Post your speedtest results - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm getting very slow network speeds at the moment - perhaps Sprint is working on the network at the same moment I bought this phone. I just switched from an EVO 3D this afternoon.
Using speedtest.net - I'm consistently getting about
220kbps down 419kbps up on 3G
I can't connect reliably to 4G

how many bars?

a little yea.. if you have like 1-2 bars your speeds will suffer
---------- Post added at 05:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:54 PM ----------
i have 3-4 bars and I get 614/576 (note: i removed my proxy settings 0.0.0.0, etc)
---------- Post added at 06:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:58 PM ----------
i get different results based on the test server.. might want to try a few different servers

Bars are misleading. And so is SpeedTest.net App. Not the most accurate.
Try TestMy.net as well. I've always noticed more consistent results.
I'm getting pretty much identical speeds on my E.T. as I did my Photon, and IT always showed full bars in my townhouse, where as my E.T. is showing 3-5 randomly. YMMV

On 3G?!?! I need to come to your hood. According to Speed test, I get .36mb down & .02 up. I haven't hit your speeds on 4g or wifi either for that matter. You must have your own tower...

Here's mine near San Francisco, California.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-...I/AAAAAAAAACg/arjP2qKVMzY/s400/11%2520-%25201 .jpg on 4g not 3g. Ill try a couple more tests when i get back home tomorrow for consistency

From the top down:
home 3g
home 3g
10 miles away 4g
10 miles away 4g
10 miles away 3g
Home Wifi

This is why I'm considering returning it - this is right smack in the middle of the supposed best coverage area in my city. I had 5 bars when I did the test, it fell to 4 right when I took the screenshot.

how do u get that much i cant ever go up 3mbs and it lags
i live in sf too

Boost mobile, Virgin Mobile, Straight talk all use sprint 3g network... this is why the 3g has taken a hit in the last year or so.. I remember getting 2-3mb reliably on 3g a couple years ago.. now it's usually around 300-500kb a sec. .. the wimax network which is a bit inconsistent is the only saving grace for speed in my area.. around 5-6mbps which isn't blazing of course but works great if I'm not using it while driving.

From 4G; SoCal in Huntington Beach

I had an Epic before getting the GS2 and I noticed my 3G speeds took a straight nosedive. I was really looking forward to this phone, but something just seems fishy, as if the modem on it is not quite working yet.
Granted, I was on an experimental modem (EH17 on ERA Hurricane Rom), but I definitely remember the 3G speeds being a hell of a lot better than on my GS2. I can't even reliably browse the app market, because I would get timeout errors.
I just ran my speedtest and even with 5 solid bars of signal I am only getting 130 up and 80 down. Richmond VA 23221 area.
This just plain sucks

Not bad for a Sunday afternoon on L.A. server...

For me it depends on where I am at. They recently repaired the tower closest to my work so I have been averaging around 2 Mbs up at work. At home I average around 150 Kbs up, almost unusable.

I'm lucky to get 500kbps down and 100kbps up on Sprint, most times its 2-3 know, that's why I run a Verizon prl. I don't know how they get away with calling those speeds 3g when any other provider in town gets at least 1mb down.
sent from my locked EVO via tapatalk
IT ALL DEPENDS ON TOWER TOWER TOWER! It is limited BY THAT ONE TOWER! it has nothing to do with city *unless the city like has NO fiber or something* If there is good fiber in the city, and depending on the area/tower you're on. you can get 2+M down and 1M up.. I get this on a normal basis. because my city has fiber. lol! But They REALLY need a better 4G network here. on an average, I get 6-8M down and 1.5up on 4G. BUT GUESS WHAT! EVEN ON 4G, I HAVE SEEN IT GET LESS THAN 3G SPEEDS LIKE CHICAGO! All depends on area, amount of people, and technology in that area.
NOW I WISH I WOULD STOP SEEING THREADS LIKE THIS! omg! lmao. I find it funny that people are like, "omg i'm getting 400kbs" lol. are you even connected to a sprint tower? that's a SPRINT OWNED tower!
OH YEAH, FORGOT TO ADD. WHEN LOOKING AT RATE OF DOWNLOAD.. YOU MUST ALSO LOOK AT YOUR PING! TIME IT TAKES FOR YOUR PHONE TO TALK TO THE SERVER. PING HAS A DIRECT RATIO with how many bars you have and rate of the connection at that exact tower.
My town must have no fiber at all then because it doesn't matter what sprint tower I connect to within a 30 mile radius I get the speeds I posted earlier, early morning mid day middle of the night all the same. My ping times are fairly low usually below 500ms. So maybe you should help sprint out around here, because in the same locations I can use a Verizon prl and have a lower signal and higher ping and still pull 1-3mbs. I'm doubtful its towers I think its sub par equipment running the towers.
sent from my locked EVO via tapatalk
500 ms ISN'T LOW! wow! 50 is low. 500 isn't. goto a sprint store near you and check another android phone to make sure it isn't your phone or something. Then again, if you're not near a city. what you got is likely what you're going to get.
Well I'm in a city, and actually this EVO does better than the 4 epics I went thru. I was lucky with them to get 1000ms ping. Now I can say the areas I been in that have 4G are ok, but officially we aren't suppose to have it here yet. No place in Oklahoma does for that matter. Sprint is either having trouble with the majority of their towers here or something. Just about every other provider here like tmobile, ATT, cricket, and us cellular all have faster data, I'm not trying to say sprint is bad or throw them under a bus just stating how my experience has been. With going thru 4 epics all of which had the same slow data speeds, when they could actually get data, and now an EVO I don't see how I could get all of them to have the same slow speeds in various areas of town. Just my experiences.
Edit: just ran some speed tests and ping of the 4 I ran was 110-140ms, down average was around 600kbps upload was average 200kbps. That's all with a full (pegged) signal from a sprint tower.
who cares what this says anyways
Sprint just got done boosting towers in oklahoma. I stated the plan for sprints tower plan in another thread ( 3g issues) . Goodbye iden and now instead of many small cellsites . They are moving towers into one cell site and a frequency from 800 mhz to 2.5 ghz in one cell site
But i average 1.2 - 2.0 mbps in hotsprings arkansas
Miami.

