was the LAST provider to adopt Android phones and only did so because their iPhone honeymoon exclusive was over. Even then, if they do offer more Android devices... They could lock them down forcing users to side-load apps as see with Android phones like the Xperia X10 or Samsung Captivate. Also, they could end up capping future 4G devices as seen with the HTC Inspire.
As another poster in this thread said... LESS competition is BAD for the consumer and MORE competition is BETTER for the consumer.

it's truly saddening to me that the majority of people here are more concerned with cell towers and glorified walkie talkies than the underlying economic and (yes, I'm going there) societal impact of an acquisition of this magnitude.

I went into my local T-Mobile store and asked several questions about our phones working on At&t network and was told that At&t and T-Mobile are in the works of offering a universal sim card that will allow our phones (At&t/T-Mobile) to work on each others network. We'll see!
I'm a current AT&T customer and I can't say I disagree with much of the discussion here.
It's impossible to say how things will change a few years down the road, but one thing is definitely true:
Less Competition is NEVER good for the consumer. In the end we (ATT and T-Mobile customers) WILL pay more for service.
Let's see if the feds do their job and shoot down this acquisition...
1.Immediaely, yes. Long run, no.
2.Why do they have to make them happy? What alternative will we have? Verizon will be the only other somewhat decent option, and their incredibly overpriced and don't use GSM so we'd have to buy a new phone.
3. True, our 'family' will be growing, causing us to possibly use less minutes.... I don't use the amount given in the smallest family plan though.
4. Actual 4g network rather than fake 4g network is good, more towers are good, etc.... good point.
Things not concidered:
1. monopoly on GSM (monopolies are generally not good)
2. prices will eventually go up. you'll be grandfathered but things change, especially if you have no real competition.
3. at&t diferentiates tethering (this is where you will probably lose your grandfathered unlimited data).
4. economy hinderance: loss of jobs, no longer an 'affordable' choice for cell service, less providers means less money for phone anufactorers (minimal impact there for people).
5. Good bye, customer service....
I don't see how they are going to raise the prices of unlimited plan if you already have one...hence everyone that had an unlimited data plan with att before they changed pricing was grandfathered with no price change. I'm not happy about att buying tmo but the one thing I'm sure of is if you already have the plan they won't change it. When you want to change your cell plan is when you will lose it

I could be wrong, and I only skim the contracts, but haven't t-mobile customers signed contracts to be on T-mobile? If ATT absorbs their customer base and T-mobile no longer exists, do our contracts still remain?

the T-Mobile website merger Q&A states that they will keep everyone's contracted price. But I'm sure as soon as your contract ends, you're gonna be forced.
And I'm sure that once they required you to switch to an AT&T phone from a T-mobile phone because of the frequency switch, they'll make you end your contract and sign a new AT&T one anyways, so there goes that.
Years ago I worked for Verizon. On most days I would come across people that had been merged into Verizon from some other company. I remember one case where a customer had an unlimited voice plan for something like $30 a month. Now this was back before any one had an unlimited voice plan. When I looked into it the customer had been merged in about 2 or more years before and never been on a contract. Now from what I remember a company can not change your plan unless you consent. About the only way they can get you is if you do something like sign a new contract. Now they will try to trick you into changing from the grandfathered plan. So they can not kill or change our unlimited data plans.
I was with Cingular when they were bought out. I kept my Cingular contract right up until they came out with the Iphone and i was out of contract the whole time.
Now it will be interesting to see what becomes of Tmobile's prepay contract service.
AT&T buying out T-Mobile is BAD. Remember, it hasn't happened yet, and there's no way the DOJ will approve it anyway.
Sprint is scheduled to make an announcement concerning their network on October 7th. There have been rumors stating that Sprint will use EVDO Rev. B, and/or the 800MHz spectrum for better coverage.
However, I have this sinking feeling the news regarding their network isn't going to be good.
With all the recent policy changes, (Sprint capping Hotspot users, dropping their Premiere plans, reducing the return window for new phones from 30 days to 14, upping their activation, termination, and administrative fees, it's my fear that Sprint is going to be dropping their unlimited data plans all together.
I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but there's so much that's happened with Sprint in the last 30 days I can't help but feel the news they're going to relay is going to be anything but good.
What are your thoughts?
Theyll throttle before they cap it. Your main concern should be if you just bought a $700 phone that doesnt support a network starting less than a month later.

If you're referring to EVDO Rev. B then I have no idea.. Nobody seems to be able to give a definite answer to that.... >_<;;
I think is going to be about the Iphone. I hope they dont cap there data. Thats the only reason they have my service right now. If so, Good bye yellow and hello big Red.

