[Q] Is there a wireless hotspot hack for eco5? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just to make a short story shorter, I recently went back to eco5 because I found it to be the most stable. I used the wireless hotspot hack on eg22 and eh17. Just wondering if there is a hotspot hack for eco5 or anything that could be used to do what wireless hotspot does.
I do believe last time I was on ec05 I used barnacle wifi, which was as fast as dial up, so anything but barnacle please.

The hack allows you to use the built in "Sprint Hotspot" instead of having to use a beta version of the WifiTether app. It works great as well. The hack was made compatible, with some ROMs. Our devs and themers have been adding it as well

Once you use the hotspots hack nothing else will compare. The only problem I had with wifi tether is the phone would become very hot quicky.

Google "SRF1.2HotspotHack.zip XDA," works flawless with 4g. Install with CWM.

Lol does it ever get hot! When I use it I take my batt cover off, lay it screen down and aim a fan at it, seriously.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

What kernel are you running? I am on Rebirth w/Genocide kernel and I get about zero heat.

I'm using genocide, on sfr, and I get major heat too.
Also, there is a other wifi tether app on the market called Open Garden. I haven't been able to make much use of it, so I can't give you any recommendation on it, but it is there.
Sent from a secret underground bunker

Heat is always an issue with tethering. You are using the phone's 3G or 4G radio 100% of the time. This is why some tethering apps also display battery temperature.

I use open garden and it works great. It even allows my ipod to connect to my phone vs when I used the wifi tether that is included in most roms would not allow ipod to connect to phone.

What I do to eliminate the heat issue is to plug it into a wall charger or usb port and this will do 2 things 1, keep the battery from getting hot
2 keep the phone charged while your tethering, the last thing you want is to run out of battery after you've tethered god forbid you wanted to order a pizza and had no juice to make the call,, that's just scary.

Believe it or not I used to I use wireless hotspot hack for COD on ps3 with no heat problems, but trying to do YouTube or stream video is where I would have the heat issues .

Haha true, but most corporate pizza places let you order online nowadays

There is one available, QBKing77 has a "how to" as well on youtube which includes the link for the flashable zip. As for the heat, it is what it is, I use "System Panel App" as my task killer, which has system monitor so I can check batt temp, but there really isn't much you can do to prevent it, just keep a eye on it- good luck

I'm using the one for srf1.2...works great. Not sure if it'll work w/o the srf rom. There's not one listed for just ec05, but srf is based on ec05 (up to you if you wanna try it w/o it). I've used open garden, wireless tether...yada, yada, yada. This hack is the best by far, imo. Qbking77 has a "how to" on youtube with the links for the zip.

[Q] Can you tether a non activated phone to the Epic?

That's what I was thinking.
I don't mind getting the old phone wet if it so happens. I do however mind getting my badass Epic wet. I also haven't found an app that lets me do exactly what I want with the Epic. I have one on the BB that allows me to edit waypoints and then map them for future reference. Biggest issue is not wanting to use the touchscreen with wet hands.

There aren't any cables to support it, and there definitely isn't any software either.

Slow wifi tether

Any clue why my wireless tether only let's me have about 200k down? Tried it on several devices with the same result. Xoom, desktop, and laptop. Speed test on the phone shows pretty consistant 900kbps, I can understand some loss with overhead, but less than 1/4 the speed seems a little extreme.
I'm using the pre14? API...I think. It's been really slow since day 1, slower than my hero - but I just started testing speeds today.
I'm on ee03 if it matters.

Reverse Tethering for samsung epic?

Is there anyway for me to Reverse tether on my samsung epic?
I would like to plug my phone into my computer and use my computer's internet on my phone
I saw that the HTC thunderbolt had that option right when you plug it in and it was called "internet passthrough" where it uses ur PC's internet right on your phone.
Please let me know!

Wifi is not an option in my lab at work.
So it woudl be nice to be able to plug my phoen into my PC at work to get internet access on my phone that way.
I only get 1X in the lab as well...so tahts why i'd really like to get reverse tethering.
My coworker in the same lab uses his PC internet on his HTC thunderbolt.
When he plugs his phone into his PC he has additional option of "internet passthrough" which allows his phoen internet access through his computer

N can be either 2.4 or 5 ghz -- though the claimed "150 mbps" is usually around 75 mbps actual throughput.

USB 4G Tether

Wanted to share this with anyone who isn't aware. We can tether our ET4G on 4G but it requires USB and a 3rd party app. I tested it tonight with the free version of EasyTether and it works like a charm. Not personally interested in spending $10 for the full app but to some it may be worth it.
I haven't tested Klink but it's only $4 and it may work as well as a cheaper alternative.

Sweet, checking that out now. I see the free version doesn't allow https. I'll have to download the app to see how much the full version costs because I don't see it listed in the market.
To use these tethering method doesn't required the phone to be rooted, right? Also, will I be charged if I try to use it and can sprint figure out that I am tethering for free? I don't want to get a bill for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. How safe it is to tether undetected and are lots of people doing it for free with no penalty? I would like to tether for free but am just too afraid of getting caught and charged for it.
To be honest with you I used to have AT&T and now I have sprint and i've never once got a txt or anything in the mail telling me to stop. On AT&T I was running Cyanogen Mod and on my ET4G i'm running Calkulin's which has NoCIQ. If you aren't familiar with NoCIQ it basically makes it so sprint can't tell how your phone is using the data.
I wouldn't trust tethering if you're running a stock rom, even if the dev of the software says it's safe.

I think you might want to quantify your statement regarding NoCIQ. I've yet to see any published report from any reliable source showing it being used for data measurement. All a carrier has to do is look for unusual spikes in data volume.

I've had an android on sprint for almost 2 years now, always rooted, always tethering, always stock rom. Ciq still on there. They have never told me anything. And I always use 3rd party apps for tethering. I honestly don't think they know/care. At the end of the day, it works for the most of us, and we don't really abuse it; thus, they really shouldn't have a problem with it. They're bull**** hot spot app from sprint is ridiculously slow anyway. There's a huge difference in speed... its almost like they want us to find our own way of tethering lol.
That's my rationale and I'm sticking to it.
