I have been modifying my phone since the the beginning of the Inc and have a lot of modifying/ flashing knowledge, however this one stumps me. I have never had any data/ 3g issues with this phone. Just the other day I was pulling 2.4 mbps speed tests and having very fast data. Today at work I noticed that web pages were acting very slow and so was the other data on the phone. I tried all of the usual things (Toggling airplane, restart, *228 option one and two), and I still cannot get my data working properly again. If I toggle the airplane, as soon as the 3g sign comes back in white it is very snappy, however seconds after that once it turns green it is so slow and most of the time doesn't finish loading. I tried calling verizon to see if there is any outages in the area, and they said that everything should be fine.
Since then, I tried a full wipe (reset, cache, and dalvik), and installed the newest version of CM7 nightly 201. This didn't help the problem and I am still having the same issue.
I looked into a RUU reset and Im thinking that might be my last option. Would I loose root doing this and could it easily be retained with unrevoked? Also should I use the froyo RUU or can I just go with the newest GB?
Any other suggestions on what to try?
Do the 2.2 RUU, as you can root again with Unrevoked. If you use the 2.3 RUU, you need to be s-off or you cannot root.
I'd do the 2.2 RUU.

BEFORE the RUU, have you flashed any Sense 3.0 rom? If you have noticed instances where 3G drops or you seem to be stuck in 1X you could follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229732
In regards to the rom mentioned in the thread, you could also use JoelZ9614's OTA rom or Incubus26jc OTA 2.3.4 rom from what I understand.

Verizon's "data slow down for the top 5% of data users" has recently been put into effect (even though we heard about it months ago).
If you use a lot of data you probably fall under that category and it's why you're limited.
No way around it since Verizon caps it through their network.
If you're limited it's likely that it's not even possible for you to get in the top 5% next month and your speed will be returned.
// Just one possibility. May be your ROM, Radio, PRL, high traffic, tower issues.

I've been having serious problems with my phone today. I was trying to get some market updates this morning and it was taking forever to download: 3G was either nonexistent or turning on and off, etc. Weird, since normally I have full signal here and amazing data speeds. So, I decided to reboot to see if that would solve the problem. When it was turning back on, I kept getting a reboot loop on the loading screen (Fressshhhh over and over again). So I pulled the battery, booted into recovery, wiped the cache & Dalvik-cache, and rebooted. Solved the reboot loop but didn't fix the data problem. I then called Sprint and got them to re-provision data services which still didn't fix it. Any idea on what is going on?
Also, I tried rebooting again while typing this and keep getting stuck on the white 'HTC EVO 4G' screen, even with a cache wipe again.
Running: Fresh 3.1 with latest radio (no 4G in Louisville), my PRI is still 1.34
I live in the 502 too
Data has been pretty unpredictable for me. I'll typically get 1.2 - 1.7 Mbs down but I've spent entire days pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I'm maxxing out at 600k down only to see it go back up the next day, guessing it's just a result of the unpredictability of 3g service
I just now ran a few speed tests, (I'm in 40222 right now) and I'm getting between 70kbps and 600kbps down. DISGUSTING
I'd give it a day and check again.
fwiw, and for whatever reason I seem to get the best data xfer speeds running DC3.5
*edit- about the boot loops, I lost interest in FreshROMs when I had my Hero so I have no experience with it on the EVO. I would back all your stuff up and just wipe a reflash the rom. Then restore apps only, NOT any system data.

