Just received my G2 from Tmobile yesterday, turned on the phone and there was a notifaction saying there is a new version that has Wifi calling and many more fixes. My question is that will I be albe to perm root my G2 now after I updated? Thank you
Yes you will be able to perm root w/o a problem. Go to the G2 android development sections and all your answers are already there
should i get the update from tmobile after getting root
i rooted first since it was easy and now i get a notification saying i got an update is it ok to update thanks in advance
You can root and go straight to a custom rom that takes those fixes and much much more. I recommend CM or Enom's for functionality or virtuous for aesthetics.

I received a new G2 last week, applied the OTA update for wifi calling, and then successfully perma-rooted using the wiki. Took about an hour to go from stock to CM 6.1.1 and overclocked to 1.51Ghz.

But assuming that's the original T-Mo OTA (and I've seen nothing to suggest there's a new one) then it's safe to install the OTA and simply re-root.
You are correct, of course, that folks should stay clear of future OTAs if they are rooted though, till they've been checked by the devs - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875099

Yeah, I think it just threw some people off with the idea of an ota on a new device. It's still the same ole 1st ota for the G2 unfortunately. Nothing to rip out or borrow...
weird that it didn't come with the ota already on the device but since android, ota's haven't been flashed on the device. nevermind, I thinking of the old wm devices... I'm a bit tired.
I still haven't received the OTA, and I'm not rooted or anything. Is anyone else not received it? Am I doing something wrong?

My only would download when I was on wifi, it stopped with I was in 3g.
Will this un-root me?
I'm coming from an EVO 4G to the Epic 4G Touch. I did the non-Odin root method, does anyone know if this OTA will un-root the Epic?

The update will fail if you're rooted. You have to be stock to update via OTA. Why not manual update + root?

Typically the OTA install fails on a rooted device. Undo root first if you want the update sprint's rolling out.

I used the zerg rush method that's been listed here to root my phone so I can use TitaniumBackup for my work apps (Good/RSA). I tried other ROMs/Kernels but I got horrible LOS unless I was on stock. I haven't tried since EK02 though but will soon.
I applied the patch with root and it applied successfully. I manually downloaded the leaked zip to my desktop, renamed to update.zip, placed on the root of my SDCARD, booted the phone in to download mode and applied the update.
Update applied without issue but my root WAS removed. I re-ran the auto root using that zerg rush method and my root was back. This was last week and so far no issues.
Pick a ROM...there's lots to choose from...Calk's, StrongSteve, Crawrj, Chris41g...(just to name a few) we've got a slew of brilliant dev's who have cooked up some great ones. Make sure you're on an EG30 modem first before a full EK02 update/flash though. Most of us flashed the EG31 when it leaked and were stuck for a bit.

got the update this morning
I got the update this morning, and for the record, I was and remained rooted before and after the update (sfhub ez-root)...Maybe it worked since my system was completely stock, only rooted.

That is correct, if you only ROOTED using the auto root sticky, that will not impede you from successfully installing the EK02 OTA update. If you also installed EG30+CWM, then all you would need to do is install EG30 before accepting the EK02 OTA update.
BTW after the OTA update installed, you would still have Superuser in your app drawer, but the functionality would have been disabled. To re-enable, just run the auto root and choose Option A.
Still haven't gotten the update...on complete stock with no root or anything and EG30
For some reason LoS has gotten really bad the past few days...I guess I only have to wait a few more though so it's not too bad

Still haven't gotten the update yet either in NYC. Leaving for Aruba tomorrow so hopefully it will be waiting for me when I get back next week
Received it this morning, so happy going to root now.

I got the update this morning (out of no where). Yesterday, I tried putting my phone on airplane mode, turn it off, then pull the battery - nothing. Tried putting phone on airplane mode, pull the battery, then turn airplane mode off - nothing. (This worked for somebody on some ET4G forum out there) Lol, I just think it's ironic!
Just be patient.
Anyone know of a way to disable the update notification?
I don't want it popping up every 10 minutes.

I woke up to the "your update is ready to install message" message. I'm rooted on blazer 1.2, if i want to stay where I'm at, can I just reboot to clear the update? I just don't feel like reinstalling apps and restoring sms.
So I'm rooted, running the Rogers kernel and the AT&T rom. I've removed the bloatware myself. Today I was notified of an AT&T update. My phone will download it, but it fails to install.
Anybody else experiencing this?

