Quick ?, getting evo soon.

Hey guys, I haven't seen some of these dev names in a while Toast, Damage, Ra ;-) Anyway, I'm replacing my Hero with an Evo in a few days just to get the upgrade. My question is: Since I've been working with the Hero for all this time, is the EVO pretty close? I've spent a few hours reading around and it looks pretty straight forward Better than the Epic which I really don't want to mess with. Looks like there's a questions out there too so I'll see if I can help when it comes in! Thanks guys.

And why is the "White" one so much cheaper? I'm gonna bundle it up like a football player anyway so does it really matter? Who doesn't wanna save some change?

Fairly straight forward. Use unrevoked for the 1 click root, then bam, backup then start flashing. All the roms are found in the development section; Personally I recommend CM7 with the Tiamat kernel.

Or wait a few months for evo 3d and less then that for nexus.

That's fantastic, thank you. I'm currently running 2.3.3 on my hero with Clockwork and it's working much better than it was months ago. There's still some buzz around that forum but it's pretty easy going. I didn't see anything about Firerat's around here....is there something like that or a need for it? The Evo has decent memory compared to my lil Hero lol.

Ehh...I don't know. I was told I lose my upgrade privilege april 1st and I don't see a need for 2 cameras or 3d. Is that true though cuz I'm ready for a phone now. The Hero needs to be put to rest now

Yea the 3D has the 2 cameras in the back for stereoscopic 3D [how your eyes work]. And honestly the 3D is the current evo, with dual core processing, a slightly better gpu, and a bit more memory internally; I personally think you'll be okay getting the Evo now.

@Sammy. If you want I will sell you mine.mines rooted with all the works already.I found a way to make the Samsung galaxy tab make calls is the reason I want to switch. Let me know

Sorry man, I ended up ordering one a few minutes before I came back here. I was on the phone with Sprint getting my pin and he confirmed the april 1st deadline. Also he mentioned my TEP carries over, eventhough I bought it from a 3rd party. Good to know.

The EVO 3D has a bit more punch - but I'm completely happy with my EVO 4G. I used the Unrevoked's 1 click method, it was brain dead simple. Installed the HTSync, uninstalled it - then installed the hboot drivers, ran the unrevoked app, and in a few moments, I was rooted - w/o having to touch a thing.

A bit more punch yes but I see there's overclocked kernels out there. Who's dominating that one? I'm definitely going to try a sense rom (yea I know) and CM7. I owe it to Fresh, Toast and Damage to see what they've come up with for the EVO after all the work on the Hero.

Sounds good then tomodachi...also myn makes great roms. I do hope you enjoy them.

Myn's warm 2.2 RLS5 is a great ROM, smooth as butter and easy on battery life. I keep trying new ROMS but always end up coming back to Myn's as my daily ROM. Everything works on it. Just my 2 cents worth.

In listening to the evo noise, myn and mikfroyo seem to be the popular two.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback guys. It's nice to know I'm coming from AND going to a good forum. XDA is SUPER popular now! Brings the good and the bad though, I understand. I do my best not to answer dumb questions but some of these forums grow WAY too fast. The Epic forum is not friendly at all and it's keeping me from messing with the g/f's phone but you guys are great Thanks again and see you's all real soon. Hopefully by Tuesday.

The Evo is a year old. By the end of your contract it will be 3 and all of the devs will be long gone for newer phones.
Which sucks because the new phones coming out look like they're basically Evo's with dual processors. 3D isn't used widely enough to be worth caring about.
I got a 3D TV a few months ago and and yet to find some 3D porn.

Lol we have our fair share of grumpy people, but good on the whole. And thank you, welcome to the club.

