im using the samsung infuse 4g and thinking about trying a wp7 phone. I want a wp7 phone that compares or is better than my infuse. What phones are out there and what can i expect when switching from android os? thanks
I wouldnt do it. WP7 hardware can't compare to the Infuse. The Infuse is actually one hell of a phone and has so much more with it. WP7 is basically featureless with no sign of improvement. It'll be a dead system before long.

Big mistake!!! Don't even try to jump to WM7, you will regret it! Android has more and better options that wm7.
Good luck!

Don't bother trying to reason with him. I can tell it's useless by the kind of post he made.
@OP: I suggest going to you carrier's local store & playing with the WP7 handset(s) they have & see if you like WP7 first & foremost. My suggestion as to which device, I'd say go for a Mango 2nd Gen handset with a Front Facing Camera & a 1.4-5 GHz CPU as these's will be more bang for your buck & will most likely receive more updates down the road. No telling when the 1st Gen devices will loose support. As to Hardware, it doesn't matter as much on WP7, because a 1GHz CPU is faster than "some" faster Android devices & even the Android Dual Cores. I did say some though, there's a few that can keep up.
Why so many people who hate the platform in here? All you android fans seem to have way too much time on your hands. Can't remember the last time I even went into an Android forum.
I for one left Android & the iPhone and will never go back. Mango kicks the crap out of either of them I don't care if your processor is newer.

ya why are android users posting useless info here? i just watched a mango review on pocketnow.com and mango looks really impressive. is there any real customization to mango? can you change the wallpaper to something besides black or white, i think that might buy me? also will it sync to my google contacts? idont use ms office at all.
Go for it. Windows Phone 7.5 is much better OS than Android 2.3.5 - faster, with much better design, with great Facebook / Twitter / LinkedIn integration, Office Hub (Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint), Xbox Live and many other stuff. All apps follow design guidelines and are fluent, unlike in Android.
As is Office 2010 + SkyDrive + Hotmail and/or Office365 + Office Online + SharePoint is much better than Gmail and Docs, so is Mango better than Android. I would suggest staying with Android only if you rely on Google services.
I personally would not do it. The infuse has betterhardware than second Gen WP devices and Android is clearly superior at this point in time. Wait another year imo...

It's very simple. And you will understand once you've owned a WP7 device for about a month. People who love WP7 in the beginning and think it is the best system yet, turn against it because there just isn't any customization with it. The current crop of WP7 phones don't have the features you have with phones like the Infuse. And worst of all, the "system-on-a-chip" architecture of WP7 prevents it from having superior sound quality. There is no dedicated audio chip in the works to provide good SQ. The Infuse is believed to have an audio chip from Yamaha. And I can confirm, with my high-end IEMs, it is a superior sounding phone. The best I've ever heard on a smartphone. And on par with the Wolfson-equipped Cowons.
If you want to play with a WP7 phone for a while and experience for yourself how boring and useless it currently is, find one from a store that has a good return policy like Best Buy. Play with it for 20 days and see for yourself. Then return it once you see what we all mean.
Mango is not out yet and there is no date for it to be released. It could come anywhere from Sep. 23 to Dec. 21....maybe. And Mango won't give you better hardware. What you buy today is all you have...no FFC, no NFC, no good audio chip, poor battery life. Mango won't give you any of those. You'll need to wait till better WP7 hardware is released with those features. And your guess is as good as anyone's as to when MS will release better hardware. MS doesn't give out firm dates. And they allow the public to speculate wildly with rumors of new releases and don't even bother to take 1 minute to tweet about the facts.
That's why I say WP7 will be dead...because the company ignores what they need to do and are way too slow about doing anything. They act like they don't care about the system. They released a system without the common features of today. WP7 will go the way of the Kin. MS won't find the necessary support and cooperation they need from the carriers because the carriers have no confidence in MS...especially after the Kin fiasco. MS introduced WP7 as a system they would have control of, providing all of the updates and controlling implementation. They devised the hardware specs so that they could provide updates to all WP7 phones at the same time safely. That has no happened and it is understood MS is allowing the carriers to control the updates.
I have a Samsung Focus with NoDo and another device with Mango on it. They rarely get used because there just isn't anything I can do with them unlike what I can with my Androids...especially my glorious and overwhelmingly awesome Infuse. The base foundation of WP7 is excellent. It's super smooth and elegant. But there's nothing there once your get tired of it. With other systems, there is always something you can do to alleviate boredom. Not so with WP7. I suppose you could satisfy yourself with going to the games directory of the Marketplace to see what new games came...WP7 does have some very fine games from time to time. And this is basically the extent of my WP7 usage. But I'm glad I have other phones. I can't even use my WP7 phones for voice-guided navigation because there isn't any.
Go ahead, find out for yourself...buy one from Best Buy. You'll have about 20 days to return it.
i guess it all depends on what do you want it for. Hardware (cpu) is irrelevant, windows ME would suck even with an i7.
If you like music like I do...WP7 is a must. Zune Pass is the best offer in the market.
if I am in the market I would wait a few months...couple of new hardware coming out that looks pretty darn nice.

your post is mind blowing. who really do hardcore gaming on a phone?
Laughing my arse off, so many haters.
I wouldn't swap my Omnia 7 for my friend's GSII. We both purchased them around the same time and our experiences are jarringly different - I'm pleasantly surprised again and again on Mango, while he's run into hiccups (laggy lockscreen, FaceBook friends merged with contacts and can't be selectively chosen, hit "update all" and his apps started updating over cellular data with no pause/cancel).
Mango blows Android out of the water in terms of core experience. If you don't like the look of Windows Phone, don't buy it. You can read the limitless articles on the Internet and try out a device. If you were expecting deep customization, you're not going to get it.
I purchased a Windows Phone because Windows Mobile frustrated me. Once you've been in the customization game for long enough, you know that it will never match a purely unified, integrated system.
@Purple11, first person shooters on a touchscreen device? I don't think that's a deal-breaker for anyone. CoD on a phone simply won't work.
@MartyLK, it all just WORKS. That's probably why you get bored, there's not as much excitement when it's all just great.

