Yes same problem with me also...i've downloaded 6times but after rebooting it is saying "could not update"

I also have this problem.
I rooted my Arc yesterday, then updated to 2.3.3, but now I cannot update to newer versions via WiFi or OTA, it just gives me a message saying 'you must use a computer to update your phone'.
If I do as it says will this damage the phones firmware, unroot my phone or just simply work???
Help plz???

Hellooo, its mentioned many times in the General section of the Arc forum that the Generic.181 is not used for OTA to .368
You must flash either HK.181 or Generic_UK.184 otherwise it will not work...

and then after you flash you loos every thing just perfect I'm beginning to think rooting my phone was a waist of time .

Look at threads in general section, we now have Root for 2.3.4

Downgrade to the UK rom 2.3.2 with Flashtool -> Gingerbreak -> OTA update via WiFi ( as in some coutries UK rom restricts Data (2g/3g) connection untill the correctconfig is obtained.. But if you keep it running on WiFi they will selv-download )
And it's not a waste of time.. i've had my Arc for just some hours out of the box and did this in halv an hour.. If you use Alternative Messaging app, Homescreen app and contacts app... You can backup the needed things.. So no problem at all reflashing.. just reflash and restore
Have fun with your FreeToBePhone!

wait for a while...
i wait..and today i was able to update 2.3.4 (build number .283)
over OTA..and root remain..
just to say...
before OTA i had 2.3.3 (.145)...i was downgrade to 2.3.2 to gain root and OTA...
after few day again OTA (not downgrade) and here i am

Ok I too followed the guide, I'm rooted on 2.3.2 (.181). From my research it looks like I used the wrong file when I flashed the phone. Can someone please send me the link to the correct file?

Did you try
Edit: gave the most possible bad advise due to misreading.
Other way is to download seus, Sony Ericsson update service, and update through that, but for sure you lose your root rights than.
Further on all your answers will be here on the first page, so you could have done some reading first, than you would have found out asking this question is a bit ought...

Settings/about phone/
Software update, your phone will check if there is an update available.
With the ota, over the air, update you have a chance you still have a rooted phone.

OTA for unlocked bootloaders will brick your phone. There is a fix for that now though.
Be careful of the advice you give.
You are right, I didn't read that, my apologise!!

You have to install flashTool 0.2.9.1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
Then get the updated firmware 3.0.1.A.0.145 or 146 https://rapidshare.com/files/4055154....146_Global.7z. You can keep your settings (option i FlashTool).
Then get the rootexperia.zip from Bin4ry http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130639 and flash it via recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14903452&postcount=169
Hope this helps
Just flash a 2.3.3 ROM (preferably rooted) with fastboot. Look in the Development section for a ROM. Its fairly easy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044201
There lots of ROMs and a very good tutorial how to flash using fastboot.
very thanks i try
i have tray and work. Very thanks

[Q] Think I need help with root after re-locking

Hi.
I've just spent an age reading posts but they are all getting jumbled up in my head so I'm asking for a bit of help whilst I wait for the brain-ache to subside
I've tried to update my Arc to 2.3.3 and keep it rooted following the instructions in the Namaste guide.
This is what I've done:-
1, First I re-locked my bootloader
2, then I flashed back to 181 generic firmware using flashtool
3, then I rooted using gingerbreak and installed titanium backup to check root status
4, I ran OTA update and identified update was available but needed PC Companion.
5, connected phone to PC companion and ran updater which downloaded new ROM and installed (2.3.3)
6, started phone and installed Titanium backup again but this time root access failed.
I've tried this twice and got the same result. Is it me or is this a known issue?
Any help will be gratefully received.
Thanks, Phil.
To retain root ,flash DooMKernel after updating .368 check this link below.

Yes.. As you had a locked bootloader you could simply flash DoomLord's kernel .. Its very nice.. pre rooted, overclocking etc..
What you were trying to do is rooting on a locked bootloader.. The version 181 you flashed seems not to have Over The Air (OTA) update available..
When you update with SEUS it flashes the whole ROM cleanly that's what happened so you lost root..
The OTA update only updates the files which were changed in the new firmware.. So you retain root..
Unless you have a good reason to NOT flash a custom kernel (as you are already unlocked i don't see a good reason ) you will have to find a 181 firmware which has it available OTA (look in threads with instructions which have done it successfully).. Should be in the development area..
Thanks for the advice guys
I tried the same process a third time before I'd seen your replies and the OTA offered an upgrade (about45mb) so I went ahead and installed it. Now, thankfully, I have 2.3.3 and root! Woohoo!
I am interested in a custom kernel though so I'm going to have a butchers at doomlords thread.
Thanks once again, and if anyone reads this thread whilst looking for a solution to a similar problem I can suggest trying the same thing a few times before you give up ;-)
not quite there yet...
...just ran OTA update check and it's directing me to do an update via PC Companion again grrr!
This is to add xLoud, stereo recording, landscape homescreen etc
So how do I get this update and remain rooted with a re-locked bootloader? Should I do the full ROM update and then flash a kernel?
Thanks.
U could just flash FW 4.0.A.2.368 by flashtool, then flash doomkernel and u will retain root back.