Probably failing a check sum. I'm avoiding updates in case they update something that prevents me from rooting.
I am rooted as well, and don't want the update.
Is there a way to disable the update checking?
I am getting this prompt also, and I wish to disable it (until I know what the update will do)
EDIT: For now I just leave my WiFi disabled (as it will only update over WiFi)
I still want to disable the checking though
i just got the update and it now says android 2.3.6

I know that before updates install they check can check your phone and if packages have been removed, like you did, it can block the update. You may have to restore the packages that you removed before it will install.
This is the first phone I have rooted. I would like to know what the update changes, specifically if it fixes the Android OS high battery usage. Also if the update causes you to lose root or can be rooted after.

Got the update, and it is stuck at 74%. Has been for about 20 minutes. I'm not rooted. Think I should wait or pull the batt?
I've got the update downloaded and I'm rooted. Haven't installed the update yet, because I'm wondering if this will unroot my phone and bring back our friends from Carrier IQ…
Looking at the 2.3.6 changelog for a Galaxy S2 their update actually removed CarrierIQ

Same here. Rooted with Rogers kernel, AT&T ROM. Still failed the update even with the default launcher, USB Debugging set to off, and default packages (bloatware) intact. Is there a method to "unrooting" and restoring the default unrooted kernel/ROM? Would someone have had to backed up or dumped their ROM first somehow? (ODIN?)

Same here. Boots into software update mode. Fails. Restarts.
Girlfriends phone tried to update, I turned off Wifi, then went to Running Services, stopped "Device Management" from running, installed Autostarts, disable Device Management from starting, turned on Wifi, hasn't seemed to come back as of yet.
Rooted AT&T rom FYI

Exact same problem on my wife's phone...she got the update today....she is NOT rooted, and also got stuck at 74% during the update. Not sure whether to pull the battery or just wait longer?
Well, since nobody has been answering my questions about this update I figured no one knows so I went ahead and installed it. I'll take my turn at Guinea pig.
I rooted the phone previously with the guide here: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/root-captivate-glide-rogers-and-att/ , not the one on XDA. I have also removed the tetheringmanager package.
The update installed fine and I still have root. Version says 2.3.6. Don't know what it did.
Lookout labs Carrier IQ detector says I do not have CIQ
I installed this update it
Did work, I still have root it also did remove carrier IQ as mentioned, it did not hang for me. I checked to see if carrier IQ was removed with titanium backup, Android is now 2.3.6, and kernel is now 2.6.36.3 not sure what it was
Before base band is now i927uckl1 not sure if that changed either.
Hope this was of help

I keep seeing that an ota came out, but I can't seem to get it, I keep checking update and firmware to no avail.
it's there an issue with my phone or does it take time for it to travel through the county?
I'm rooted with the original root method (the very first method) could this be hosting back my update? I haven't uninstalled or disabled any bloatware yet and I'm completely stock aside from the root

Same here completely stock and still nothing. Tomorrow will be day 4, so either tomorrow or the next day. I was waiting to get this and do a little more reading on rooting before I put on the jellybomb ROM most likely. Still learning about launchers and themes and such, along with the whole backup process
like you guys I waited and waited until I found a thread on how to manually update it so far its great.
If you are rooted, you cannot take the update. eventually it will prompt you to update, but you wont be able to. for now you will have to wait until they have a stock rom with the update, or unroot and take the update. IF you unroot you can manually take the update by following qbking77's instructions.
i followed the unroot galaxy s3 thread because i accidentally pressed update when OTA update popped up on my rooted phone.
downloaded the latest android zip and updated with ODIN.
but it doesnt show 4.2 it still shows 4.1.1 android.
im a bit confused.
theres just too much **** available and i lost track of all these build numbers and updates and different programs.
i dont spend much time here anymore after i got rid of the HD2 and now im completely lost.
got other stuff to do cant afford spending 3 hours a day to stay on top of latest repackaged rom release

4.1.1 UVDLJC is the latest official firmware.
oh ok then i thought it was 4.2 for some reason
one more question that i could not understand clearly
once i root the phone again. what specific services do i need to disable to prevent the automatic OTA updates?
i disabled one service related to update but didnt see any others.
and once rooted. do i have to unroot it in order to use odin and manually install OTA update that i downloaded?
im not planning to use custom roms( spent toomuch time making them wrk on HD2 and done with that for good)
jsut stock tmobile roms work fine for me.
thanks for quick reply i was about to try flashing again since i thought that it was supposed to be 4.2 version

You don't have to do anything with ota. When next one comes out you can unroot and install the ota as long as you hav stock recovery. If you have custom recivery you can always update with Samsung kies but you would need to reroot the new ROM. Or just flash a ROM through Odin.