I loved it from the beginning & still do, so false. Yes, I do miss customizing, but now I save 1000's of hours I used to waste customizing/hacking/tweaking my cell phone.
Yes & no, Mango does give new hardware that can be used. Of course it won't add new hardware to current device. Software updates can't do that. HTC's new devices are already on their official site, so they should be out any time now. They also have FFC & WP7 has much better battery life than Android. I have 50% battery life after 8 hrs of moderate to heavy use with a lot of 3G+ internet browsing. Another false statement.
There's Garmin & Navigon is coming in Mango, so yes there is voice-guided navigation. False yet again.
In the end, WP7 does everything the typical user could need minus Video MMS & Flash support. Neither of which I miss. I can listen to music, watch movies, call text, send pictures, browse the internet, watch Youtube, connect on Facebook & Tweeter, etc. & do so fast & efficiently. Voice commands work great. I currently work in delivery & constantly use Bing Maps to get directions & can't state how great & fast it is to just tell the phone the address or cross street instead of typing it in. My co-workers look at me funny when they see me do it. They all have Androids, go figure.

That's false. My Focus is horrendous for battery life. And even sitting unused, without the email syncing, I have to charge it every other day. The HD7 I had was just as horrendous as the Focus. Not so with my other phones. Android can be a battery hog. But the Infuse is the best Android phone I've seen for battery life.
How is what I said false about the navigation? Is there voice-guided navigation on WP7 right now? And has there been any voice-guided navigation from the launch of WP7?
And just because you haven't turned against it doesn't mean what I said was false. I know of people who can't stand WP7 now. But they were feverish for it in the beginning.

It's false, because you give the misconception that everyone who loved it will eventually hate it or grow bored. Yes, there is a current GPS app, Garmin. I already said this & there are a few others in the market. Sorry, I get great battery life & to expect to get more than 2 days on heavy to moderate usage with a smartphone, you're expecting too much. It's not a dumb-phone where you can go a week without charging & most likely won't change anytime soon.

I am writing this now on a handset which has really not lived up to all its hype, for me anyway.
I received the Samsung Omnia 7 last Monday, and while it was amazing for the first couple of days, once the novelty factor of the UI wore off I've been getting more and more android withdrawal symptoms.
Don't get me wrong, its a very nice phone but for me let down by the OS. WP7 looked like the perfect OS but after a weeks use its just not right for me. I'll list my personal pros and cons:
PROS
•Keyboard is great
•Live tiles are a joy and really set your phone apart from the rest
•Internet Explorer is great
CONS
•Battery life is dreadful
•No flash support
•Lack of C&P
•Wifi connectivity issues, can't use FB without data connection on even with full WiFi lock, same issue with IE and twitter
•Lack of customisation options
•Not really practical, takes too long to get simple things done
•Lack of apps on marketplace (I know its only young) and the games just cost too much, i mean come on £5.99 for assassins creed?
I know some of the cons will be fixed with updates but I just can't see myself loving this phone like I did my previous one. I'll be phoning Orange tomorrow and hopefully exchanging this for the HTC Desire HD, which my friend has and is an amazing phone.
I might come back to WP7 or WP8 or whatever the update is called, as once the necessary functionality is there coupled with the lovely UI, it'll be and OS to be reckoned with.
Peace WP7 users. I may see you again some day

While I still find my HD7 an excellent WP7 phone, and still love WP7, your choice of alternatives is excellent. I'm using DesireHD on my HD2 and it is a sweet build. I love the skin feature. The "Wildflower" skin is one of my favorites followed by "Metal". The hardware looks sweet too.
good luck
especially with DesireHD
but beware of battery of it
it's much more dreadful compare to WP7 phone
Btw im planning on buying a 1500mah battery for the desire HD (fiver from eBay), hopefully the battery life won't be as awful as reviewers make out thanks for your comments
CONS

Compared to what? My Samsung Focus gets better battery life than the HTC Fuze it replaced and I do a lot more with it.

Nothing Microsoft can do about pricing and has nothing to do with the platform.
Good luck. I can guarantee you the Desire HD has a worse display, worse battery life and is a lot slower due to HTC's android bloatware. I had one for a few weeks but couldnt stand it.
Anyway, if you like it better, then chances are WP7 isn't for you.

If what the other posters are saying about the DesireHD is true, I highly recommend obtaining an HTC HD2 and using the DesireHD build with it instead of the actual DesireHD. You get all the goodness of DesireHD with better battery life and a better screen. Everything works on it too. Plus, if you get bored, you can make it into any of the other Android phones out which have a build made of them. You also get Nexus S Gingerbread goodness if you want.
The builds in my sig are pretty much perfection.

that's not entirely true. MS needs to open up the system a bit more by providing a lot more APIs for the different parts of the phone. PIM, Video recording, and Compass are just some examples where there are no current APIs yet, but when introduce open up a whole lot of new possibilities for apps.
And as for games, you need to look at it in terms of age of the game. Acreed is an example where on the iOS it's a lot cheaper, but that's because it's been on the iOS market for 2+ years, and only just entered WP market. Give it 2 years and it will be the same price. probably less time.

I want pocket informant style calendar, not WP7 calendar because its not customizable, color coding and tons and tons of other things i could do in PI8 but not WP7 calendar.
I want ringtones customized.
I want many more customization which i dont want to write in detail because it will be 3-4 pages long for me.
Were you even a slight power user of WM?? Than you will have common sense to realize how much customization is lacking in WP7. Their is nothing to tweak in this phone, you have to swallow what they give you.
I am eager to see how much progress is made when the first update hits early next year. Maybe they give some details at CES or MWC.

I wonder how many of us joined here out of necessity because, frankly, stock winmo is crap. we had to tweak and customize it just to use the damn thing. With wp7, the urge to tweak isn't there for me.