Ha, 40223 for me right now.
I'd LOVE to get 70 down right now, it took me 15 - 20 minutes to download a 2 MB update earlier. I'll try out DC, I only have fresh because it was the first thing I flashed and I haven't really experimented too much with any others. Got to wait until later though, no cable with me at the moment & this 3G problem is killing the battery as it is.
I recently rooted my Evo and put CM7 nightly 12 on it. All was well, I even installed the Savaged Zen kernel. Even better. Just yesterday I updated to CM7 RC2 to give it a shot. Today I went to work and had to drive to a remote area where I don't get service, so I put my Evo in airplane mode to save battery life. (this was after having it overheat while charging, could be a hardware issue) At the end of the day I turned the 3G radio back on and nothing... It connects and disconnects to the tower. It will not send data and it will not place phone calls on the 3G connection (WiFi works). I did a restore back to nightly 12 to see if maybe it was a problem with the OS. Nothing. A few hours ago it began functioning again, but after checking it a few minutes ago I have discovered it is back to no connection. (the signal bars bounce between nothing and full, but never shows the X for no signal) Has anyone else had an issue like this? Should I restore back to sense and unroot to take advantage of my warranty? If this has already been posted before please direct me to the right thread.
I'm having the same problem. I installed Cyanogen RC 2 and had no problem since it came out. I went on vacation to a beach, and during my trip I switched it on to airplane mode since I was in a remote location. After turning it back on, I noticed I can't get the Data Connection to work. The 3g bar doesn't even show up, and after messing with the settings trying to fix the problem I managed to do nothing. I tried using a backup I made from a week past, and encountered the same problem. Then I flashed the newest nightly and still no Data whatsoever. Wifi works fine, and 4g is acting weird but I got it to work a few times. Does this have something to do with sprint?
I think it is the same as the 4G 3G hang. I typically get it while tethering and the phone is normaly quite warm.
So I managed to fix the problem. I ended up flashing Koni's Elite Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941055
I got an error that said "Error 67 registration failure"
I updated my profile and it was automatically fixed. I'm not aware you can do this on cyanogen stock rom, but I think you can dial a number that will do this for you.
After getting the 3g to work again, I flashed back to the stock cyanogen, and it is still working. So for now im good to go.
I do think is sprint and not the rom because I did a restore to warm z and was still having the same problems. Also my brother's evo was doing the same thing and he doesnt have cm7 on it.
I figured it was something to do with the profile... I restored all the way back to sense and attempted to update profile, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I will try that ROM and see if it does anything. Why can't they just make this easy and allow updating of vital software that allows the radios to work on WiFi or from SDcard? This is dumb.
I tried that ROM and nothing works. Not really sure what to do. I might have to restore to Sense and unroot to take it back... I really want to avoid that if at all possible.
Unrooted my phone and getting a free replacement from Sprint. Still unsure of the problem, seems to work randomly.

