[Q] Few questions about flashing custom ROM.

Hi all,
Successfully rooted my Desire today using Unrevoked method.
Since I quite like the Sense UI, I've decided on flashing the "[FroYo Sense] LeeDrOiD V2.3b (17/12 l Official l OC&UV l FAST l STABLE l WWE)" ROM.
My phone software details are as mentioned in the signature.
a. Can I flash Leedroid without upgrading radio, etc?
b. How exactly do I format my SD card in ext3 partition? [Can't find a tutorial/thread to do the same.] --
Also, regarding using gparted in linux, do I directly, say use card reader/connect the phone and format? Since I have a 16GB SD card, I intend to have a 1 GB ext3 partition.
What exactly does "Flash Rom (you may need to toggle signature verifacation)" mean? :-o
and
"# Flash Radio (unless you already have it)"??

Radio is fine (don't flash any radio until you really know what you are doing), to toggle signature verification go, in recovery, to 'install zip form sd' there is the option to toggle verification.
How to partition your sd cared with gparted is mentioned enough, do some more searching. There are also some videos on youtube on how to do it. If you have the ability to use a cared reader use it.

Although, it is said that flashing the radios recommended by the dev would be better for battery life, but I guess it is quite open to interpretation.
You could also try using Rom Manager (by ClockworkMod) to partition your SD card through your phone. That's what I did. Less hassle (probably?) than using gparted or installing additional software on your PC.

ROM Manager (from the market) is your friend.....
Will allow you to partition an EXT3 (up to 512mb - Im still trying to figure out how to create a 1GB partition) and then will allow you to flash LeeDroid ROM.
ROM Manager is very simple to use. Just copy the ROM (zip) to a folder on your SD card, use ROM Manager to create your EXT3, do a NANDROID backup (!!!), and then flash the ROM.
Best bet is to backup your apps and data first (use Titanium ?).

To easily create your partition up to 1024 MB, you can use an Ubuntu live cd of GParted by either burning it to a cd or boot it from a usb stick: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download.
Or, you use it from within Ubuntu (vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVK-tJe8pXE&feature=related)
1) Connect your phone to your computer (or use an SD Card adapter...., in this case skip to 4)
2) Pull down the notification bar and mount the phone
3) Start Gparted
4) Gparted will search available drives. (Your phone should show up as a USB drive, and will be something like /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sdc1, etc..)
Warning: double-check you've not selected a hdd by mistake!
5) In the upper right corner, select the correct USB device for your phone. (i.e. check to make sure it is correct size for your SD card)
6) Right click on each partition and select 'unmount'
7) Right click on each partition and select 'delete'
If you know what you are doing, you can re-size the partitions and add a new 2nd partition formatted as ext2/3/4
8) Right click on the big gray bar (should say unallocated x.xx gb) and click 'new'
9) Enter configurations
Free Space preceding = 0
Create as = Primary
New size = [don't touch]
File system = fat32
Free Space Following = 512 (or whatever you want)
10) Click add
11) Right click on the big gray bar (should say unallocated x.xx gb) and click 'new'
12) Enter configurations
Free Space preceding = 0
Create as = Primary
New size = [don't touch]
File system = ext2/3/4 (recommend ext4)
Free Space Following = 0 (or ~32 if you want swap)
Click add
13) Click edit, then 'Apply All Operations' to write changes to disk
14) Quit GParted
15) Unmount your SD Card
16) Reboot your phone

It is very easy to follow the instructions posted above, I even linked a YouTube video for you and gave you a link on how to create the live cd. You should be fine, give it a go
You won't believe how easy it is... its just because you are unfamiliar with the OS platform.
If you are really struggling, then try this method but be careful as you will be connecting via USB to the PC and executing an automated script (batch file). While the batch file i running, do not disconnect the USB cable while in recovery mode:
1. Turn on your phone while holding the volume down button.
2. You will see HBOOT on the screen.
3. Use the volume buttons to move up and down and power button to select the RECOVERY option.
4. You will now see a red triangle on the screen, at this point plug your phone into your PC via your microUSB cable.
5. Wait for 10-15 seconds and then double click on recovery-windows.bat inside the pushfiles_windows.zip folder you unzipped as part of the root process. pushfiles_windows.zip
6. Using the optical trackpad select Partition sdcard > Partition SD
7. Select SWAP=0, EXT2=1024 and allow the rest to be FAT32.
8. Select the SD:ext2 to ext3 option in this menu.
9. Go back to the Recovery Console main menu and select Reboot system now. While rebooting, unplug the Desire from the USB port.

