Hi guys,
On the Samsung Wave there is a feature called T9 Trace, which basically offers Swype gestures with the qwertz (German) AND the numeric keypad.
In Galaxy S2 there is no Swype for the numeric keypad, but I am using this now for nearly a year and would not like to miss it.
Is there a way/an app to have the numeric keypad WITH the Swype feature on the Galaxy S2 (like T9 Trace in Samsung Wave)?
Thank you in advance.
Nobody knows a keyboard app with numeric layout AND Swype/T9 Trace for the Galaxy S2? Bad news. :-/
I read your message yesterday but i don't get what you're missing with swype. If you need a numeric keypad with Swype just swype from the swype button (bottom left) to the letter F (aka number 5).
That is what we are looking for: Swype with numeric keypad.

It is much faster and comfortable to text.
Right, thats actually a layout called "3x4 layout"
And i'm very sorry i don't know if this exists. Perhaps you can find alternatives that offer that. GoKeyboard, SlideIt.
I dont know which offers this, but have a look yourself now that you know the name of the layout.
Thanks. I searched now for two days and installed a lot of keyboard programmes, but really none of them offered a 3x4 layout PLUS Swype.
Either it was 3x4 or it had Swype on qwertz/qwerty.
That really sucks. :-/
Hey, did you manage to find T9 Trace APK anywhere? or anything similar?
I also make use of the T9 keyboard and would love to be able to swype on it instead of tapping. Let me know if you managed to find something to that effect.

Yeah, I do only use the 3x4 layout and hate tapping, as it is much slower than sliding on it. I really miss "T9 Trace" from Bada.
Unfortunately, I have not found a solution/keyboard app, that supports that technique.
Did anyone find a solution for that problem in the meantime?
For all interested: I found a solution (app) for our problem. Ultra Keyboard from Binary Bulge has got Swype in 3 x 4/numeric keypad layout.
It is still not as good as the T9 Trace on Samsung Wave, bu I am really happy about this.

Hi,
I was searching for the solution for he same problem. I came acress your post.
I was also using Samsung Wave 2 phone. T9 3x4 keypad was so easy to use. Now I have switched to Galaxy S3.
This basic feature is missing in most advanced phones.
In Bada the toggling(Turn On & Off) between T9 dictionary is so convenient in 3x4 keypad itself.
But android is missing that feature. We have to go insite the settings and turn on or off the dictionary. And also i could not find the swype in 3x4 kaypad.
Thanks for your post. you were following it for almost more than a year for the solution

Yeah, I am even still checking out new ways, because Ultra Keyboard is working good for now, but the T9 Trace thing for Wave was slightly faster and more comfortable.
A guy at the Atrix forum told me the TouchPal keyboard app would do the same, but there was a misunderstandig, because I tested it and it does NOT have this feature.
So, still Ultra Keyboard is the only one. Btw, you can toggle it directly in the Ultra Keyboard with the button "TAP". You do not have to change it in the settings. Only dictionary changing is in settings, but with Ultra you can change the menu line (the order) above the keypad, so that you have a button directly for languages. It is not as fast as in the Wave models, but it is only two clicks instead of one.
If you need help, I can provide a screenshot.

That is how I set up the keyboard app with book (for languages) on the left side and smiley (for smileys obviously) on the right side. So, everything is withing one's click reach.

Therefore I'm struggling to text precisely.
Anybody could recommend a keyboard that is:
- the most precise for fat fingers
- does the job the old input way(no swype, or wierd layouts)
- doesn't take 99% of the screen.
- no text prediction help.
I was using swiftkey so far, and it slowly learns my "style", but still I have to all the time choose the right word if I mistype something.
I know I might ask a lot, but all I need really just an accurate keyboard!
Thanks for any suggestion!
I am using Scandinavian Keyboard ( Download from Market ) and using HTC Skin for it ( You can choose it when you have Installed Scandinavian Keyboard )..... and those letters are pretty damn big

Yeah, but if you go to "Settings > Locale and text > Scandinavian Keyboard > Skin" and choose HTC.... you will get different skin and those letters are a little bigger, work perfect for me
But that suppose to be the same, only different skin. In that case the points you push are not changed at all!
Use a knife and sharpen those.
Sorry, had to.
How about "Thumb Keyboard" from market...in Landscape-Mode it could be the right one for you?!
...and now (after seeing you fingerfoto) i have to order a couple of Hot-Dogs because my stomach is making some strange noise!
Lol cheers guys, yeah those sausages are juicy sweet.
I got a heads up on thumb keyboard, but it has also wierd layout, I've just tried it today!
Sharpening fingers is not mad, it just messes up the display with blood.
So that's it, no more recommendations?