I just realized I said "answer" but meant "ask" lol. This is why I don't mess with coding that much ;-) So, I got this "Ballistic Case" for the phone mostly because I have a "Bodyglove" for the Hero and I damn well know it'd be broken today without it. Yea, it'll make the phone a monster but it needs it. I'm in construction so it gets dropped every now and then. Is there anything else I should be thinking about before I put it to everyday use? Early adopters complained of battery life but I'm gonna assume that's been well addressed since then. Right now, I drop to about 55% on the Hero using CM7, current usage. I hope that circle battery mod I like so much is floating around here somewhere. I've got 20 gigs of Hero files LOL.

Well Its Official Our Phone is a piece of crap now that Evo 3d Duel Core is out...

Well now that the Evo 3d duel core phone is out today our phone is no longer the top dog... Now it is a piece of crap.... and sprint wont give me an upgrade until november! how dare they! So now i must be stuck trading between epics and evo 4g's every week! We need a support group... we can tell ourselves that our phone is great but lets face it no duel core and no duel cams either and no internal 4gb of internal ram,,,,, i need phoneagra from the makers of viagra.,...

It may not be the top current phone, but it is not a piece of crap. These kind of whining has got to stop among the mass public in the world. Everyone always complaining about their phones going "out of style" when new phones hit the market. Everyone always want to rush-buy the new phones, but always fail to realize that those phones will also be "out of style" when more phones hit the market. EVO 3D will be all the rave, but 6 months later...(next year?)..maybe sooner... EVO 3D will be considered "piece of crap" along with past phones. My gawd, the Epic is still a great phone. Stay with it for a few years, for sure I will. If you're rich, fine, keep getting new phones, who cares.

Are you gonna be able to do anything with the evo 3d that you don't do with the epic? NOOO. So why spend more money if you will only be able to do the same things you are now. My definition of a pos is having a samsung instinct when this epic was first released and some would prolly say hey that was still a nice phone and it was but the amount of new features that I got with this epic was astronomical. That sir is when you get new phones. Besides their will be no apps and te development will be really slow on that for a long time. So me ill wait a couple of years till everyone has the dualcores figured out really well.

The epic can't take 3d pics. And quad cores will be out by end of year so even 3d evo will .be soon outdated pos

In the rest of the phone world, epic lost it's crown soon after Tegra 2 phones were released.
Don't believe me? on the technical side, go look at the benchmarks. On the real world side, goto Radio Shack/Best Buy and play with those phones side by side to the your Epic.

i am just talking about the sprint devices. I also know that by the end of the year that quad core phones will be out... now sure if sprint will have quad core phones or not...

according to http://phandroid.com/2011/06/24/rumor-sprint-bringing-epic-4g-2-4g-galaxy-s-ii-in-q3/ the epic 4g 2 will be another piece of crap as it will be single core. As we know a flag ship phone must have the highest number of cores to date for the cell phone company.

[Q] I'm getting that feeling again.

This is NOT a Thread that I'm selling my Epic in, I need help deciding whether to keep my Epic or not. I want to change my Epic for an Evo 4G/BlackBerry. I like it and all, but the Epic just doesn't have enough development. I'd have to either get the Evo and Flash my phone EVERYday like I used to with my G1, or get a BlackBerry Bold 9650 and not Flash it at all. the Evo is a nice phone, it has all features working on CM7 which is a big plus for me, it's always up-to-date with MIUI, and was the phone I was going to get first, but it was sold out and I was impatient and I obviously regret it. Or, I could get a BlackBerry. Their much more simple and would meet my standards, but I'm afraid of Android-Withdrawal, but I could take it to OS6 and that looks cool.
So, what does everyone here think. Should I keep the Epic, let the price go down with more use, and wait to see what happens? Should I trade it in and get some cash and buy an Evo in order to fill my flashing addictions? Or should I sell it and buy a BlackBerry Tour2 9650 so that I can't Flash anymore, but have a pretty good phone? And the final option, should I just keep my Epic 4G, and live with it, and hope for the best?

Drop the epic and get an EVO lots of Rome to flash . Unless u Want to wait till September for the gingerbread update . Then the flashing begins for epic.