Thank you all! And MasDroid, thanks for the detailed instructions. I do have Ubuntu on my desktop. Tried formatting on a spare SD card using GParted and seems to be just the perfect thing. I'll do some more reading before flashing the phone. I do have some more doubts. Wanna make sure that I know what am doing.

Dont know, a friend of mine gave my arcronis, think it was the full version. G-parted did not find my cardreader. And the 512mb whit rom manager was not enough space for me. Sorry for my bad english...

c. Format the SD card with FAT32 and ext3 partition (A2SD+)
d. Copy the LeeDrOiD_V2.3b_A2SD ZIP folder to the SD card (root)
e. Insert the SD card to the phone and boot into recovery
Doubt here: Do I need to 'Wipe Data / Factory Reset' again??
f. Install zip from SD Card.
g. Choose zip from SD Card.
h. Reboot System Now.
Are these steps correct?
Also, after flashing how do I restore the Nandroid/Titanium backup? Do I have to copy the contents (step b) back to the phone and boot into recover and "restore" using Clockwork MOD??

Yes correct order.
Wipe again? In your list I can't find the first factory reset, but yes you should wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache (under advanced) at that point.
After flashing you can restore your apps with titanium, restoring the nandroid (in recovery) will revert your phone back to the state it was of the nandroid so leedroid will be gone. Personally i don't use titanium so can't tell you how to do that, but i sync my apps with appbrain and reinstall them again after flashing.
I do know that is you want to use titanium the backup needs to be copied back to the sd card.

Do I have to do a factory reset from recovery at first?

Not before the nandroid if you meant that, wipe before flashing leedroid. So once you're in recovery to flash the rom, first wipe data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache and then flash leedroid in the same session (without rebooting).
Best is to copy back the contend of the sd card, however if you want to start with a clean cart you can also just copy back the clockworkmod folder and the titanium folder.

So here's another of my doubt -- say, I copy the LeeDroid ROM to the SD and boot into recovery to flash the ROM and do a factory reset, would this not delete the ROM also from the SD card? My first ROM flashing and hence these doubts :-o

Sd card won't be affected by a factory reset nor by flashing.
You can copy the titanium folder whenever you want.

[GUIDE] [23 JAN] How to - For people who can't boot into ClockWork

Are you having trouble installing ClockWorkMod?
You click “BOOT AD SD” in MAGLDR and the screen flashes up with an error quickly and returns straight abck to MAGLDR main menu?
This guide is for you.
NOTE: I’m sure there are plenty of other methods which also work, but this method worked for me so I figured I’d see if I can help a few people out. Please don’t post if you are just going to have a whinge about your method being better than mine. I'm not interested in debates. I am however happy for people to post if they have a method that they have found successful. Once verified, I will update the OP.
Before we begin, I take no responsibility for any damage to your device or loss of important data.
Using this procedure will wipe your memory card so BACK UP your files first.
You will need:
• A Windows PC running XP or greater.
• A MicroSD reader (I have had issues with mounting my SD via the HD2 using MAGLDR, you might find it works fine for you, but I strongly recommend using an SD Card Reader.
• A copy of SD Formatter (free).
NOTE: If you have been using APPS2SD+, you are going to lose all your apps performing this procedure. I strongly suggest using a program like Android Commander to pull the APK files off your phone. You can then copy them back and re-install everything once Clockwork is working. ☺
OK HERE WE GO….
PHONE SHOULD NOT BE CONNECTED TO PC VIA USB UNTIL STEP 9.
1. Shut down your phone and take out the SD Card.
2. Insert the SD Card in to your card reader and plug it in to your computer.
3. Load “SD Formatter” and select your SD card from the “Device” drop down menu.
4. Click on the “Option” button and choose “Full Erase” and set “Format Size Adjustment” to “ON”. This will ensure that any previous partitions will be removed correctly. Click OK.
Don’t be alarmed, we will create a new EXT partition later on for APPS2SD+ ☺
5. Click “Format” and wait for your SD card to finish formatting. Time will vary depending on the size of your SD Card.
6. Now your SD card is formatted, copy the Clockwork “initrd.gz” and “zImage” files to the root of your SD card.
7. Copy the zip ROM of your choice to the SD card.
8. Put the SD card back in your phone and boot into MAGLDR by holding down the power button while powering on.
9. Flash the Clockwork Partition system to your phone in the usual NAND manner. When the phone reboots, disconnect it from the PC (unplug the USB cable and hold down the power button to boot back in to MAGLDR main menu. For more information on flashing NAND ROM's, BROWSE THESE GUIDES
10. Select “BOOT AD SD” from the menu. If you have followed this guide correctly, you should now be in ClockWork Recovery ☺
At this stage the process will vary depending on the style of ROM you wish to use. If you want to use a ROM which supports APPS2SD, you will need to create a new EXT partition on your SD card using the partitioning tool built in to ClockWork Recovery. If you do not wish to use APPS2SD, you can just go ahead and flash the ROM zip.
IF YOU WANT TO USE APPS2SD:
1. Use the Partitioning tool built in to ClockWork Recovery to create the partitions for you. Instructions for this can be found HERE.
2. Once partitioned, remove the SD card from your phone and insert it into your card reader. Copy back the “initrd.gz” and “zImage” files to the root of your SD card, along with the ZIP ROM you desire to use.