Personally, I've been a mammoth user of WM for years, and yes I cutomized it a lot, primarily because I had to to get it how I wanted it. Amazingly, WP7 is perfect for me out of the box. I really don't find any great need to customize it beyond installing the apps I want and arranging my tiles how I want them.
It sounds to me like you're addicted to customization for the sake of it, and I'd suggest you get yourself an Android phone which you can tinker with to your heart's content, while the rest of us get on with living our lives to the full.
After all, what could be better than an OS made by an advertising company?
Rofl @ last sentence/question. What an awesome way to end an awesome post. I think I woke up the neighbors, LOL.

You know why they customized WM? To make it useable. WP7 doesn't need the customization because it is already useful.
The same argument can be applied to Android. Why do OEMs put skins on Android? Well, they think the UX and the UI are lacking, that's why.
Why fix what's not broken?
+1 to what these guys said. The reason customisation is limited is because - in the view of the vast majority of people that purchase a WP7 device - it's perfectly usable as is.
If you want a hobby phone you can flash, root, hardSPL, tweak, skin, tinker and waste literally tens of hours of your time on, an android phone is the way to go.
If you want a powerful smartphone that gets you "in, out and back where you need to be", WP7 is a good bet.

I remember when I first got my G1 and there only like 500 apps on it which might have been an overestimate at that point in time.
Personally, coming from a Tilt2, I found my Focus to be flat-out incredible. Yes, I did spend a lot of time tweaking the old Tilt2, and yes, a good bit of it was recreational and not just out of necessity. However, I would not have been pushed into rom flashing if the stock rom weren't so bad on it. It was a laggy, crashy beast, and required a ton of work to be something that was not embarrassingly slow.
The Focus is, out of the box, incredibly and effortlessly fast. I don't care that I can't tweak more things in it because, frankly, it is so fast at doing everything that a couple extra swipes here or there doesn't bug me. Yes, it really does take the hobby aspect out of my phone. If you want that in your primary device, then Android (or as has been mentioned, an HD2) is the gizmo for you. I'm personally tempted to pick up a Streak, now that the unlocked ones have had a price dip, just to play around with it. However, my WP7 device will remain as my primary phone for my day-to-day usage.
Btw, just checked, facebook works on wifi only with data connection turned off, just checked this on my hd7
I did think about a HD2, but I can only change to what phones I was offered when I initially upgraded, my options were :
-HTC Desire HD
-Samsung Omnia 7 (obviously)
-HTC Mozart
-Samsung galaxy s
-Blackberry Torch
-Nokia N8
I want android, so really its between the desire HD or the galaxy s, But the galaxy s has 2.1 out of the box while the desire HD has 2.2 and sense which I loved on my HTC hero and looks even better on the desire HD. And I want to root and install a custom oc'able kernel to boost the performance.
For me the screen is nicer on the desire HD than it is on my Omnia 7, which may sound wrong but even though the res is the same due to the squareness of the Omnia 7 The pixels seem more visible and the samoled screen is too saturated.
MS came through on the usability and quality of WP7 at last. The NoDo update made my Samsung Focus the supreme phone in my collection. Yeah, yeah...I know WP7 still lacks the usual features. But I'm loving the experience with my Focus so much I really don't miss them. It helps to have other phones that have those missing features
The Focus is supreme and WP7 is now supreme. They are both working pretty much flawlessly. The market loads and scrolls effortlessly now. I think it's even better than the Android market for functionality. It does quite often put me back at the top of a category after I install an app, though. But it is most certainly free of the frustration inducing loading and scroll-freezing. And I have yet to experience a market freeze-up.
I must agree, while it is missing some small feature atm. What it does, it does very well. Now that I got full GPS, only real thing I need is for Adobe to finally make Flash support & full Multitasking that's in Mango when it comes. Just wish that update wasn't so far away.

Not really. I got the NoDo/firmware update as soon as it was released. I've just been using my phone long enough to appraise it as what I described. I have had the habit of speaking a bit too soon about something and then it falls apart. Not so with WP7 this time around.

I agree wholeheartedly in all aspects but one (and it really has nothing to do with MS, but the Focus). Samsung is BY FAR the most pathetic hardware manufacturer in the WP7 game with respect to creating useful value-added apps for their marketplace. And even when the DO come with something good, they pull it a month later.
Look at the amazing apps that HTC (YouTube, etc) and LG (Pano camera add-on, voice-to-text, etc) have produced, and then look at the chaff in the Samsung Zone. There is no comparison.

Yeah, I agree. The dearth of desirable apps by Sammy is certainly troubling. AT&T has a couple I use, though.
Copy and paste should work with the stock calculator.

Completely agree. Post-Nodo I'm really enjoying the experience - the phone was good but now it's great.
The only things I am personally missing from my old iPhone 4 are psuedo-multitasking and good IM clients. Otherwise the experience with WP7 / Xbox / Zune Pass is fantastic
I am also happy with my WP7 experience. But c&p phone numbers would be lovly, as well internet speed up on my Omnia 7. Its redicilous slow atm. Flash or decent you tube app and flashlight would also make my day. Wish MS could include a flashlight as standard, really annoying.

There are several YouTube apps to choose from. I for one use Lazytube, which is really great imho. You can also find loads of flashlights on the marketplace. Don't know whether they use the LEDs or not, since I have an HD7 with HTC flashlight and thus have no need for any 3rd party app.
I also feel the same after nodo. initially i thought MS fooled me thrice but now feels like i am loving the uniqueness of it. Sure it is new OS so need to give it time after all. Hope MS do not drop the ball.

