first i live in kansas city (sprint headquarter's backyard). the constant switching, roaming, searching or whatever it does just makes this phone hard to use. the phone itself for calling is fine but data is becoming a deal killer here. is this indicative of sprint's network or just that this phone needs an update of sorts. my verizon 3g speeds while never stellar always stays connected and i can at least browse the web or do rhapsody both of which it seems almost impossible on this phone since i've gotten it. i, like many others here want to love this phone but this data thing is a problem.
I'm lucky I live in a good area... AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint are all pretty much on-par with one another. And I haven't experienced it yet (just a few days in here), but the back-up to Verizon is a good thing in a pinch. T-Mobile is even decent here.
Every carrier has parts of the country where it's good, and where it's bad.
That's not an issue with "data is simply unusable for this phone".
I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that your data experience would be WORSE with any other Sprint phone in fact. This phone is fast enough to swallow data and turn it around and present it to the user in whatever browser/app quickly enough to create an impression of even faster "data", in my initially-switched-to-Sprint first impression.
Sounds to ME that you have more of a problem with Sprint, in your area. Not the phone.
sadly that may be the case in which no amount of tweaking is going to help. i checked the coverage map and i live in a good to best wimax area. sigh, oh well. i'll give it another week.

Call sprint and have them refresh your settings. If that doesn't work maybe you got a bad unit
That's why you stick with network with the better coverage in your area, not just buy the phone and expect similar results. Sometimes you just can't have both.

Before i did anything with the phone after purchasing the phone from Sprint, I did a Profile, then PRL, then Firmware.
I didn't have any data isssues, nor do i have any what so ever, and im inside a building ( casino ) In fact, and this people block everything!
Even called Sprint and was adviced to do Profile first before PRL ect.. any reason why?

It's most definitely the phone. My EVO performs well, and just for sh*ts and giggles, I scrounged up my old Sanyo flip phone (model PM-8200...before Sprint was with Nextel)....no issues. Even the crappy Sanyo mobile browser works well for its level.
This has been discussed in several other threads - people are having issues with dropped data and slow data. You should probably let Samsung know as they are unaware of any issues (as not enough people have contacted them). My EVO 3D got much better data - same network, same location.
You can call, email or Twitter -
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SPH-D710ZKASPR
The more people that let them know, the sooner they patch this thing and get it fixed. Posting here isn't going to get Samsung's attention as much as direct emails, calls or twitters.
I've already contacted them - they are unaware of data issues with this phone because not enough people are letting them know. If people are willing to post here it would be great if they were willing to drop an email to Samsung.

I used the drop down and selected the SPHd700- and then clarified in my email which model I have.
The modding community will come up with a fix before Samsung even admits to it. They built in sleep to conserve battery, but the data chip keeps using the snooze button instead of getting out of bed.

If I was to send Sprint speed test screenshots with my phone rooted (TNz Blend ROM) would they say anything?
Imho I don't think it would accomplish anything. I'm guessing your hopes are that sprint will have a visual of what they already know..their data speeds blow. Don't get me wrong, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, but I think sprint would just dismiss it. Especially coming from a "modded" device.

Well I couldn't agree more. However, a theme park has moved into my area and during the day I nor can anyone else I know that has sprint send or receive calls or text at least 75% of the time. Also less than dial up speeds during the day. Like .02Mbps to .08Mbps. I the really early morning hours I'be gotten up to 2Mbps, on average 1.30Mbps. I mean my network location works everywhere but where I live... (the crap tower)

I've heard of people successfully receiving one of those broadband powered Sprint mobile extenders...like a mini cell tower powered by your broadband connection (AIRAVE). Just call them, complain that you're having problems with cellular reception in your home and state whether or not the company is planning on implementing any fixes for this situation. They'll probably make you run some diagnostics on your phone but state that a friend of yours was given one of those and see what they say? YMMV
Call this: 866 556 7310
Tell them you have problems with reception in and around your house, and is tired of having to walk mad far to get reception. Ask them if they could supply you with their AIRAVE.
Yea man. An Airave. I actually have 2 of them lol. My house is fine but 30 feet outside of my house or anywhere near that tower I'm toast

Ok yeah, that's ridiculous. They need to reevaluate that area and upgrade the tower that's being pulled from. There is a section on sprints web page that, once you've put in your zip, will show you tower placement and whether that tower has been or is scheduled to be upgraded. Let sprint know you've noticed this, they want to retain you as a customer, if anything they'll credit you're acct for the inconvenience. I have to admit, they DO have great customer service when faced with a legitimate complaint.