I can say this. Our best buy Sept 27th ad leak had a spot saying that Oct 7th we would start taking Sprint Iphone preorders so you may be right.
I honestly believe Sprint made all these changes to their policy to help pay for the network improvements they plan to unveil Oct.. Sprint don't have the kind of cash reserve that AT&T or Verizon has. So I really do believe Oct. announcement is going to be for a better future.
i hope they dont throttle...there main selling point and even advertisements are the fact they dont cap or throttle

I don't think so. That is the only advantage they have over the other carriers and they won't drop that anytime soon IMO. Plus, they have already said that they will be announcing something big that is 4g related.

Yeah, that was AllTel. They basically lost all the 3G roaming contracts with all the AllTel towers that Verizon purchased.
I'm lucky enough to be in a state where most of the AllTel towers were taken over by CellOne instead... I get faster 3G data when I'm roaming in the middle of nowhere up north than I do here in the city.
If they start to cap their data, then there's no reason to stay with Sprint.

Good for you, but I don't. I'm stuck suffering with horrible data speeds, never reaching over 200 kbps download.
I hope Sprint does throttle--iPhone users. That's all we need is a bunch of iPhone users jumping on the already slow, overtaxed network making all of our experiences even worse. Unless, of course... they announce network infrastructure changes that mitigate the problme. All I know is that it couldn't be much worse here in Indianapolis than it's been the last six months or so--it's almost intolerable.

iPhone users use on average 400 MB per month, android is 600 MB.

Yeah, it's definitely about the iPhone5. "Unlimited data" is the only thing they have going for them. After all fees and everything is considered they are only $10 or so away from Verizon a month for me, and if I'm going to get capped I'm going to leave and at least get great coverage on a network with super-power level infrastructure and continual improvements at all levels.
I love Sprint, don't get me wrong...but fantastic customer service and $10 a month won't be enough for me to put up with also-ran data speeds and coverage.

The announcement will be about the iPhone5 and perhaps the "New Network Vision" or however they brand the things that Verizon does constantly without fanfare... If they announced tiered or "up to; then throttle" data plans I'm out and tens of thousands, nay, hundreds of thousands of others as well...they know better.
We've lost every other perk that kept me thrilled with Sprint, besides their fantastic customer service. (I am really impressed with their CS, seriously) I imagine it was to improve the network and continue supplying unlimited data, if not, pffft, piss off Sprint.
I think it's going to be a network announcement...
They need to make that announcement before they announce the iPhone will be available on Sprint.
The Oct 7th announcement will be that they will use EVDO Rev. B, and/or the 800MHz spectrum for better coverage.
That will allow them to subsequently announce the iPhone later, without the concerns for existing and prospective customers that the additional traffic will sink their network. Essentially, that upgrade will quadruple their bandwidth - pretty cool, and a good thing to do just prior to an iPhone announcement.

Ive been tossing around a idea in my head alot if people complain about sprints bad data speeds but i wonder is it our fault? Are we taking advantage of sprint with the free tethering clogging up data in top of the unlimited data we use but not paying causing sprint to lose money? im not tryna talk **** on anyone who tethers free cuz i do it to im just wondering are we hurting ourselves rather than helping?

Excessive use is a breach of contract. Some people have said they have had their service canceled because of high data usage.
And yes it is a drain on everyone else using that tower, and we all suffer as a result.
I wouldn't say it's our fault. It's Sprints fault for not properly upgrading the towers to accommodate for all the new subscribers.

It's Sprint's fault for not upgrading their network much [if at all] since 2003.
It's Sprint's fault for not estimating the data demands over their customers over the last two years.
But of course it isn't helpful when people use 60 GB of data a month.
Not all of us tether free even when rooted. This is Sprints fault. They know the ammount of data devices they sell and they should adjust their networks accordingly

Our fault? No fncking way. This is Sprint's fault. We might seem like a huge community on XDA...our phone and every other Sprint model...and there are an impressive number of accounts here. But, in the big picture, we are a drop in the bucket....it would take 25-50 of us on every tower tethering constantly streaming video or downloading torrents 100% of the time, saturating the line, with a perfect signal in line-of-sight of the tower for them to blame us for their network sucking. This is technology. It is constantly marching forward. Wireless is the new broadband. Period. Us geeks knew this years ago, even when it seemed absurd and the technology was an immeasurable amount of years away. Then it wasn't just close, it was here...and they did nothing...
...in fact...We are at the cutting edge, we are pushing this technology. We should be the benchmark by which the capability of their network is judged. If they scale their network according to if their entire network was composed of users only like us with our data usage they wouldn't have these problems...instead they over-sell and under-supply their network banking on people under utilizing the bandwidth they were promised. That's the most important cornerstone of any type of data connection business....we can't possible use it all up 100% of the time, right? They should scale the network to fit *our* needs, to play it safe.
...but then they would just sit on their asses that much longer into the next generation. Short term profits over long term viability...that's the new way. If they were to put that kind of investment into their network investors would be fncking furious because it would cost capital and the stock would sink momentarily once those expenditures were announced.

