[Q] Is the ET4G worth rooting yet? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey everyone. I'm upgrading from my HTC Hero that I've had forever. I just ordered my Epic Touch 4G this morning since they are sold out everywhere. It should be here in a couple of days with UPS. How stable are the rooted kernels so far? Are the problems people are having worth rooting the phone or would it be better off stock until a known stable kernel/rom are working?

I am personally waiting until things are more stable and stock eg30 tar is released so there is a way to flash back to stock. Unless you absolutely need to back up your data or need wireless tether, I suggest waiting.

I'm waiting until a stock kernel is posted. Can't go without wifi or data. Also might wait till its a et4g compiled kernel and not from the galaxy SII international version.
The Evo3D Killer!!!

Sure it is. Just nice having root apps again.
No risk....no instability.

I am waiting until there is a way to recover if things gets screwed up. This phone is so fast unless you need wifi tether I would not root yet. I have had the hero and first epic which I loved both, but this phone is just amazing out of the box.

If you need to restore or back up data from a backup such as Titanium or MyBackup Pro then yes I would root.

This is why I rushed off into root. I haven't restored any data yet.
However, I regret my decision to rush in so quickly. I should have waited week or two before rushing in on the root.

Same reason I'm waiting.

I've returned one E4GT already after killing voice/data with root.
I'm waiting until there's a recoverable stock kernel before doing that again.

I went for it because of tethering needs, but its an iffy call at this point with no stock file.
Either way though, its just kickass the amount of devpower we have on this beast. I'm not accustomed to a device with such a list of all-star devs working on it. They'll have things rockin balls in no time flat.

Hello guys I was just wondering if this ACS root method, being the first root attempt is official? After reading through the xda threads for this root im seeing a lot of people seem to be having issues... Thanks!

My opinion and my opinion only:
I rooted my phone the second zedo posted his first kernel. Overall it was running good. At first I thought the issues people were having with loss of signal and data lock were due to the root but have since seen unrooted phones have the same issue. I however never got the LOS or data lockup.
Yesterday I returned my phone for a new one and have not rooted it. I still havent had LOS or data lockup but what I do notice is SIGNIFICANT battery improvement over being rooted.
Rooted battery at best was draining 6% an hour. More often was average of 1o% hour. Battery after battery calibration lasted 14 hours
Unrooted battery as of this minute is draining 2% an hour. This battery should be on par to last over 2 days but realistically will be over a day Im sure.
So my personally opinion is dont root till a) theres a way out and b) it doesnt require a kernel push. Something just doesnt seem right having to replace a kernel to achieve root. Never had to do that before and dont plan on doing it again.
Also, get a usb jig before rooting to avoid the triangle splash screen and counter.

Ok I am using Zedomax's V2, which is the overclockable Kernel with root and CWM. After flashing I did the Data reset which involves the ##...# code listed in the forums. My phone is rooted, overclocked, and running flawless. Most of the issues, other than the data loss(fixed with the data reset), are due to people doing things they shouldnt do... Like doing a factory reset in CWM without having a rom to flash afterward. This is what is causing the bootloops. If you follow the directions and dont get too ambitious you will be fine. That being said... if you are concerned then just wait until we get the stock tar so that if you do mess up while flashing anything you can flash right back to stock. Personally I believe most of the issues are user error.

I would wait until there is a way to go back to stock. Then u could try. In reality though we should be flashing a custom recovery and not a Complete kernel. Then for root u flash the su.zip. then you can flash a custom rom/kernel or stay stock with root.

Love Hate relationship. Return it?

I absolutely LOVE everything about this phone EXCEPT the LOS issues!!
I've only had it for 5 days now and experienced 3 LOS!
Since I'm still within 14 days, should I return it? thinking of getting the Photon instead.
From personal experience I'd say hang on to it and try flashing some of the newer releases to see if it doesn't improve the LOS issue.

I know you are asking because apparently you need the help of others to make up your mind... (sorry I am a smartass) But quick question what rom are you on cuz buddy LOS is a thing of the past up in herrrre... And that PHoton are you serious would you trade in your S clase Benz for a C Class Benz....
Root that sucka and flashing one of the stock EL29 roms or do the upgrage on your phone for the complete stock version... Oh yea and if you gonna ask where the roms are then maybe you should return your phone...LOL (smartass again)
exactly, flash something different (I'd recommend calks) and that issue goes away :O
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Doesn't even need to flash roms, root, and all that. Just OTA to EL29 and it should get rid of the issue.

I think almost everyone on this forum experienced frequent LOS until Sprint issued a firmware update that fixed it. I haven't experienced LOS since and it would happen to me several times a day. Update your firmware and you should see this go away. (my recommendation is to go with Calk's non-ICS firmware since it's probably the most stable at the moment)

Sounds like you need to get your phone replaced. The loss of service was fixed with ek02. el29 was the update after ek02 and it's the most recent update. You shouldn't be having any problems.
And you're flat out insane if you step down to a photon.

Yea, I would try flashing Calk's EL29. It should solve the LOS issues while improving the phone in mutliple other areas as well.
If that doesn't work, just take ot back to Sprint and replace it with another one. I would highly recommend staying with this phone though, not the Photon.