Ohhh trust me I've had ohh about 10 tickets open myself. Not to mention others who have called. I've gotten my share of credits also. At one point they apparently had 10 tickets open at once. I've talked to many supervisors and a couple engineers about it. This has been happening since October. They said its been "fixed" 4 times now. I LOL at that

Yeah, about AIRAVE, it may boost your singal, but in my case it duplicated my texts or caused some not to go out. I turn AIRAVE off and everything is fine. As soon as it's back on, boom 2,3 copies of the same text come randomly.
A while back I took my phone into sprint because the screen was going dead every few minutes. They gave me a new phone and I immediately turned on 4g to try it out. The woman at the store took it out of my hand, turned off 4g and said "We don't have 4g around here, don't even turn it on."
I listened to her until tonight. I turned on 4G in my room in my home where I can hardly get any signal at all… Dolphin browser loads almost immediately, Baconreader pulls reddit up so fast. Loading images takes seconds instead of minutes.
… I'm seriously going to slap someone. I'm just trying to think of reasons as to why this could happen without me knowing. I mean I know I'm a rube for not turning on 4G since she said it would be a waste of time but this is completely contradicting everything she said. Is it possible my rom (calkulin 3.0) could be helping my phone connect with 4G towers from other providers? It says 4G and 3G signal and roam control is set to auto and it is not roaming.
The speed test still says it's below 1mb for upload and download. Pretty much .40 mbps. Still that's better than what it was before… I'm just so confused.
Some employees are just misinformed and well, just dumb. They are a bad representation of a company. But yea if i was u, i probably would've turn 4g on as soon as i left the store lol

Maybe they updated your service since she said that or she just doesn't know that 4g is actually available. El29 has the best performance as far as signal goes. At least that's my opinion.

The only other company using WiMax is Clear who's parent company if you want to call it that built for Sprint. Though I can't be certain pretty sure everything their using is part of their contract with sprint and very few towers are being added.

1st. why the hell would you listen to someone when they tell you not to do something with your phone, its yours.
2nd. you pay for that service, thats one of the first things I would have checked to make sure it did/didnt work in an area you knew you could get 4g.
3rd. CONGRATS on finding 4g where most cant

While there is no advertised 4G in Omaha,it is considered a test market so I get 4g from clearwire. Check for yourself. Www.clear.com/coverage
Only a speed test will tell you if you have 4G, or not.
Well, Sprint notes in the community forums that there is limited 4G coverage in Sioux Falls area... CW suggests they're using the BridgeMaxx towers.

So I'm moving to a new apartment in a couple of weeks, and the area is notorious for having crappy sprint coverage. Being as that I'm a 3rd party retailer for sprint, my rep set me up with a free airrave, no questions asked.
MY question is, does the Airrave have some sort of password protection so that i won't have 5 neighbors constantly using my Airrave? I know it works through my internet, so I don't want to have a bunch of people slowing down my internet.
Also, I was reading about an issue with text messaging with the airrave. Does anyone know if they fixed the problem yet?