I'll check it out tho, cheers.
It has extensive config options, I disable 90% of them (T9, auto spaces and stuff... it slows me down)
I really cant live without this kb.
Noo, unfortunately compact querty has problems with my language, and without prediction it slows down my typing
I came across a thumbs keyboards the other day but the name alludes me it looked quite good though

You can try typing in the fat finger in the iTunes store...this keyboard would be perfect for you, but you would have to check with the developers to see if it can be installed on the program you are having difficulty with.
Good luck,

RTL issue
An annoying issue which will probably send me looking for another keyboard soon:
Parentheses appear backwards when typed in RTL box.
Repro steps:
1. When i type something in Hebrew it RTLs the input box (caret moves to the right edge, as it should)
2. now if i type parentheses they appear backwards
To any developers out there:
I'd like to place a request for someone (if possible) to develop this mod. This has been a fairly common complaint among many users that are new to ICS. The stock Messaging app for ICS has disabled the Return key for almost every keyboard (stock and 3rd party) to allow users to skip a line and keep typing underneath. I can personally attest to this being an issue that it is something many of us have gotten very used to in Gingerbread and we are finding it very uncomfortable to cope without it. If it is possible to develop such a mod (modify the Messaging app perhaps?), I am sure that many of us here at XDA and beyond would highly appreciate it and be thankful for your work. Any comments from users and developers greatly encouraged. Thank this post if you'd like to see this developed.

Bumping this
So I decompiled the Mms.apk (Messaging App) and found the relevant XML document that defines the compose activity (res/layout/compose_message_activity.xml) which contains the following:
<EditText
android:textSize="16.0sp"
android:textColor="@android:color/black"
android:layout_gravity="bottom"
android:id="@id/embedded_text_editor"
android:nextFocusRight="@id/send_button"
android:layout_width="0.0dip"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_marginLeft="8.0dip"
android:minHeight="@dimen/input_text_height"
android:hint="@string/type_to_compose_text_enter_to_send"
android:maxLines="3"
android:capitalize="sentences"
android:autoText="true"
android:layout_weight="1.0"
android:inputType="textCapSentences|textAutoCorrect|textMultiLine|textShortMessage"
android:imeOptions="actionSend|flagNoEnterAction"
/>
Click to collapse
I changed the inputType to remove "textShortMessage", and the imeOptions to remove "actionSend". While this does bring back the enter key:
The enter key has no effect. Interestingly, if you press enter while typing a misspelled word, it will insert the correct word, but it will NOT insert a new line. Any other devs have any ideas? I'm fairly certain that this should work as-is, but there seems to be something else preventing the insertion of a newline character.
BUMP because this is important.

I think in Swiftkey that return key is just a workaround key not the default. It becomes the default in any other app however just like the stock keyboard.

This is correct. Swiftkey will work with showing the return key by default in all those apps...as will the stock keyboard as well. The issue here comes when you use the stock Messaging app that comes in ICS. No matter what keyboard you use, it has the note to disable the default return key for the keyboard that you're using. Swiftkey has a nice workaround that let you select the return key as an alternative key but this is the only keyboard known to work this way. What we're trying to do is to get every other keyboard including the Swiftkey to show the return key by default using the stock messaging app.
Bumping this
Bumping again
Bump away, this deserves attention.
Are there any known solutions?
I'm using the TouchPal swype-like keyboard, and it shows a 'return' key even in the Messenger app - but it doesn't insert the CR/LF (it only accepts current suggestion).
OK guys, I found an excellent temporary workaround for this issue:
SlideIt Keyboard with ICS Skin looks and acts almost exactly like the stock keyboard and has the added ability of "Swyping" and most importantly...the return key always shown by default and works properly even in the stock messaging app. It's like having all the best keyboard features packed into one. I highly recommend it. There is also a free version of this keyboard on the market that offers a 15-day trial. Check it out.
Bumping this. I want to be able to use the STOCK keyboard. Not some third party one that looks like the stock keyboard. I would love to be able to help edit the Mms.apk to figure this out. Tomorrow, I'm going to decomple the Mms.apk, and take a look myself. I'll report back late tomorrow.