To be honest I think they will be pulling out all the stops to ensure they release mango by end of October or early November.
1. To introduce new handsets for the Christmas period with the brand spanking new OS.
2. Because of iOS 5 looming on the horizon.
3. To keep a consistent timeline going like Apple. Launch was November.
And if they are not then this will be a failure for them. Nokia also should be trying at all costs to push out a Windows Phone for fall too.
i agree with OP.... MS did it this time with the mobile OS...
i am wating for 2 things 1st MANGO, 2nd is Nokia hardware...
If you look at my previous posts I am been a regular basher of WP7 for last 4 months.. but now that I bought one and see everything in it, I think its an excellent interface and a great piece of innovative technology that surpasses Android and Iphone at many levels. I dont even have the Nodo update yet on my phone, but I still love this phone more than anything other I have ever used. Great piece of technology, Zune Pass, Marketplace and all Microsoft services run very smooth and just perfect.
I love how quickly I can switch back from Application to another with such a ease. Its great for Multi-tasking. Microsoft has also added little things which makes its very comfortable to use, like when I plug out the earphones, the music player automatically stops and dosents star blaring in phone speakers.
The proximity sensors on Samsung Omnia 7 works great with no fail. So no more of me accidentally taping on screen while on call.. its very handy, every touch phone should have it.
Everything on Windows Phone is smooth and bug free.
It has made buying so easy by billing it straight to my AtnT bill, that I no longer bother to get a 'crack' file and just buy the software if I like the trial. Gone is the software piracy problem, it will kill websites like ppcwarez...
Listening, exploring and buying music is such a nice experience, nothing like that exists in Windows Mobile and could not have been implemented using that platform.
Microsoft did a great work on Windows Phone and I have found new respect for people working their. Congratulations and Thank You.
PS - If only I could disable the Search Button sometimes and had a little longer battery life it would be great.
The shiny will wear off soon enough.
Both have their place, but WM is a bit more flexible and more universally useful ATM, especially an HTC Sense WM device like the HD2.
IMO.
what i liked about windows mobile is whats preventing me from saying wp7 is better.
I know the ui is much more smoother and lag free but i miss being able to wifi tether, use my device as a usb mass storage device, and being able to download albums, rar files, and everything from the web to my storage card on the go and update my library all without the use of a computer, i dont like how wp7 is dependent upon the computer like the iphone is. And i like being able to use the file explorer on windows mobile to manage my files.
i love wp7 and im getting one as soon as verizon launches it but those are some key features that are slightly holding wp7 back

Then you need to remember one thing, Microsoft has upgraded WM 6.5 though several years. So what do you expect on the OS that has just been published for about few months?
Now is time for Microsoft to listen to their user and consider about it. Mango Update look quite bright to me...

Agreed... I saw YouTube vids on the first looks at WP7 and thought it looked dull and boring, but after flashing my HD2, the phone is now slick, smooth, alive... I notice everything I do is quicker...
I show my iGroan and Haemorrhoid mates the bing search, pizza, pick a store, get directions... Blows them away!
hungry81 is right in what he's saying.
If you make a new OS, its all about to add new stuff, and update the old stuff, but without quitting anything!!!!
Like windows did, take a look at it, in Win7 we actually have DOS, and the very old win95 Theme, with a very good backward compatibility.
Thats a good job, and I was hoping that microsoft would go on with this positive actitude in mobile devices.
But no, they quit almost everything, everything that made WM so great and different from any other dumbass users OS like Iphone and Blackberry.
And you can't say that's only because the system is new, because as I read in this forum, WP7 is based on windows CE like WM, so nothing revolutionary.
you absolutely can't give props to the marketplace!
With my WM, I go to the internet site or eMule and download every App I need, without having problems to find them with very much good freeware.
With the Marketplace, almost every App has a price, maybe little, but I don't like to pay for something that in the previous platform was for free.
So why does WP7 fail in almost every aspect??? I'm shure, its because they want to stop piracy, so they quit almost every bridge to it (I can't find any other explanation).
No filesystem, no registry editor, no custom setups and even no flash in IE.
Now the biggest question: why do I own a WP7???? The answer is, because Iphone is to expensive and It sucks even more, Blackberry and nokia are not made for such multimedia, and Android, its more like a fashion, maybe its here today but not tomorrow, and WM 6,5 is no longer supported by new apps.
I hope, WP7 will start to live, will get better, and more user-friendly with better Apps support, downloadable directly from the internet site.
My biggest fear, is that what happened to WM, will happen to our main computer, in Windows 8

You know what happens to companies that make products that have all these wonderful features that nerds/geeks/techies love but no one else does?
I guess it is to be expected on a geek website that many members are upset with Windows Mobile going from a toolbox to a box of crayons, but somewhere along the way you should be forward-thinking enough to see it had to be done.
When it all boils down to it, in general iOS is better than all the other mobile OSes. Not because it can be more or do more, but because it is the most popular. Imagine if iOS came on several different handsets. So it is not for every specific person but in general it is well suited for most people.
Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'. Microsoft moved on, and I think everyone else should. Some people come into the Windows Mobile forum on a daily basis only intent on bashing the system. Microsoft wants Windows Phone to be the next iOS, not the next Android. Restrictions down to the number of physical buttons, no intended removable storage, and Zune dependent.
And you know the writing is on the wall for Android. What happens when more and more new devices come out with locked bootloaders? What happens when Google starts to tighten up the controls in the system? Business is about being a copycat. 10% innovation, 90% follow the leader.

Microsoft HAD to move to that "innovating" platform, but without quitting the old one.
giving some kind of connection to the old windows mobile options.

but I'm shure, its for some anti-piracy reason...
One of the reasons why this WP7 is not selling so well
Is it is limited in many areas.
another thing that I didn't mention, is that everyone is saying that WP7 is so easy to use.
I don't like that interface.
I'll tell you why.
I updated from WM6.1 to WM6.5 and I must say, I hated that start menu so much that I went back to WM6.1
Ok, perhaps it's fingerfriendly, for some unsensible fingers.
but I had a hard and frustrating time, finding my apps and setups.
That's because there is no folder rule, something that made so popular windows OS
Same problem has Iphone and Android, and finally WP7.
It may be easy to use if yo have less than 10 apps, but imagine having 30 apps and scrolling like a fool to find your app, that's mixed with the other phone icons.
I'm not an Apps fan, and I always try to have less apps than possible.
But I like it organized, with some folder-gerachy.
Android its scary, its desktop is full of apps icons one time I was 5 minutes searching for the Cam without finding anything. so I let it.
I know everyone is thinking the same, and I don't know why there's people who say that WP7 is cool and the new wave of mobile-OS are the future.
Maybe they have to give a sense to their spent money, or to the fact, that possibly there will be no go back to previous cool features and improvements of WM6.1

I dont think so, I think the reason why maybe its not selling so well is simply because many people are afraid to switch to their trusted Android or Iphone platform to something which is relativly new. But trust me, once they Windows Phone 7 Interface they will never go back.. I have never owned one Iphone or Android phone, but all my friends have them and they all borrow it to me for weeks because I am more tech saavy than them and I load usefull apps for them , so I pretty much know and have tested Iphone and Android at length.. but WP7 is nothing like that..
All my friends who borrowed me their Android and Iphones before now see my WP7 and the smoothness in WP7 and they all just want to instantly switch.. One just need to see it for more than 20 mins in a showroom and actually use the device for a week to see how good WP7 is compared to WM6.5, Iphone or Android.