The Airrave has made a tremendous difference for my coverage at home-- I live 35 flights in the sky here in Chicago and prior to the Airrave there were some places in my condo unit that I got full signal strength and other places within the unit that I got no signal; with the Airrave I am full strength and no longer need to worry about missed calls/texts due to my phone being in one of the dead zones in my unit.
I don't have password protection enabled on the Airrave (my Wi-Fi & broadband is PW protected) and haven't noticed a negative impact on my web speeds due to the potential of other's accessing Airrave. I would be happy to see if PW protection makes a difference if you'd like me to test it out.
As far as the sending of texts issue-- yes on RARE occasions w/the E4GT on wi-fi (which is connected to Airrave) I will get a Failed message when trying to send a text (surprisingly NO issues receiving texts, I even get texts at the same time I am getting Failed to Send notifications). My solutions, both which have worked consistently: 1) Disconnect the E4GT from wi-fi and try to resend 2) If that doesn't work reboot and try to resend.
Hope that helps
There is a way to lock it down so only you could use it.. and possibly any other lines on your acct. However when i asked sprint about it they either didnt want to hassle with it or it really doesnt matter because they didnt want me to lockit down.. either way it has a certain range which can be extended.. i think 800ft then can be extendended to a certain amt of feet. Rarely does it have issues and the only thing they make you do is reset everything. The speeds are still 3g speeds but where you have no service it works perfectly.. i use the antennae and have it close to the ceiling (i have two floors) and of course practically in thw window which is needed to maintain a good gps lock.. other than that, cant complain about something your using free of charge. There is also the time i wanted the gs2.. and what would ya know, my airrave was elig for a full upgrade ;-). So got the sgs2, did esn chng with my line, switched airrave back, sold the og epic.. win/win situation!

Had mine 6 months and haven't had any problems sending or receiving any texts
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I got my airrave in late November and hated it.
The unit caused my phone to constantly think that it was in Tulsa, OK (when in fact I live just north of Oklahoma City, OK) - which was pretty annoying as trying to get the weather or GPS navigation was pretty useless until I got out of the airrave's range.
Then I did some testing and found out that in fact I was missing a rare amount of incoming text messages - like perhaps 1 in 20 or so.
I hate missing any message so that combined with the GPS issue was enough to make me discontinue using the airrave. Fortunately by then some of the better modems for our device had been released which made it to where I didn't need the airrave just to get reliable service at home anymore. I still occasionally miss a call because it takes so long for the phone to receive notification of the call, but I'd rather miss a call than a text message, as voicemail ALWAYS goes through, whereas a missed text message just goes off into the ether.
I came to this thread hoping to see if the problems had been solved yet, but I figured I should share my issues as well. Also I tried a ton of stuff to get the airrave to work properly even with some really knowledgable sprint techs and nothing worked - there was supposed to be an update out "sometime 2012" though so not sure if that's been pushed yet or not.
Edit: Oh also, I wanted to mention that yes you can lock down the unit to only respond to your phone number(s) pretty easily. Thing has a HUGE range as well so it has that going for it. Oh and it's not a big deal for me but do keep in mind your bill will go up by $1.50 a month for that stupid "administration fee" - but you can work it to get a free upgrade out of the line sometimes so you can make it worth it for you.
Hope this helps!
The only time I needed it was when I had the evo3d, I had no signal in my house. Since I had it I've had the texting bug, it been unplugged in my kitchen for the past 3 months.
I have had the Airvana with no issues with the Evo and then Evo3D. Got my E4TG and had texting issues for the first day, then I was fine for a few months. Starting last Thursday, I can no longer receive texts from Sprint or any carrier, I can send fine. I reset the Airave at least 15 times and still the same issue. Sprint says that's just the way the Airavana model works and sometimes it has text problems. They can't explain why it worked fine for months and then just stopped. I am going to hook up my original Samsung Airave that only did 1x data and see if it still happens. I use wifi at home so no need for the Airvana 3G data, especially if I am going to have more texting issues.
I've had my airave since October 2011 and it's made a HUGE difference in service. I live in an area that the Sprint coverage map says has great voice and full 3G, but in actuality I can barely get 1 bar anywhere in my neighborhood, data is deplorable and, often I was roaming in my own apartment. Because of this I had to argue through 3 CS reps before they just gave me one without trying to charge the $120. I do not have it locked down to my number, and i have not noticed any issues with my internet speed - Netflix works flawlessly on my laptop and through my bluray. I have noticed that my phone will sometimes not switch over once in range and I have to toggle airplane mode to straighten it out. Frustrating, but rare.
I would like to know how one of the the previous posters was able to finagle an upgrade out of the Airave line though.