Exactly my thought... OP, as you are on EL29 you should not be experiencing LOS. Are you sure what you are experiencing is actually LOS, and not just poor Sprint service?
I'm not an expert flasher but the devs here have made it so simple I've been able to play around with several of the ICS releases but I always return to sfhub's stock-rooted EL29 and get amazing performance out of it.

[Q] G/F Friendly Set-up

Hey guys, I got a Nexus a few months ago and passed the Epic to the g/f (which I regret). Anyway, I have AOKP 35.1 on it and she is having issues. Maybe I forgot some Epic flashing routes.
The phone has EI22 baseband and I am looking to find the best g/f friendly rom (one where I can flash for her and have zero problems).
What do you think is the safest set up?
*Its been a while since I flashed on the Epic. I am on EI22 and I see EL30 is the newest build for GB. Do I need to use odin to get that, or can I just flash on top of EI22?
**I see FC09, is that the newest official?
Try cm7 or the peoples rom. The peoples is TW based it really is a matter of taste. I have my wife on CM7 which she loves she hates TW.

She prefers TW, and I was thinking the Peoples Rom. Where i get lost is all of the MTD, BML stuff. I dont remember having all of those options before.
What is the process to go to the Peoples from where I am? AOKP with EI22... I think EXT4 (is there a way to check?)

So far all issues were resolved with clean installs, V 6 Supercharger or turning off the Optimizer because of bad 4G due to Sprint. 3000 downloads strong, seems pretty solid to me but I may be biased.

She just gets nasty over some stupid crap sometimes. Plus, she travels a lot so I don't get much chance to work on the phone. Anyway, that was a year ago.
My lady likes to run whatever I am on. I find this useful for troubleshooting. If I can't recreate an issue on both, it's not a real issue. I made her sit on stock unrooted for a few days last month when she got a replacement phone from dropping it, and she couldn't wait to get back on an ICS rom. She made it through the random reboots on gb leaks, so anything out these days is easy for her to handle. It really depends on the individual. My techy ways have rubbed off on her over the years lol. She is smart enough to use her ipod (i know...) on wifi with a free messaging app to ask for help in the few situations that confuse her. She's a looker, does laundry, is a great mother, works, and cooks extremely well too! Needless to say we are getting married this July. I'm not sure exactly why I waited 14 years to ask her when I say it like that lol.

I cant agree with this strongly enough, though I may not have gone as far as saying no root.
Just remember, ANYTHING that goes wrong will be your fault, even if it has nothing to do with the phone itself (ie: tower down for upgrade, facebook update breaks the app, etc)

Are you rooting your device yet?

Will that interfere with any updates from at&t? Dare I say I might not root for now and leave as is.

I also would want to freeze the bloatware but does rooting the device interfere with updates from at&t for the multiview update? I usually immediately root/unlock bootloader and custom rom my new device. Never actually wanted to run stock like I do now due to the sgn2 features, including the s-pen.
I would assume that as long as you're using the stock rom then ota should still be available; but once you run ota you will probably have to re-root and also hope they don't patch whatever root methods we have currently.
I think I'm going to root soon so that I can play my NOVA3 with my PS3 controller... HDMI on the big screen using my Note 2 as a gaming system... You got to love it.

[Q] thinking about getting LG today

I have a question or two. I'm coming from the HTC Evo 4g and 3D. My 3D is set up with the pacmann 4.2.2 Jelly Bean rom and I love it, but no hot spot using sprint's hot spot or wifi tether. This doesn't work for me as I use the hot spot a lot so I use other roms when I need the hot spot, no big deal. I've been researching and rooting doesn't seem too bad on the LGOG and the roms sound pretty good. My concern is a working hot spot. I have to have it and I don't want to loose it when my Evo 3d is all set up for it when I need it. I've read a little bit on foxfi and wifi tether. One with and one without root? Foxfi doesn't work at all on my Evo pacmann rom. I just need confirmation that I'll be able to get one of these to work on the LG and that it has been done successfully. If not I'll hold off a little longer on the switch till the talented developers solve the issue. I can get my LGOG free basically so I'd love to jump on the deal since it looks like a really cool phone. I like the note2 as well but this would save me hundreds. While I'm at it, are the roms overclocking the LG at all or adding other goodies or are they mostly stock rooted roms minus bloat at this point? Oh and if I do get it should I update it or leave it alone if I want to root the phone. I'd hate for Best Buy to update it and block it.
Thanks, from a future LGOG guy......maybe.
Wifi tether works perfectly fine on the lgog after changing a setting. As far as none rooted tether I'm not sure what works. Updated or not you can root both old and new software now. I would recommend updating the software before root so that way you already have the jb modem.

I picked it up and checked for updates and JB didn't come up. I couldn't help myself though and rooted it within the first hour. I plan on putting a custom rom on it anyway. I'm guessing if I take an update it unroots the phone and I'd just have to reroot it?

Go to Google frameworks under all apps and clear data and force close then go to software update, this will force any update to the phone but sometimes it can take a few tries.

I actually have the S3 and Nexus 7 so I am not familiar with LG stuff. But on the S3 if you have stock recovery and are just rooted you can update still. You lose root but you can just reroot. We have a lot of developer support for the S3 so we can just use Odin and flash stock whenever or a one click stock rooted etc. I notice it is very scarce over here with developer support. I was contemplating getting this device if I could do a swap with my S3 so I was just checking out the scene.
