[Q] Can paid apps be re-downloaded after formatting phone? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am contemplating formatting my phone due to an excess of data that I do not require. I would like to start afresh and choose the apps that I absolutely require.
I am however worried about the apps I have bought from the Android market. The format process will delete them from the phone. So will I be eligible to re-download the app without having to pay again?

Yes.......

Yes, they are not bound to your phone but your account. If you own more Android units you can install your apps on each unit legaly.

Or he could use titanium backup to save them and restore =)
ED: If its rooted.. that is..

Any way to back up all of my apps before rooting for the first time??

Hey guys,
I have already rooted my friends phone with the 1.47.651.1 ota update and everything went fine.
My only problem is I have a lot of apps I don't want to loose, paid ones as well. Is there anyway to back these all up?
Obviously I have no problem getting the free ones back but if I had to delete the paid one is it possible to get it back without paying again?
Don't quote me on this, but i believe i have read in a few places around the forums that say you can redownload paid apps without paying again.
Did you just get the phone / have to run any of the OTA updates? It might be possible that the original unrevoked method can let you use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps, then you can run a root + nand unlocker & just restore your apps.
correct, paid apps are tied to your gmail account, so as long as you use that gmail account then you can re download any app you paid for.
I agree with Veritas - Titanium Backup will be your best friend if you plan to root, flash ROMs and so forth.
I've been using Titanium Backup since I got my EVO and I love it. Very easy to backup all user apps/data to the SD card. Once a new ROM is flashed, install Titanium Backup (your license key is located on your SD card, so as long as you dont format that, you should be fine. You can copy that file to your PC as well for a backup). Once the new ROM is up and running, simply do a Titanium restore of all user apps/data. If it werent for Titanium Backup, I would not be flashing custom ROMs as often as I do.
This takes a while but you can backup apps with most of the file managers on the market without root access. All it backs up is the apk though. Just use it for the free ones. After you root then titanium backup is your best friend

[Q] Less destructive root suggestion?

I'm looking through the guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496) on how to root 2.2 on the EVO. I don't own an EVO but I've read enough root guides (and rooted 2 other Androids) that a thought comes to mind.
I see that the procedure erases all data. I'm thinking there must be a less destructive way to do it. I see there is a stage where you are asked to push some files, launch an exploit and toggle airplane mode. Then you open a shell and you're suddenly at a root shell.
Okay - *pause*.
You have a root shell... is there anything you can do at this stage to back up system and app data? For example could Titanium Backup be made to work under the right conditions? If so this info would be useful to all the folks who would rather not erase their phones =)
Any type of root method is going to wipe all your data. I would just use MyBackup before. I'm pretty sure it doesn't require root.

Okay, but what I'm saying is, the instructions suggest *you get a root shell* before the stage where you have to wipe data. That means a potential opportunity to get in there and back up the app data before erasing anything. Does that make some sense?
an extra reason for the wipe is so you have no left over data that will cause problems
i get tired of wiping when flashing roms i cant wait to cm6 final is out
but there are no other methods rite now for 2.2
that method was just released and all he developers that helped on that worked long and hard so if you want root on 2.2 just wipe and start over with wat ever games or apps so theres no problem in the future
Yah should work fine I would think. At that point any non destructive method would work. At the very least you could throw a file someplace with 4777 permissions would allow you to so whatever with it.

What is the big deal with wiping data? It takes maybe 5 minutes to re-set up settings and what not. You can put apps on the SD card, or synch with App Brain to take care of the app issue. And, all of your contacts are stored on Google servers. Am I missing the big downside to wiping data other than the few minutes it takes to re-download or re-set settings?

True, system settings don't take a lot of effort to restore, and you can back up the list of apps. But *app data* is not possible to back up without root on Android. If you have 50+ apps that you've each customized to your needs, it's really helpful to be able to back up that data and restore it later.