my airrave is awesome .. i had to ***** to like 3 people to get it free with no monthly payment but i finally got it . but when i leave my house i dont get the reception .. even like in my driveway so unless your in an apartment building with thin walls i dont think the reception would even reach anyone elses place
I love mine. You finally get some decent 3g speeds. I don't think you have to worry about locking it though. The range isn't that far and you have to also take into account that not everyone has a sprint phone. Plus it doesn't effect my computer speeds at home. We can have Netflix going on two computers and i can talk on the phone with no hiccups.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Where I currently live, I have decent coverage, but I wanted to have it before I moved. I REALLY hope I don't have any text issues, because that would really irritate me. As far as admin fees, I doubt I'll be charged anything. Being as that I'm a store manager, every fee so far has been waived. It also meant I was able to get my E4GT for $50 the day it came out.
I have the texting issue... they have reset the air rave continuously, replaced it twice... and it still base the same problem. Doesn't matter if I am connected to wifi or not.

The Epic 4G Touch forum, as well as the XDA site is rife with complaints about the Airave. I had it and I had the problem with handing off calls once I left its range but my kids had tons of problems with text messages queuing up. Others swear by it.
Just remember: You have to return it or they will charge you for the device. Not hard but when I returned mine they tried to charge me. I think it was $250. I kept my tracking number tho so no problem... Except for one more 30 minute to Sprint.
Do not, I repeat do not lock the airrave down so only you can use it.
This results in anyone else trying to use a sprint phone within the airraves coverage not able to get service at all.

And yet if you don't lock it down you allow anybody with Sprint service to use your internet... unlimited... unknowingly... Yeah, the last thing I want is for my wacked out neighbor downloading kiddie porn through my internet connection.
I've been with Sprint for a while now. Lately i've had a lot of complaints that people can't get to me. My girlfriend never gets notified when she gets a voicemail.
It takes us 3-4 times to dial any number.I've been missing important call for the last 2 months. One of them including my grandfather passing away.
It's really bad at my work. No signal at all and always roaming. I cannot continue to use this service.
I've called customer support and they told me that they are aware that a lot of people have had missed calls since March when they started rolling out the network vision upgrade. So for the last months I can get at least 4 people that have the same problem. Nothing is getting resolved and it seems nobody cares.
I took my phone in to get it check out by a tech and there is nothing wrong with it. Since I know of at least 4 other persons experiencing this, I'm sure now that this is not an issue with me.
What I am asking is why do I need to keep paying for a service that I cannot rely on? I have missed important calls, one of them regarding a family member passing away. I can barely make any calls. The data is really slow, pathetic. I cannot count on the Sprint network to do any of the basic functions that I am paying for.
I have tried to call Sprint to get any type of conpenssation or to get them to let me move but they keep telling me that it will all be better.
Anyone got any suggestions. I cannot stay with a company that is responsible for missing the last call i might have gotten from my granfather.

I have tried to call Sprint to get any type of conpenssation or to get them to let me move but they keep telling me that it will all be better.
Anyone got any suggestions. I cannot stay with a company that is responsible for missing the last call i might have gotten from my granfather.

OK. you obviously didnt read everything... and thats ok. thank you for your opinion but that's not going to happen.
Selling my phones to pay an EFT because of spotty service is not justifiable.
If it has been driving you crazy which it seems to have since you miss important calls. Go with Verizon which will probably solve all your problems.
And you said it yourself that you cannot stay with a company that gives you problems so go to another company that will satisfy you
How does that not solve your problem.

