[Q] Desire crashed now doesn't get any further than logo boot screen, recover data? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone
Had an HTC Desire (A8181) for about 14 months from O2 in the UK. I debranded it over a year ago (can't remember what with though) and it has been working fine. Started rebooting randomly about 2 months ago but not that often, think it's a temperature thing.
Today though the random reboot happened but it wouldn't boot up past the HTC startup screen.
Took the battery out, left it for 30 mins and still doesn't get past that.
I can get into the boot menu by holding the volume down button. The recovery option in the boot menu doesn't seem to do anything, just stuck on the HTC logo boot screen.
The info I get at the boot menu is:

So I started looking into all this stuff (wish I had properly rooted with a custom ROM a while back now) and I need to somehow get clockwork recovery on there so I can run a backup image of the phone memory before loading a new ROM.
I've installed the unrevoked modified usb drivers and when I boot into the boot menu I can see the "hboot usb plug" option.
But the reflash package needs me to have access to the usb debugging menu option. My phone doesn't boot so that's a no-go.
To make matters worse I've got S-ON on my phone which seems to make things much harder (according to this thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275632)
And to make things even harder, I don't have access to a microSD reader/adaptor at the moment as I'm abroad. So the Desire is my only microSD device. I believe there might be a way of pushing files onto the device with the Android SDK.
So basically, is there anything I can do to preserve any data on the phone memory?
Or am I just going to have to deal with erasing it and learn an important lesson?
I've got a fairly old backup of contacts on the SD card but if there's anyway to get the most recent data then that would be great! It's my ColorNotes notes that I'm most annoyed about, I believe they're stored in the phone memory.
I wish all important user data was stored on the SD card to prevent situations like this. But mainly I wish I had a more recent backup to prevent situations like this
Cheers, B

you're going to lose all the data. Sorry. You should always make a backup every once in a while to prevent this.
Afraid you will lose all data.. and since you don't have root or recovery then you're going to have to use a RUU and bring your phone back to stock. Remember there is always a risk involved when using RUU's.... but to give you some confidence however.. I did just use a RUU on my phone a few minutes ago and everything went fine without any problems.. and I've done it several times before too...

Yeah I figured I would lose all my data.
I'll have to look at some sort of contacts to SD card auto-backup system for the future. It turns out my latest backup will probably be adequate, I don't actually change my contacts that often.
Do I have to bring the phone back to stock though?
Or could I just root and install cyanogen mod or something?
Per this guide...
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_(GSM):_Full_Update_Guide#Gaining_S-OFF_.26_Installing_a_Custom_Recovery_Image
(sorry not permitted to post links yet)
I do now have access to a MicroSD reader so that should make things easier.
Cheers, B

you can only root or S-OFF when you are booted into the system, in your case you are not and since you have no recovery your only choice is a RUU.

Gotcha
Just following your troubleshooting info at...
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275632
The section that says "I'm S-ON, I can't boot recovery, and my phone doesn't boot"
Got my goldcard created. Actually had one from when I debranded last year.
But when I try running the RRU executable, it can't find my phone despite it being connected via USB. I think I've got the order of the process messed up.
At what point do I turn my phone on and go into fastboot?
Before it's connected via USB?
Do I run the RRU exe once the phone is booted and connected? Or connect the phone while RRU is running?
Cheers, B
PS: Thanks for the info so far from a fellow Londoner!

boot into fastboot, connect via USB, then run the RUU.
---------- Post added at 09:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:10 PM ----------
if your goldcard works you WILL NOT receive a CID error. if it doesn't then you will. simple as lol.

Yeah actually got it reverted to stock using the PB99IMG.zip method on my gold card and now I'm back up and running!
Thinking I'll probably do the S-OFF and CyanogenMod thing now.
Though I'm finding my phone is continuing to reboot every so often so I think I might be struck by the HTC Desire reboot of death I've found mentioned in other forums. So might hold on until I've found out whether I need to return it.
Thanks for all the help!!
Cheers, B

Major Issues, need help please.