Well definitely there will be many users loving WP7 look and feel.
For me it was opposite - I fell in love once I unboxed it but after 3 months I was having enough of limitations plus honestly UI of WP7 is dead boring after 3 months, some tiles are so horribly unappealing. It seems sometimes like a sketch not finished UI.
But this is taste and individual feeling. Many users will catch it. People I know were not appealed at all. So it's very individual.
And I have no idea in what sense WP7 is "so good" compared to Android or iOS.
I didn't find any real reason.

There is little if any innovation in WP7. People Hub as already done in TouchWiz. All of the Social integration is pretty much same ole same ole. Apple already had GameCenter. Apple has iPod (i.e. Zune) and you could get All-You-Can-Eat music from services like Rhapsody on other platforms.
Office isn't innovative because ThinkFree and other apps have comparable functionality and integration in other platforms. Also, Office has been in Windows Mobile since 2002 or so... The functionality of Outlook/Office going from WM to WP7 has actually been downgraded quite a lot. For example, WP7 doesn't support Exchange Tasks and the calendar is, IMO, worse...
Nothing great about Push Notifications which are worse and more volatile than any other platform that offers them.
Tiles and Live Tiles are just Widgets with a different look and feel.
Microsoft didn't really innovate any much moving from WM to WP7, and the base OS is still Windows CE. They used Silverlight as a way to decouple the UX from the base OS, but they released it before it was finished (hence why there are 1.5k APIs keeping apps off the platform coming with Mango).
How well WP7 does depends solely on how Android and iOS develop going into the future.
Nokia will help MS but Google has way more manufacturers and Apple will continue to do well building their own handset. Also, with Nokia somewhat abandoning Symbian a lot of their users will jump to Android because WP7 does not have functionality on par with BB/WM/Symbian to allow them to migrade decently form Symbian to WP7. Nokia cannot do that without reworking a bit of the OS and I doubt Microsoft will want them to diverge so far from the reference implementation.
I think in 2010 they lost bigtime because they didn't live up to the hype. The carriers still have as much control over WP7 as they do with Android, and their update system is still only on par with Android and much worse than iOS. In addition, the launch hardware is rather poor and with the i5 coming out soon after Mango, and Android Manufacturers pushing the button (not to mention Google making some pretty good changes in their OS latesly - free Voice/Video Chat in Google Talk?! We don't even have a WLM and it's not slated to even come with Mango!) it will be hard for them to persuade switches. In addition to that, the pitiful state of RTM WP7 has already made them a laughing stock on many tech blogs and among users. They should have waited, IMO.
People who have Android phones won't tell their friends to get WP7 devices because of Google Talk/Services. People with iOS devices will likely push that. People with Blackberries will recommend Blackberries because of BBM, etc. People with WP7 devices are generally on the fence and many are lamenting the purchase. The OS is so functionally thin, and even will still be compared to iOS/Android with Mango, that it's really hard to enjoy it. Android Manufacturers are already getting better with Updates (Samsung leading the pack, suprisingly), so that is already no longer a reason to go with WP7...
A good smartphone will not make you feel like you are hampered because you upgraded from a different OS, and a good smartphone will not force you to double fist two smartphones because it's lacking in so much functionality as to be unusable without a different device to fill in the gaps.
WM had usability issues, but it was a complete smartphone OS.
And BTW, it had nothing to do with it having a decade of development. Even from day one it was never possible to call WM functionally thin compared to anything on the market (Symbian, Blackberry, Palm, etc.). The actual phones/devices running it was a different story.
And as a business user WP7 is practically useless. It isn't even worth consideration. I'd get a Blackberry or Symbian Anna device, instead...
Hi,
I am tired of my current WP7, its almost 4 months now and their has been no major development in the APP market scene.. everyone just release initial app and than forget about it with no updates and no improvements.. the Gaming market scene of Xbox is pretty much dead too with no new fun game, I had pretty bad experience with Sonic which is practically unplayable and other boring games which have started coming out recently.. it seems Xbox is releasing games just for the heck of it.. ex: geodefence and tentacles.. boring not worth paying which are like free in android market..
I am really getting inclined to give up my WP7 and switch to Android now and buy Galaxy S2.. its has some plus points and some minus points:
Plus:
I can expand my memory.
Looks better.
Its Smoled 'Plus'.
It might have better battery? I am not sure about this.
Established Android market.
Minus:
Its too big for my pocket.
No ZUNE Pass like service.
I have to give up my Achievements Score and I dont know if they have anything similar to this.
I have never used Android and have never seen one ever before.. its completely new to me and I dont even know where is the settings option, I dont know if I will like it after using WM6.5 and now WP7 for last 7 years. I have seen Iphone before and used it for like a week, but never spend even 20 secs with an Android phone.
With all the hype surround MANGO which I am waiting for, I dont think Microsoft will release any major update after that for a really long time.. If this MANGO dosent work and the APP and GAMES Marketplace dosent become more vibrant than it is right now.. than I am thinking this WP7 could just become a device for people could not afford phones like Iphone and GALAXY S2, like a second option, a second choice market, which I am scared of.. I want to own the best and not the second choice.. and right now it seems GALAXY S2 with its ANDROID thing is the best phone in market.
Hmm. Not sure if I quite get where you're coming from with the apps and games thing. Over the last month, a ton of apps, big names and small, have come to the platform. A ton more coming and updated post-Mango. I mean, the market will most likely hit 30k apps soon. I don't have, nor do I use, 30k apps on my phone, not to mention the 100k+ or 400k+ of android and iphone, respectively.
Also, I'm pretty sure that every installed app, or almost every installed app, on my phone has seen an update... several at that. So, I missed you on the "no updates and no improvements" part. Are there specific apps that YOU are missing, or need that you can't find in the windows marketplace?
Games-wise, well that's a matter of preference. Games you find boring, others may find greatly exciting. For example, one recent game which has come to the platform that I like is Arcane Tower Defense. It's a fantasy version of the classic tower defense genre with some twists.
I also like little games like Vanessa Saint-Pierre Delacroix and her Nightmare. But, after Mango there will be many games including multiplayer fighting games, RPGs, you name it, real time and turn-based.
As to the GS2. I haven't used it personally. I do know you can't get xbox live benefits like achievments, however. I'm sure somebody else here is more informed on the phone than I. I hear it's a killer phone, though. And, there may also be a WP7 version of the phone as well.
But, dig around a bit and check out the apps that have hit the marketplace in the last month or so as well as the games. I think you may be pleasantly surprised. Then again...