[Q] Best ROM/Kernel/Modem Combinations?

There has been discussion, but has anyone found the magic formula? I know many people say the modem is completely independent of the ROM. But others have made the argument that data speeds are married to both.
So, what is your ROM/Kernel/Modem combination and data speeds as well as your location?
I'm in North San Diego County on AOKP B34 ROM, FD24 KERNEL, and FD19 modem. This is not a very good marriage. But Sprint 3G speeds in San Diego suck, have sucked, and probably will suck for the immediate future. Best DL speeds have been 800 kb/s and uploads at around 200 kb/s.
Modems work different for every phone..so there is no "magic combination" sorry =(

Its probably a PA thing. Sprint has been horrible in San Diego. Every metro area has 4G except San Diego. But even AT&T 3G is 10 times faster than Sprints 3G.
I had unlimited plan and left AT&T because they throttled me. But, even when they throttled me, it was faster than Sprint.

Go figure! It makes no sense at all not to have cities with high pop densities without 4G (or well serviced 3G). Yet, Sprint finds a way to avoid the common sense virus.

Wow that's not good. About how fast when you do get 4g and how slow is edge?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
I've never actually speed tested, but 4g is fast enough to surf and email to your liking, while with edge your loading a page, sitting down able to look around a bit and then its finish loading. So yes, I dread whenever I get edge. However, I have no idea how fast Sprint speeds are.
San Francisco has one of the worst reception areas for almost all carriers. Data connection always drops too in my past experience and I use to frequent SF a lot. AT&T was by far the worst in the bay area. back with G2, I was maybe getting 5mbps around L.A. but SF was about 2mbps. upload 1mbps in both region. Tmobile have horrible upload speed but, in my experience, best download speed.
For a cellphone, I don't need upload speed much so I'm happy with the faster DL speed. too much ping to game and stuff with it.

Sprint 3g right now is about the same. I wait a little bit and then the page will start to slowly show bits and pieces and then its done. With wimax on my evolution 3d pages loads instantly. 3g right now is averaging .4mbps. Earlier at a friends house in south San Jose I was getting .2mbps. I was trying to download 1.2mb app and it took about a minute. So if I were to dl a larger file I'd be in trouble.

WWell I just switched and now I'm kinda regretting it. On my way home I was testing my speed and was getting about 7-11mbps using speedtest app so I was really excited....til i got home. In my home in San Jose I can barely get a signal and I'm constantly going on Edge. I live in a 2 story home with regular drywall walls. Edge for me is way worse as I'm only getting .02 - .04 mbps and web browsing is non existent. If I open up maps, I get gps lock but the map is just grid and it stays like that for a long time. Eventually map will show up but once I zoom out I get grids again. Texting takes forever to send. Phone calls will sometimes cut in and out. Majority of the time I get 1 bar and sometimes zero. Even at 3 bars edge is awful. My bed is by the window so I guess the area were I live just sucks. I may just have to go back to my evo 3d which I was getting good wimax and phone signal.

From playing around past several days, it's all around the pacific northwest, Oregon, Washington, etc.
My guess is they're upgrading towers for LTE. 3G speeds are still the same though, that is to say, beyond belief terrible. But 4G has gone nuts. I might try to find a Sprint store in the area and check to see if LTE is live yet.

Good to know that even if for a moment, I will have LTE

Take this with a grain of salt, but I know a well ranked agent who is pretty close with a certain "Tiffany" who some of you may have heard of, and supposedly the Phila switch is going to be flipped sometime in the third week of August. Don't get your hopes too high because there are bound to be hiccups along the way, but I'm sure I'll hear more as we move into August. CANT WAIT!!!
Edit: Just in time for shared everything plans lol.. At least it's going to be optional.
How will I be able to tell if I have LTE active will it say it next to the 4G icon?

Yes it will show LTE by the signal strength in status bar.

well i was never technically on 4g down here but i went from about 6-8mbps to 20 mbps
they turned it on from miami north to west palm and I am in the most northern part so im assuming the fort lauderdale - miami area probably has the better speeds than i do here, but it is alot faster

Same here I'm in Philadelphia. Don't quite get why at&t skipped us in the first deployment.

Metro areas that had "sufficient" 3G coverage were automatically skipped through the first and sometimes second pass of LTE implementation.
Squeakiest wheels got the grease first, is what I've heard and read.
Incidentally, don't be too upset about this, as LTE (from personal experience) has not been all that great anyway. I've been in Chi, Miami/Ft.Laud, DC and Baltimore and only in one of those markets (frigging Baltimore of all places!!) was I getting better than 11Mbps down and better than 6Mbps up (i got 17Mbps down, 10Mbps up). Both DC and Miami/Ft.Laud were marginally slower than my home WiFi which is typically around 10Mbps down and 6Mbps up, and Chicago was absolutely pathetic all three times I've been there since Feb, coming in roughly on par with Philly-area HSPA+/4G.
Incidentally, my experience has been with this phone as well as my Note i717, both top-end devices.
Plus, remember that even a strong LTE signal (let alone a weak one, god forbid....) will drain the piss out of your battery, a heck of a lot quicker than good old fashioned HSPA+.
Just my $.02.