Hi all, I’m having a major issue.
ROM is CyanogenMod 6.0.1
S-Off
Radio 2.15.00.07.28
I left Dinc in a hot car, direct Sunlight, 100 degrees, 8 hours, on the charger.
When I returned to my car, I had an orange LED and non-responsive phone.
I pulled Battery and held the phone to the A/C for a few minutes and powered it on, the phone entered a reboot cycle. Pulled battery and drove home.
Once home, I booted into recovery and reverted to my last backup. When I booted the phone, it locked wile mounting SD Card. Pulled Battery and booted into recovery, cleared cache. Boot into “Getting Started”, locked up. Next I did a factory reset.
The phone seems operational and stable at this time, but I have yet to sync or try to restore my Titanium backup. As a matter of fact, I’m thinking I may go back to stock Sense. I haven’t seen the 2.2 update, and the blogs are full of reports of things to come. I don’t want to give up Root…
… as I was just researching going back to the stock ROM / Radio I noticed my phone was locked up. So now I turn to you guys...
Help?
Well if your able to get it to boot then Its not completely bricked thankfully.
Also since your S-off You can flash the 2.2 RUU. Once that is done you can then run Unrevoked 3.21 and get root again.
I do worry about your phone locking up though. What hboot version do you have?
You should have
Hboot Version: 0.92.0000
I ask as if you don't already have this then you will end up being flashed with the RUU. I would hate to see your phone lock up while flashing the Hboot as that would be instant brick.
Also your phone may be damaged from being in the heat like that. I know my phone gets stupid hot when plugged into a car charger and have had that blinking orange light. If running the RUU does not resolve the issue of the phone locking up then you're going to have to call your carrier and possible get them to replace it.
Baseband is 2.15.00.07.28
But HBOOT is 0.79.0000
I begining to think the issue is the SDCard but I have loaded it on my PC and it appears fine.
Try running the phone with a different SD card for a while and see if it still locks up.
If you run the RUU your going to be updated to Hboot 0.92.0000 but as stated in my reply above I would hate to see it lock up while flashing this.
Okay, let me see if I can find the 2.2 RUU and a install guide. I have the 2 gig SD card that came with the phone someplace...

I would recommend reformatting the 2GB SanDisk card to the FAT32 format before using it too (no idea why it's just FAT by default). Probably wouldn't make a difference in what you are doing, but it was a hang up for me when trying to upgrade manually from 2.1-update1 to 2.2.
Okay, downloaded the RUU and HTC Sync.
Installed HTC Sync
Connected the phone over USB and ran the RUU.
Wile the RUU was running, an additional driver installed, and required a reboot. RUU error out with "Unable to communicate with the device"
Pulled battery from the phone, restarted the computer.
RUU can not connect.
Uninstall HTC Sync, reinstalled HTC Sync. Reconnected phone, ran the RUU... same thing... driver starts installing mid way through, request a reboot of my windows box, RUU reports unable to communicate.
Any ideas?
Got it... I know you guys where freaking out as much as I was.
I had to change the driver for the boot loader... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776056

[Q] Another i broke my phone thread. [HTC Desire Brick]

Hoping someone can help me with this.
Ive been searching around various forums and such and the level of info is slightly overwhelming. Im kinda at at loss of which
route to go down. However most of what i have tried has not worked.
I have an HTC Desire, it was origanally running on orange. However, i unbranded it and unlocked it then installed a stock
HTC rom. Eventually updated to Froyo. This was done some time ago and i really dont remember what steps i took.
The Phone has been running fine with no issues, reboots or lockups at all. I had been using a "Three" sim and running fine for months.
I was playing "Angry Birds" (damn addictive game) with the charger plugged in an charging when the phone rebooted and got stuck on the HTC
Boot logo screen.
Im totally unable to boot into android and alas cant access the system.
It seems im unable to access adb in anyway but i seem to be able to run fastboot commands somewhat successfully.
I have no real way to access the SD card, i have no micro sd card convertor and i guess i cant access it if i cant boot into
android?
The only real info i can provide is from the Power+Back Screen:

Unfortunately i bought this phone on ebay, so i cant send it back to orange (it was someones contract replacement, and uneeded)
Having read around it seems that HBOOT 93 and SHIP S-ON pretty much makes this unrecoverable?
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks in advance
*Update*
Partly answered my own question. Seems im able to add items to the sd card via fastboot flash /sdcard/ filename
However still not sure what files to add
could you boot into the recovery?
in fastboot mode, use vol down and power button to select.

Yes, however upon pressing recovery it goes back to the HTC Boot Logo.
Bumping this for my sanity.
have you tried flashing a PB99IMG.zip?
Ive tried sending a few PB99IMG files via fastboot flash /sdcard/ PB99IMG.zip
The file seems to send fine and i can see the progress bar on the fastboot interface on the phone. However i always get a message back about the signature being wrong. Perhaps as a result of the wrong PB file?
your phone crashing without you doing anything except gaming could indicate an hardware issue.
anyways, first of all, going to htc boot logo when choosing recovery is pretty normal - it takes about 20 seconds until recovery is started.
if it doesnt start after that time, your internal data is bugged. install one of those RUU roms, to bring back you phone to factory default os. you have to root it again afterwards, but it should restore a working system.
there are a lot of other ways to restore your phone, but try these first
Murdock thanks for the advice. I had previously tried a a few RUU's however it would never let me install a version older than i already had.
I also had a fair few niggles getting the PC to recognise my phone during RUU install.
I got around this by using the older version of HTC sync which worked great (v 2.0.40)
After searching around i managed to find:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe
This worked fine and currently the phone is working. However, it has rebooted itself once. I can only hope it stays stable as ive no idea about persistant boot issues.
If anyone is interested in the older version og HTC Sync or the Froyo RUU i shall be happy to upload them

[Q] Unique problem(Stuck at splash screen.Cannot get into recovery mode, only Hboot

I thought I had it all figured. Root, with Clockwork Recovery, Rom Manager. Nothing could go wrong. Now I am stuck at the splash screen with no Clockwork Recovery.
I searched fourum after forum to find a solution, but mine seems to be different. Just so you know I am 21, and a freelance computer technician so I am not afraid of the command line
What have I done to my device:
=Originally it had 2.1
=I rooted the phone via exploid method
=I installed CyanogenMod 6.1.1
+My computer only recognized my phone in HBoot mode, I think usb debugging is turned off though because I cannot acces my sd while it is in my phone.
I do have a microsd card reader
+I tried Esprimg.zip updates. It works .but I still cannot get into recovery mode.
For extra precaution, I backed up all of my sd card data on my pc.
Symptoms and problems:
+I am stuck at the white My tough slide 3g splash screen.
Holding up and power for at least 30 seconds does not get me in recovery mode. All I see is the white My tough slide 3g splash screen. No Black screen with a triangle(Biggest Problem)
+Holding down and power does get me into the HBoot.
+The recovery option will make the Mytouch slide reboot, but it will freeze at the splash screen.
+The clear storage option executed, but it did not solve my problems.
+I have also removed the battery, sim, and sd card.
Summuaray-
I need to get Into Recovery mode, but when I press up and power it does not work. I only see a white.I never though there would be a day where I could not get into recovery.
Also, I constantly charge the device so it wont turn off during an update.
Do you have S-OFF? If you do it should not be hard to recover.
If you don't I can't think of any other method now. But just to make sure which Esprimg.zip method did you tried? Because that should work in the first place.
Mine says S-On
Esprimg.zip
I used my microsd card reader to put esprimg.zip on the sd card. Boot the device while holding down and power. I let the phone check for the esprimg.zip and then the update was successful.
Conclusion:
I hold up and power and i cannot access recovery mode.
Possible causes:
By doing the clear storage, would that change my device to s-on. Honestly I never noticed s-on until now. However, I was able to root and get clockword mod 6.1.1 and it ran smoothly for a weeks.