They were when I was on T Mobile also and even with me using their 21.1Mbps network it still slowed down often. Some people are just selfish and don't care that their data usage IS effecting others. Honestly it's more your fault than it is Sprint's.
You knew the network capabilities.
You knew how many people were on the network.
You knew the coverage area.
You knew how many people use smartphones.
You knew how much of a burden they are on any network.
You knew WiMax wasn't very good.
You went to the store and got the phone.
You upgraded for another 2 year contract.

Sprint supplies me with an unlimited connection. They told me so. They say that to millions of people every hour of every day. Whether that is via tethering or not is completely irrelevant... I can saturate the line, easily, without tethering using features that they proudly advertise....
... And the fact that a service provider cannot provide me with a service that they not only advertise as their crown jewel but I also pay for specifically is somehow my fault!?
If all of the "illegal" tethering were to stop right this second I'd wager it wouldn't make a bit of noticeable difference.

+1 on that... dont know about anyone else but I have been on Sprint for a while now and since my TP/Diamond days and well before that the network has been slow. Also in my area I am sure not every tower I am hitting has a large mass of people doing tethering and downloading torrents but I can tell you that my data speeds stay consistently slow. There are probably many factors here that contribute to our slow speeds so lets not finger point too much guys..

I think he may have a point there...
I pay for Hotspot and I also grabbed Wifi Tether 3.1 beta 6 and 3.1 beta 99. I can't believe they are going to cap Hotspot! $30 a month. I don't use torrents but I will probably download ROMs on the Wifi Tether to watch that cap. What will cap be on Hotspot and effective when?

It's true Restrictions do apply there are people however that do abuse the system though as well. In all honesty what's the appeal of doing torrents on a phone via a tethered connection? If you need something so bad use your computer at home I'm pretty sure the local internet provider is faster then Sprint's network.
with my first month on sprint now behind me I used less then 2 gig of data that's between watching a few video's on you tube and downloading market apps as well as just surfing the net on the phone while I'm on break. granted it might of been more but when I'm home I have a computer I can do all of those things on so why clog up the lines seriously.
I do agree a little though that even if Tethered apps went away I don't see it really affecting things much. But at least where I'm at I'm happy with the service and it's better then what I had with T-Mobile and it was great for school atleast till today (damn school jacking **** up so now ALL Sprint users are in the same boat as me LOS while at school for some dumb reason.)

This guys a fricken toolbox. Its very obvious even to sprint there networks are so heavily saturated because they didn't do upgrades fast enough. They were sent backpeddling with wimax and are scrambling and giving it a 110% right now supposedly with there new program to hit every tower in America with upgrades because they haven't been in the ball. Wait a bit and it should all be getting upgraded. Its lame when u arnt the Guy using TONS of bandwidth on your PC on torrents and you go to download your favorite Tom update and its maxing at .2Mb/sec but its all screwed up anyway. Let's dig a bit further...you advertize unlimited data, and I have the boriest night shift job in the world but I have this giganticus Android phone with a glorious app called Netflix, hallelujah, no more boredom at work.
One doesn't have to tether only to suck data. I could Netflix for hours a day (re: boring night job) and not be in violation of their ToS regarding tethering. Only if 3g was worth using...so slow.
As the last bastion in unlimited data, Sprint has to beef up their network and keep that niche carved up good, and we have to also cherish it too else it's easy for Sprint to start capping data (which is definitely coming).
Will I stop tethering? No. Why? Because between phone data usage AND the occasional tethering, I don't use up to 1gb (because 3g has become so slow I can't even use it for data intensive stuff like YouTube or even the afformentioned Netflix. At least 4g is decent when it works)