This will only work when bootloader is unlocked!
@thintin
Since you have relocked your bootloader you can follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16793764
it worked for me, hope it works out for you

Take a look at this link, I helped out another fellow xda member in the same spot as you. His phone wouldn't detect hos simcard after rooting the same way you did. It might be a baseband issue cuz the rooting image is a bit old (afaik the first FW build for our play).
Just follow the step by step guide and you should soon be enjoying the newest FW rooted.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17747422&postcount=45
Link to flashtool. Make sure you use the beta version (0.2.9.1) wich is the one that supports our play.

Small guide on how to use flashtool:

Regards Dousan...
Check your BaseBand version under settings-->About Phone (If it is unknown or blank), u need to fresh flash your PLAY with a clean ROM (Suggest Generic 2.3.2 UK).
Check your SIM again and the BaseBand.
If u need to ROOT your PLAY, just use GingerBreak 1.2 when still in 2.3.2. U can use RootChecker to check if it is successfully rooted. Update to the latest version OTA by WiFi.

This is also a way to go about it . Just one thing to ad: You'll need to relock the bootloader before updating OTA or yuo'll brick your phone
Afaik the newest FW is not out via OTA yet (4.0.1.0.283 - 2.3.4), it's the first one with xLoud (4.0.A.2.368 - 2.3.3).

[Q] xperia s new firmware official update .55 problem

greetings ,
i have an Xperia s phone with the firmware 6.1.A.2.50 rooted with root many droids (bin4ry)
software update in my phone showed that there is new update available...
i downloaded the new update...but it always fails to update..
is it cuz it's rooted??
should I unroot my device so that i can update...???
im a bit confused :silly:
You can flash stock 6.1.A.2.50 again and then try to update, it should work then. Rooting actually doesn't affect update via PCC or SUS, as far as i know.
But yes if the bootloader is unlocked then you won't be able to update as well. So your device bootloader unlocked or locked?
One more thing you should remember the new update 0.55 is not easily rootable. The method which worked for 0.50 and 0.45 won't work on 0.55
Lastly the new update 0.55 doesn't bring anything special. I tried and then went back to 0.50 again. Still it's your call.
Sv: [Q] xperia s new firmware official update .55 problem
Funny thoug, that Sony claim to be open for external development and for eg. XDA, and at the same time Sony make an effort to secure that you can't root every time they release new firmware...
Sent from my phone using xda premium
:good: thanks guys,im a newbie here..i dunno the answer your question...
i bought the new device and all i did is rooted via Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v18...i dunno if it unlocks the bootlloader...
i rooted my device though it wasn't useful to me rather than before rooting cuz i dunno how to use the maximum before rooting..
i heard that the firmware is better for the RAM and i have a wireless problem (it freezes n dysfunction)..
thanks a lot again auni
anyway i fixed it ma self....just used the stupid pc companion and it worked though it took some time to download the update..
thanx XDA

Cannot verify update

I'm currently on stock. 757 firmware and before two days I had a notification about updating to the latest 14.4.108 firmware. Problem is that no matter if I download it through WiFi or 3g, It kept showing that "cannot verify update ", and nothing happens. Anyone else has this? Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated...

I have the same problem.
And also I have problem to update it with PC companion software.
I have no idea what next...
Same here via OTA, maybe it`s because of root.....
But i did the update with PCC without problems - and nothing was wiped!
Root is not the problem. Mine is not rooted but still the problem insists. Even pc companion couldn't update the device. WTF?
Plus, I even factory reseted but nothing changed...
Is your bootloader unlocked?
Bootloader is locked. Just have root.

locked bootloader , no root at all
I had the same problem with OTA.
PcCompanion did update but my Z1c crashed now often.
So I flashed the ftf with flashtool and this time it worked perfect.
I came from .757, rooted and locked bootloader.
Now rooted again with Easy Root Tool v8
So there is no way to get ota or companion to work properly? Only way out is flashtool and ftf file?
Well I try PC companion app on other computer and it did update without problems.
I can see the difference in OS (Windows 7 vs. Windows 8) and installed ADB drivers on not working computer.
u got recovery? if yes u can't update by OTA because of changed bootloader
http://www.sonymobile.com/pl/tools/update-service/ this is better for official updates but i think u will need flash ftf
