CWM backups dissapearing - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is not the first time this has happened. It better be the fricken last. I had my phone set up perfectly, and for safe measure, decided to make a nandroid. Then earlier today I was playing around and made a cwm backup before I started. I seriously messed up my phone (no recovery no nothing except odin) and odin'd cwm to nandroid back to where I was. Guess what? The backups were freaking gone. The last two that I actually wanted.
Has this ever happened to anyone else??

Had it happen once...no explanation. Now I check to see its there after backing up....fool me once.......

Same here, I now make 2 backups in a row, then copy both to pc, it does take longer, but now I only backup about once a week.

It could also be a bad sd card, and it mightve gotten corrupted and sent to the lost.dir folder

Checked and nothing was there. OEM SD card

Are you on the purpCWM 3.1.0.1? That gave me a few random errors. Since I started testing the ACS CWM4 based recovery, I haven't looked back...no issues, better shortcuts, and 3.1.0.1 nandroids will work on it.

I tried ACS but there's no odin image for it...so when I mess up I just go back to cwm. But yeah I even double checked and the backups were there! Then a few kernel flashes later they weren't

[Q] Just To Prove A Point, What DO You Prefer?

Which Recovery do YOU prefer?
I have a strong belief most people are going to say Amon Ra, but I just wonder, and I DO have a point to this.

I'm waiting to see this point. But if the 'point' of this is going to be amon_ra is better because more people like it, you're gona need more justification than that.
amon. i find it a lot cleaner than clockwork. and theres alot less roaming through the options
Amon... but that is all I have used since 1st week rooted
Kings GB Destroyed EVO
Now ill have to disagree with everyone on this one...I like CWM better for one reason...the advanced restore feature...i need it with the roms I switch so I can restore apps quicker than with mybackup or TB

Which is?
I use Ra btw.
ra for sure, ive been using it since day one. i never use cwm, i have a few times but don't like it.
I used AmonRA on my MyTouch 3G back in the day and liked it. When I first rooted it I used Clockwork for the ease of updating through Rom Manager app, but as I learned my way around rooting and flashing and Android for that matter I started using AmonRA and doing everything manually. I wish I would have never used Clockwork on my EVO, but when I first rooted it instead of doing it the long way I used Unrevoked3. I made a backup as soon as it was done and lost my RSA keys after running Clockwork for about a week and having to Nandroid restore. Been using AmonRA ever since. I am sure that Clockwork has fixed the Wimax issue, but I still prefer AmonRA because now I am used to it. I also like Amon options better and I know it is wiping my davlik cache when I tell it to.
My point is that I never used CWM and I want to know what it has and does that AR doesn't....
That's your point?
Amon, here, for whatever that's worth .... which, apparently, isn't much.

That's part of it....
Compatibility with Rom Manager is probably the biggest draw for Clockwork. Some people use RM religiously. I've never used it, because it reminds me of some bad experiences I've had flashing a PC BIOS with a Windows app. I'm sure it works fine, but I'm old fashioned, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Also, AR was the first to backup RSA keys. I've never lost mine but I've never looked back.

Restoring apps is just a part of flashing, this isn't a great selling point. I've had problems with CWM not working with certain rom's and all around RA is just cleaner and to the point. To each their own I guess but you are the minority here my friend.
Definitely RA!

[Q] MTD???

what is the big ordeal about using MTD? since it has so many problems, and takes so many steps with so much effort to make anything happen.
*not trying to insult anyone - to be on record*
The partition sizes can be changed, needed for official cm, ics may be too big for our /system right now.
sent from my cm7 touchwiz 4.5-ed epic
So u can adjust the size of the partitions? Doesn't that affect system function files in a negative way? Don't they need so much space for processing?

When I have a chance, I will post different threads that show problems being on mtd. I'm just trying to completely understand this new animal.

The only problem with Legendary on MTD is not being to use ROM Manager anymore or boot to recovery from the power menu....that's it.