You not being happy in no way entitles you to get out of a contract fee free. Network vision is supposed to dramatically increase usability and from what I've read from people it has. For every four people you know that's having service issues I can guarantee there's a hundred who don't. You're on a website with information on different things to try to fix any possible problem. If you truly don't like the service suck it up and pay the etf

I think the OP is asking what the suggested method is for convincing Sprint that he should not have to pay any fees to terminate service because essentially Sprint is not upholding their side of the contract. In other words, what is the procedure for claiming breach of contract on Sprint? And yes, breach of contract is a legal means to get out of a contract without being obligated to pay any fees and sometimes is enough to get rewarded compensation for those months that you were paying for and not receiving service.
I'm in mostly the same boat as the OP but fortunately the only thing I ever use is text messaging and data through wifi so it doesn't bother me that I can't make or receive calls at work or home much less get any kind of data at either location besides wifi. For the most basic of plans, Sprint charges me less than Verizon would which is why I moved to them but it is a bit disappointing to have a phone where 1/2 of the features (arguably the more important 1/2) don't work.

Force roam all the time like crazy. I have seen couple people who were asked to leave sprint due to that with no etf. Under no circumstances I would do that but that's what others have done before.
When Network Vision took place around my area, things got really bad until everything was set up and running. Well worth the wait

If they are aware of a problem in your area with service and have no eta u can cancel with no etf. When sprint Renegotiated its deals with Verizon and the coverage shrank in certain areas I know for a fact they let 100's if not thousands of people cancel freely so I see this as no different
Edit: if u get no where with regular csr pm me for the number for executive services they will let u cancel for sure with no etf

Thank you all for the answers.
In my book i cannot stay with Sprint out of principle. Because of them my phone never ringed when my grandfather called me on the night before he died.
My eft after talking to a representative is only 100$.
It should be zero if your phone doesn't work.
Sprint cost me $300 dollars a few weeks ago. Good like trying to get anything out of them.
Sorry for your loss, yes sprint sucks, i hope to leave it soon.

You might want to voice up on sprint forums rather than on XDA, there are few sprint employees here.
Or put your phone up on MP if its a epic touch for example post it cheap around $150-175 for a quick sell and use that money if they do end up charging you $100.

There was a cell site that covered my gf's old workplace and the bowling alley across the street we bowled at that was a data black hole for years. I don't know if it's improved but we don't go there anymore. There are just some buildings that are horrible for rf penetration. The moment you step outside, you get service and signal. There's always the possibility that there's some electronics or machines in the building that are creating interference in the frequency band these phones operate in.

Same here
heres a great idea....instead of complaining why dont you be proactive and cancel ur service and go to another carrier. Other than that xda is not a site to whine and complain about sprint or your service which most of us do not experience since we do not live where you do.

hey guys i have been on the gnex previously gs3 for about 4 days and just now noticing horrible data speeds on sprint had to revert to flashing vzw prl's. they continue to send me refurb gnex's and they all the same issue and the only option they give me for a device is a lg viper which is still running gb so i consider this a downgrade. what can be done for sprint to offer me a better more reasonable device, i continue to call with the same outcome called account services aka "the retention department" contact tech support with no luck they tell me to take it to a service center in which case i don't have time with my current schedule to physically bring it in to the store does anyone going thought something similar have a positive outcome in the situation.
Get some screen shots of your data speeds over the course of a day so you have some supporting information. Speedtest.net is the app I use. If you have a different device that you can show comparison with, do that as well. Get in touch with Sprint's retention department and let them know that you are still having problems with data speeds and can document it. If they still refuse to provide a new device, tell them that you would like to be released from your contract due to failure to provide the specified speeds. They are obligated to provide at least the specified lowest speed. Two things you should keep in mind. 1) Your data speeds are going to have to be below Sprint's minimum specs consistently for this to work. 2) Stay calm and polite with the people you are talking with. They are usually willing to try and help, especially when a customer is considering leaving due to dissatisfaction. Even if they aren't willing to do what's necessary to keep your business, at least you'll be free to take it elsewhere. They will request that the phone be returned, but if it's defective anyway, no big deal. Hope this helps and you can get it sorted out soon.

thanks buddy i have called retention several times but look for a way out of contract seems like the best option my d.l speeds are consistantly below 100 kb/s however my uploads are about 400 so that part i am worried about and what do they say i am supposed to get on 3g? i will save some s.s. on computer once they are needed.