I don't know man. September is a few months away, and that IF we get GingerBread then. And even though, we'll have CM7 ROMs from 3 different developers, a few AOSP from a few different developers, and maybe 2 MIUI ROMs. I wonder if we'll ever have Sense or a Port of maybe the Droid3? Or LG Optimus 2X? I don't think we have enough people.

Someone is already working on a sense port, the same dev that's working on miui. And we have a cm7 alpha 4. We need gingerbread source code to help move us along.

I came from a BB bold 9700. I did some beta testing for OS 6 on it. It was very nice but that is all the tinkering you could do with it was put a leak version of the OS or beta test. So I would say you have already commented on "flash withdrawal" so BB will be nice for about a month then you will be bored with it. One of the reasons I got the Epic was because of the keyboard coming from a BB and the screen size. My other options were the Intercept (which my son has) or the Shift but again the screen sold me on the Epic. I didn't even look to root or custom ROMS for at least 2 months after I bought it. But once you start it is hard to go back.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind and are just looking for someone to talk you out of it... I carry a crackberry and my epic. The crackberry is free and I can do what I want with it, but I still keep an android that costs me ~40 bux a month and has horrific cell coverage most of the time just because it's an Android and the berry sucks for anything other than email.
I don't know much about the Evo other than it's large development base, crappy screen and lack of keyboard. If flashing a new ROM everyday is your goal, then get the Evo and live with the lackluster video performance and on screen keyboards.
If the only reason you're ditching the Epic is due to lack of development, then develop something...

I forgot to mention that the Epic's keyboard sucks and I barley use it. If at all. And I can't develop. My friends will think differently of me. Lol jk, I'm too lazy and I don't have the time. All these devs are high ballers. I wouldn't compare. They wouldn't take me as seriously.

I mean sure EvO has more roms but how many do you really need. My sister has an EVO and I read thru the EVO section and concluded only 4-5 roms are actually worth trying Synergy-Kingdom, MIkG, MIUI, CM7 or Gingerdeck and thats about it...The last three we will hopefully get once GB is released.

There totally should be an AFA (Android flashers Anon) cause I'd be in it.
I've only had the Epic for a couple months, but I wouldn't trade it for any of the other phones available for Sprint right now. It's fast, great hardware, and has a full keyboard. I use a handful of other devices for work, and my Epic is the best by far. (my Galaxy Tab is a close 2nd) It feels weird not having some new rom/customization come out every couple weeks or days on the Epic, but I've adapted to a slower dev cycle that I was used to. And honestly, the only thing keeping me from running one of the GB leaks is the lack of a custom kernel to fix the hw keyboard lag. So until there's something that feels and works as good or better than my Epic, I'll be hanging on to it for dear life..

No offense but hopefully sucks.....especially if u upgrade yearly.....the good thing I learned my lesson and not going through that again.

I just sent my EVO 3D back today so I can get the SGS2 on Friday. I came from the OG EVO 4G which was an amazing phone, but that EVO 3D sucked and was NOT worthy of the EVO name. I hated it more and more every day I had to use it. Even though I hate Samsung phones, I have high hopes for this thing. Even put a $50 deposit down on it so I am guaranteed one on Friday I hope they get MIUI working on it real quick!

Totally with you there bro. That E4G was legend, with good reason...the E3D (aside from being a terrible phone with a million issues...hardware and software) has a strange "me too" dev scene. Now, I'm never one to complain about the use of spare time by others, but, it seems like the E4G's legendary scene attracted an element to the E3D that lead to hundreds of "Roms" that are barely different from stock...yes, I know, there are often minute and significant differences between roms...half the fun was figuring out what that was....the E3D roms aren't even the "lame, theme on stock" roms....I was often stuck going over the change-log/first post trying to figure out what the hell I just downloaded.....
....I appreciate every bit of work every dev does, seriously, but, there was a very big 'band wagon effect' going on there and I tried to deny it at first.... but, I'll put it this way...I flashed tens of roms....20? 30? don't know.... How many times did I have to do a wipe?
I don't know, I never did one....not dalvik, not cache, no data, nothing....nothing borked, nothing.... and what was up with the fncking middle-school like drama? There was always some group of someone making the dev's pissed, or some group of "devs" pissed at another group of devs.....? Then people would get dramatic about an actual dev acting like an adult with no fncking time for kids ****. Flame away.
Perhaps I'll regret leaving it, the ungrateful prick that posts this really deserves regret, you know?....but that's fine, so long as this ET4G has a radio that can do as good as my 7 (8?) year old LG Fusic....buried in a 6 foot hole....we'll be good.

