I have recently asked a couple of questions on how to upgrade my ROM on my current O2 XDA. (I was trying to unlock it but could not use the unlock pgm because the ROM version was not current)
I have had a few excellent responses. But not being to computer literate, particularly on upgrading my ROM. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Does anyone know where to obtain a step by step guide to updating the ROM. Also I had asked about safeguarding my existing ROM until the upgrade was successful. Can someone help by answering the following?
I have downloaded the relevant versions of ROM to apply
1) How do I back up my current ROM so that I can re-apply in the event of a problem, i.e. is it possible to back it up to SD and also on my desktop?
2) Is it possible to copy the new ROM you wish to apply to SD/MMC card and then apply it?
3) What is the differences between radio versions I here so much spoke about it and don’t understand this?
Any responses would be very appreciated, hopefully I’ll get my answer in the one go or I can open the relevant thread. Thanks in advance and a merry xmas to you all.
Ok first thing you want to do is to read these three pages:
http://www.xda-developers.com/rom/
http://www.xda-developers.com/XDArit/
http://www.xda-developers.com/bootloader/
They should give you a reasonable understanding of whats involved to update your ROM.
1) The bootloader page covers backing up your current ROM
2) Yes you can copy it to SD/MMC (this is safer than using cradle anyway..) this is covered on XDArit page
3) Unless you are experiencing problems with your current radio stack most people will advise against upgrading it.. to upgrade your OS you only need the CE Rom. These can be made at Yorch's kitchen: http://kitchen.romanweb.com/kitchen/index.php then use XDArit/Osimage to copy it to your SD card.

I don´t know. Sorry
hey there guys, i haven't found an answer to my question yet so i thought i would just post my question here.
With the new over the air update for the evo, I've heard that it is a root killer...
now, being somewhat new to rooting, i was wondering if i could re-root my phone easily, (like would unrevoked 3work?) and will i loose all of my apps and data on my phone? I know you do when you flash, and i don't see how this is any different than that but i was j/w. thanks guys i appreciate any help, and sorry for my noobiness.
You can flash the root version of the update located in the dev section. No need to unroot.
thanks man, do you think you could link me?

3rd post. Answers your question and gives links to fully rooted 3.70.651.1 builds that are 100% unaltered.
As I am new in this waters maybe my Q is stupid for experienced members and I apologize in advance.
Found successfully the downgrade process and files for rooting my model but somehow i got used to sense atm and going trough rooting and restoring to factory ROM isn t exactly the dream work for noob in Android.
Is there a way to make a decent backup of the phone without perm root ?
Any other use of temp root?
Answers or simple redirections to other similar posts welcome and thank you.
Alex
bump
anyone ?
Anyhing changed in the meantime for 1.72? I also do not need root all the time, so temproot could be fine, but I see no solution so far.
Is it possible to keep phone officially updated and do temproot when needed?
First apologies if this is in the wrong area. Cant post in the android development thread.
I have a desire HD, which I have already updated the ROM, "Android revoultion HD 5.2.6" (Great work and thanks to all the devs for that). So in order for me to have done that I have basically rooted my phone etc and followed the instructions on how to go about installing roms. It was a while ago.
Q1.
What I cant understand is why is my phone not allowing me to update system files (trying to update gps.conf file)? It wont save the file, because its read only. Thus meaning I dont have S - Off. BUt I must have done that in order to have updated my rom in the first place right?. HOw did it go back to S Off (unless I did that specifically and forgot).
Q2.
Now I need to be S Off in order to edit this file, looking at the thread it said that I need to go back to an earlier version of the rom and radio (somethign I am reluctant to do, as it was pretty stressfull the first time round). If I already went through that process do i need to go back to an earlier version or can I just do the s -off http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
without going back to an earlier version of the radio and rom.
Again apologies if this has already been asked, stupid question or in the wrong place (probably all three).

hey dude, under my experience, for a beginner, Radio-off is more than enough, no need to be s-off( too risky). with radio-off you already are able to flash rom, change radion, edit system files.....the only thing different with s-off is that you can use fastboot but not for radio-off, however there are a few different ways around that let u do those same thing without using fastboot.
to edit your system file, download ROOT EXPLORER, and got the root, on the top, there is an option that u can change from read only to write
hope this will help

Hey guys!
Is it possible to wipe my Htc one m8 Completely firmware,Kernal, Etc.
because i've used the last 3 days on trying to fix my phone and there is always another problem after another..
when i install a Rom, Wifi wont work,
when i use a stock Nandroid backup it wont let me install OTA's with stock recovery.
so i thought the problem must be the kernel or firmware. but i cant find any methods to downgrade or upgrade those without S-off
Thanks in advance !

You are covering your issues there so add the new ones there too
Please avoid creating multiple related questions in the same forum. It makes answering them and keeping track of them rather difficult.
Suggest you consolidate your questions in your existing thread HERE
I will help by editing the Title of that thread.