They are on a yearly cycle for major updates, like pretty much everyone else.
I am finding it increasingly difficult to do business with this phone, its been so long and yet their is no decent Calendar App like Pocket Informant. The built in calendar app is very basic, I want to create recurring appointment on every first Tuesday of a month which was possible on PI8 but not here.
I miss Apps like SPB Diary which let me scroll my entire contacts and entire days appointments right from the front screen, and SPB Pocket Plus which basically was what Android is right now, a choice of multiple home screens with one app, thats what SPB Pocket Plus was.
I want Resco Audio Recorder which auto recorded all my incoming and outgoing calls, not because I want to spy but because if someone tells me large reference number on phone I dont have to tap and write at that moment, I could just say go ahead i am writing it down, and later I would just play back that call and note down what was that number.
I want the missing file explorer which is their present in android right now.
Metratrader 4 app for real time live trading execution in currency and stocks right from your phone, nothing like that exists in WP7, I know we have it for Iphone I dont know about android..
We say we have so many number of apps and things like that, but look at the top 10 PAID apps in each of the categories..
Business:
6 are language learning, 3 are business cards, 2 are time tracker and one to tie knots...
Tools and Productivity:
2 flashlights, 1 night clock, 1 air horn, 1, dog whistle, 1 that saves pic in pdf format and calls itself 'scanner' (very poor scanning my direct camera photo is better than their PDF it include handy scan app too), 2 remote desktop (10 USD each)..
Personal Finance:
7 budget software (all exactly same, just store your spending, nothing else, useless, nothing like SPB Finance), remaninf 4 are market watch apps which all just does the same thing which is stream rates of top 10 cos from yahoo or google.. , no decent wallet app like CODEwallet Pro where we could create nice cards from desktop and sync it to wallet on phone, no actual trading app.. nothing..
Sounds like Android is a better fit for you.

Yep. Agreed.
In this kind of needs and preferences better try Android. WP7 is not really meant for this type of usage. This is what I have found for myself and while WP7 started to be frustrating after few months, Android solved everything for me in every respect.
I also want to see Mango and keep my Optimus 7 however some things are still not in the pipeline, like file explorers, USB docs/email sync and some apps like Opera Mini... And I'm afraid there won't by alternatives for core apps of WP7 either.
I understand your points well. I would also suggest that
Android is the right choise.
Just another way to look at things i would like to mention is, maybe most of the things you miss is just ways you USED to work with your phone? What ever WP is, its a new way to interact with your phone. For a old WM user like me, it was very wierd in the start, and i felt naked. I got used to it thou and currently having a replacment Android phone, while my current device is in for service. And now i miss my WP. It's strange how you miss the cow's afterwards.
Im staying with WP.
Just some thoughts from another side.
um..
I was thinking the same thing about switching to android, but I wont abandon wp all together. I'll give it a good year to mature
We have omnia7 and galaxy s. Of course the galaxy s fits better to my hardcore needs because it has al lot more options and you have a lot of custom roms and so on. BUT sometimes I'm really jealous about Omnia 7 perfect materials. And android is never as perfect designed as wp7. Android and its tons of different launchers is looking like an evolution of symbian and iOS. WP7 is something fresh and easy. Its what a phone is ment to be: a very easy and fast (internet) communication device. Not an overfilled little laptop.
So it's your choice: easy to use and well designed Omnia7 or a powerful plastic (gaming-)device with childish looking interface.
By the way: mango is awesome!
The galaxy s II is one of the finest android phones available. If you're looking for a feature set more similar to the old windows mobile ( and it sounds like you are), then Android is truly your best option.
Microsoft doesn't want a "complicated" phone platform anymore. They want consumer-facing, easy to use, social media and entertainment oriented with the ability to handle corporate e-mail, calendar and document editing if you need it in a pinch.
I doubt we're going to see anything like file managers or similar anytime soon, if at all.
I owned a Galaxy s II before selling it to a friend who needed a new phone, and I would purchase the device again in a heartbeat if I decided I wanted to use android.

Yeah I'm pretty sure we won't. Hell, even desktop operating systems may be moving away from file managers.

Yeah maybe in 2050. You must be kidding. For any profi usage these are the basics.
I will give this phone a try till December, if nothing comes up in the APP scene better than what it is at present than I will switch to Android perm for good.. I am not the one who keeps two phones or keep migrating from one to another OS frequently.. I just choose the best and stay with it for a long time..
i desperately need a better calendar app for appointments.. this whole wide calendar tile is just a wasteful eye candy which i have come to realize.. auto call recording which i guess with the absence of file explorer will never come to wp7.. i want to make my phone a USB on the Go like thing, a pen drive... 16 GB of total storage is too small..
I dont know how microsoft thinks they make a 3 horse race with these features missing.. its basically a two horse race, racing in front and a 3rd horse limping behind to catch the bets by people made by error ...