I haven't heard of any issues with MTD. Issues with people making mistakes converting? Yes. Issues with people making mistakes trying to convert back? Yes. Issues with people having restored data from rfs instead of starting fresh like they should? Yes. The list goes on. There's nothing wrong with "MTD".
I'm running the current cm7 nightly MTD and my phone has never run smoother or more stable (minus hq video recording, which is just an issue within the rom and has nothing to do with the fs)

Yep that was my point. I have seen no issues with legendary that I manually converted over to mtd... most of the problems associated with mtd were merely user error

Ok..I see, very interesting. I'm going to have to do some very serious studying on mtd before I decide to convert. Just to become very familiar with it. Thankyou again guys for the info. I most appreciate it.

Yeah me and Flats have been on this whole MTD, I converted my own backup also and just made a flashable zip instead. Legendary MTD is well... LEGENDARY!!!!
I have been on thunderhawk 3.3 manually converted to mtd for a few days now and see no down side to switching besides the known rom manager/reboot recovery not working properly. I gained 191mb of extra space and have not had any issues.
Edit: and apparently an issue with installing large apps from the market without some tweaking...

Help with phone please

OK guys I was on FB17. I wanted to flash the deodexed version so I flashed the temp touch recovery. I went to wipe data and it froze. I held power down and the phone wouldn't go past the black samsung galaxy SII screen. So I went into download mode to Odin el29. It hangs on data.img everytime. I tried like 8 times( I Odin all the time and never had one fail before) so then I try the el29 that doesn't wipe data. It flashes fine but the phone boots into stock recovery and just gives errors saying data directory does not exist. How can I fix this? Sounds like my data partition is messed up and thats why Odin hangs on data.img

Yeah, that's what happened to me. I had to take it in to a Sprint repair center, and even they couldn't fix it. I had to have mine swapped for a new one. Seems like the Touch CWM is borking data partitions.

This sucks. I even tried to use repartition with a pit file and it still hangs on data.img. I've never had this happen before. Like I said I've Odin with this phone like ten times and never had one fail.

Doesn't seem to happen to everyone, but everyone that I've talked to today that has bricked their phone has used CWM Touch right before doing so.

[Q] 4G Broken!.... What gives???

Im currently running cm9b0 with the phantom vm fix no custom kernel, everything was running awesome but for some reason I can't lock on to 4G anymore. Just says "disconnected" tried flashing b0 and gaaps with a cache/dalvik wipe but still the same? anyone have an idea on what to try next? would like to avoid a full wipe since everything is just the way I like it. Once in a while I shut data off to save battery but thats all on and 3G works fine, Even toggled airplane mode on and off a couple time with no change. Any help is much appreciated
I'm running CM9b1 and haven't been able to get a 4G lock yet. I have good 4g at the house, but it just scans and never finds the network.
Edit: Played with the 4g toggles for about 15 minutes and then finally got a notification in the status bar followed by a 4G tower connect. It stayed connected for just under 2 minutes, disconnected itself, and I haven't been able to get it to connect since.
Could it possibly be my modem?
I've restored old nandroids and still the same, could it be my hardware out maybe my carrier? I'm at a loss

Your best bet is to odin stock EL30 tar firmware and see if it works there. If it does then move forward from there checking it each step. This happened to me once before.

[Q] Any suggestion on a e4gt rom that DOES NOT require a wipe

i did a search but nothing useful popped up, i saw where the Motorola Photon 4G has a rom called the kitchen sink, that doesnt make you wipe, allowing you to keep all your data but gives you the benefits of a rom. thanks
If your just stock el29 rooted. just flash calks 3.0, im sure blazer would work to.but i did calks. I flashed back to stock a few nights ago and decided to flash calks real quick to real quick.everything is fine here. No data loss or anything. Any rom should work from stock rooted, just its healthy to clear data and what not when going between roms.

Be sure you read everything! Do not be impatient or you WILL brick your phone. Mobile Odin will become your best friend and is well worth a few bucks.
Should you lose your data, you will learn that its really not that bad. After switching to aokp I never restored my apps or data but instead just re-downloaded the apps I wanted. Never felt any regret.

Wiping is good, it keeps the flies away and people won't avoid you, besides who wants to walk around with messy pants all day. Always wipe.
Its good for you and for your phone.
