[Q] Does Rooting Give Tethering? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey there, I'm not new to the Android/Dev community, but I AM new to Sprint. When I was on T-Mobile I could tether my phone to use it as a modem for my laptop even without root. When a stable root is obtained for the Epic 4G Touch will I have to wait for ROM development to get free tethering or will rooting it alone give me tethering? Tethering is something I really like and don't want to pay extra for. Thanks!

With root you can download an apk that will let you tether. As of right now we don't have a custom rom with built in tether that doesn't go through sprint. I use Wi-Fi tether for a mobile hotspot or the og pdanet for USB tether. All free of charge

Thanks. I'll just stick with PDA Net until a stable root comes along.

[Q] After root will the hotspot still work?

I am with Sprint and just wanted to see if I root my device will I still be able to use the hotspot feature?
Thanks,
Adam
Based on your question, I suspect that you are paying for the official Sprint hotspot service. After rooting, you can use the tethering capability built into 2.2 WITHOUT having to pay Sprint $30 per month for the privilege. If you choose to run a 2.1 ROM, you can use Google's Wireless Tether app and accomplish the same thing, again without paying Sprint a single penny.
For the Sprint Hotspot functionality, you will need to be sure to find a ROM that has that apk installed. Quite a few of the custom ROMs remove this because it is obsolete in comparison to the wifi tether application from google.

I thought he meant you could use sprint's wifi hotspot app if you have a rooted 2.2 rom. I already use the wifi tether app.

Wifi Tether for Root Users on JB not working. (Toro+)

Like the title says. I have the Sprint GNex and have flashed the RC1 Toro+ Rom. Everything else seems to be working, but I haven't been able to get my wifi hotspot or the wifi tether for root users to work since JB. I thought I saw someone had it working and am wondering if I'm just doing something wrong. Anyone else got it working on the Sprint GNex? I need my wifi tether but I want to stay on JB..it is the best OS of all time.....but seriously.

[Q] Tethering apps?

Do Foxfi and Wifi Tether apps support JB yet? I have had no sucess getting them to work yet, so I was hoping that was the case rather than a problem with my phone.
Thanks for your help.
I'm curious, why do you even need an app to do tethering? It's built right into the OS.

Figured it out. Please excuse noobness.
He needs an app like "tether for root users" because the in OS tether charges money for tethering whereas root apps that allow WiFi tether don't incur any charges.

[Q] WIreless Tethering

Hi
What is the fastest way to enable free wireless tethering on a stock sprint HTC evo 4g.
It is my father inlaws phone, I don't want to do anything major like install a custom rom if possible.
Thanks so much for the responses.
Just search "no root Wi-Fi tether" on the market. Try the first one that pops up called one click tether or something like that.

You are going to have unlock it and then you can leave the stock rom on it but you need to look for a hack wifi hotspots zip file and then he can keep the stock rom and have hotspots for free

If for some reason rooting is not an option for you and finding a wireless wifi is not working because you're not rooted... Then resort to plan B and go USB tether with PDAnet
With the new wifi tether beta version, what settings do you use to make it work properly? I am getting an error?