You have very specific requirements that the average user doesn't care about. Recording phone calls without consent isn't even legal in many states.

Yep. Microsoft isn't gearing this phone toward the likes of the geeks and tech nerds that frequent this forum. The average user makes up the majority of users, thus the demographic Microsoft seeks to lure to WP7.
As far as what you need, you will find that some of these things will come to WP7 like various calendar apps due to the vast number of APIs made available by MS.
You may also find that some of these things may never come or may not come for quite some time. I, for one, hope to never see a file explorer on WP7.
The fact is, this isn't android and that's a good thing. Each has its own role to play and fits in where they fit in. If WP7 had been around back in 2008 as the alternative to ATT and the iphone, android would most likely be a niche device for the above geeks and tech nerds.
That being said, only Android will fully fill your present and perhaps future needs.
Good luck. Whichever direction ya go.

That's one of the things that I was thinking about as I read what he wanted to do. Unfortunately, Mango only allows for read-only access to the Contacts and Appointments. The only way to create an app like that (that actually integrates with the existing calendar app) would be to make the changes in the cloud and let the phone sync like normal. I guess you could always have a 100% standalone calendar app though.
I also want to say that the inability to expand memory using SDHC card will restrict many companies to bring their larger good graphics game to WP7... I have 16GB but I know their are people with only 8GB memory and they cannot expand it..
Now checkout this game:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CwSedSzckE&feature=relmfu
It looks a very heavy game by memory wise , if we want games like this on WP7 than 8GB device is a very small handset to have several of this kind of game.. I dont think gameloft can bring such games to WP7 with current restrictions on expandable memory..
****ty textures.. probably fits into the 400-500mb range.
The iphone version weighs in at 511MB..
You should probably get the SGS II and be done with it. You're not likely to find a better android device this year, and android will serve your purposes better than WP7.
It'll play 1080p h264 video in a mkv container without re-encoding.. and supports HDMI out using a MHL adapter.
Even with Mango's new APIs, you're not going to get the same level of functionality that you're looking for.
1. WP7 apps are not written using native code, they use silverlight, XNA or a combination of the two
2. There will never be a file manager or a task manager
3. There is no bluetooth file transfer
4. No Expandable storage
5. Small number of applications (this will be less of an issue as time goes by.. the marketplace is growing fairly rapidly)
6. Limited hardware options
7. No true multitasking (applications don't run constantly in the background until they are exited.. they do on android)
8. No Usb mass storage
I have both devices.
Maybe i can help you a bit.
I do have both devices (+ I have some more). It was part of the benefits of my last job and also part ( almost a requirement) of my actual one.
- If you switch to Android from Wp7 you feel like going back to WinMO a bit. Tons of Rom's,tons of walpapers but milligrams if you need help.
- The greatest benefit of WP7 is the unified platform. Maybe you don't realize it atm, but for 99% of people I've spoken to, it's a deal breaker.
- Not, I repeat, not my solely opinion: everything onscreen with Omnia7 looks better than on SGS2. People always want to tinker with the Omnia7 when I put both phones on the table (sometimes I carry the IPhone 4 with me also).
- SGS2 is literally bloated with redundant crapware. If you guys have ever bought a Sony Vaio in 2008-2010, this is worse.
- SGS2 takes mindblowing photos and FullHD videos (that they don't look like shot through a fishbowl).
-there are some neat tricks bundled on SGS2 but nothing you can't dl from market for free.
-battery is on par.
-voice commands are better on WP7.
-SGS2 feels like under development. 16bit graphics + wake up lag...for amoled+ and dual core? WTF?
- WP7 is more on the legal side, harder to sideload stolen/cracked apps. On android, on the other hand, you get hundreds of forums just for that.
If you have more questions I'd be happy to answer.
Just an interesting topic that I wanted to discuss (I'm sure there have been similar topics). Please, keep the fanboyism to a minimal.. lets try not to argue too much.
So, it's been about a month since Mango was officially released. After the long wait, was it all it was hyped up to be?
In my opinion, yes.. but mainly no. Now, to start things off I should say I have a Focus and this is my first and only smartphone (have had it since March), but I've used others. So on to the topic. Mango, in my opinion, was a great update and brought many needed features. I'm currently left with a phone that runs great, rarely crashes, has a smooth UI, and just plain does its job well. But having used it now for a month, I practically already forget that I'm running mango. It seems like the exact same phone I've had for the past 6 months. Sure, they added some very nice features, but in my opinion nothing huge that I find myself constantly using.
The multi-tasking I find almost completely useless as it's not real multi-task. As developers need to make use of this rather than the phone itself.. and since WP7 developers are generally not too concerned with us, multi-tasking for now is almost non-existent. The only use I've found for this so far is an alarm app which prior to mango I'd been quite frustrated that I couldn't set an alarm and then actually use my phone. Now I can.. but this is something I only use about once a week anyway.
Then there were many other nice features.. the new search features, some better marketplace integration, facebook integration, voice to text. this was all stuff that i was thrilled to mess around with at first and have some fun with. but now, its all stuff that rarely gets used, and while nice to have, didn't really change my phone. I still feel mango, while incredibly polished, is just too far behind it's competitors.
so yes, my answer is kind of confusing. I have a phone that does what it's supposed to do brilliantly, but I don't know.. it's just kind of boring. maybe it's the lack of a good app marketplace, maybe it's just the kid in me. As of now, I feel like next March when I'm due for a new contract, I'll probably go android or iPhone. Now, this is not because I dislike my phone, but because I don't think any of the 3 are worthy of a continuing contract renewal. It just seems to me like each of the three are pretty deficient in once aspect or another. I think it'll be fun to just hop around and try out a different OS each time I get a new phone rather than be a fanboy and miss out on what others have to offer. I definitely think MS has the best base with their UI, but I think it'll be a few years til they're feature and app rich enough to truly be the all around best.
So, what do you guys think? Is mango still blowing you away, or do you find it like me to be just a few nice feature upgrades?
Also even though it was slightly off topic, how many of you switch to different OS's all the time? Do you find yourself more content that way?
Comparing to wp7.0, Mango is a definitely a huge improvement for me. Comparing to other competitors, it's different enough to be a viable option. It's suppose to be boring and does what it does. I think iOS is equally boring, probably more so with less integration, but it does have more apps (which you have to pay). Android is another matter, but because it's not boring and works on all kinds of hardware, it's also not as polished.
Right now I have 3 instances of the same SMS conversation running in the BG. Yep that is just some very intelligent muti tasking. With the way MS has done multitasking its almost useless. Before you'll know it you'll have sms, settings menu, wifi menu running in the BG. I mean seriously is the OS not wise enough to figure that 3 instances of the same conversations should probably not run at the same time? Very idiotic IMO.
Mango is a huge step forward for me, mainly for the ie9 improvements + the office 365 and skydrive integration
IF they fix the multitasking it will be worth while. But as of right now multitasking is complete garbage on wp7.
No. My android sim is throttled and without my DSL hooked up that has pretty much cemented just how much I use the vibrant over the hd7. There is still too much **** I need the second device for, apps, core is functionality, etc. Stuff like transit navigation is a godsend for me on android, and awol on wp7. I had to navigate a new city with Bing maps. Never again will I put myself in that situation. Battery life is also better o the vibrant, which is becoming increasingly important to me these days, since I'm finding myself away from a power source more and more.
Las night after one hour off the charger my hd7 showed 61% and one hour remaining. All I did was browse the web. No music, videos, games or any of that stuff. This phone fives worse battery life than the worse "4g" android phones out there.
alSo I'm so damn tired of misclicking copy when trying to select a word. Its a huge hit to the time it takes me to compose messages. The keyboard is also buggy and randomly closes down on me while typing, which can lead to misclicks and lost text in apps and web pages.
I really need to sim swap, but I'm way too lazy to uncase these devices at the moment :-(

yea I noticed it was useless instantly and its a non feature for me. Its not something I use or think about. Too bad hp couldn't release one full touch 4" WebOS device.
Not only that, but it makes no sense either. Users should be able
• my keyboard just closed down twice •
To exit apps and long press search should be voice command. Long press home to multitask. Long press back to exit an application. Its like they did it differently (and oddly) just to be different.
And they destroyed the contextual search button, which is laughable ad it wad one of wp7'd selling points.

You're the troll, you constantly bash WP7 and continue to post about how you dislike it but refuse to ditch it. Wouldnt the sane thing to do be to just use the other OS's you have and prefer instead of constantly spreading negativity? And not sure about you, but I dont have any specific goals to accomplish regarding being a good or bad troll. Maybe I should buy an android device and go and constantly post in android forums how much I hate it, wait that would be trolling, wouldnt it?
What you did is flame baiting and trolling. Giving critiques that others disagree with is not trolling. Maybe that's hard for you to see. I thought it was obvious?
Only an idiot would spend $500+ on a device to bash it in a forum, but i guess that's your style. Im not going to validate you with any further responses. You aren't worth my time. I've already posted my on topic opinion in this thread.
Lol @ telling me to short sell my devices and stick to a certain one. Really, do you lack common sense or something, or are you just that desperate to see that people only get one side of the coin on this forum (which is stupid, and unfair). I'm still laughing at that part...

I dont think N8ter is a troll.
He just is not a fanboy, and like me, he uses three differente platforms, so he knows the good and bad of each one.
The bad, worse, the fatal flaw of WP7 for ME (I'm saying my OPINION), it the Multitask. Please, someone slap Belfiore in the face. I'm too far away, otherwise I would do it myself.
What kind of SMARTPHONE that limits the multitask for the last 5 instances lets the system take 3 of those instances to show the same app? "Oh, you could use the back button and close it". So I will have to control every app I open and close? That's not smart.
Worse than that, you have to reload the app each notification you have. Even if the app is in your memory. Oh, yeah! Everybody LOVES waiting. Especially with iOS and Android instant resuming EVERY app.
WP7 is not a system where you can chat with your friends if not by FB and MSN.
"So stop whining and buy an Android/iPhone." Yes, I could do that. But I sould my Nexus S and my iPhone 4 when I had the three, to stay with WP7. I love it. Like to use more than iPhone and even more than Android.
But it could be better, and that's why I'm whining. That non sense multitask makes me mad. And I'm really hoping MS fix that, because it's the best OS out there.
Yeah, I'm thinking Mango was more important for MS and potential customers than user current users. It definitely created a huge buzz for Windows phones and the more polished features make it more attractive for potential customers. But I really don't think it was worth all the obsessive update checking that I (and thousands of others) were doing for weeks leading up to the release.
And it's good to see that there are some non-fanboys here who can give honest criticisms but still use the device as well as others.
just out of curiousity, those of you who use multiple devices.. is it for separate personal/business or just separate plans so you can take advantage of the different OS's?
For me the best thing about Mango is that it finally fixed 3rd party notifications so now my tiles are live and are not just giant icons.
I don't use fb chat/msn because my battery can't take it for too long, twitter integration isn't as good as using a dedicated app, I rarely multitask because many developers haven't updated their apps yet and I'm used to hitting back to get out an app.
So in a nutshell I would answer no as the notification issue should/could have been fixed in a small update. Most importantly, Mango should really be about all these apps that where not possible before and here is the amazing list of worthy apps I downloaded thanks to Mango:
- WhatsApp

It's just free in the first year. Afterwards it's €1.99 per year. Which is almost nothing, at least in comparison to SMS.

This is the one thing about mango that annoys me the most. I hate when i go into multitasking to go back into kik messenger only to find it has been knocked out by 4 pages of text messages lol.
Most people here have unlimited SMS and mms. Board express ate my longer post. I'm pissed.
Always, the thing that makes WhatsApp good is free chat and file transfer over data connections like WiFi. Its a boon for people who travel internationally.
I actually like Samsung ChatOn better than WhatsApp. I don't use WhatsApp because they charge iOS .99 and that's it, but want other platforms to pay a subscription. It just isn't fair