And for nand 1024 t-mous ??

Same method is mentioned in other tutorials so what's new in it?Most of the users are not been able to format as Full erase through SD card formatter so what would they do?I myself getting error of 123Fatal Hit n there the phone remains stuck.

As I stated in the OP, I'm just trying to help out. All the information is available elsewhere, this just provides an easy reference for people having problems.
If the Windows based formatting tools arent working for you, I'd suggest formatting to FAT32 in Gparted, then trying to format again with SD formatter.

I tried this, unfortunately, still it doesn't work.
I think the problem is with my 8GB class 4 (cheap, unknown brand) SD card. For some reason, MAGLDR (1.11) doesn't recognize it fully when I select USB MassStorage. I hear the "USB device connected"-sound, but no drive comes up in Windows Explorer.
I tried another card I have, a Kingston 16GB class 2 card, with that one, everything works fine.
The strange thing is that the 8GB card works fine under Android, never had any problems with it until trying to use it with MAGLDR.
Anyway, I will put this issue I have with my SD-card in the MAGLDR-thread.

None of theese guide helped me.... It is not just about formating SD and stuff ....
I had to flash old WM 6.5 ROM, than do all again, radio, MALGDR, format SD, ClockworkMod ... like u do for the 1st time when 1st NAND droid came out ... don't know if this help someone ... but helped me ... my SD is 8GB class 2 ...
when I copied some file/folder to SD I always used Card Reader ...

In my experience for best results at this stage (when the phone reboots from CWM installation and every time you wish to boot into CWM) the device should be disconnected from USB (my device specs in siggy). I posted my take on a tutorial HERE in the original [10 JAN][RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Recovery for HD2 - v1.2 thread.

To those having trouble follow this guide to the T it works! You may have to do it twice if your 4:20 friendly Hope everyone enjoys clockwork as much as I am!

For me, when I first got Magldr on the phone i tried messing around with the Boot AD SD option and tried changing the SD directory where Android boots from and that is what I think got Clockwork not to boot correctly for me. So instead of putting the two copy to sd files on the root of my sd card, I put in into a folder called nand and through the services menu in Magldr I added that as SD folder boot option for Clockwork Mod recovery and everything worked just fine.

Are there any guides for using clockwork once were have it running? Also the clockwork app are we able to use it with our HD2's cause its telling me it needs to install clockwork? I'm just wondering cause MDJ put it on 2.6

cwm works for me just fine to flash a ROM, but some of the other options concern me especially when try to use the backup and restore.... i always get an error ?/cache not found... I have set FAT32/ (EXT4/ EXT3/ Linux Swap all under 1028MB) Primary; GPARTED Live PROG

Just out of interest, did you try just reflashing MAGLDR before starting completely from scratch? I cant see how loading a WinMo6.5 ROM would make a difference as the partition table is erased by MAGLDR when a NANDROID ROM is flashed.

So instead of putting the two copy to sd files on the root of my sd card, I put in into a folder called nand and through the services menu in Magldr I added that as SD folder boot option for Clockwork Mod recovery and everything worked just fine.

I can't understand the part after making nand directory. What do you do in service menu?

2 questions or more lol... I'm a noob to all this but i am trying xD
1. is the shooter rom for evo 3d phones or normal evo phones or both...
2. is there a kernal for GB sense 3.0 that HDMwIn works on yet? all the forums i've read havent said there has been an update.
3. Should i download a different rom and download a new kernal? I have stock kernal. Any help I do appreciate

Shooter ROM is a port from the Evo 3D, built for the EVO 4G. If it is in the EVO 4G development section it is made for the Evo and wouldnt work on another phone because of framework issues.
HDMIwin currently doesnt work on Gingerbread Sense ROMs.
Either GoldenMonkey or Freedom kernel. I use Freedom kernel, as it is updated often and stable as anything.

I do not use the Shooter ROM, but Universal would most likely be it. I use Aggressive Freedom.
I am using my Sense setup, which is in my signature. r3chargeD is based on Mik3D, which is another port of the EVO 3D. Themed really nice, fast and a lot of free RAM.
Oh, and before you flash the ROM, partition your SD card if you havent before. What is the capacity of your card?

Modified Dredz's guide found here, (thanks Dredz!) but I HIGHLY recommend you follow my write-up below.
BACK UP EVERYTHING ON YOUR SD CARD TO YOUR COMPUTER AS PARTITIONING DELETES EVERYTHING ON THE SD CARD
Back up everything on your SD card to your computer.
Boot into AmonRa.
Select "Partition SD Card". You will be prompted to set an amount for Swap and ext2. The rest of the card will be FAT32, which is normal storage space for everything else.
Select 1536 megabytes for swap
Select 3072 megabytes for ext2
Should say something about the rest being for FAT32 or something along the lines of that, choose to continue.
After process finishes, select "Upgrade ext2 to ext3".
After process finishes, DO NOT CHOOSE TO UPGRADE TO ext4. Do NOT
Go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING there. Twice.
From main menu, select USB-MS and copy your files back to your SD card. You don't have to transfer files like android.secure and Android and temporary files, only what you need.
Do a fresh install of Shooter ROM or ROM of your choice.
Flash Freedom kernel, whichever you chose.
Reboot.
Initial boot will take a while. Let it be.
Once everything is booted up, do setup and reboot.
Download apps from the Market. I highly recommend a fresh install, not restoring from Titanium Backup or anything of the sort.

Partitioning will delete everything on the card. That is why I want you to back up everything on the card to your computer before you start anything. Flashing the ROM will not delete anything on your SD card. The only thing that will delete anything on your SD card will be partitioning. Just follow all of the steps exactly

You don't need it, because wiping everything twice in the wipe menu does that. Trust me, wiping everything twice in the recovery wipe menu will be plenty and it will not fail.

Just a reminder: whenever you are flashing a new ROM, wipe everything (cache, dalvik, data, system, rotate and battery stats, boot, sdext, android.secure, anything else I might have forgotten) twice except for SD card. You don't need to ever wipe the SD card itself, only the sdext

well everything was working fine, then i rebooted the phone again, and now it is stuck on the Evo splash screen, wont load after that!!! help >.<

i tried wiping/reflashing and everything, phone booted up fine, worked for a couple minutes, then once i rebooted, it froze up again. Not sure what to do now

[Q] Partitioning my sd card

Ok so i have an 8 gig memory card. And from what I understand, when you partition your SD card it deletes everything, upgrades your ext2 to ext3, and allows for more internal memory on the phone, and puts all of your apps on your SD card (if the rom you wanna use allows it).
But what are the swap values and such? I get confused at the part where it asks to set the values. If its any help I want to use either synergy or evolvedandroid running freedom kernel.

Set the swap to 0.