If "Unlimited" isn't actually unlimited then they should use a more precise word...oh...I dunno...like limited. The word exists and it means what they mean when they say the word that has the opposite meaning. Seems a little deceptive to me.
I have asked about this "Unlimited" with CSRs at my local Sprint store, my local Sprint corporate store, in online chat, over the phone etc etc etc, and regardless of what the fine print might say every single one of them over the past 2 years has told me that "Unlimited" means unlimited, without limit. I don't know, perhaps EVERYONE in the chain of command and EVERYONE being heavily advertised to and EVERYONE who payed for an "Unlimited" plan might--just might--be a little confused as to why the word "Unlimited" is being used when there are far more fitting and far less confusing words to use.
Unlimited meaning without limit, synonymous with "infinite supply of." How a company would stake their ENTIRE survival on a typo (and the iPhone) eludes me.
I have (without tethering at all) pulled 10-20gb in a month before, sometimes higher. I never heard a word. Is that wrong of me? No. I was sold "Unlimited data" I pay for "Unlimited data" and I think it is not unreasonable to use unlimited data in an unlimited fashion.
Sure, there might be some twaddle in the contract about using so much data that you degrade the experience for other users of the network being against the rules...but...for the past 6-8 months it has been nigh on impossible for me to get speeds (or consistent connections) that allow me to get the service that I paid for let alone enough of it that I could ruin anything for anyone else....

Umm, no thanks. I am very thankful At&t is not more like Tmobile or I would have spotty, at best, cell service. From a root standpoint with the advent of Lollipop on my Note 4 I have more apps then ever able to be put on the SD card, and file explorers can now write to the external card. Many to most of the bloatware can have data deleted, giving them many times 0 data, and then frozen. Yes I would like root for some other reasons just because I like have full control and I wish At&t didn't lock down the phone, but I want reliable cell and data service more.
As for overages, I just went and re read the agreement just to be sure nothing has changed. They still will throttle you and may be before you have reached your limit. And of course as I mentioned above, does me no good even if truly unlimited unthrottled if I don't have a signal.

You know, I have been devving for a long time, i have seen many devices come to the consumer locked down. I can count the number of times that ANY change.org or emails to carriers/mfg's has made any type of difference and that number is "0", zilch, zip, nada no way not once. what many people seem to forget is that the percentage of users who are members or devs here at XDA or any other forum is way less than 1% of the total market, more than 99% of users never even know anything at all about root or custom roms so unfortunately signing petitions and emails is nothing more than a futile waste of time.

Thanks for the support. I don't usually jump on board with change.org but the ceo of T-Mobile is awesome. Yes T-Mobile coverage can't compare with Verizon or AT&T, but they are trying to change that. Obtaining frequencies is not easy or cheap. T-Mobile morals are correct, and that's why I support them. I personally have Verizon unlimited coverage, but I hate Verizon the company.

John Legere is one of the most obnoxious people of the current wave of "media hungry" senior executives. Crashing another company's client event? Fighting with Donald Trump on Twitter? He's running a multi-billion dollar corporation not pledging a frat.
I have no interest in aligning with T-Mobile but am grateful that in their quest for market share they've forced the entire industry to lower its profit margin which has benefitted me personally. With discounts I'm paying $90 a month for two phones on AT&T with 7GB for of data which I'm thankful to John for. It doesn't mean I ever want to be part of his circus though or deal with the challenges of all their high frequency spectrum.
I also moved from Cox to U-Verse recently and am saving a fortune on similar service because of my "wireless customer" buy-more-and-save discount from AT&T. Communication and content delivery is a sophisticated game of which wireless is only a small part. Only VZW and AT&T were smart enough to make investments in other related categories like Internet and TV to guarantee them some revenue diversity and to position themselves to capitalize on the IoT of things as it evolves. I wouldn't count AT&T and VZW out; they may not be the low price leaders but they aren't stupid either.
Seems like some people just don't understand.
The only reason ATT and VZ could invest in the internet was because they are the only companies that have access to the utilities that provide them other than the cable companies.
Traditional Telecom companies like ATT and VZ are government assisted monopolies even if someone wanted to invest in the internet they would have to request access to the public utilities that are literally managed by ATT/VZ biased government
Remember they bought out all the baby bells to build their monopoly they are not going to just let anyone walk into their territory.
The only threat to the telecoms is technically Google Fiber but that is only possible due to Google's popularity and economic power. If tmo or any competitor tries to encroach into the telecom giant's territory it would be red tape nightmare. And they will be stuck on some gov. inspector's desk for a decade until they get anywhere.

Blah blah blah, that's all I hear out of T-Mobile but their coverage doesn't improve in my area. I am VERY grateful for the pricing strategies they've introduced which forced ATT/Verizon to follow suit, means cheaper service for me. But the last time I compared ATT to T-Mobile the savings were minimal in exchange for a marked worsening of reception, no thanks.

John Legere is douche. T-Mobile won't last for too long until someone buys them out or just dies.