[Q] Backup application data

Anyone know of an application that can backup application data together with market links? (for non-rooted phones)
I know TB can do that and I already use that, but now my worry comes in when SE is releasing an update this week and we aren't sure whether we are able to root after this!
I was thinking the same.. I've backed up using mybackup pro.. backs up app and data.. not sure about market links though, but it's the best non rooted back up I've found..

Thanks for the reply.
I've used Mybackup Pro before with my X10, but I it couldn't backup the data unless you provide the "root" access to it and the restoration isn't as good as TB when it comes to rooted phone.
The biggest question here is that when the update is delivered, will we be able to root again using the Gingerbreak? If yes, then I've no problem sticking with TB, but if not then my worries start
I for one am not going to update until i know the new version can be rooted.
Other than that, i can second the recommendation to use mybackup pro. It's not a titanium replacement by any means, but it gets the essentials (sms, calendar, etc etc) done perfectly well (in fact i use it for this sort of thing in preference to TB anyway).

Yep. Agreed.
But here I'm looking at something which can backup the data of the application as well without a rooted phone and restore it in a non-rooted phone.
Any suggestion?
sounds like this needs root to work then..

Disappointed.
Most of the phones out there (Android excluded) can do this. The best example is iPhone; thought I don't like it, I like this feature. That's the whole idea for us to connect to the PC every now and then. I don't know how hard it is for the phone makers to come up with something like this to backup the whole phone, including apps and their data; while they have access to everything since they are the manufacture of the phone.
Every now and then, surely there will be software updates and they will wipe the data. We have to setup it up from scratch and it takes a long time for that and more or less you will loss the application's data; unless you are rooted and use TB to backup; provided the "root" is still available for that software update.
Previously I tried a simple application for backing up the data of the famous game "Angry Birds". This app requires no "root", but does the job pretty well. Now when a third party application can do that means surely the phone maker should be able to do more than that!!
sprite backup is what i used before titanium backup. no need for root, but it stores everything in batch backups...

Does that application have a option to backup application (from market) together with it's data? Am I able to choose which application to backup/restore? Classic example is backup "Angry Birds" with it's completed levels and it's settings.
After the update my phone has become quite slow and freezes at times for 1-2 seconds. I would like to do a factory reset to see whether it can solve the problem but only thing stopping me from doing that is I couldn't find a software (be it a PC based software or and Phone application) that could backup my phone's application together with their data!
Any more advises or help?

Kies Restoring App Data (Game saves)

Discovered some dead pixel on my screen. Since i'm still unrooted (yeah knox is a pain in the ass) i used Kies 3 to backup my data and go for a replacement. I tried to restore everything from kies then.
So for my surprise Kies simply re installed my apps without data. Twitter, Netflix and every app that needs login information asked me for my credentials. But the worst was that all my games, some Saves with 15 plus hours, i must start from scratch.
I tried to restore a second time without success. Am i doing something wrong? Or this is it? Kies cant backup the data/cache/savegames whatever from the apps? If this is the case, kies is useless.
I've actually been wondering the same thing, been looking for a decent non root backup system, that can take backups of app data (saves, login info, accounts etc)
Anyone?
Looking for an app for this also

Use helium. No root required but requires you connect to pc via USB to enable it on the device. I restored my game and app data with it. Although some apps I noticed still doesn't restore data but it's like only 2 to 3 apps out of my 50 so apps.

[Q] Titanium backup question

I just wanted to get people's opinion on whether backing up with Titanium for apps could be redundant if you already backup to your Google account?
The last time I updated my ROM with a full system wipe and re-booted, all the previously installed apps came right back as soon as I connected to wifi and logged into Google. The Titanium backup file is very large on my KF and I would rather use the space for other things..
I realize that TB is necessary for system data, but do you think I need to continuously back up my apps in both places?
Thanks for your input..
I think that if you want an identical restore, then TB is the route. With Google, I still must setup my screens.