Not sure what Sprint is guaranteeing for minimum on 3G, but if you check out your contract details online, they should be specified. My strong suspicion is that 100kb/s will be short of that minimum by a pretty significant amount. Good luck, and keep us posted.

i will keep you posted. i have asked several time that i can have a copy of my contact mailed to me or email or what not and all they have is a brief over view of contract policies not the full blown contract and that i should have it however i never recieved anything in the first place or anything mailed to me for that matter, isn't this technically a way out of contract even though i started my contract over the phone.seems like a resonable conplain if they can't provide me with a contract as any contract i have ever had the "supplier" of services should have a copy of the "terms"

Before you go that route, try logging in to your Sprint account and see if your contract is in there in a digital format. I agree that they should be able to send you a copy of the complete contract, rather than an abbreviated one, but I think you'll be coming from a stronger position with the data speed issue.
You're on Sprint, whatever it is, it's normal. I'm serious, no bars where Verizon gets full 4G, normal.
With friends' phones I've never really gotten anything better than 100kbps down, especially away from a window.
So I may just argue for a contract release....

been trying to argue and they keep telling me to take it to a service center and have it "fixed" which isn't going to solve the problem they are going to factory reset my phone and say ok it works fine now. and back to square one.
And people wonder why they're the only major carrier with unlimited, unthrottled data. Any other way and they'd go bankrupt.
Throw in words like "lawsuit" if you can finally get your hands on the contract and prove that 100kbps down is basically illegal. You'll be set loose faster than...something fast lol

Their not the only unlimited, unthrottled data carrier. T-mobile has unlimited, unthrottled data as well. I get 6 to 9mpbs down on my GNEX on t-mobile. I know that isn't as fast and Verizon, or maybe not as fast as some people with T-Mobile, but day to day stuff it is fast enough.

they were the one of the only "unlimited" for a long time until recently tmobile, but in my opinion i would much rather have a decent internet connection than have unlimited bull**** where i am waiting for years for one freaking web page to load it is a never ending battle with these guys i just want out, hell i have been with sprint for over 7 years and nothing will budge wtf!!
T-Mobile's only "unlimited" until you hit your cap, at which time they throw you into EDGE jail.

They just introduced the truly unlimited plan, a couple of months ago. I hit 20 gigs thanks to to YouTube in 720.

Sounds about right for Sprint 3G speeds in a non-network vision upgraded area. Sprint does not guarantee speeds unfortunately. There is nothing wrong with your phone. Your best chance for faster speeds on Sprint will be if you are in an area that will be upgraded to Network Vision soon. I can consistently get over 1Mbps on 3G where I had less than 100kbps before...that is of course if I choose to turn off 4G.
Coverage; Where Your Device Will Work; Service Speeds
Our coverage maps are available at our authorized retail locations and on our website. The specific network coverage you get will depend on the radio transmissions your Device can pick up and Services you’ve chosen. Our coverage maps provide high level estimates of our coverage areas when using Services outdoors under optimal conditions. Coverage isn’t available everywhere. Coverage and Service speeds are not guaranteed. Coverage is subject to change without notice. Service speeds may depend on the Service purchased. Actual speeds will vary. Estimating wireless coverage, signal strength, and Service speed is not an exact science. There are gaps in coverage within our estimated coverage areas that-along with other factors both within and beyond our control (for example, network problems, network or internet congestion, software, signal strength, your Device, structures, buildings, weather, geography, topography, server speeds of the websites you access, actions of third parties, etc.)—may result in dropped and blocked connections, slower Service speeds, or otherwise impact the quality of Service. Services that rely on location information, such as E911 and GPS navigation, depend on your Device’s ability to acquire satellite signals (typically not available indoors) and network coverage. While your Device is receiving a software update, you may be unable to use your Device in any manner until the software update is complete.
They allegedly got rid of throttling, but I still see "5GB of full speed data" on their site.