I also have the same problem. No 3g data, gps, and 4g is acting weird.
I also had the same registration error number 67. My question is, how do you update your profile?
I was using MIUI and it had 4G all the time... then I switched to Virtuous and it had so many problems with reception automatically.
I also tried installing the kernel to fix it, but it didn't work.
so i gave up and I went to CM7 and I am still not getting 4G signal anymore
and I get internet but its ridiculously slow now
PLZ HELP!
could be several things... if it's a rom/radio issue, you're s.o.l. until you can narrow down what's causing it there. did you perform a full wipe between Virtuous and CM7? did you use cwm recovery to perform the wipe? any other weirdness going on besides the apparent lack of HSPA+? I always, even going from one CM-based rom to another, perform a clean wipe either thru adb or, now, thanks to our buddy amazinglarry, using superwipeg2. you might give that a shot (you don't need to wipe efs data unless you're having gps issues, by the way) and install CM7 clean again.
I will say this: when I initially started using the CM7 nightlies, I ran into a weird issue where my "H" icon wouldn't show up, only 3G/E, but I was definitely on HSPA+ as evidenced from speed tests (there's no way I'd be getting 9000+kbps down on 3G). so, very first step: download Speed Test on the app market and, if you're in an area where HSPA+ is strong, see if you can tell whether or not the icon is not displaying for you like what happened in my case. how fast your internet seems to be going isn't really indicative of whether or not you're on HSPA+ or not, you can encounter horrendous lag browsing even in an area where it should be lightning quick. what ended up fixing the missing H icon for me, oddly, was a radio flash. the PC10IMG method of flashing radios is far from intimidating, so even if you're uncomfortable with that kind of stuff, give it a shot. I've had the best luck with the TMO-US post-OTA radio (26.03.02.26) in terms of a good balance between speed and battery life, but ymmv.
if none of that solves your problem, check your APN settings. here is a pretty thorough walkthrough on that.
aaaand if all else fails, call TMO and ask them to give you a hand. of course, don't tell them anything about custom roms or rooting, just tell them you're having a problem where your phone seems to not be receiving HSPA+ signal. it very well could be a goof-up on their end. when I first got my G1 back in the day, I had all sorts of trouble getting 3G and I eventually had to replace my sim card which fixed the problem automatically.
best'a luck.
thank you, it was the Radio. Something must have happened with it somehow you were VERY VERY helpful!
One thing you do have to know as well for Virtuous ROMs is that the so called 4G or H is actually represented as 3G+. So if you look at your signal and see a + behind it, it is using fauxG
EDIT: nm, just ignore what I just said. I completely passed over the fact that you switched to cm7.
Ok guys so in a nutshell here's the problem. I have a rooted EVO that's I've been playing with for over two months. I used to have amazing 3G at home especially, like over 1.5 mbps minimum 800 kpbs at peak. Since about 2 nights ago after updating MikG 2.15 to 2.2 I've been stuck at 1x and can't get 3G to hold. It's not an AOSP vs Sense interpretation issue since there is an actual performance issue. Speed tests won't even load and if they do it's like 15kpbs and web sites do not load or take minutes to load google.com
4G is intact and when I went to work today I noticed in the car I got a 3G lock however speeds were around 500k so it has something to do with location but sprint as well as my 3 other phones in the house confirm it's not an area disruption. I've wiped all, calkulin wipe, reflashed, nandroid restored, EPST restored, tried different sense and AOSP, reflashed latest radio combo, prl and profile updated... Pretty much everything. If it matters I did have this problem when I first got the evo prior to rooting and sprint tech told me to so the EPST restore and that worked like magic but the problem then was my 3G didn't work anywhere, home or work.
Is there anything I'm missing or do I need to figure out how to remove all traces of root and head to sprint? (if so an tips on standard procedure would be appreciated like about sd card censoring etc)
Currently latest OTA rom rooted 4.24
Latest radio combo
Prl 60680 (which I'd like to blame actually considering 3g lock at work I think I was good with 0115 or whatever prior was but can't find file or get epst to load ##776# )
not sure to confirm hardware version if that matters cuz I've had it read out both as 003 and 002. I got the phone at the end of April rooted it may 24 via unrevoked.
Really bummed out and any advice appreciated. Once again I've spent two days googling and looking through forums and tried all options but mine seems to be resistant so please avoid the "google" it advice. One forum post on Androidforums seemed like my issue but it was also unreplied to unfortunately.
Your user profile password could have changed. It can change for a number of reasons, but one example is you to switch to a different phone on your Sprint phone line while you had somebody else root your phone for you and then switching back when he returns it. Flash to a ROM that has "Update Profile" and update you profile username.
Also sometimes you can get slower 3G speeds if you let your phone "Update PRL". So cancel the PRL update if your phone tries to update after you "Update Profile".

Thanks for the reply. I always had the phone on me and thats why I went back to a sense rom. I've updated profile and reset it too canceling prl update. Even tried all the tweaks out there. Finally gave in and called sprint, they pushed something OTA during a battery pull probably profile cuz it did same thing on reboot. It brought me up to like 100-200 kbps since that didn't work their grand solution was offering me a free airman access point which is awesome since I didn't even know about it or ask for it but that still leaves me helpless outside my home which is where a cell phone is meant to be lol
Something to note is I just updated to the 11114 PRL posted 7/17 and I'm moving around 400-500 Kbps which is technically 3G but crap still especially when I did have fast speeds. I'm about to give up, gonna chalk it up to sprint service issues they won't admit to and it can't be throttling because my 5 lines use less than the average heavy user uses on one line. Another week of this and I'll probably have to unroot and head to store, especially if airvana doesn't help.
I flashed my phone to synergy last week, network access and tethering seemed to be fine. Then my network connevtion started to slow down. I'd get the 1x icon, then the phone would start roaming. This would happen in my home where the connection was always 3 or 4 bars for 3g.
Next i started using the sprint wifi tether app since as part of synergy it worked. Now it no longer works and neither do other tether apps. When i start the tether apps on the evo they seem to work just fine. my acer iconia will connect, attempt to get ip, drop, connect, drop, connect, drop.... An endless loop.
And in addition the sprint tether now tells me i dont have a tether plan (which is true)! Sprint is blocking my phone/preventing tethering somehow?
Any ideas as to how to fix the issue? (besides pay sprint their $30 bucks a month)
Have you tried a reboot? Have you tried clearing cache and dalvik? Have you tried uninstalling and re-install Wireless Tether? Have you called sprint to find out if there is a data outage in your area?
Made sure that you installed the hack for wireless tether using the Sprint app? Tried a different ROM?
Sounds like there is a Verizon antenna near and your Evo is trying to grab the closest sometimes. Try going to settings and check "3G only" instead of "automatic roaming". This was happening to me and after turning roaming off, my phone stays on 3G.
via EVO.

