Active Task Manager - is there one like the Samsung TM? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just got my Xperia Arc and am about to give my Galaxy S to my wife. The one thing I can't find on the Arc is a task manager like I have on my Galaxy S. I've downloaded an app called Android Task Manager but it, and lots others I have seen in the android market, don't have a simple place to see all running apps and have one button to close them all down. I used to be able to go into this, see that Facebook and Internet were running, and with the one press of the button I could stop them.
The Task Manager I have downloaded seems to list not only apps I have opened but a bunch of stuff I'm not sure if I should if I should be closing down or not. Even if I was sure, I have to tick any I want to close and then press a close button. It all seems more more complicated than on my Galaxy S.
Any help on how I can close my running apps like I used to be able to do on Galaxy S would be very much appreciated.
thanks
Steve

I use this - https://market.android.com/details?id=com.rhythm.hexise.task&feature=search_result
It's really simple.. and really good.

switched from Iphone 4 to galaxy s 3 and love it

Hey all,
I switched from Iphone 4 to galaxy s 3 and love it. I want to know if there's a way to delete apps that came with the phone ( all the ATT apps)?
also I have the Samsung SGH-I747, what's the difference from the I9300? I see that everywhere when I google samsung galaxy S 3 4.1.1 update? will that work with my phone?
I tried to root my device but it was giving me errors so I unrooted.
I'll definitely try that again soon.
What are good sites for info and "hacks" for this awesome phone?!
Any good App recommendations?
So far I'm impressed with the phone and love it!!!

Nice move! To remove apps, root the phone and you'll have that power. BUT.... this is the Sprint SPH-L710 forum, not the AT&T. Do not flash anything from here, go to the AT&T thread and read up on what is working over there.
Sorry, Should I move this thread? or will the Mod do it?

And to further answer your question no don't flash anything for the i9300 - that's the international version and doing so will brick your phone.

I switched my iPHONE 4 to the GS3 too!!!! Message me if you figured out to do anything u asked. I'm still trying to learn as well.
I love reading topics like this. Welcome to Android world. Where YOU own your phone! Good luck and remember.. READ! READ! READ!!! Its easy to brick your phone in the beggining. Even I did myself too.. twice! Poor Epic 4g lol

I too made the switch a couple of months ago. I've since rooted and installed CM10 nightlies and I'm loving it! This phone is such a refreshing change from the iPhone and I'm learning something new all the time.
If I can give some advice. You have a lot more power over the S3 than you did with the iPhone, even with Jailbreaking. Because of this you can really screw the device up if you don't do something correctly, just be sure to read and read and keep reading. Ask questions and then when your sure, read a bit more then take the plunge. Once you get a grasp of things the mystery goes away and it's no big deal but until you've rooted and installed a recovery, then ROM'ed your phone it will seem crazy.
Enjoy it.
Root your phone. Follow Mr Robinson's post under stickies. Then download titanium backup. You should have everything you need there.

i9300 = international version (quad core, 1gb ram)
i747 = att version (dual core, 2gb ram)
my favoruite apps are flipboard (pre-installed), jetpack joyride, granny smith, subway surf, and nova launcher atm. if you're a redditor, reddit sync is great as well.
for info and hacks, xda is the best.

Welcome to the flash crazy work of Android :silly:
The i9300 is the international version, and the i747 is the AT&T version. You want to make sure you DO NOT cross flash anything from the i9300 onto the i747 and vise versa, you will brick, and brick badly.
For Rooting I wrote this up a while back and should be useful:
Recovery mode:
Hold down Volume Up, Home and then the Power button
Download Mode:
Hold down Volume Down, Home and then power until “Warning!!” message is displayed
Press Volume Up to continue.
Navigating Clockwork Mod Recovery:
Use the Volume Up and Down arrow keys to change the highlighted option and the home key to select an option. The Back soft key works, but will not be lit and will take you back one screen.
1. Make sure all Samsung Drivers are installed.
2. Copy CMW_SuperUser_v3.07.zip to your internal SD
3. Reboot your phone into download mode
4. Go into the folder you extracted Odin3 into and run Odin3 v3.04.exe
5. Connect your phone to your computer via USB
6. Click on PDA and in the Open window that pops up navigate to clockworkmod.tar
- Verify that ONLY Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked
7. Click Start.
8. Power off your device and boot into Recovery mode
-To boot into Recovery mode: Hold down Volume Up, Home and then the Power button until you are in Recovery (it should say CWM-based Recovery at the top of the screen)
9. Install CMW_SuperUser_v3.07.zip
10. Reboot
11. Install BusyBox from Google Play Market, grant it SuperUser permissions and it'll walk through the rest.
12. Update Binaries.
- Open the SuperUser app
- Get into settings (the wrench icon in the upper right of the screen)
- Select Su binary under the General section towards the bottom of the list
- Select Update
To remove the bloatware from AT&T, you will need to root, and there are 3 ways that I use to remove that stuff. 1 is to buy Titanium Backup, and "freeze" the apps you don't want to use. They are still installed, but are not visible.
2nd way is to use Titanium Backup, and Backup and/or uninstall the apps. The 3rd way is to get a root explorer application(there are a few good free ones) and go to system/apps, and manually delete them yourself. The easiest way would be to freeze them in TiBu, and the safest. If you mess something up, you can always go back and Un-freeze the app
This SHOULD get you going
Hey! Welcome to the wonderful world of android. You are in for a lot of treats as I'm sure you've seen already. To answer your question about removing the. "bloatware" as we call it, there is one other way other than rooting you can get it off your app drawer and make it easier to ignore. Find the app you want to get rid of. Then press and hold on it until the home screens come up. Drag the icon down to the "app info" icon and drop it there. This will load up the info screen. From here, select the "disable" button and it will be removed from your app drawer. This is an easier way than rooting and it won't void your warranty either! Hope that helps.
Also, check out the amazon app store. It is pretty awesome. Free app every day. You can also customise your phone using zedge.

