Possible with 2.3.4?

Only way for 2.3.3+ is to unlock the bootloader, however then you won't be able to update and have to resort to flashing new kernels in like the Doom Kernel.
There are loads of info around at the forum. Check the Development section for the XPlay!

I was on 2.3.3 I rooted with a pre-rooted ROM, I then wanted the new update with the Xloud and new home screen (still no new market though :/) and to do so, I flashed a ROM of the new update, and then installed Doom kernel, If you want to unlock your bootloader I reccomend this method. You can always relock bootloader after and have you're warranty? (in theory)

Using the official bootloader unlocking method will wipe your phone. I think using Alejandrissimo bootloader unlock method will not wipe your phone (not 100% sure tho better asking him) its not free aswell (for Alejandrissimo's method).
Other than that the only way to keep root on anything 2.3.2+ (with a locked bootloader) is to update using ota. So you will have to downgrade to 2.3.2 > root > then ota update. But downgrading to 2.3.2 will wipe your phone.
When flashing you can untick the "wipe user data" box and your apps will remian but your phone will FC on mostly everything. Its possible tho to root then make backups of the apps and data (on 2.3.2) then reflash (to wipe your phone clean) > root > ota and finally reinstall your apps and their data once on the latest fw rooted. There is always a risk tho that not everything will be restored fully so its up to you. See this thread since Fokezy had some success with the above method
I would ask Alejandrissimo first and if you dont keep your apps after unlocking you will have to do as i have described above to keep your apps on the latest fw.

[Q] 2.3.4 update: keep root?

The option to update my phone just popped up on my Arc (with Rogers.)
Any body know if it will keep my root, like the previous update, or will I have to reroot afterwards?
I am aware that there is a forum for QnA, but I imagine that this thread will be a common occurance in the upcomming days, and it may be beneficial to have
one that will hopefully be answered here for a few days while people get their udpate notifications.
I also should have named the thread "2.3.4 OTA Update: Keep root?"...

You had right now 2.3.3??

Yes, I currently have stock Rogers 2.3.3 rooted, and just got the notification that OTA update is available.
I also have a bunch of bloatware frozen with titanium backup. Should I unfreeze it before updating?
I need to keep root and want to avoid flashing if at all possible, so if OTA doesn't work I'll just live with 2.3.3 until I have the time to deal with flashing.
Last time my contact book was completely messed up by the backup and restore.

Download latest 2.3.4 and update via flashtool. How about root i dont know. I have bootloader relocked and then root is always.

So I would need to update with a separate tool?
I'm sorry but your english is a little hard to understand and I want to be sure about this before I do it.

Flashtool is good. If you uncheck "wipe data" than you data will be keept. When you do OTA(overtheair) update then i dont know about root. Problably you lose it. And i think over wire update is best option.
And via flahtool you keep Root.

Alright, I'll just be patient and wait for someone who has tried it.
2.3.2 root -> OTA update -> 2.3.3 did not remove root
It would be great if I could keep it that simple again.
Thanks for your help though, I'll do what you suggested if OTA doesn't work.
Look neo forum and ther is thread about updating 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 via flashtool without losing root.
Regards!

I don't want to use flashtool though,
I just want to know if I will lose root from an OTA update,
as the last OTA update did not remove it.
You wont lose root if you do an ota update

I decided to try doing the OTA update, and now I'm suddenly "up-to-date" but I only have 2.3.3.
Did they remove update, or would there be a reason I suddenly can't get the update?

No problem at all with rooted arc to update by OTA... ;-) Just relock your bootloader (otherwise you brick your phone when you use the official OTA :-S)
After you updated, you stil have complete root access..! ;-)

Awesome, now I just have to figure out why the update has disappeared.
And I don't believe I unlocked bootloader, is there any way to confirm?
My phone has gone 2.3.2 -> 2.3.3 OTA -> flash 2.3.2 -> root -> 2.3.3 OTA

2.3.3 Root - Locked Bootloader?

Is there any possible way at this moment in time to ROOT 2.3.3 with a Locked Bootloader?
Thanks.
Dean
bump......
Search in the forums there are several answers.
You have to downgrade to 2.3.2 root and then upgrade via Ota ( but only this way) and you will keep root this is the only way

You posted this in the wrong section, and had you looked in Q&A you probably would have seen the answer.

I did this, then tried to do the OTA upgrade after flashing to 2.3.2 so I would keep my root , after downloading and applying the OTA upgrade, my AT&T R800at says... "Software Update - Could not update software". Any idea?

[Q] Xperia Arc Update (Flashing)

I want to flash my Xperia Arc with the 2.3.3 xLoud update and with 2.3.4 afterwards.
I have two questions regarding the flashing;
1. Will flashing delete my installed apps and other files?
2. There are two versions available for flashing with 2.3.3; one is UK generic and the other one is Global generic. I've seen reports that the Global generic version has some 3G and WiFi problems......so is there any problem if I flash with UK generic?
NOTE: I have brought my handset from India and am living here as well.
Thanks in advance!
The guides are quite clear, so pick one and flash it.

ok.....
okay, this almost answers my query
Now, installing a rom like cyanogen mod performs a hard reset and delets everything on the phone.
So will flashing my arc with the se firmware also perform a hard reset or will my apps, contacts etc. still remain?
Just unthick "wipe userdata" in FlashTool and you'll keep everything.

Yoy didn't say what's your current version.
Just don't downgrade if you are on 2.3.4 already or u'll f*ck ur phone.
You can downgrade, but with special method.

Clarrifcation - LT15i 4.0.2.A.0.62, 2.3.4

Hello,
Been looking around on the forums, and kinda got a jist of how this works for the ARC, I've rooted my own Samsung galaxy S2, but Im trying to do the same for a friend.
as mentioned hes currently running 2.3.4 on LT15i 4.0.2.A.0.62. From what I've read you have to downgrade to .42? if the bootloader is locked. however it it is unlocked (which I think it is/is unlockable) then what do I do next?
I plan to root the phone then probably install cyanogen mod on it instead.
Thanks
You got 3 options with unlocked bootloader
1 you can still down grade to .42 then root with either flashtools or with zergrush easy root method.
2 with unlocked bootloader flash a custom kernel that has root already. Ie doomlords
What ever you do if I bootloader is unlocked r do not update over the air as this will brick you phone.
3 Out perhaps another option would be to flash ics room and get root very easy look for binary part in dev section.
Hope this helps

Thanks! just what I needed.
Im going to Flash to .62 pre-rooted then install clockwork mod and titanium backup then flash to Cyanogenmod.
Thanks again!

Does rooting make your Arc slower?

Hey folks, my wife has a xperia Neo unrooted on official Ics, its blazing fast, on the other hand mine is an arc rooted on global ics and its slow. What can I do to improve this?
Sent from my LT15i using xda app-developers app
It doesn't no, and you're supposed to find out what root is before doing it then asking how to utilise it.
Sent from Myushi
Actually, I have asked several other friends with Adnroid phones and they say that after rooting the phone get slower, my wife's is not rooted stock ICS and its faster than my rooted ARC on stok global ICS....and I rooted my phone mostly b/c I have titanium backup and after a rom install I get all the apps I backed up before..

Did you used doomlord's root toolkit to get root access, tchĂȘ? Are you using latest ICS (.587)?
No such a thing like slowing the phone down after root. It is the same, but if you manage to use this root, to change drivers, apps, scripts, etc, you can make it several times faster! I am happy that i have rooted and unlocked my arc.
Do i need to have root if my bl is unlocked and i want to flash custom rom?

If you installed a kernel that have CWM (eg: adv stock kernel), simply enter in CWM and flash the compatible custom rom. If you're still using the stock kernel (but I guess that's not your case, since there's no point in unlock BL if you're gonna use stock kernel), you'll need root to install CWM to flash the custom rom.
First i will flash custom kernel for unlocked bootloader, of course, so i dont need to root this stock software?

It won't be the root that's caused their Phones it will be whatever mods they've made.

No such thing I've heard 83732727629947721 different stories of that. either you
1) didn't root it properly
2) installed a mod that made your phone slow
Sent from my Xperia Arc S using xda premium
No... I don't see any diference
What you do after rooting matters, you just have to tweak ur phone n it will be blazing fast!
Sent from my LT18i using xda premium
Definitely nope. It's the room, believe on me. I had several roms including the original sony's one, I wanted to burn my phone, but now I have a jellybean ROM and it's fast as hell, I feel like I have the best phone in the world.