I couldn't agree more with this. That was literally my very first complaint about the 3D. As far as the dev drama was concerned, I never rooted my 3D b/c I was waiting for a decent AOSP ROM to come out so I never witnessed any of it. Sounds like a bunch of childish BS. Sense ROMs just weren't my thing and I agree totally about all the "me too" ROMs, the OG EVO had a ton of them too. Sorry, but the truth is 98% of the ROMs that are based off stock are damn near identical and don't even qualify as custom ROMs in my eye. I flashed MIUI on my EVO back in November and that was it for me.

As much as the radio sucked in the 3D and as much as that genuinely affected my professional life...umm...the 16:9 thing irked me the most. I'm a big dude with big hands that was used to an E4G, even the extra resolution never made it "okay"....though this is likely the last phone for guys like me and you...if the NexusPrime is any indication (1280x720) 16:9 is the "new way",so.....enjoy this phone. I'm extra glad it's 4.52", go out in style....with a bang...a gigantic, absurd, pocket filling bang.

I'm eligible for an upgrade again and it's extremely tempting to dump my Nexus S for this phone. I haven't looked it up, but will this phone get Cyanogen Mod? Not sure if I should jump on this phone on Friday or hold out for the Nexus Prime.

Finally getting rid of AT&T and getting arguably the best SGS2 variant in the process, you better believe I'm stoked

I just hope that the accessories start becoming available quickly! I can't live with only one battery. Very eager to get my hands on this thing. Wish I could find some info on how well the GPS works. Wirefly's part 2 video was nice, but he forgot all about the GPS.

I don't know, I never did one....not dalvik, not cache, no data, nothing....nothing borked, nothing.... and what was up with the fncking middle-school like drama? There was always some group of someone making the dev's pissed, or some group of "devs" pissed at another group of devs.....? Then people would get dramatic about an actual dev acting like an adult with no fncking time for kids ****. Flame away.
Perhaps I'll regret leaving it, the ungrateful prick that posts this really deserves regret, you know?....but that's fine, so long as this ET4G has a radio that can do as good as my 7 (8?) year old LG Fusic....buried in a 6 foot hole....we'll be good.

I cant wait til friday. Ive never been so excited for a gadget before. Its literally hard to sleep at this point waiting for friday

Why you guys hate on the 3D so much? I love my 3D I think sense 3.0 blows the doors off crappy touchwiz not to mention the screen resolution is higher. I thought about getting the GSII but HTC has a much better interface in my opinion.

I'm waiting on Fri also. I'm within my 30 day return policy on the 3vo. Got till the 22nd.
I really hate this phone.. non responsive screen, random reboots, crappy speakers.
Hopefully sprint will let me trade up for the GS2.

Does anybody have dreams of their phone?

Last night I had a dream I was playing with my phone but it was all melted looking but still functional. I've had other dreams where im trying to talk to someone, I can hear a voice but can never understand what they're saying. Anybody have weird dreams that are phone related?

I see that you started an entire new thread to discuss the exact same subject that already had a thread on the pretense of providing a different link that you could have shared in that one. Is that what you "did" or am I missing something more subtle and clever?

Los Angeles data speeds 130k down, barely measurable up? I get better speeds in Tijuana. That is putting ice sculptures in the McDonald's bathroom.

I have dreams of smacking people over the head with my phone now that I have a Ballistic Case on it. Specifically, those people that come on forums like this and do nothing but ***** about everything.