NVM I figured it out
I made the same switch
I am going on about 2 weeks now with the GS3. It is a big learning curve so far. As the stock GS3 with touchwiz I am not a fan. I do not like what samsung did to android at all. In particular all of the motion stuff is really stupid and the samsung messaging app is just terrible. I also don't like their default keyboard.
However I rooted it and installed CM10 and I really like that. I am a little torn as I dont know if I should judge this phone based on how it is in stock mode or for everything I can do with it (rooting, roms, etc....). Coming from the iphone I do miss the stability and ease of use. But I do like the bigger screen the LTE and being able to customize more, like what apps open with what actions and what not. All of the sharing options are nice too.
I would say if I was stuck with touchwiz I would probably return the phone and go with another iphone, but being able to use CM10 makes all the difference. I like both OS's and think each has their positives and drawbacks.
I am not trying to start a flame war just giving my opinion after a couple weeks of making the switch.
That's the beauty of android...you don't have to stick with the manufacturers skin.

Agree, but I wish it wasn't required to enjoy the phone. sometimes you want something to just work. plus most of the ROM's have at least some issues that wouldnt be found in a release by a major company. Though touch wiz was just as buggy.

I made the jump from iPhone less than a month ago and have already tried atleast 7 diffrent roms...
Stock rom worked just fine for me all the time and I do find the motions useful...just disable them if you dont like them... I think like you that both have their pros and cons...but im finding much more pros for the Android than iOS...
Maybe there was something wrong with your phone from the get go...just saying consider taking it back to the store for a new one...cause I never had any bugs in touchwiz when I was running the stock rom...
Not trying to be rude, just giving my opinion...

I came from an iPhone 4 to a Galaxy SII (I777) last year, and now I just got the S3. I understand where your coming from where you like the ease of use of iOS and the stability, but to be honest I wasn't having any trouble or stability issues on the either of my phones with the stock ROM on Touchwiz. With that being said I still flashed a lot of other ROMs because I love tinkering and trying new stuff, I decided to stick with AOKP which is a CM10 AOSP based ROM and I couldn't be happier. I do miss some of the neat features with touchwiz though, like Smartstay and Direct-call.

Questions about s3 running CM10

I am new to the whole flashing roms thing but managed to get cm10 on my phone. I have a few questions and also would like to know if there is a better rom. First question is why when I hold the home button there is no task manager just where I can switch to different apps? Second are these apps all running and draining my battery? Third is there a rom with a better camera app? I really liked the stock camera app that came with the phone but I know I can't get that? Another question is why can't I set the double home tap in cm10? I'd like that for voice search if there's a way. Last question I have is, is there a rom that is like the stock one that came with my phone but runs jelly bean? I know touchwiz has a lot of bloadware but I liked the overall options it had (camera app, task manager built into app switcher, etc). Thanks for all the help and sorry if I've posted in the wrong place I'm just looking for help.