Back up the contents of your SD card to your computer or external drive because this procedure will erase EVERYTHING on it. Using amonRA v2.3, select 'partition sdcard'. When prompted, enter 0 for the SWAP size, 1024 for the ext2 size and the rest for FAT. When the process is complete, select 'upgrade ext2 to ext3'. After the process is complete, go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING on the list. Afterwards and while still in recovery, connect your device to your computer and then select the USB-MS option. This will allow your computer to see the SD card. Copy over a freshly downloaded copy of the rom you want to flash and then flash it. Be patient during the initial boot process. After you've booted to your homescreen, it is recommended that you install your apps from the market initially,especially if you're going to be using a rom like Synergy. Your apps should be stored on the ext3 partition upon installation.

Alrighty. Ill try it out. And when I flash a new rom, as long as it supports apps to SD, will all my apps with their data be re-uploaded onto the newly flashed rom?

Automatically? Maybe, but that depends on the rom and if you have your apps autosynced with Google's servers. I'll give you an example: When I flash an AOSP rom like SalvageMod (my favorite) or OMGB, my apps are autorestored but not to the ext3 partition, but when I reflash the Synergy rom, they do, but not all the time. What I suggest is you do the following: as soon as you have your device exactly how you want it, boot into recovery and create a nandroid backup consisting of your boot, data, system & sdext. When you're done, create another nandroid backup of only your data & sdext. The first backup is something you should do everytime you make significant changes to your device. The second backup is for restoring your data, homescreens and apps when you want to just reflash your current rom or flash a 'very similar' rom. NOTE: if you are NOT going to partition your card with an ext3 partition then substitute the sdext with android.secure when you create your nandroid backup. Android.secure is where your paid apps are stored.

[Q] Cant download apps on Revolution root

I just recently rooted my evo4g with revolution via Zedomax tutorial on youtube.
The root appeared to go smooth and easy up until i tried to download the app that allows me to wireless hotspot (the reason behind my root)
since the root, each time i try to download an app from the market (or connect to a wifi-network such as the one in my home) i get a download failed error message (as for the wifi, it just never connects to the network)
Someone please help me fix this or direct me towards the unroot process so i can try it again.

Turn off the phone, and then pull the battery. Put the battery back in. Hold the volume-down and power button.
This will take you to HBOOT. Top line, does it say S-Off? If it does, then continue with what I am saying. If says S-On, re-run Revolutionary.
Download AmonRa as a PC36IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card (meaning not in any folders or anything). Get into HBOOT again. It will check for certain files and find the PC36IMG.zip and ask if you want to update. Choose yes. It will ask if you want to reboot. Say yes. The phone will reboot. Delete AmonRa off of your SD card.
Get to HBOOT again. Navigate with the volume buttons to recovery. Power button to select. This will take you to recovery.
Make a nandroid (Backup, Nandroid Backup, choose everything except for cache).
Plug up the phone to your computer. Choose mount as MS. Back up everything you have on your phone to your computer.
I am assuming you are using the stock 8-gigabyte card.
Partitioning your SD card: (helps alleviate the phone, stores data on the sd card) (PARTITIONING WILL DELETE EVERYTHING OFF YOUR CARD SO BACK UP EVERYTHING TO YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE)
Back up everything on your SD card to your computer.

Select "Partition SD Card". You will be prompted to set an amount for Swap and ext2. The rest of the card will be FAT32, which is normal storage space for everything else.
Select 512 megabytes for swap
Select 1024 or 2048 for ext2 and the rest for FAT

After process finishes, DO NOT CHOOSE TO UPGRADE TO ext4. Do NOT do it. DO NOT DO IT
Go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING there. Three times.
From main menu, select USB-MS and copy your files back to your SD card. You don't have to transfer files like android.secure and Android and temporary files, only what you need.
Download a ROM of your choice, I suggest Team Nocturnal's Stock if you want stock. Found here
Transfer to your SD card while phone is mounted as MS.
Unmount phone from computer.
Choose "flash zip from SD card"
Navigate to ROM.
Select with power button. Let it run its course.
Reboot.
Initial boot will take a while. Let it be.
Once everything is booted up, do setup and reboot.
This is total overkill, but it will help hopefully. You only need to partition your SD card once so I am helping you do it the first time
Oh yeah, the Sprint Hotspot in most ROMs (including Team Nocturnal's stock) are hacked, meaning that you can tether for free with the app without the need for a 3rd-party one. It is restricted to 3G-only though