Reboot: yes, multiple times
Cleared dalvik: yes but not cache (how do i clear the cache?)
Reinstall wireless tether: yes, i have both versions 2 & 3
Have i called sprint: no, the network issue started in indianapolis, i am currently in DC
Set roaming to sprint only, done and issues havent changed
the wifi issue is new to my being in dc though the network isue in indianapolis obviously made tethering rather difficult. Of course two different issues though a hell of a coincidence. Still in dc i get 4 bars. Sometimes none and that when i dont move in my hotel.
When i first arrived here I thought i would try and see if 4g was available. I received a weak signal and so thought to try the sprint hotspot with it. It didnt work. Switched off 4g and then tried again. Since that time tethering has not worked.
I've read aboit that wireless hack but there is a debate as to its usefullness, it caused boot issues on some roms which i don't want to tempt here.
I've not yet tried reflashing synergy.... I will at some point but am awaiting a call atm. I backed up my previous android, which was stock sprint 2.1 unrevoked.

Just don't restore the wimax partition from another phone. If you do say goodbye to your 4g.

Wife's evo running mikg 2.41, hacked Sprint hotspot still working great.
Sent from my unrooted OG Evo....
Back up apps using Titanium Backup if you want.
Flash a rooted Sense ROM, based on the Evo (this disqualifies MikG, Director's Cut, Synergy and other Sense 2.1 ROMs, because those are based on the Evo Shift (I've had issues with Shift-based ROMs not reprovisioning data). Update PRL, reboot.
Go into EPST (Dial ##3282#, Choose edit mode), enter your MSL code (download and use MSL Reader from the Market to get it), Data Profile, hit the menu button and choose restore. Just sit there, your phone will reboot and everything will go back to default. Let it reprovision, but when it says "Updating PRL" hit cancel.
Do a clean wipe, clean flashing of Synergy RLS1 or whatever ROM you want to. Hopefully that will work
@brit -ok.... Am diving into this tonight. First, i am using rom manager, and it offers me some roms to download. Will cyanogenmod 7.0.3 do the trick, does it satisfy your description of a "rooted sense rom based on evo"?
Ok, cleared dalvik and cache. Reinstalled synergy rc 2. Same deal. And now i see the 1x icon... So that happens in both indianapolis and dc (where i am for the week). Will try to dload cm via rom manager if i get 3g back...

Cyanogenmod is not a Sense rom, and technically it's a port. You don't wanna do that. Try downloading Sprint Lovers or a stock-based rom. I would think a 2.2 rom would be fine if you have to. If you can't find one through Rom Manager (people still use that?) download one from here, like the stock odexed 4.24 rom.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Get older Azrael or older Sprint Lovers or older Fresh or stock rooted Froyo. Search through development section for the ROM.
On a side note, I have had issues with ROM Manager and ClockworkMod so I made the switch to AmonRa, no ROM Manager. Learned how to wipe and flash ROMs for myself, and I have had no issues here.

problem resolved....
are there poeple still using rom manager - yup! people like me, who just jumped into flashing their phonesT. in my case i've been happy these past two years with a rooted 2.1
The problem was likley due to two things 1) i didnt wipe data before flashing, 2) the latest iconia update messed up wifi..
so, after wiping everything on the phone and reinstalling synergyi haven't seen the 1x icon appear as of yet. in addition... yeah, a few things look different and titanium no longer force closes... my phone seems better so far.
next i tried a few things on the iconia but i ended up having to do a factory reset (no big deal). Now tethering works on the evo and the iconia is able to connect to to it.
I went to barnes and noble to work and the iconia wouldnt conenct to wifi and thats when i started to suspect the iconia for half of this situation and as it turns out there is a known issue with iconia updates breaking wifi.
thanks to all who posted!!