No. Only by flashing another bootloader will you get S-ON back. You probably did not have S-OFF before anyways but FYI Esprimg.zip does flash the bootloader so you're stuck on S-ON for now.
If the Esprimg.zip update method was successful it should have flashed back the stock recovery for you. I can't think of anything that could go wrong at this point except that u have a bad or corrupted Esprimg.zip. Did you use the champion build or the ENG build? If me I'd try to download it again and give it another go.
Good luck!
Ok so Esprimg.zip may be bad, and pretty much that is my only saviour;ok I understand.
I was using Esprimg.zip from other guides. Those were 137 mb
This time I used the one from here.
HOW-TO * Flash the Eng-Release to the Slide *6/15/2010
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703076
I am going to assume this the the eng build. It was 137.1 mb.
If this does not work the I guess I have to go champion build.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Failed
Champion build esprimg.zip is next.
A few more ideas.
manually install the recovery using fastboot.
troubleshooting without simcard?
My spl s-on so would that be possible?
Is there a way to maybe re root?
I read in one post that a guy sold it on ebay..i would hate to do that with just a month of ownership. would Htc make a warranty request even though I bought it used. Besides you only see bootloader and hboot spl s-on so how could they tell?
So you reach the screen where it asked you whether you want to install the update, you choose "yes" and it goes on to flash everything, radio, bootloader, yada yada, and it fails to boot?
Basically with S-OFF you can boot into fastboot and run
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
in this case recovery img is CWM recovery. With S-ON fastboot flash is disable so it's not possible.
EDIT: If you do have the champion build on it's basically stock.
I have this exact same issue right now, I've tried the champion and engineering builds of ESPRIMG but with no success. I can't think of anything else that would be causing this in the first place, which is making it so difficult to troubleshoot. The only difference is that I was using CM7 instead of 6, but the exact same thing is going on. I have tried everything that the OP has with no luck. The only possible cause I can think of is that something was somehow corrupted while the phone was on and sitting on my table...because when I picked it back up, it was off and when I tried to boot, I got splash screen... Any other ideas?? I'm all out and just sitting here waiting for some genius light bulb to go off....attic's kinda dusty though..
With S-ON fastboot flash is disable so it's not possible.
So basically these are my options
esprimg.zip (if that does not work then use different)
Hboot clear memory,
with S-ON I have limited option
and keep it charged.
Although with fastboot and s-on is there something I could do?
Would rerooting be an option
darko4 said:

I don't see a root method in the forum that does not involve booting into a usable system.
Wait, you guys were able to flash the esprimg.zip right? Because in the guide when it says it requires root it's for flashing the mtd0.img first before rebooting into HBoot. Since you don't have a working system you cannot do that and if HBoot refuse to take your esprimg.zip then you need to do the Goldcard method. Otherwise I don't see why having root will make a difference.
So at this stage of the game I should do this..
1.get on my knees
2.put my hands together.
3.and just pray?
ok all jokes aside. Continue to try Esprimg.zip and update(all are successful but I still get splash)
I can't change my recovery since I have s-on
and no way of getting s off since i cant get in the phone, not even recovery, just h boot
So in a sense i have a lovely soft bricked mytouch 3g slide.
Later I might compose a list of the programs i had on the device, but i doubt that would make a difference. I appreciate the help and assistance, I am going to click the thank button for you gents.
In the mean while i got a tmobile comet for 136 one day shipping..No rooting on this one cause finals are coming and I do not have time to troubleshoot for hours. I love android cause of custom roms, but not being able to get in recovery mode...ah say no more. I am going to be one of those people who just downloads free software and complain to phone carriers about OTA.
Same here. I held off rooting and all until my exams were over because I know I'm going to go all the way until I get S-OFF.
I know many discourage S-OFF because it can potentially brick during the process but if you do read up and follow instructions very carefully it is really not that risky. And it'll be very useful in situations like this.
I'm sorry to hear you have a soft-brick. Maybe a dev will stumble upon and provides new insights but I afraid this is all we have in the forum for now.
to be honest i skimmed through the post, and im sure you did try this but just want to ask have you tried the official RUU update to see if you can get things back up running that way?
yeah I understand following directions carefully, but when you follow all of directions and get it working, and make backups, but then you turn the phone off and then turn it on. Then all of this happens.
ah let me stop my whining and download more esprimg.zip .
I just want to know what caused it. was it an application, cause if that is the case then I want to know so no one else get hurt.
(one interesting note, avg antivirus said my device was infected with viruses. It said with the apps, I did not clean it. i uninstalled avg. I presumed it was a false alarm cause the phone is rooted with applications with high privileged) Oh well
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
oh well. back to the esprimg.zip
never tried RUU, if it comes in a esprimg.zip then i guess i can try. if not then i do not know how to use it with mine in its current state
S on (so no advanced fast boot options
Hboot only
no recovery.
clear memory
only productive thing is successful esprimg.zip updates
its the official update to froyo, and need HTCsync and the RUU from htc how the installs procces goes i dont really know, but im sure there is a RUU update that you can use to update via bootloader,
ok i got htc sync
and the official exe.
my pc only detects the device in hboot. The device will read usb hboot.
1 might fiddle around for 20 mins to see whats what.
.
If it was like a esmprimg.zip then it would seem more feasible.
goood luck hope you get your phone back up and running
well a week ago it finally booted. I felt that it was a fluke so I pressed the power button to reboot. I tried to turn it back on then it was stuck at the splash screen.
I am now starting to think it is a hardware problem. Either way the unrooted tmobile comet, yes it is small, is doing wonders. The battery life is way better then a iphone 3g.
Just remember guys, if you get an android phone, make sure it is a popular one. That way you are more likely to get support because of the bigger fan base. Oh well it was fun while it lasted. The only thing I hate is that i could have gotten an xbox 360 for the same price. oh well, thanks for the assistance. i will lets you know any further updates.

[Q] Bootloader issue

I have a serious issue with my DHD since yesterday. The battery was empty and when I got home I put in the charger. Instead of the normal continuous red glow it was a blinking one. I also couldn't start my DHD at all.
I left it for some time and eventually it started up. Unfortunately it kept in the bootloader and none of the options work. I removed the battery for some time and reinserted it. Then the phone "flashed" (yes, the flash on the backside flashed..) and I couldn't start it for some time.
Anyone familiar with this problem? I've googled it for some time but no one seems to have had the exact problem.
At the store they said it was possible it was waterdamage and suggested I looked for an answer here before attempting an expensive repair (no warranty thx to the rooting).
Can anyone help me?
Not quite sure what the problem could be but if you were going to send it back for warranty you might want to try restoring your device to stock using this guide here. I know it says for Australia Vodafone but I'm sure you can find your RUU and use that instead. Might save you quite a bit of money if you were to go with that option.
Hmm, thx for your reply.
I can borrow a DHD full battery from a friend. Hopefully I can connect it to the computer then and do it.
Right..
I am connected to the phone (it says FASTBOOT USB). However I am unable to use the RUU application. What else can I try?
I'm not too sure what your situation is but if you would like to explain a bit on the current status of your phone I'm sure it would help others and myself in helping you. Like is your phone able to go into the bootloader? Does it already have Radio S-OFF/ENG S-OFF? Does it have any Recovery image like ClockworkMod Recovery installed? Have you tried flashing another custom Rom? Which steps have you performed whilst following the restoring guide?

Bon, I am one step further.
I waited a couple of minutes and started by DHD in bootloader mode (this worked!). Then I rebooted from the bootloader.

It is working. Charging workes with the full battery.
Now I inserted my old battery and it is flashing red. I am going to wait a couple of minutes and try to start it again. Let's see what happens then.