Please be advised, whether accidental or intentional, this MMS.apk has the Return key working as we want it. Might want to take a look at that one to compare what is different from stock. See post at bottom: Here
I was just floored when I got my gn and it didn't have an enter key!
After figuring that there was no easy solution I stumbled on easy keyboard. And with the right configuration you can get your enter key back as well as keeping the smile button when you hold it down (affectively reversing the ics default).
Easy solution for $2.50. You can try the free version but I couldn't stand it without a dictionary.
It is a very good keyboard and comes cheaper than most.

My wife has one for her iPhone asnd I was wondering if anyone knew of one for the Galaxy. I would need it all the time but business trips with tons of emails wild be a lot easier with a keyboard
I highly recommend the swype keyboard built into the default Samsung keyboard. It takes like 1 min to learn. Trust me I used to BBM all day long and this is by far the easiest and fastest touch input method I've ever used, I can easily type 3-4 times faster than I used to even with physical kb. You can enable it in the input options under the Samsung keyboard it's called 'continuous input'.

I too would recommend a different keyboard than stock, but in my case, SwiftKey is better as I like to multi touch type, and swype is pretty unforgiving if you tap more than one spot at a time.
Since purchasing the gs iii, according to the stats, it has fixed over 2.5k of my typos!
I am a very heavy email user (corporate exchange and 3 of my own accounts as well).

If you like to "peck" then you'll like Swiftkey more.... if you want to retrain yourself to swype -- Swype is awesome. I've got both installed, and I can easily type faster with EITHER compared to the default keyboard. I really like swype, but I find it more natural to PECK at the keyboard so right now I'm using Swiftkey

I absolutely love Swype, but I have to say that something is super buggy in this latest version (or at least for the S3). Every time I type something wrong, or it gets the prediction wrong, if I try to tap the backspace to delete one letter at a time it jumps all over the place and starts deleting random parts of my sentence instead of sticking to the word I'm on.
Then, even if I try going back to the word I was originally trying to delete, it will STILL force me to delete all the other parts of my sentence before allowing me to properly delete the original word.
I'm with the OP.
I'd rather have a snap-on physical bluetooth keyboard. a nice big one just as big as the S III itself.
There are BT keyboards out there but they're small like the iPhone.
I've tried Swift and Swype. I couldn't get used to swype but I do LOOOOOVE SwiftKey. The Longpress numbers is awesome. I felt great paying for it. One of the few apps I've bought with such ease. Google should buy SwiftKey. Everyone here is right- the stock Samsung keyboard is crap. Especially the landscape one. At least try swiftkey first, though, since I don't think there are any keyboards or keyboard cases yet for S III although since it is so popular I imagine there might be one soon. But SwiftKey is a huge improvement on Samsung's keyboard.

Tip #12 is a better way to improve the keyboard.
I've always wanted the long press top row for numbers back, but I primarily use my N7 in portrait so the letters are really small with this. Awesome to know that brings the full keyboard back, but I don't think I'll keep it.
Does anyone know if there's a way to use the stock keyboard (so the default QWERTY option) but to add long press numbers to the top row?

Does anyone know if there's a way to use the stock keyboard (so the default QWERTY option) but to add long press numbers to the top row?

Got the PC thing working but agree its not useable in portrait.
As far as long press for numbers, thats what my default android keyboard is on 4.2.1 ROM. Its pretty good actually with swipe feature included but still not as good as Thumb.
I believe it is usable in portrait. The swiping is accurate enough to not have to hit keys right on... the keys are much larger than the Swype keys on my Optimus (3.2") screen, which works too (but not as well). I thought the same when I first changed it, but after using it a few days, I seems to swipe just as fast (and accurately).

Sounds like exactly what I came here looking for... but...
unfortunately, I have a new Verizon Note 2, which doesn't have an Android Keyboard. Just Samsung (which doesn't have autocorrect... WTF? and Swype.)
Thanks anyway. Just FYI, Note II users are out of luck.