1) The task manager is part of TouchWiz (samsung twist on Android) and not part of the original android os. As far as I can tell, cyanogenmod tries to get close to clean android as possible.
2) When you hold the home button and see a list of apps, like ios, those are list of recently opened apps. They may or may not be running. In most cases its best to just leave it. Task managers, clearing ram, etc all of those don't really work. You can read/search why it doesn't. In short, you kill it, you either need to load it, or it loads by it self again (services)
3) Try looking for a better replacement for camera in the play store? Not really sure what you mean by better.
4) that's one thing I don't like about android; it doesn't have the ios activator identical. You can hold the menu button and it opens search. You can set another action with the menu button in CM10 by going to settings>system>hardware keys
5) I have personally tried a note ii and Galaxy S3 sprint port by the same dev. I'm on mobile so I won't be able to link you. Search for it
Best of luck

Nooby to nooby lol...I was just going to try that cm10 rom but seeing what you wrote not sure I want too at this time but I think the current Rom I am using may be something you will like an enjoy..it's pretty much how the phone was stock.
All the options you asked about are still there, it's is just a bit more cleaned up and seems to run faster over stock, as of now I don't see any issues yet.
The link for the rom is below, make sure you back up and follow the op installation instruction, as this stuff is very confusing lol
Hope this helps

[Q] Xperia ZL post-mortem

I have a couple of quick questions about the xperia UI.
Recently, my ZL died in an accident. Due to my location, I had few replacement choices available, so I opted for a Galaxy S4. It wasn't my first choice, but it's not a bad phone.
There are a few things I miss.
First, what is that thing circled in red on the first picture called? It's a launcher of small apps that appears on the bottom panel when you open Recent Apps. Samsung doesn't have it, so I'm assuming it's an Xperia thing. I want to search for an app or a mod that can perform a similar function, but I don't know what it's called, or if there's an app that does it.
Secondly, I was really getting to like the Xperia's "Album" software. I've found gallery apps that organize in a similar way, but don't include a home screen widget that allows the user to flip through photos. Can this "Album" app be installed on the S4, if so,how, and if not, can anyone recommend a good replacement?
I don't think thats possible on a sammy phone... not unless you port the stock xperia rom to the S4... But you should head over to the s4 forum and maybe ask someone to port it for you.... only the small apps if possible! Also Samsung has their multiwindow and all... maybe use that!
You could also root your phone and use floating window from xposed!

Well, my sister have a s4, and somehow i didn't like it...
And samsung doesn't have a small apps, and also , you can tweak your Xperia ZL using Xposed Modules (Need root but not custom rom)...
Like mine, you can customize the status bar icon, battery icon, nav bar, screen off animation, and many more!
Feel free to ask, bbm or pm me if you have a question

You can tweek any phone with Xposed, but why are you telling him that? didn't you read his post? He states that his ZL died and the S4 is a replacement, he's asking if it's possible to make his S4 to be closer to the ZL.
Now to the topic at hand, from what I heard it's a popular practice to port Sony apps to all Xperia phones as well as other phones. So if you go to the S4 forums you should be able to find the small apps as well as the album app, along with instructions on how to install them correctly. Good luck man, and don't be sad, the S4 is a bit better than the ZL anyway.

I found a bundle of Xperia apps and flashed them, and I discovered the apps couldn't start without Xperia Home enabled and running. Needless to say, it didn't run well competing with Samsung's Touchwiz. Touchwiz can't be stopped or shut down. Most of the Xperia stuff didn't last a reboot. I couldn't get Walkman to run at all.
S4 may be a slightly better platform. It's got a better camera, for one. However, the better user experience goes to Xperia. Walkman's a better music app in every way that's important. Small apps are useful, especially screenshot for me. Album widget is irreplaceable. Now I've got 2 competing music apps, Adapt sound which breaks everything, 2 competing alarm clocks, and of course the one I don't want is the one I can't stop...
It was easy to root, though, to its credit.
Might just get a Z2 and give this one to my wife. Are those easy to root? Z2's, I mean?

Oh, that's a shame and kinda weird. I mean porting should imply that they have been modified to actually run on the device.
The Z2 is easy to root with towelroot or the Z2 root deamon we also used to root our ZL. Then again, everything is easy to root with towelroot.
The best music app is PowerAmp, Walkman kinda sucks when compared to that.
Here are the S4 forums, pick which model you have and see if they have properly ported Xperia apps.

Task manager?

Hello everyone. I have had many an android device running many different versions of the os. The one thing my kfhdx is lacking most is a reliable task manager. The included one does not even let you switch between amazon purchased apps, let alone actually kill all your apps (including sideloaded) . I hoped the kit Kat update would solve that, but no.
So, does anyone have any suggestions of a better implementation of an app switcher/killer? I am sangria right now, so root is not really an option.
~Leko
By the way, I figured out why some apps show in the native task switcher. Apps only show in it if launched from the stock home screen.
If anyone is interested, 4.2.x fixed this bug. Now, they all show up in the default task switcher.
I am using Sidebar Pro https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mohammad.adib.sidebar for switching recent tasks. Works fairly well. It also has the ability to kill running processes. :good:
