Last night I was testing out the E4GT by playing Grave Defense HD and the app kept closing once I reached a certain level of game intensity. It didn’t give me a force close error, it just disappeared like it had been killed with task manager.
I decided it was an issue with that game and tried another game I thought would be less intensive (Spinballs). The same thing started happening with that game. At a certain level of intensity, the game just disappeared from the screen. Phone sat looking back at me like nothing was wrong.
I played both of these games on my E4G without this kind of issue.
I’m not using any kind of automatic task manager or memory manager. I haven’t done any rooting type shenanigans with the phone either.
Anyone else experience anything like this?
N.O.V.A. 2 HD - which came with the phone - is causing the same symptom. Maybe I have a lemon.
I experienced this with the browser twice already, out of the blue, mobile sites, nothing intensive.
Same thing here with Grave Defense HD. Frustrating.
Thank you so much for letting me know this. Honestly. I thought I was losing my mind or had the world's worst luck. I was about to reset my phone to factory default just to see if that would clear up the issue.
It did the same to me while playing third blade
Anyone find the cause?

The browser on my original Epic 4g would randomly close out the same way, pisses me off when it happens. I'm not happy to hear about this

Both my wife's E4GT and mine are doing the exact same thing as well. This is with Grave Defense, Fieldrunners, and Plants vs Zombies.
I continue to get this when playing any game. It doesn't look like it is related to intensity. It seems that maybe it is just after a set amount of time or something. I used the zedomax root and it still happens after root. I was also wondering if maybe some service is activating (PRL check? Firmware check? Email check?) and that kills the game for some reason.
I stayed up reading Kindle on my phone for a long time just to check it and it didn't close the Kindle app. I'm trying really hard to find a pattern.
Im thinking about deleting the stock task manager, and putting on advanced task killer. It kills my set cpu and shoots me back up to 1,200mhz. And it doesn't kill everything effectively anyways.

I don't even have an SD in my phone yet so it's unrelated to the app being on the SD card or not from the sound of it.

Oh yeah I guess it does have that... everything is installed to internal memory and not the internal SD card though right? I haven't tried moving anything to SD card (external or internal)

If you uninstall the stock task man and put on a custom one can you let us all know if that fixed the random task close/exits.
Killed my task manager, installed Watchdog (which keeps stats on running tasks - made sure to whitelist GRave Defense HD so it wouldn't try to whine about it).
Still went "poof" and closed by itself in the middle of the game after it'd been running long enough and enough stuff was going on.
Verified that task manager is still not running in my applications list. So... thats not what's doing it strangely enough.
To further troubleshoot this, sound was off.
Is there a debug file or something we can have android make?
My theory was incorrect
Maybe there is a setting we need to uncheck

Looked all through the settings for "Annoyingly close programs that you are actively using without giving any errors and making you scratch your head in disbelief" but couldn't find that to turn off
On a more serious note, we're at least building up a good amount of things that it *isn't* which does in fact help

Hey I've had the HTC Desire for around 2 weeks now and its been awesome, well until these last couple of days. The phone for some reason keeps on rebooting on its own randomly and about 10 minutes ago it shutdown and would not power back on :S. I had to remove the battery, place it back and then it powered up (after pressing the power button).
I have not rooted the desire ... anyone know of any apps which may be causing this issue? or Any solutions for this issue?
Thanks
there are too many apps to mention which could be doing this to compatibility issues
you tell us, what apps have you installed? and more importantly which apps have you installed recently?
is your desire still rebooting now that you've taken the battery out and put it back in? or is it working now?

i don't suppose you've installed juice defender?
so recently installed apps are:
Dropbox

Light Racer 3D Basic
HTC_IME mod (Atari version of the keyboard)
AndAppStore
Astro File Manager
AppInstaller

BatteryTimeLite
Beautiful Silence Widgets
Gigbox
JuicePlotter, JuiceDefender and Ultimate Juice
Flashlight
Soccer Livescores

Calorie Counter
Advanced Task killer
Fring
Those are the apps i've installed since may 1st.
It's working atm but it has rebooted after i have removed the battery in the las couple of days. Its the first time it wouldn't boot back. Thanks

on another thread the issue was caused by juice defender changing the apn and then not changing it back but this was because it was uninstalled, oddly enough it was this causing reboot cycles on the desire
with advanced task killer it is very likely that juice defender changed the apn and then before it could change it back was killed by a.t.k
would recommend uninstalling atk anyway as it has been proven to cause problems. try this and then see if the problem persists.
Alright i've uninstalled ATK. Hope this fixes the issue (i'll post up an update on the situation tomorrow). Any other task manager apps you would recommend or just not use one?

i just wouldn't use one, this has been explained in more detail but i'll try to explain
android manages memory more efficiently, if an application is launched, it will stay in memory until the memory is needed for something else, then android will close this application and give the memory to the new one.
if say for example you force close the browser, it could have been linked to google maps, the news widget, friend stream etc, and once the browser is closed by the task killer, the other applications will re-open it in order to complete what they are doing, this will drain a large amount of battery.
correct me if i'm wrong
keep us updated if it doesn't work then try the fixes i posted on the other thread posted above

Yea i have read about that a few times and i should know better hehe. Was trying to save on battery life but juice defender and ultimate juice should be more efficient in that respect. I will post an update tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully its a positive update
Right so the desire hasn't rebooted on me since installing advanced task manager (not that I've noticed anyway). The only thing that happens is that it froze up on me once and I needed to remove the battery for it to reboot... But other than that no other issues so maybe it was atk doing the damage.

right so it was fine but a couple of hours after posting the update it reboot itself and again this morning... seems like its going to have to be a hard reset... any last tips that might help before i so this?
I read the thread that was posted earlier but that seems to be an error with hanging up calls and apn issues. I don't use apn and it does if randomly but thanks for trying to help.

mine has been rebooting a lot, I've narrowed it down to the thing overheating, phoned HTC and they suggest I get it swapped. Does yours reboot more often when it is warm? eg. gps&wifi on, or when its on charge?
yea it seems too. even while playing games.
I'll send HTC an email and see is they reccomend I do the same.

I installed Taskiller last night, then HTC Desire started playing up, the screen froze, I couldn't do anything or even switch off using power button. I ended up taking the battery out to reset it. On firing up it just sorta went into a loop rebooting on reaching the homepage. After a few attempts I manage to get Appremover working, I removed taskiller and phone is now behaving itself again.
Obvious to me what the culprit was.
It was a worrying few moments as the phone is only a week old.

Rigjt, so after emailing HTC and them helping me I find that the issue was being caused by a third party app. Took me the best part of 2 hours but I finally found the culprit.
Right so the app causing the problem for me was beautiful silence widgets, which is a shame as they are great widgets (emailed the developer so they might release a fix for it).
The testing process was making a list of all the apps I had installed on the my desire. Then installing a few at a time, I would reboot the phone into safe mode. Which ever app causes it to reboot almost instantly I guess was causing the issue.
Finally my desire seems to be functioning properly. Fingers crossed that I don't jynx it.

Problem is when it does reboot it gets to the main screen and reboots again unless im quick enough to get to settings and deactivate gprs/Wifi
Uninstalled advanced task killer now have used gprs for a small amount of time since and no reboots so hopefully its fixed
Mine used to reboot itself while using 3g or WiFi, but the problem seems to have gone (hopefully) after I disabled the Background Data in the sync settings. Looks like it's some application trying to update itself like weather widget or something... Now it's just a process of elimination I guess...

I'm running Cyanogen 7.1. About two or three weeks ago, I started getting full system freezes which require me removing the battery to get it to restart.
It only happens a couple times a week, but when it does, it comes in bunches, and I often have to pull the battery five or six times before it settles down again.
After restarting the phone, it will get as far as preparing the SD card, and the launcher icons for apps moved to the SD card will fill in in the launcher, and then within 30 seconds or so, the entire phone hangs.
I know you can't tell me what the problem is just from that, but I'd appreciate some advice about any logs or such that I can check.
Thanks

I ended up starting from scratch and doing a clean reflash of Cyanogen. I'm assuming it had to do with me forcing all apps to the SD card, so I won't do that this time.
Good call. Not all apps can run from the SD Card. Particularly apps that have attached Widgets and native system apps.
Recently on a few roms I've seen my phone wake itself. Not entirely sure how.. And not to mention, it does this when I'm sleeping. So basically my phone will die within hours as my phone stays on and the screen burns in
Unfortunately I have a 30 second time out and it does not shut off my screen. It stays on entirely.
I need help to fix this issue, I have not recently installed anything I normally don't install things and haven't flashed any kernel or mod that should affect it. I did flash a Beats mod by rocko but I highly doubt that is causing the issue.

It sounds like some app is waking it up and then holding a wake lock. You will have to experiment and uninstall apps to see which app is doing it. Do you remember installing a certain app right before it starts doing it. More than likley it will be one of the apps on the running menu under manage applicarions.

Exactly this, apparently Doubletwist was the culprit. Shame too.. its never done that to me before, I like using my phone as a media server to use on my xbox/surround sound system

I use better battery stats to find wakelocks. Sounds like yours was any easy find but some can be really sneaky.
I know Songbird has a ton of addons, maybe give it a look and see if it can do what doubletwist does.
In a related note....my screen timeout wouldn't work one day. No matter what I set it to, the phone would never timeout/display-off automatically. I just ran 'Fix Permissions' and issue fixed itself.
I'll have to try it, songbird is sick. I am in love with that audio player.

You probably have an issue with Screen Wakelock(a.k.a FULL_WAKE_LOCK) , which is used by third-party apps to control the screen.
There is an app which is specially developed for solving "wakelock" issues, It is called "Wakelock detector" freely available at GooglePlay.
Or you can just type "Wakelock" at GooglePlay
Here is XDA thread; Xda Wakelock detector
Perhaps this can help as well.

Just curious, does this happen to everyone here? Is this normal to happen after 2-3 days of use?

Yes I did close them... I even tried force closing all. Not sure why the phone was struggling a little.
you didn't enable power saving mode by any chance?
also, android should be fairly good at managing your memory. i believe google doesn't really recommend task killers because whenever you kill tasks that the OS needs, it'll just reload it, which itself consumes resources (maybe more resource than letting the process simply idle). so just leave those processes alone.
Are you running SetCPU? Make sure it didn't accidentally severely under clock you. That happened to me once and SETCPU was running me at 200 mhz for some reason.

Don't close the apps down just back out of them because you'll lag more when your phone sits there trying to open them all up again and cache them. But I agree its a strange problem, if this occurs againit might be something very specific.

Is there a way to know if all cores are running on stock Android?
I've also seen some sick battery life in this phone, but not on mine. Yesterday I got 12 hours with about 3 1/2 of screen, with few and short phone calls. What I used the most on this phone was the internet and the browser..
Not sure if these are related.
EDIT.... I installed CPU usage Monitoring and the 4th core stays off most of the time.. when I opened videos and messed with more apps it started working so I'm answering myself on that. Also, I played a video with the pop up function and the cpu only gets to about 30% and not even on all cores... wow.. the processing power here is really impressive.

Hi there,
I've got an annoying issue with my S3 with any player I use. The music stops playing at some point. It could be either after 3 min or 27 min with headset plugged in or not.
I've checked everywhere and 've seen a lot of people with the same problem but none of them has a proper fix.
I am running stock JB, Canadian Bell version, no root, no flash or any of these.
I didn't activate any motion option or fancy way to stop the player. When I receive a notification of all kind while listening, the player just stops for half a sec and then resume, I believe it is the way it should work.
I would much appreciate some help coz it drives me crazy.
By the way, happy new Year!

I have had a similar problem with my phone ever since I switched to JB. My problem was that once the screen turned off, the player would stop, or stop once the song ends and not start the next song. I did not have this problem with ICS.
For me, I was able to fix it by going into the music app setting and unchecking the box for the screen automatically turning off during music play. However, if I turn the screen off manually the music will stop again either right away or at the end of the song. For now I'm OK just leaving the screen on since I charge the phone when I'm streaming music in the car.
Idk if this will help you or not.

I tried disable/enable and uninstall /reinstall and no luck. But, I figured it out that it was due to Juice Defender settings and adjusted them and now Pandora will play when the screen is off.

Well you said you have no motions enabled but just throwing this out there you can turn over to mute/pause under motion control. I don't see how this could be a hardware problem so if you reinstalled stock it shouldn't be happening. If it's not your software then the only thing I could imagine is the encoding of your files. I know from experience that some MP4s from iTunes don't work. idk why.
Hi,
We guys don't seem to have same problem.

Same problem with any of these.
There is always a lot of apps running in background such as bloat, mail, fb, rss reader, games....

I would suggest going back to basics. There might be some debris in your headphone jack that shorts the "Pause" action. I would blow some compressed air in there, just in case.
Also, didn't S Voice or something have a command to Pause/Play? Maybe you have that on and through casual conversation S Voice is picking it up as Pause?
Thanks for your advise.
Blew some air but just in case but nothing.
S Voice cmd isn't active, I had already turn that off.
I think I'll do a factory reset and see if it fixes it.

I have had this problem off and on ever since I got the phone. It usually happens when I am listening to music and listening to the coaching from my running app (Endomondo Pro). They both work fine for a while then randomly one or both will stop playing through the headphones. I have tried a factory reset multiple times and nothing completely stops this.
Ok
Basically I don't need to bother to do so. Coz to be honest it's a pain in the a.. to do it.
Don't know what to do to fix this.

My PowerAmp developed a similar problem out of the blue just today or within the last few days.
JB 4.1.1 Ultimatum ROM.
Was working fine.
Then noticed it would stop playing after just five seconds, repeatedly.
I uninstalled.
Wiped Cache & Davlik.
Reinstalled and so far, so good. No more problems yet.
Pandora did not have any problems before or after.
Nope, n/m.
As soon as I hooked it up to my dock with DIY USB-OTG cable, PowerAmp started stopping/starting again.
Could be JB or any dozen other things, including my DIY cable.
I'll have to t/s some more.

As I said here:
You are running JuiceDefender.
Someone else in the thread with the same problem was running JuiceDefender.
Said someone else was able to make the problem go away by tinkering with JuiceDefender settings.
Could that possibly be the source of the problem, and a possible solution?
And as I said : we guys don't seem to have the same problem.
My player doesn't stop when screen goes black. My player stops randomly that's it.
He wanted to listen to internet radio while screen's off and just needed to set juice defender properly.
Anyway

If a specific program you're using is causing a similar issue to the one you're experiencing with other users, is it not worth taking a similar approach to solving the problem? If you don't have a sense of what settings in that program might be causing issues, then just stop the program running for a while and see if the problem goes away.
Likewise, if it's something else on your phone causing issues, stop other programs you might be running from running one by one and see if/when the problem goes away.

Umm, I am a she, not a he .
When I researched further, it was Juice Defender turning off the cellular raido that was causing the problem. The screen was a coincidence.
It wouldn't hurt to turn Juice Defender off and see if it still happens, just to rule that out. That way you would know for sure it is something else.
My set up is the same as yours, stock phone (can't remember if you are using ICS or JB), with Juice Defender and GSam Battery Monitor.
I ended up just turning Juice Defender off and putting it on power saving mode and honestly I haven't noticed a difference in performance, and I'm having better battery life than with Juice Defender. I'm getting average 23 hours on a charge and I'm using it a lot (although it does get charged in my car when I'm streaming music). With Juice Defender I was getting average 17 hours on a charge with using it a lot.
Sorry about that!
I did try that already but didn't change a thing.
I think I'll consider rooting it and flashing it.