Red flash normally if you press volume + up while booting

Good to know that it's working again! Could possibly be an issue with the battery rather than the phone itself, that would save you a lot of trouble I would imagine.
i have experienced that find an original ruu. new sense 3 would be the best. the zip versions are usable then flash through bootloader mail me for more information

[Q] How to unbrick my DHD?

Hi, I attempted to root my Desire HD yesterday, and it went horribly wrong.
I followed the instructions, and it was all going well, until the process effectively froze. From researching this, I found that where it would appear I had gone wrong was that my SD card was not mounted.
I attempted to restart my phone, but the buttons had no effect, so I removed the USb cable. This took to me to a screen on my phone where it showed some options, which I understand are normally navigated by the volume and power buttons but again, these did nothing. I couldn't turn my phone off, and I was unable to remove the battery, despite following online videos on how to do this... In the end, I left my DHD to run out off battery in the hope that maybe a simple restart would roll back the whole process. When it eventually ran out of battery, I briefly charged it (so as to be able to turn it back on). Whilst charging, the orange LED flashes, then stays on. I then pressed the power button. It now shows the simple "HTC" screen, until it runs out of battery, and again, the buttons have no effect. How do I return to the original state of the phone? There's no warranty on it or anything so I have no qualms about taking it apart if that is required.
Did the screen It took you in have green androids at the bottom thats called h -boot or was it in clockwork mod recovery
It had green androids at the bottom, with I think 3 of them at different angles
Hey dude.

No - I've found an image and put it on the mSD card, and it's recognised, but then it goes to the same old screen with all the options...
First of all, does your buttons (volumes and power) work fine in hboot screen?
What it your recovery? The DHD original one or CW re. or other custom re?
From above, if it is the original one, does your DHD unlocked?
The volume and power buttons work fine.
I don't know which PD98 I have, it's one I found online. I want to return back to my standard DHD, not root it.
Yes, it is unlocked.
May I know how you tried to root your phone? And the information in the hboot screen (which have 3 android with different angle) just after the line ***Unlocked*** It should be looks like S-ON / S-OFF
I used the following video: youtube.com/watch?v=zY8TFZ2Owk0
Although I read somewhere to put it in "charge-only" mode, which I reckon is where I went wrong.
There isn't a "unlocked" line as such (but it is unlocked as I did that myself using the codes etc online) but it's S-ON
Dude... it should be a unlocked line if you had unlocked the device... I am saying the HTC dev. unlock.
Had you ever tried to flash the clockwork recovery?
But what I guess is the boot.img broken or at lease sth wrong with it, may I know which step you had starting fail? You can point it with the uTube video(like the process goes well until 3:45 in the video)
---------- Post added at 02:09 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:58 AM ----------
You can try flashing the newest RUU to solve it (with all data safe). Depends on your luck.

Yeah it needs to be in charge only mode when you run the hack kit.
As a side note, they should really change (or add more information) to that video as it's not entirely accurate.... I have never had to rename a ROM 'update.zip' for it to work, and you definitely don't need to go into the bootloader each time to get to the recovery. And you need to do more than wipe the cache beforehand.
Hey mate,
Had a similar issue, couldn't use the volume buttons to navigate, however, i let it sit on that screen for about 1-2 minutes, then i was able to use the volume buttons. Not sure why, probably just took a really long time to load up.
Hi... Are you still here?

Hi, I have similar problem as baynesy with small differences.
I did root my Desire HD too, but in Ace advanced hack kit. I di mSD card as goldcard, next a put PD98IMG.zip (1.32.X) on sdcard. Then I started with root first three steps going well. After succesfully installing root, clockworkmod and first radio start next step flash new radio and here was the problem. Connection with PC fell and flashing was stoped. Now I have only black background without any mark of starting of device. Only orange LED flashes.
I tryed to remove battery and wait 10 minutes but without any succes.
Please can you help me with this problem?
